Eugene Robinson: These spoiled-brat voters are having quite the temper tantrum, aren’t they?
posted at 3:35 pm on September 3, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via RCP. Don’t misunderstand: This is 100 percent nonpartisan criticism, he insists. It could have been written at any point in the last 10 years.
Funny how he decided to write about it this year, though, huh?
According to polls, Americans are in a mood to hold their breath until they turn blue. Voters appear to be so fed up with the Democrats that they’re ready to toss them out in favor of the Republicans — for whom, according to those same polls, the nation has even greater contempt. This isn’t an “electoral wave,” it’s a temper tantrum…
In the punditry business, it’s considered bad form to question the essential wisdom of the American people. But at this point, it’s impossible to ignore the obvious: The American people are acting like a bunch of spoiled brats.
This is not, I repeat not, a partisan argument. My own political leanings are well-known, but the refusal of Americans to look seriously at the nation’s situation — and its prospects — is an equal-opportunity scourge. Republicans got the back of the electorate’s hand in 2006 and 2008; Democrats will feel the sting this November. By 2012, it will probably be the GOP’s turn to get slapped around again.
The nation demands the impossible: quick, painless solutions to long-term, structural problems. While they’re running for office, politicians of both parties encourage this kind of magical thinking. When they get into office, they’re forced to try to explain that things aren’t quite so simple — that restructuring our economy, renewing the nation’s increasingly rickety infrastructure, reforming an unsustainable system of entitlements, redefining America’s position in the world and all the other massive challenges that face the country are going to require years of effort. But the American people don’t want to hear any of this. They want somebody to make it all better. Now.
Geraghty compares and contrasts this piece with the piece Robinson wrote two years ago about the transcendent enlightened majesty of a people that could elect Barack Obama president. (Watch conservative Matt Lewis echo that point at around 7:40 in the clip.) I’m actually torn on how to react to this. On the one hand, when it comes to dealing with entitlements, Robinson’s right about voters’ reluctance to make hard choices between higher taxes and less spending. On the other hand, when the Democrats took back Congress in 2006, I don’t recall much op-ed blabbage about a “temper tantrum.” Temper tantrums are spontaneous and hysterical; the big blue wave, on the contrary, was a predictable reaction to Bush’s second term having gone miserably, from Katrina to security conditions in Iraq deteriorating to Republican ethics scandals and on and on. Anyone want to try explaining why 9.6 percent unemployment plus a failed, nearly trillion-dollar stimulus plus the utter arrogance of passing a health-care package heavily opposed by most voters at the time shouldn’t generate a similar, entirely predictable reaction? In fact, weren’t Democrats warned repeatedly during the ObamaCare debate — not by their own pundits, of course, who were willing to sacrifice anything to pass universal health care — that this is precisely what would happen? They saw it coming from miles and miles away and did it anyway. They got their bill passed, now we get this. Nothing spontaneous or hysterical about it.
But get used to this, needless to say, for only two things can explain Democratic defeat to the lefty commentariat: (1) Poor “messaging,” which Robinson naturally alludes to in the clip, and (2) the feral, juvenile instincts of anyone who votes Republican against their better interest. As Ace notes, we’ve heard this rhetoric before, haven’t we?

A lefty Facebook friend says ‘Tea Parties’ are for little girls and their imaginary friends.
Come Nov 2 she’s going to find out just how imaginary this ‘little girl’s’ friends really are.
That woman has no clue what’s about to happen.
Really.

I have seen a number of Eugene Robinson’s columns at RCP over the past several weeks. Every time it is the same thing. He makes a complete idiot out of himself and 95% of the commenters say so. They beat him intellectually to a bloody pulp. No one can be so stupid. He must either be a complete masochist or a Karl Rove plant to make Obama and the dims look even worse than they already do.

Poor Mr. “Non Partisan” Robinson. He spies a hurricane bearing down on him, and calls it a mere ‘temper tantrum’. One wonders if he will stick to his guns as the storm surge sweeps him and his house of sand out to sea. Will he still mock the Storm then?
Who cares. The beauty of November will be that his ideas will be consigned to the rubbish heap of history. And we can look at that giant midden that was Obamaism and laugh as we remember it was supposed to be a Democratic reich that would last a thousand … err, well at least forty … years.
That my friends will be a dish of true “social” justice. I for one can’t wait to see it served up in November … along with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Watch on November 3rd, if the Rs gain majorities in congress, how the media will term it as the republicans “seizing” control of congress to create the image of a junta or coup. Them guys will be funny.

Deja Vu.
I remember that being ‘media message’ after the ’94 election.
That was excuse for the slaughter: ‘the voters had a tantrum‘.
After all, the body politic would never, ever, reject the guiding hand of liberalism, willingly.
Or so they say.

Yeah. I can’t remember which thread it was, it was a while ago, but he threatened physical violence to one of the other commenters.
It was kinda hilarious at the time. Totally lost it and sounded like a 3rd grader calling a high school senior out behind the school for a beating. Bishop, if I recall correctly. Wish I could remember what the original thread was about.
Of course, that was the whole problem, besides the threat of violence, it was a classic case of thread hijacking. Lesson to us all about getting caught up in personal stuff on a thread.

