WaPo: Hey, that Oval Office rug quote got botched
posted at 2:20 pm on September 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Today, the Washington Post notices that the White House doesn’t bother to do much research. Of course, had Jamie Stiehm been an avid reader of our Obamateurisms of the Day feature at Hot Air, the Post may have noticed this over a year ago:
A mistake has been made in the Oval Office makeover that goes beyond the beige.
President Obama’s new presidential rug seemed beyond reproach, with quotations from Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. woven along its curved edge.
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” According media reports, this quote keeping Obama company on his wheat-colored carpet is from King.
Except it’s not a King quote. The words belong to a long-gone Bostonian champion of social progress. His roots in the republic ran so deep that his grandfather commanded the Minutemen at the Battle of Lexington.
For the record, Theodore Parker is your man, President Obama. Unless you’re fascinated by antebellum American reformers, you may not know of the lyrically gifted Parker, an abolitionist, Unitarian minister and Transcendentalist thinker who foresaw the end of slavery, though he did not live to see emancipation. He died at age 49 in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War.
For the record, King never claimed the phrase as his own. He quoted Parker, one of his inspirations, in using this phrase, a point never noticed by Barack Obama during his campaign. He repeated the phrase often enough that it caught the attention of Reverend Matt Tittle, who attempted to inform the campaign in April 2008 that Obama was misattributing the quote. The campaign never replied to Tittle, but for a while Obama dropped the reference, and Tittle thought the message had been received.
When did this come out? Well, Tittle blogged about it in December 2008 at the Houston Chronicle. In July 2009, I wrote about it as an Obamateurism of the Day — and that was more than a year before the White House decided to commit their poor research into the press release for the Oval Office rug. When that happened, it became one of this week’s OOTDs, and will be one of the selections in tomorrow’s OOTW poll.
It’s nice of the Post to notice this, even if it ran on a Saturday, but perhaps they might credit Tittle, who first reported it.

Oval Off rug quote mistake–this WH is so busy trying to rewrite history, even the rug lies.
debg on September 4, 2010 at 2:27 PM
They got it right. In leftist fashion.
The quote (and it’s true meaning) is secondary. Co-opting the legacies of monumental historical figures while making it seem you stand for the same thing is the primary function behind all of this.
It’s all showmanship for the sake of trying to win people over.

You’d think they might have noticed that after the fabulous Cairo speech, when Barry claimed the U.S. as one of the world’s largest Muslim nations, and credited Muslims throughout history with a bunch of inventions that were actually the work of other (non-Muslim) people.
But hey, who needs actual facts, right WaPo? It’s the narrative that matters (and having somebody dreamy saying it, of course).

Gonna be funny when Obama finally figures out it was some old white preachers quote he has been using.

From:
Subject: Update 8-20-2010

Hey everybody I just wanted to send a quick update and give Yall the REAL story on what’s going on over here with the troop withdrawal. The picture is of my crew and I on a break during a mission. The guy to the far left is my gunner (Burks) and the guy in the middle is my driver (Mizell). They go with me on every mission and are great guys. The reason I’m sending this out is because I have had a few people ask if I left Iraq early because all of the combat troops are out of Iraq and I wanted to let everyone know the real deal. It’s kind of ridiculous how the news is saying that the last of the “combat” troops are out of Iraq because of Pres Osama ( I mean Obama ). He says that it was his campaign promise. Take our Brigade for example. We were originally called a HBCT ( Heavy Brigade Combat Team). Well since Obama said he would pull all of the “combat” troops out by Aug all they did before we left was change our name from a HBCT to a AAB ( Advise and Assist Brigade ). We have the same personnel/equipment layout as before and are doing the same missions. The ONLY difference is that they changed our name from a HBCT to an AAB and that’s how he is getting away with saying that he has pulled all of the “combat” troops out. It is really ridiculous what he’s doing and he has ticked alot of people off. And it’s funny how the media is buying all of it to. So no the last combat troops are not out of Iraq we are still here. There are other Brigades just like ours that are doing the same missions that are still over here. Sorry for going on about it but we are just sitting over here watching it and are like “You’ve got to be kidding me!” So anyway now you know the REAL story so that’s why I’m not coming back early. You have to watch those liberal, their sneaky! Anyways I hope everyone is doing well and I’ll see you soon!

Even if it were an MLK quote, why would it need to be in the Oval Office alongside quotes by previous presidents? MLK was a religious figure– where is the left and their incessant screaming about separation of church and state in these instances?
Mother Theresa on a stamp or roadside crosses for slain police are VERBOTEN, but religious figures getting an official national holiday and having their quotes (or quotes inaccurately attributed to them)in the WH is okay? Liberalogic at its best.

I actually like the wallpaper choice, fwiw.
The rest is unnecessary and so BLAH looking (that coffee table!! NoooOoOOO!). And the rug overall is bleh and the quotes idea is silly and tacky to begin with. Even so, including MLK on it at all is ridiculous, since it’s the Oval Office. If they were to go with so much tacky, it should have at least stuck with quotes exclusively from former Presidents.
One thing: I am surprised Obama kept the Resolute Desk and didn’t ship it back to the Brits back when he shipped back the bust of Churchill.
