Eugene Robinson: These spoiled-brat voters are having quite the temper tantrum, aren’t they?

posted at 3:35 pm on September 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via RCP. Don’t misunderstand: This is 100 percent nonpartisan criticism, he insists. It could have been written at any point in the last 10 years.

Funny how he decided to write about it this year, though, huh?

According to polls, Americans are in a mood to hold their breath until they turn blue. Voters appear to be so fed up with the Democrats that they’re ready to toss them out in favor of the Republicans — for whom, according to those same polls, the nation has even greater contempt. This isn’t an “electoral wave,” it’s a temper tantrum…

In the punditry business, it’s considered bad form to question the essential wisdom of the American people. But at this point, it’s impossible to ignore the obvious: The American people are acting like a bunch of spoiled brats.

This is not, I repeat not, a partisan argument. My own political leanings are well-known, but the refusal of Americans to look seriously at the nation’s situation — and its prospects — is an equal-opportunity scourge. Republicans got the back of the electorate’s hand in 2006 and 2008; Democrats will feel the sting this November. By 2012, it will probably be the GOP’s turn to get slapped around again.

The nation demands the impossible: quick, painless solutions to long-term, structural problems. While they’re running for office, politicians of both parties encourage this kind of magical thinking. When they get into office, they’re forced to try to explain that things aren’t quite so simple — that restructuring our economy, renewing the nation’s increasingly rickety infrastructure, reforming an unsustainable system of entitlements, redefining America’s position in the world and all the other massive challenges that face the country are going to require years of effort. But the American people don’t want to hear any of this. They want somebody to make it all better. Now.

Geraghty compares and contrasts this piece with the piece Robinson wrote two years ago about the transcendent enlightened majesty of a people that could elect Barack Obama president. (Watch conservative Matt Lewis echo that point at around 7:40 in the clip.) I’m actually torn on how to react to this. On the one hand, when it comes to dealing with entitlements, Robinson’s right about voters’ reluctance to make hard choices between higher taxes and less spending. On the other hand, when the Democrats took back Congress in 2006, I don’t recall much op-ed blabbage about a “temper tantrum.” Temper tantrums are spontaneous and hysterical; the big blue wave, on the contrary, was a predictable reaction to Bush’s second term having gone miserably, from Katrina to security conditions in Iraq deteriorating to Republican ethics scandals and on and on. Anyone want to try explaining why 9.6 percent unemployment plus a failed, nearly trillion-dollar stimulus plus the utter arrogance of passing a health-care package heavily opposed by most voters at the time shouldn’t generate a similar, entirely predictable reaction? In fact, weren’t Democrats warned repeatedly during the ObamaCare debate — not by their own pundits, of course, who were willing to sacrifice anything to pass universal health care — that this is precisely what would happen? They saw it coming from miles and miles away and did it anyway. They got their bill passed, now we get this. Nothing spontaneous or hysterical about it.

But get used to this, needless to say, for only two things can explain Democratic defeat to the lefty commentariat: (1) Poor “messaging,” which Robinson naturally alludes to in the clip, and (2) the feral, juvenile instincts of anyone who votes Republican against their better interest. As Ace notes, we’ve heard this rhetoric before, haven’t we?

More intelligent people than BJ McBloggyWhiner are already exposing the hypocrisy within Islam. Besides, we should be encouraging hypocrisy in Islam. To be a good practicing Muslim yet decline to kill infidels is surely an act of rank hypocrisy, but one that should be encouraged.

If BJFish wants to post his brain droppings over in the 400-post sockpuppet filled threads at AoS, more power to him. Or, he could start his own blog, but I guess playing to an audience of his mother and the other relatives he could guilt-trip into reading his blog isn’t a very attractive proposition.

Lead me to it! I haven’t seen much except apologists and taqqiyists (if there’s such a word).

Hmm… fair point. Though how do we distinguish between the hypocrite who won’t kill infidels and the taqqiyist who hasn’t killed any yet?

Well, as I said above, I’d read it… “every life has a story,” as Obama’s prayer rug some anonymous sage said.

Mary: Nabeel over at Answering Muslims does a great job as an ex-Muslim of debating various Islamic scholars and generally taking them to the woodshed.

To me, the problem with Islam is that it is a barbarous, violent ideology that is unfortunately followed by lots of good, wholesome people, many of them Americans. On one hand, I hate the misinformation and the PR campaign about Islam being a “religion of peace.” On the other hand, if many American Muslims want to believe that Islam is a peaceful religion, well, shouldn’t we let them believe that? It seems counter productive to get in their face and tell them “no, a true Muslim should be out killing infidels.”

The problem of Islam is probably going to define the 21st century. If democracy can flourish in the Islamic ME, we stand a decent chance at the world becoming a more peaceful, prosperous place. If not….we’re going to have a hell of a fight on our hands.

Mary in LA…you’re the coolest; please don’t ever change.

Temper tantrum: Piss Poor E-Minus, truly the only cretins I’ve ever witnessed invite another to suicide are sick, self-hating, lefties (grab a mirror) who’d never ever consider saying the same to another man’s face (if only…). What the hell are you doing on a conservative blog site? KOS too crowded? I’ve zero respect for you–you deserve none. Seek help immediately. Or, seek me, I’ll take great pleasure in enlightening you. PLEASE.

My initial entry today was intended only to declare Eugene Robinson intellectually and morally vacuous.

*I don’t enjoy mug slinging (that’s why I’m not a frequent blogger), but there’s no way I’ll take disparaging abuse from a clueless cretin. I believe all have a responsibility to have a clue prior to posting.

Fire away, Good Solid E-Minus Shit Head.

