Alaska Libertarian candidate meets with Murkowski at “undisclosed location”; Update: I’m “still in this game,” says Murkowski; Update: Murkowski showcasing her “libertarian” side
posted at 5:35 pm on September 7, 2010 by Allahpundit
The Libertarian Party chairman says their minds are made up and they’re dead set against putting her on the ballot.
But if that’s true, what’s there to talk about?
Alaska Libertarian Party Chairman Scott Kohlhaas said Monday that Murkowski’s campaign reached out to his party after she conceded last week — despite the fact that the party’s executive committee had already announced it would not replace its candidate, David Haase, with Murkowski.
“Yes, we’re in discussions with the Murkowski campaign. We’ve always said we’d be open to a sit-down with any Alaskan, especially a sitting U.S. senator,” Kohlhaas said. “Even though the talks are a good thing, we’re not going to flip-flop. We warned them, but they still want to talk.”…
Not only would Haase have to remove himself from the ballot, but the state executive committee would have to approve Murkowski’s candidacy by Sept. 15. The Alaska Libertarian Party, however, already voted on Aug. 30 not to allow Murkowski on the ballot because of ideological differences — a vote that Kohlhaas said will not be reversed.
Haase has already hinted that he’s willing to step aside, and — funnily enough — he and Murkowski met within the last few hours. Maybe her thinking here is to force the committee to change its mind by having Haase drop out first? In that case, they’d have to choose between picking a replacement or running with no one on the ticket. And if they’re going to pick a replacement, why not pick someone who … actually stands a chance of winning?
Unsurprisingly, Team Murkowski is rarin’ to go:
Amid new reports that Murkowski has reached out to the Alaska Libertarian Party over a possible deal that could keep her on the ballot after her primary defeat to Joe Miller, Murkowski’s campaign manager John Bitney told RealClearPolitics on Tuesday, “If she wants to stay in the race, I’ll support her 100 percent.”
Reached by phone from Murkowski’s campaign office, which has remained up and running as staffers complete administrative tasks, Bitney sounded like someone who was itching to jump back into the fight.
“It is a campaign office that is just ready to launch at a moment’s notice,” he said…
Bitney indicated that he had been considering general election campaign strategies for Murkowski.
Ace thinks it’s no big deal if she runs since now Miller is famous and has grassroots buzz, but she can chip away with attack ads (which, famously, she mostly avoided during the primary) and by promising that she’ll keep the federal dough rolling into the state while Miller won’t. I think it’ll be a nightmare, although if you’re looking for silver linings, I’ll give you three: (1) The anti-Murkowski attack ads funded by the NRSC should be fun fun fun; (2) the DNC et al. will be even more tempted now to dump money into Alaska to boost McAdams, thus drawing cash away from other vulnerable Dems; and (3) the prospect of her rival stealing an eleventh-hour victory might force Sarahcuda onto the trail in Alaska, turning this into a true Palin/Murkowski war. It’ll be messy, but riveting.
Update: It’s not that she wants to run, mind you. It’s the people want her to.
A week after conceding the GOP primary, U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski says she’s not a quitter and is “still in this game.”
Murkowski told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she’s been inundated with calls and e-mails from supporters, asking her not to leave the race. She says she’s been humbled and is listening – and weighing her options.
She said that if this was “all about Lisa, certainly the easy thing for me to do would be to figure out what my next opportunity would be with my family and just settle in to a nice job.”
She also claims it was “friends” of hers, not her campaign, who approached the Libertarian Party — unbidden.
Update: You’ll find another job somewhere, Murky, I promise. Or … actually, maybe it’s not safe to promise that with Captain Stimulus in the White House for another two years.
Murkowski and Haase discussed the matter – and it appears the senator made some efforts to discuss some of her more Libertarian-leaning positions during the meeting.
Haase recalled that Murkowski told him that she has “reservations” about the Federal Reserve – a pet issue for the Libertarian nominee – and reminded him that she supported an amendment this year that would have called for an audit of the country’s central banking system.

Seems like the article is far less damning than the headline…If I were a politician facing unemployment from the family business in 4 months, I’d be busy networking just like she is, even if I had absolutely no aspirations to betray my party (which I hope is also true of her.)
Even well-heeled aristocrats have financial obligations in the face of this upcoming economic mess.

