Dead cat bounce from Oval Office speech?
posted at 2:18 pm on September 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama had to hope that a war speech with all of the trappings of the Oval Office would provide at least a temporary respite from consistently declining poll numbers. Daily tracking polls by Rasmussen and Gallup show no bounce three days later. In fact, Obama’s standing among likely voters declined since the speech:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-three percent (43%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -16 (see trends). …
Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. Fifty-five percent (55%) disapprove. A Month-by-Month review of the president’s numbers shows amazing stability. On a full-month basis, the president has been at 46% or 47% approval for nine straight months.
Rasmussen surveys likely voters for its tracking poll, which gives it a little more predictive value, while Gallup’s poll tracks general-population adults, the least predictive model. Even with the wider sample type, though, Gallup could find no bounce. Obama had a 45/47 rating on Tuesday before giving the speech, and today’s rating at Gallup is 46/46, with disapproval going up a single point. That comprises two days of polling after the speech with no upward trajectory.
At Rasmussen, the news is worse. On Tuesday, Obama had a 48/51 approval rating among likely voters. Today, with two polling cycles out of three coming after the Oval Office speech, his approval rating is 44/55. That’s an eight-point increase in the gap in just three days, and it’s doubtful that those numbers will improve with today’s jobs report, either.
At best, this Oval Office speech was a wasted opportunity. Obama flopped, and the people most engaged in the political process know it.

“Dead cat bounce” is a great, if graphic, way to describe it. I wonder how many people actually watched it – I know I didn’t. I’d rather watch dead cats bouncing.

How many people actually watched the speech? Most Americans have tuned out the Iraq war for one reason or another and most people did not expect someone who opposed the surge to begin with to be honest about it after the fact. So who actually watched?

No one cares what Obama has to say about anything. We’ve learned several things about him in two years. First, like most politicians, he doesn’t mean what he says when he knows the camera’s on. Second, his actions have been so extreme, so thuggish, and so authoritarian that little attention will ever be paid to whatever moderate tone he strikes in the upcoming midterm elections, such as he‘s trying to do by floating “tax cuts.” He can’t reinvent himself, neither can the democrats. They’ve got their fannies sticking too far out, exposed, warts and all. That’s right, I wrote “fannies”.

There will always be the hardcore 30% who will always approve of the president. And then there are those who take a little longer to admit to themselves they goofed in voting for this man. It’s not always easy admitting the truth to one’s self and we are only 19 months into this man’s presidency.

We actually had younger soldiers, who by the way I would characterize as still looking for their political identity, comment on watching the President’s speech and they were asking what the economy had to do with celebrating the end of the war. He’s not impressing anyone anymore it seems. I have one last liberal friend who I think is close to turning the corner on him.

I have a great idea how he could have made a better speech. He could have gone over to Iraq and rode around in a tank. That would have been a significant improvement.
Seriously, though, a man of character would have done something special to commemorate such an occasion. He could have stopped in Texas and picked up GWB, flown to Kuwait to greet the arriving troops. A speech could have revolved around shared appreciation of the hard work and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. He could have framed his remarks around a theme that some things are more important than partisan politics.
Unfortunately, we have a man as president that you would not want walking your dog while you’re on vacation.

A 27% approval rating tells me Obama has lost almost all voters except Blacks. Of all the voting blocks in America, it never ceases to amaze me how Blacks tend to remain the most monolithic electorate. It would be interesting if we could discuss why that is, but the subject is far too taboo for discussion in our brave new PC world.
