Video: The obligatory “Jan Brewer freezes up during the debate” clip

posted at 3:55 pm on September 2, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Ben Smith, it’s well and truly painful — but endearing too. Reminds me a little of that “singing candidate” from Rhode Island, in fact, minus the nuttiness: As much as you might cringe, we can all relate to the goofy humanity of the moment. Alternate headline: “Jan Brewer to win reelection by 15 points now instead of 20.”

Actually, she sounds a bit like a beta male out on a first date. Or so I’m told. Ahem.

She could have danced the tarantella nude on the coffee table during the debate and still have won.

amerpundit on September 2, 2010 at 3:56 PM

I would still vote for her for governor if I lived in AZ. This lady has guts, lacking in some men!

Those sticking points happen. Dust yourself off and move on, Jan, you’ve obviously proven that you are looking out for Arizona. Just blame it on your TOTAZ….or your lack thereof….that’s what Chrissy Matthews is doing these days…

TOTAZ: teleprompter of AZ

Awkward. But at least she didn’t call anyone bitter or antipathetic.

When your intent is to not answer a question, you don’t have to think about an answer. You just start rambling. The only thing you have to remember is to make sure you say “the United States of America”, “create jobs”, and “reduce spending”.

Just for reference, George W. Bush totally bombed out in his debate against Democrat Garry Mauro when he was running for re-election in 1998, and the debate was only about 3 1/2 weeks before the election. And as a result of the verbal flubs, Bush only won the race by a 49-point margin (of course it didn’t hurt that the debate was in El Paso, on a football Friday and aired on Texas PBS stations — he probably could have gone out on stage and done 60 minutes of armpit noises and still beaten Mauro by at least 45 points).

Been there, done that…only someone naive and inexperienced would consider this a major mistake, or someone who is anti-Brewer.
Everyone who has ever spent time speaking to groups, this has happened, and it doesn’t matter how “smart”, experienced, professional, sometimes you just go blank.
Usually you have an “out”, an established line or joke that takes the edge.
As a stutterer, or at least a reformed stutterer, we have our little “nuances” to get us through those rough spots when speaking.
I can spot a stutterer, who has overcome his/her stutter, in minutes of a speech. Bill Walton is a great example, he has several “outs” that he uses when he falters. But people like Jan, who seldom stumble, get caught off guard.

fourdeucer on September 2, 2010 at 4:16 PM

If Arizona voters (or US voters, for that matter) put speechmaking skills above actions, we have worse problems than I thought. I couldn’t care less if a politician stutters worse than Jimmy Stewart, as long as they pursue the right policies.