For what it’s worth, Miller told the cops at the scene he was stopped in the right hand lane, with his signal on indicating a left hand turn when he was rear ended.
As a consequence, he is quoted as saying he was not at fault and thus he intends to fight the ticket. BTW if his taillight is broken, re-constructionists ARE able to determine if that light had been ‘on’ prior to the accident.

To engage in supporting someone great, or defeating someone noxious.
I have no Senator up this time around in Tennessee, but there are races in neighboring states that will matter a lot.
Arkansas
Missouri
Kentucky
North Carolina
Those are just the states touching my state.
During the ’08 Presidential election, the TNGOP was gathering volunteers and busing them into Missouri because it was always solid McCain/Palin here, but Missouri was really close.
Happens all the time.

I think I understand the feeling. If the United States were more federal and less unitary, the 50 states would be more free to be different from each other in politics, law, and culture, and “foreigners” from out of state interfering in another state’s political affairs would be rightly considered obnoxious. That, I think, is why it feels wrong.
With the Federal government expanding its tentacles everywhere via the overapplication of the Commerce Clause, unelected and extra-Constitutional regulatory agencies, and so on, states’ affairs are much more intertwined than the Founders ever intended. As a result, what brian1972 and ladyingray said is true and valid.
We must ruthlessly chop the Federal government down to size, so that we can afford to leave each other’s state governments alone as we ourselves would like to be left alone to pursue our own business.

yeah but it started with ny-23 when Dede backed the dem instead of the conservative. the loss by hoffman gave the liberal RINO’s hope that by going 3rd party or even withholding support they could eitehr win the election or have the liberal win.
Ny-23 showed that RINO’s would rather have liberals in office then conservatives and its just gone downhill from there. crist, Haley’s opponent, Lisa, Bennett, many others now Castle all attacking the conservative instead of the liberal.
I think 2010 showed to most americans where the RINO’s stand.

You are right, and the only thing that makes it even halfway okay is the emergency the country is in. If the states were in a proper small-f federalist relationship with just enough capital-F Federal government to stick them together, instead of this hideous swamp of Federal goo we’re all drowning in, then the proper response to an election carpetbagger from out of state would be a polite, “thanks, but no thanks!” :-) I hope we can get there soon.

I’m with the others here regarding US Senate\House races being more than just who represents your personal state. Until the federal government is reduced to its Constitutional responsibilites (without Commerce Clause on steroids), the fed elections have too far reaching of impacts to just cross our fingers.
I’ll watch and even have favorites for various governor positions, but I wouldn’t consider donating to any outside my own state since it would have almost no impact on me. The same goes for various state senate\house races.

You assume that everyone wants to avoid the disaster.
There are many who view the United States as a particularly offensive entity in the world (leftists). They want to see the US diminished or even destroyed (extreme leftists). They call themselves Americans but truly dislike their own nation and their fellow countrymen. Others, less radical would like to see a disaster to bring home those chickens to roost as it were, or to take advantage of the crisis for their own benefit.
Others would rather pretend that the disaster isn’t coming, even if they sorta know it is. This allows them to avoid making any decisions or taking a stand on issues they have avoided for decades.
Still others do see the crisis and would act, but they draw the line at bashing the steersman over the head as that would be assault, and it really is his rightful position to steer the boat even if it is towards that rather large iceberg.

You silly grassroots hayseeds don’t think you can replace their elitists with blue collar guys who won’t vote to keep the Ayatollahs in power do you?
The Ayatollahs have a plan – and that plan included Specter and Crist … well that didn’t work out did it. But never fear – there are more elitist Jedi’s out there – like Murkowski and Castle.
It’s time to start thinking here – we may not be able to take back majorities of both houses AND reform our party. So people need to start thinking about what’s more important.

