Prayers for the Rubio family

posted at 12:49 am on September 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

This came through a little while ago from the Rubio campaign, via Val Prieto:

Surrounded by family and loved ones, Marco Rubio’s father, Mario Rubio, passed away tonight at Baptist Hospital in Miami.  He was 83 years old.  Mario Rubio suffered from a long bout with emphysema and lung cancer.

In his final moments, Mario was accompanied by his loving wife of 61 years, Oria, his children Mario, Barbara, Marco and Veronica, and his extended family.

On the passing of his father, Marco Rubio issued the following statement:

“My father knew hard work and struggle from very early in his life. His mother died when he was only 9 years old. The day after his mother was buried he went to work with his father and did not stop working until he was 78 years old.

“He was by far the most unselfish person I have ever known, always focused on others, and never on his own well being. He was especially determined to provide his children opportunities he himself never had.

“My dad worked as a street vendor, security guard, apartment building manager and crossing guard.  But for most of his life he was a bartender, and by all accounts a great one. But his greatest success came from the two most important jobs he ever had: husband and father.

“He was very proud of my public service. And over the last 18 months he became an expert channel surfer, constantly searching for my next television interview.

“I was blessed to be raised by a world class father. And I thank God for allowing my father to live long and healthy enough to see that the sacrifices he made for us were not in vain.”

For the entire Rubio family, as well as our campaign, politics will now be placed on temporary hold. We will resume our full schedule some time in the coming days. During this time, we respectfully ask for privacy for Marco and his family so they may mourn their loss in peace.

In lieu of flowers, the Rubio family requests honoring Mario Rubio’s memory by supporting the League Against Cancer/Liga Contra El Cancer http://ligacontraelcancer.org/.

Our prayers are with Marco and his family. Please send them your condolences as well.

On a related note, please commend Kendrick Meek for a very classy moment earlier today, which you can see at The Shark Tank.  Not all politics are bloodsport.

God of power and mercy, you have made death itself the gateway to eternal life. Look with love on our dying brother, and make him one with Your Son in His suffering and death, that, sealed with the blood of Christ, he may come before you free from sin. Amen.

Classy move by Meek’s. Crist not so much:

Former Republican Governor Charlie Crist, now an Independent, was also in attendance and I asked him what he thought of the elder Rubio’s illness, to which he responded, ” Yeah, I heard about that.”

Regards to the Rubio family at this difficult time. He seem’s to have raised some good kids, of that I’m sure he was proud.

The most compelling things I’ve heard from Marco Rubio are when he talks about his father, particularly the man’s work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. It stirs something within me when he talks about his father’s adherence to the American dream and the hard work, determination, persistence, and strength of character it took to make that dream come true.

It always reminds me of my own father, whose work ethic and commitment to his family has been one of the most important examples in shaping my own ideals and values.

Losing a father is surely hard. Losing someone who has contributed so much to your own identity as a man, and as an American, is surely heartbreaking.

Caiwyn on September 5, 2010 at 1:01 AM

Mr. Rubio will carry on his father’s name with pride. God bless and prayers for the family.

carbon_footprint on September 5, 2010 at 1:03 AM

This makes me think of the most touching things we used to hear Tim Russert say about his own dad. Nothing can take the place of a great father.

RIP, Mr. Rubio, and may God give the family peace and comfort.

Rosmerta on September 5, 2010 at 1:05 AM

From the article about Meek (who indeed made a very classy statement):

“Former Republican Governor Charlie Crist, now an Independent, was also in attendance and I asked him what he thought of the elder Rubio’s illness, to which he responded, ” Yeah, I heard about that.”

Wow. You can just feel the compassion oozing from Crist, huh? Staying classy, orange man.

Losing a father is a terrible, heart-rending thing, even a father who was aged and in poor health.

Good Solid B-Plus on September 5, 2010 at 1:10 AM

Meek demonstrates why the only real choice is between him and Rubio. Crist is a classless, spineless jerk.

Condolences to the Rubio family.

By the way, Mario Rubio was a Cuban refugee who escaped the Castro regime. He worked to make sure his family had a better future than he did.

His son is the Republican nominee for the upper chamber in the United States Congress. His children, grandchildren, and entire family will never know a day under an oppressive regime.

I’d say he was successful.