And instead you had a temper tantrum and railed against AP because one of your posts got caught in a world filter. So did mine. It’s because you used a flagged word, genius. By the way, we didn’t need your input to know that Robinson is an intellectual vacuum and a dishonest hack.

Oh, and the whole “anyone who disagrees with me is a lefty!” shtick is really tiresome. If all you have is that and the same stupid pun on my screen name repeated ad nauseum, then we’re done here.

It’s not like BJ could say anything that would make me pull the level for a “D.” The stakes are high enough that I don’t really care who is on my team so long as we win.

I’ll apologize for the suicide bit, it was out of line and unnecessary. I shouldn’t lower myself to the level of someone like ernesto who has wished death on fellow HA posters. Still, it’s just pretty aggravating to have someone call me pro-Islamic fascism, or to say that my inherent bias is to not find fault with Islam, while at the same time all of our hand-wringing lefties call us “Islamophobes” and tell us that we just hate Muslims and want to round them up in camps.

Good Solid B-Plus on September 4, 2010 at 7:53 PM

E-Minus, I see you’re tacking. The high road isn’t always easily achievable,is it? Slam me once more and everything’s okay, right? Wrong.

You’ve shown all that you’re a complete piece of shit; morally bankrupt; intellectually vacuous. Eugene Robinson?

…grab that toaster Asshole.

Go ahead: Vote D…after all, know one will know, right?

Nah, ernie, crr6 and co. are kept around by Ed and AP as pets. Sort of like a carnival freakshow for the rest of our amusement.

Good Solid B-Plus on September 4, 2010 at 8:01 PM

Still, it’s just pretty aggravating to have someone call me pro-Islamic fascism…

True. I can’t think of anyone on this entire blog who is pro-Islamic fascism, or even particularly pro-Islam. IMHO, the more moderate would like to see Islam reformed; the more conservative believe that would be difficult to nearly impossible, given the smothering character of Islam’s prescriptions for the minutest aspects of daily life.

AllahPundit’s original site and nic (the mention of which started this whole kerfuffle) were (again IMHO) meant to satirize extremist Islam as much as possible without actually causing the proprietor to get hit with a Fatwa of Death.

And the original Photoshops were hilarious! I do hope they’re archived somewhere.

Mary in LA on September 4, 2010 at 8:02 PM

I miss the wacky humor of “Allah Is In the House”, but I understand why it had to change. First of all, AP and Ed hit the big time; second, ironically, America was in less danger in 2003-2004 than she is now, even though the 9/11 attacks were still fresh then. Finally, IMHO, inside every clown is a broken heart (sounds like a velvet painting, I know), and AP had to drop the mask because, I think, he just ran out of wacky. We’re all older, wearier, and more serious now, and our country is in mortal danger. Hard to do “oho, infidel!” jokes under those circumstances. But the archives are still there, and still funny.

Speaking of tantrums, according to a fellow citizen born in
Canada,turned Lefty operative,Peter Jennings,it occured,in
1994,the The Republican *evolution of ’94,in which,he stat
ed that their was a collective Tantrum fit!!
===========================================================

Jennings came under increasing scrutiny for what some observers deemed a liberal bias. The anchor drew fire from conservatives, such as the MRC and Cal Thomas, for his November 14, 1994 remarks on ABC Radio, in which he analyzed the results of the 1994 US midterm elections.
——————————————————–

“Some thoughts on those angry voters. Ask parents of any two-year-old and they can tell you about those temper tantrums:

the stomping feet, the rolling eyes, the screaming,” said Jennings.

“Imagine a nation full of uncontrolled two-year-old rage.

The voters had a temper tantrum last week….Parenting and governing don’t have to be dirty words: the nation can’t be run by an angry two-year-old.”

(2) the feral, juvenile instincts of anyone who votes Republican against their better interest.

I thought we Republicans are all rich. Therefore, when we vote for lower taxes, we are voting selfish. Voting selfish is voting for one’s better interest. Voting to raise taxes is against our better interest. So I guess he isn’t talking about us, but, rather, about those who who would normally want to take the work of another person’s hands and use it to feather their own nests, and who are having anti-self-interest second thoughts about doing same.

Do I get it?

People often gauge how wise someone is by how much they agree with you. Since voters don’t agree with him then they are of course morons.

This is how I see it: if you are elected, you work for ME. If I, like any employer, isn’t happy with your work, I’m going to fire you. You want to whine about that, go ahead, but just don’t forget who pays whom in this equation. You want to stay in my employ, you please me by doing the job I hired you to do. If you don’t, well…you’re at-will baby. Bye bye.

The nation demands the impossible: quick, painless solutions to long-term, structural problems.

More than that, we ask the government to resist the temptation to create additional long-term, structural problems. And when they prove unable to resist we send them back home.

tartan on September 5, 2010 at 8:08 PM

Eugene Robinson is neither a thinker nor very knowledgeable about history or politics. Mr. Robinson doesn’t seem to understand that there is a soft tyranny going on in our federal government and millions of people are upset about this turn away from what America was founded upon to something more resembling eastern Europe. The electorate is more knowledgeable than at many times in our history. It is the Tea Party folks who are talking about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, not the bomb-throwers and haters on the Left. What the Left calls protests are hate-filled, often violent crowds that call names and burn things. The Tea Party people, who are not professional protesters like the Left usually calls up, are regular people with jobs who have never protested in their life. They love their country, and realize what Obama and company are doing is not what the Founders ever envisioned. Tea Party people are more knowledgeable about our Founding, and our founding documents than any sub-group of the Left and there are polls to support this. Hey Eugene Robinson, go crawl back in your hole, and take a copy of the Constitution with you!
