Dead cat bounce from Oval Office speech?
posted at 2:18 pm on September 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama had to hope that a war speech with all of the trappings of the Oval Office would provide at least a temporary respite from consistently declining poll numbers. Daily tracking polls by Rasmussen and Gallup show no bounce three days later. In fact, Obama’s standing among likely voters declined since the speech:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-three percent (43%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -16 (see trends). …
Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. Fifty-five percent (55%) disapprove. A Month-by-Month review of the president’s numbers shows amazing stability. On a full-month basis, the president has been at 46% or 47% approval for nine straight months.
Rasmussen surveys likely voters for its tracking poll, which gives it a little more predictive value, while Gallup’s poll tracks general-population adults, the least predictive model. Even with the wider sample type, though, Gallup could find no bounce. Obama had a 45/47 rating on Tuesday before giving the speech, and today’s rating at Gallup is 46/46, with disapproval going up a single point. That comprises two days of polling after the speech with no upward trajectory.
At Rasmussen, the news is worse. On Tuesday, Obama had a 48/51 approval rating among likely voters. Today, with two polling cycles out of three coming after the Oval Office speech, his approval rating is 44/55. That’s an eight-point increase in the gap in just three days, and it’s doubtful that those numbers will improve with today’s jobs report, either.
At best, this Oval Office speech was a wasted opportunity. Obama flopped, and the people most engaged in the political process know it.

Blacks and loony lefties I can understand. But when are independents who make up part of his 17% mildly approve finally going to dump him>
I wonder whether they simply can’t bring themselves to tell posters what they really think about Obama.
To paraphrase George Costanza, “It’s not racism to disapprove of Obama if he’s incompetent.”

Robbing the wagon pullers to pay the wagon riders is very popular with the perpetual victim classes. To them, it is not incometence, it is righteousness.

What blows my mind is how urban Blacks continue to support the party that has relegated them to the status of government livestock on the vote farm.

How can we find out how many actually DID watch ? Was it on every network ? Can’t remember who to check with .. hmm.
Would be interesting to contrast this one with the other speeches… hehehe.

This has to be a result of racism, nothing else could possibly explain these poor numbers. /s
I don’t know what he can do at this point to gain back some approval ratings.

I watched (yea ok I have no life).
Two things struck me. First, Obummer appeared to have used shoe polish on his hair. Secondly, the real remodeling of the Oval Office will happen in 2012.

He’s become robotic. So I’m sure after his stint as the Vacationing President is over, Disney could find a place for him, as an animatronic president in one of their shows. ;)

I am pretty sure the only reason he even gave this speech is because Michelle told him he had to so everybody could see the new drapes.

Ed, I think it’s time you retire this particular phrase. You use it all the time. And I think (correct me if I’m wrong), you’re the only one here who does? Turns my stomach every time I see it (I know it’s an old expression, but some expressions die for a reason).

Speaking of polling numbers, I honestly think that Levi would be as capable of ruining the country as Obama.
mobydutch on September 3, 2010 at 7:13 PM
I’m waxing nostalgic tonight.
Just after Obama was inaugurated, I wondered if our nation would recover from our messiah complex. The level of ardor for Obama scared the daylights out of me. I was told I was racist for opposing his policies, ideology, and agenda. In January of 2009, it seemed blasphemy to speak against him.
In March of 2009, I began watching his poll numbers. They seemed too high, even after he passed the boondoggle “stimulus”. But then, the Tea Party and Town Hall summer hit, and with great relief, I learned that maybe my beloved nation wasn’t turning socialist after all.
THIS, folks, is the true hope and change: by losing out collective reason and voting for a Marxist, we learned that we really ARE our ancestor’s children. We are the descendants of those who risked it all to cross oceans and make their fortunes by the sweat of their own brow. We are the descendants of those who believed in liberty over security; who wanted individual freedom and the chance to find success, or even failure, as long as it was on their terms, not on the terms of the tyrant.
We have not forgotten our heritage. We remember. And we’ll correct this national nightmare beginning on November 2nd.
Long live America!

My theory is that no one bothered to listen. Why should we. I had it one but nothing he has ever said has ever turned out to be true.
I hope people have written him off.
Now we have to figure out how to run this country without a President. He only messes stuff up anyway, letting him keep improving his golf scores and having concerts.

Mr. Class President,
I have some advice for you. When you give a speech to the nation, you have to at least pretend that you like the job.

I don’t know why, but I always thought that phrase came from Heinlein’s “Moon is a Harsh Mistress” — i was wrong. I still don’t think it applies (as much as I love the phrase) – as far as I can see the dead cat did not bounce this time. But perhaps the numbers show otherwise and I’m just blind to it.

It was such a short speech, if you blinked, you missed it. Unless you watch Glee and turned on Fox at 8 p.m. (I don’t watch it, and I couldn’t tell you what the other networks air at that time. But, it’s when I eat dinner some nights).
In many ways, it was the anti-speech. Yes, it was during prime-time, but on a random Tuesday night in the last week of August. Obama was hoping no one would watch it.

Are you on rock cocaine, Morrissey?! Missed opportunity to do what?! Announce that he’s going to let the free market do what it does best, slash taxes and defend the borders? Missed his opportunity to say he’s going to kill all the un-Constitutional institutions the federal government maintains, so he can make deep slashes to taxes, and eliminate some taxes, altogether? Perhaps he missed his opportunity to say he’s in adamant opposition to gay rights, and will criminalize the presence of homosexuals in the armed forces by rightfully charging them with false swearing, if they say they’re not gay?
Really, I don’t understand what you’re thinking. You work for a website that used to be pretty truly Conservative, but make remarks as though you expect the most racist, arrogant, un-American, freedom-hating, Constitution-hating president in our modern history to say something positive and follow it up with freedom-affirming action to show he’s serious. Surely you’re still not babbling about his failure to properly give former president Bush credit for his successes in maintaining stability in Afghanistan, and for quelling the vast majority of terrorists in Iraq? So what will that do? He gives Bush the credit he deserves, then follows that up by saying he’s going to tax everybody into the gutters and burn down their houses to save the Earth. There was no opportunity to do anything positive, because Barack Hussein Obama is not a positive man. He has nothing positive on his agenda, and does not mean America well. I would think that would be obvious to you, by now, but apparently it is not.
