Quotes of the day
posted at 10:30 pm on September 3, 2010 by Allahpundit
Obama, in this fanciful version, held up his hand. He told his aides to put away the history books and reject the New Deal comparisons. Unlike in 1932, Americans today have a raging distrust of Washington, he observed. Living through a crisis caused by excessive debt, they will viscerally recoil at the prospect of federal debt without end. “Somehow,” Obama concluded, “we have to address the crisis without further terrifying the American people.”…
Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic committee chairmen were upset. For decades they’d been storing up spending proposals. This was their chance to pass them all. The president told the House speaker that she would get many of her priorities, but not in a 100-day rush. Privately, Democratic aides developed a political strategy they called Save Nancy From Herself…
Obama put signs around the White House: “No Quick Fixes.” Administration officials were forbidden from promising a short-term summer of recovery. They talked incessantly about long-term productivity. Democrats were going to define themselves as the economic Back to Basics Party. They wouldn’t let Republicans define them as somehow “alien” or “socialist.”
***
For 24 months, an emotionally intense opposition to the president has been unsupported by anything like a Republican policy agenda. The party is agreed on holding a vote on the repeal of Obamacare. Beyond that — it’s all a big void.
Politics abhors a vacuum however, and into that void all kinds of mischief can seep. We may be subject to endless investigations of petty scandals rather than measures to restart the stalled recovery. In advance of the election, Republicans might be able to agree on a payroll tax holiday, a redoubled infrastructure program, and federal encouragement of nuclear power generation. But afterwards, defining policy will get much tougher. The iron triangle will assert itself; rather than a finite set of promises to redeem, GOP lawmakers will confront an open-ended set of deals to be made.
In 1994, Republicans arrived in the majority with plans developed over more than a decade of serious work: welfare reform, Medicare reform, budget balancing, education choice. Where is today’s equivalent? Republicans have done insufficient serious policy work over the past half dozen years. The legacy of this inactivity is a party on the brink of power, lacking an intellectual framework for the use of that power.

The Republicans need to do a fews things
1. ObamaCare needs to be voucherized.
2. Payroll tax holiday
3. Make sure the estate tax stays dead
4. Try to protect the bush tax cuts for those making up to a $1 million(not just $200k)…
5. Be willing to comprise on taxes above that in order to pay for health care vouchers and payroll tax holiday. Maybe tie the tax rate for those making over $1 million and the payroll taxes to the unemployment rate.
The election of 2012 will still be about ObamaCare… the GOP must put out an alternative for OCare that would be possible to overthrow it. It must be ambitious and it can’t be half-arsed… which will probably require compromising on taxes.

Actually, until I clicked on the link and saw it was Frum saying this stuff, I thought it made good sense.
I know… he’s a pariah. Whatever. Republicans need to do more than just win elections and then continue as they have in the past decade, they need to win elections and actually act as they claim they will during the campaigns.
This isn’t football, people. We aren’t rooting for Republicans just so we can say “we won”. These victories should accomplish something.
That said, we should be pleased with the number of strong conservatives winning primaries around the country. Now let’s take those victories and turn them into goals.

Frum has a point. So far Republicans have been riding the wave of anti-Obama, anti-Democrat, anti-incumbent fever promising little more than not being those guys.
I’d like to see Paul Ryan’s ideas given serious consideration, or something. They might be waiting to reveal whatever after the election, but it better be something, and it better be limited government oriented.

Hey guys your views, policies and ideas were rejected by the voters in 2006 and rejected again in 2008 louder when you all didn’t get the message. the socialists views will be rejected in 2010 and 2012 for those stupid enough not to get the message in 2010.

I’ve been a professional policy wonk for almost 30 years. But right now I don’t see any “Republican policy” that is going to get America out of the ditch. The economy will not recover until government STOPS doing so much “policy.” All Republicans need to do is repeal the “policy” that spooked investors and makes hiring people too risky. And actually pass a budget that does not produce mor insane levels of debt. I think pretty much every Republican is already campaigning on this “policy agenda.”
rockmom on September 3, 2010 at 11:45 PM
This is weird, but I think I agree with Frum. The GOP does need a list of goals, and I think it will come.
As for investigations, I think I’m mostly against them. I thought the Dems were d-bags for suggesting they would investigate the Bush administration for ‘crimes’ and possibly land people in jail.
A slew of investigations is going to bring us back to the 90s, and Obama will play off of it to try to gain public sympathy like Clinton. Stick to the issues and get America moving again.

Hmmmm here’s an interesting tidbit I just saw on ABC nightly news. They said Obama is claiming Republican obstruction is to blame for his jobs bill not getting any support. Then the announcer asked if this were really true or if it were a lack of leadership in the WH. They instructed viewers to go online and answer the poll and leave comments.