It will be a very short countdown waiting for some Kos or Huffpo A-hole to say this was his punishment for having Marco as a son. Such extremists haven’t exactly been discreet in claiming that cancer is a just punishment for those they don’t like.

JimRich on September 5, 2010 at 1:44 AM

God bless the Rubio family. May they find peace and comfort in the memories of their father and husband. And may the example he set with his life give the Rubio family the strength they need to make it through their grief and the hard work Marco Rubio and his supporters have ahead of them.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Rubio family. And in this day and age of cutthroat politics, a simple display of human kindness and compassion from Meek is as rare as it is refreshing.

DrAllecon on September 5, 2010 at 2:10 AM

I like to think that Marco’s father will be able to rest in peace knowing that his son has chartered a course to keep America from encroaching on becoming his former homeland. God Speed Mr. Rubio. You raised a son who could well be part of the cog that will change the course of this country.

sybilll on September 5, 2010 at 2:11 AM

Rough to lose a father, especially one like the that described above. Good that Marco and family could be with him at the end.

I will quote Kendrick Meek, although I support Rubio.

I want all you to hold his family up in prayer through this very difficult time

There is no other way to put it.

SgtSVJones on September 5, 2010 at 2:55 AM

“We have sweated beneath the same sun, looked up in wonder at the same moon, and wept when it was all done…for being done too soon.”

Prayers for Mr. Rubio and his loved ones. What a blessing that the family has joyous memories to relive.

[the quote is part of an old Neil diamond song]

On a related note, please commend Kendrick Meek for a very classy moment earlier today…

Credit where it’s due…Meek has far more class than Gov. Crist.

And yes…prayers today for the Rubio family. I can sympathize, having lost my mother 4 years ago to lung cancer, and she was 61. And her brother, my uncle, died one year later of the same lung cancer. It’s a hard thing for all to get through, made even worse if you’re in the midst of a campaign with national attention.

Meek and Rubio, class and dignity. Crist, well…I’ll pray for you too.

My deepest condolences and prayers for the Rubio family.

One of the reasons that I admire Marco Rubio is his committment to family values and honest striving/achievement. He respects the heritage that he learned from his parents, and he want to promote those same opportunities to his own children/grandchildren, which he sees as the promise of the American Dream to all of our young.

onlineanalyst on September 5, 2010 at 9:05 AM

Not a fan of Meek at all, especially how he went about being elected for his first term. That being said, he did show incredible class, and I don’t think he had any other motive than to actually do the right and respectable thing and the Rubio family and campaign appreciate it I’m sure. I know that I do.
As for Charlie Crist’s comment? Ass. Clown.

Rubio and his family have my prayers. Losing a father is always difficult. Mine died in an accident, and one thing that I took some comfort in was that I didn’t see him suffer from terminal illness, or even see him shrivel in strength as he aged.

My deepest condolences to the Rubio family, for the loss of their father. I hate cancer; cancer took away my dear mom, and I wish there’s a cure for this disease. I know what Marco went through because of what I went through; but he always looked very good, in good spirits, and he always expressed himself very well all throughout the media, without letting anybody know about all the pain and suffering he carried inside him.

May he rest in peace!

I second that! My mom didn’t see me graduate from college, or get married, nor my kids. If losing a father (literally or figuratively like mine) sucks, losing a mother is a hole in the gut. Not a day goes by where I wish she was alive, or talk to her, nor pass me along some of her recipes.

May the Rubio family be given comfort and strength during this difficult time, and feel the power of all the prayer coming their way. I lost my beautiful mother to bone cancer after two agonizing years of suffering when I was 50. Lost my dad two years earlier. Even at that age, I still felt like an orphan.

silvernana on September 5, 2010 at 11:12 AM

I’m impressed with Kendrick Meek, Charlie Crist, on the other hand, just showed us why he will not win this November. In fact, I’ll be willing to go out on a limb and say he won’t even be a spoiler. If you’re a Democrat, the closer you look at Crist, the better Meek looks.

RIP Mario.

bflat879 on September 5, 2010 at 11:23 AM

God bless and comfort the Rubio family as they grieve the loss of Mario. He lived a long, fruitful, productive life, although as others have said, it is difficult to lose someone you love deeply at any time. My own father died due to multiple sclorosis when he was only 59 years old. My mother entered into the “long goodbye” of Alzheimer’s at 65, and she’s going into her 80th year now.