I’m unimpressed with this Robinson guy. He writes reasonably well, but he speaks poorly: stuttering, clearing his throat and umm-ing all over the place. I don’t know… maybe it’s jet lag, a poor night of sleep, a cold–whatever. But I expected him to be more articulate.

Is it just me, or is there an aura of deja vu swirling around the liberal left media?
I could have sworn they pulled this tired old ‘temper tantrum’ polemic out when the Republicans took over the House
way back when.
Didn’t bother me then. Makes me feel all kind of warm and fuzzy now.

It was a couple of weeks ago on one of the GZM threads. Early on in the thread I engaged TRC and soon after that AP issued both of us a warning. I wisely backed off, but TRC then posted a somewhat snarkish reply to AP, and then later in the thread went ballistic on another poster. He/she couldn’t keep their mouth shut, which is usually what happens.

I’m sorry he doesn’t like the picture that is coming toward him and all other little leftist, but they brought it on themselves.
Now if only the Rino’s will get a clue.
Noelie on September 3, 2010 at 7:45 PM
Funny how this is a temper tantrum, and what happened in 2008 was not: conservatives not showing up to vote, others fed up with (R)s voted for Obama, and lets not talk about the racial aspects because we were supposed to vote on the person’s qualifications and content of their character, not the color of their skin.
But he is right: This is a temper tantrum. We are ticked off about the gov’t taking away our rights and forcing us to do things we dont want. Abusing Eminent Domain for commerical development is one of the BIG ones in my book.

Liberals are an odd little bunch, eh? We had the “election season kick-off” last night; several hundred Dallas Tea Partiers, Andrew Breitbart, Ginny Thomas, Gary Aldrich, Mark Meckler and Jenny Beth Martin, Drew Ryun, Mark Davis, Jeff Bolton, etc., etc., etc.
Mr. Robinson: you should know there was no anger in that ballroom last night. No one was throwing tantrums. We simply solidified our resolve to awaken victorious on November 3rd and to look to 2012 that same day.
Our fight has just begun. We owe it to our Founding Fathers. We owe to those who fought against tyranny 200+ years ago – many who lost their lives. We are not afraid of hard choices – we value them. WE know how to WORK for what is right.

Beyond laughable, Eugene Robinson is an f’ing joke! Intellectually bankrupt, Eugene Robinson has sold his soul to the Impostor Messiah. To actually hear E.R. speak is stupefying. Or perhaps your posting was too long. The Management frowns on page-length comments, and frankly, so do most commenters here.
You might try reposting your original posting by paragraphs to see which ones hit the filter. Or you might head over to Ace’s place, where you can say pretty much anything you want to and don’t even have to register (the sock puppetry is some of the funniest stuff that goes on there!). Or you might, you know, get your own blog. Hope this helps!

For years, the Scots were not allowed to hold office in the colonies. They were shunned and attacked. Only after they cornered 51% if the tobacco business and became an economic and political force was conflict with the English possible. This was not a temper tantrum by spoiled brats, just a continuation of a centuries old fight for independence from tyranny.

I also hope he starts his own blog. Someone in a position to expose hypocrisy within Islam would be doing (if I may put it this way) the Lord’s work.

No. Not til this thread dies or I’m booted. . . .
E-Minus: “reification?” well played Mauer! (Were I not over 35 I’d “LOL” at your exhaustive word reach.)
But please, don’t ever let one’s personal, actual, been there lived it, experiences intrude upon your wannabe views of life external. Instead, just discount all that doesn’t align with your preconceived notions. God knows you’re wayyy smarter that anyone who’s actually lived that which you so freely critique.
E-, get off your ass, get out there, learn! Know what the hell you’re talking about before you dare camp out on a popular blog site and espouse your all-knowing, universal, yet clueless wisdom. You’re part of the problem…in no way part of any solution.
Until then, help lend HA credibility by taking a seat on the bench!
* I’ll toss the toaster to you…enjoy your bath.

If jumping to conclusions and being an abrasive douchebag was a sport, you’ve have more MVP awards than Barry Bonds.
No one here cares about your “extensive” life experiences with Islam. Guess what? You’re not the only one here who has lived in the Arab world, you’re just the biggest asshole among them. Have fun at AoS with the sockpuppets and endless stream of trolls.

Also, it’s relatively hilarious that in a topic about Robinson’s ridiculous screed about voters having a tempter tantrum, BJ Phisch is having an honest to goodness temper tantrum and begging to be banned.

Oh, good, you are still around! Might I suggest “going out and coming in again,” as one of my friends says? You might start by introducing yourself, since you said you don’t post much (I’d never seen any of your posts, myself). And as I said above, you’d be doing the Lord’s work by exposing hypocrisy within Islam, just as those who expose hypocrisy in churches or in government are doing.
I’ll start: This story was told to me by a Canadian professor of architecture. He was fluent in several languages, including Arabic, and though not Muslim himself, had read the Koran in the original. He had friends in high places, and one day was invited to the Ascot Races. In the box with him was an Arab prince, who startled the good professor by ordering a double gin, straight up. Through the course of the day, he demolished several gins. The prof could restrain himself no longer, and finally asked, “You are a Muslim, aren’t you, sir?”
“Yes,” replied the Prince.
“But doesn’t the Koran say [string of Arabic]?”
“Ah, yes!” said the Prince. “But [string of Arabic] means “Thou shalt drink no wine. Gin is not wine.” And knocked back another one.