Excuse me?
The Republicans aren’t doing anything?
May I remind Mr. Frum that the GOP has a few 2000+ page bills, full of ‘fill in the blank’ clauses and ‘to be announced’ declarations to pour over.
It’s like trying to patch the holes in a ship’s hull before the bilge pumps have the water down to ‘neck high’ level.
Are the Republicans writing up a ‘counter-plan’ to this mess?
Yeah, I suspect they are. And given the magnitude of the mess we’re staring at, I’m inclined to think that it’s taking a bit of time fine-tune it for November.
Are they going to air it early enough for the MSM and the ‘rats to start fabbing a coherent set of talking points to demonize it to death?
I dammn well wouldn’t.
I see endless whining about no counter-punching by the GOP.
Get a clue.
Right now, wave after wave of bad news washes over Obozo and ‘rats. The voters (the ones who are actually paying attention) are getting increasingly restive over the debt, the economy, and the ‘direction’ (and size) of government.
The general campaign message for November is falling out of the sky, non-stop. The ‘rats are fleeing their Glorious Leader as fast as they dive into their limo’s and get the f*ck outta Dodge. That particular script is writing itself.
The chief reason the ‘rats are flailing about helplessly is that they have no solid target to counter-punch except the brutal reality of their own failed policies. Every major swing at the GOP’s jaw winds up (most of the time) connecting with emptiness.
Only a fool leads with their chin.
As I’ve said before: when an idiot, soaked in gasoline, holding a couple of lit road flares, wants to do the ‘chicken dance’.
You give them a wide berth and let’em have at it.
The time to close the distance and add to the pummeling is coming.
But not just yet.
Timing is everything.
P.S. Frum is a lackey for the Beltway critters and a spineless idiot. He’s history.

Terrye on September 4, 2010 at 5:59 AM
I partially agree with frum here. I don’t think that it’s an “intellectual framework” that is in order, because we have intellectualism in spades that is rampant around Washington and that is the problem–the thing we need is true leadership, and integrity. YOu can have all the intellectuals you want, but unless you have some good leadership, then seizing the mantle of leadership is the easy part and wielding it is entirely another. Exhibit A: POTUS.
ted c on September 4, 2010 at 6:17 AM
No, we don’t have any new ideas. We don’t NEED any new ideas. We’ve got the really excellent old ones. Start with low taxes and limited government and work out from there.

Grace_is_sufficient on September 4, 2010 at 6:56 AM
I have a suggestion for a framework that Republicans can use once they get back in power. It was developed after much thought and experience, by people far more knowledgeable and intelligent than any of the leaders in our current government (including the intellectual fraud Barry Obama).
It’s called the U.S. Constitution.
Let’s try that framework for a change, shall we?

Hasn’t Frum spent most of the past two years complaining of conservative intolerance rather than promoting policy ideas of his own? Perhaps the Republicans, afraid to spook independents with root-and-branch responses to leftist Jacobinism, have simply taken his advice.

Sorry AP Frum doesn’t have any of the answers. Frum sees a wave coming and wants to get on board so he suggests that the Republicans need policy wonks and guess what? He’s available. The Tea Party sentiment (Small Government, Constitutional limits) is what is driving the resurgence and to go back to fricking Republicanism is a death sentence. That stagnation he talks about over the last 6 years was caused by people like Frum who didn’t want to rock the boat so they basically accomplished nothing that held onto voters. As much as I might like Karl Rove we can’t just triangulate Latinos or the Elderly or some other group out of fear we “are going to be a permanant minority! AWWW!” and have the kind of success that people look at say “They deserve to be running things”. Border Security, SS reform, things not touched in the past due to triangulation on top of repealing Democrat pork and big Government is what will give people faith in the right.

Exactly my humble worry. All this talk about changing the game if the GOP gets in? They might be wise to plan some small, preliminary but effective steps–see how these work and increment others in a VERY careful, well thought out fashion. This country has not been’governed’for a long, long time, it’s just been manipulated to meet this or that political goal or please this or that narrow faction. Do not know if anything like wise governance can be achieved if the GOP takes over and O remains in the WH, but do think that all of the above should be patently aware that this is now the goal. Anything less will result in the kinds of upheaval we have seen in the past and present Presidencies. The American people are watching very carefully these days…finally.
jeanie on September 4, 2010 at 10:52 AM
Actually, this time, the Republicans have it so much easier. The last time, they’d been out of power for 40 years and no one knew what they could do. This time, we’ve had Democrats for 4 years and everyone knows what they can do and it’s scared the hell out of them.
If I were the Republicans, I’d be telling all the voters how important it is to send the Democrats a message they’ll never forget. They need to vote out their Democrat, vote in a Republican, and give the Republicans the necessary power to turn back the Obama agenda. Just having a small majority isn’t going to do it, it’s really important to have a large enough majority for the Democrats and Obama to understand what the word “mandate” really means.