drfredc on September 7, 2010 at 10:25 PM
I totally get what you’re writing here. If I could I would, esp. Ohio. Here are things I don’t like:
1-Right off the bat, I had to disclose my political preference when I got my driver’s license. Huge shocker for me as soon as I moved up north. Nobody’s business! This is not asked in PR. Organ donor, yep. Party affiliation=none of your business. I already barf at Kathy Dahlkemper, where I tweeted Gov. Palin more than once to support her counterpart. See here.
2-Switch parties in order to cast a vote to take the other candidate down. Perhaps I am waaayy too honest, but precisely because VOTE IS SECRET where I come from, I never had to bother with this step. Childly speaking, that’s cheating but to each their own. Strategies count.
3-If I could vote in OH to take down any Dem., I’d have my grandma who lives there, 88, transported to the polls (where she’s a hardcore Republican) and cast mine there too. BUT never change that pesky “party affiliation”. If we have relatives out of state, let’s move them to vote.
4-In an ideal world and something I cannot get a grasp of, no matter how much Mr. PPF explains it to me, every vote counts, regardless of the size of the state. I’d toss that out the window. In PR that does not matter, even though there are smaller municipalities than others.
5-Reconfigure/rearrange representation of Senate and House according to issue #4, and so no seats are taken away from proper representation.
6-My biggie: Any US Territory gets affected in an indirect way b/c of what Obama does. I have not come across a poll on POTUS on US Territories but I like to see what people think of him outside states. Why Dems get primaries in US Territories but the GOP doesn’t? Wouldn’t be this a chance to get to know the candidates for POTUS and VPOTUS and to see what happens, and how they can help?
7-Another biggie: IS THERE ANY WAY STATES CAN BE MONITORED ON TARP, PORKULUS AND OTHER FED FUNDS? Ever since I found out complaints that if a Governor is withholding these, to an extent or not, deserves to be audited to the core and any unused funds returned to be reimbursed; and of course, Obama shall not put these states on the spot through lamestream media./dream on, PPF! Constitutional ammendments required here

Well, Murkowski has shown her true lack of colors. She might not be a quitter on her own twisted worldview, but she is indeed compromising her own by crossing party lines.
That’s called power thirst and deception. Will voters want to pick her after a party switch? Independents, regardless, might see this as for what it is. Alaskans, to me, seem like straight-shooters, thinkers that want Alaska to succeed, to have those pipelines and oil sources tapped.
Is Murkowski up to that task? She’s just fed up at Palin and I am ok with it.

I am not overstating it. They are supposed to stand for principle. If Murkowski swipes their banner, it just proves that this so-called party of principle are willing to piss it cheaply away for a tiny payoff, or some worthless promise or two.
Other parties can, and should, easily take the Libertarians’ place and disdain these suddenly worthless clowns if this Murkowski thing happens.
The Libertarian Party must receive merciless ridicule and repudiation if they pull this stunt.

If the LP won’t take her, her only recourse is as a write-in, which means she won’t beat the Margin of Error when it’s all counted. The AIP, which Wally Hickel used to get back on the ballot after losing the GOP primary some 20 years ago, didn’t qualify for the ballot this year.

Even if it did, Murky ain’t no Wally Hickel . . .

Who knew that Republican Progressive Machine Politician = Libertarian?
Or are these some of the dreaded ‘Liberaltarians’ that we hear about?
ajacksonian on September 8, 2010 at 6:30 AM
It’s beginning to appear that Murkowski is actually a member of the Opportunist Party rather a Republican.

That self serving dolt needs to give it up and get behind her party.

If seems the Libertarians don’t have much in the way of ethics and are willing to become her pimp. Question, will they buy her a red bulb for the outside of her campaign hq.

Daddy’s girl was appointed and ,in turn, has no intentions of representing anyone but her own best interests. If she won’t represent the best iinterests of Republicans for which party she is serving, why would the libertarians be interested in her representing them unless they are as shallow as she is?

How sad do you have to be to twist yourself into a pretzel in order to stay in D.C.. What’s the matter, Senator, Alaska not your ideal place to live anymore?

Won’t someone please photoshop in some lightning bolts shooting out of her fingertips?

Ah, yes, that would be her “pork butt”, would it not?
Regarding her death march-like attempts to stay in the game – has Lisa not served a sufficient length of time in the Senate in order to qualify for her lifetime pension and doubleplusgood health care insurance?
ya2daup on September 8, 2010 at 10:08 AM
So, Lisa, next year when Palin announces she’s running for POTUS because PEOPLE want her to, you would throw your support wholeheartedly for her, too?
