Matthews: Say, perhaps Obama relies on the teleprompter a tad too much

posted at 10:55 am on September 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Can we say that a consensus has been reached that Barack Obama’s Oval Office speech was a disappointment? If Chris Matthews is busy blaming the teleprompter for an Obama speech, then clearly the President flopped in a big way. In this clip from last night’s Hardball, Chris Matthews can’t quite blame Obama for the bad performance, so he blames TOTUS. Remember when the Left bristled at conservative teasing at the omnipresent device, which once accompanied Obama to the center of a rodeo ring during the campaign? Suddenly it’s cool to blame TOTUS for the President’s flaws, or rather it’s necessary:

Actually, this makes no sense at all. Yes, Obama relies on the ‘prompter far too much and in venues where he should be speaking from notes or off the cuff, but what modern President has winged an Oval Office speech? There is no dais, no podium, and no live audience present in the Oval Office, which is why Presidents look into the camera through their addresses — and why the teleprompter is standard equipment. It doesn’t get between Obama and his audience any more or less than it did with Obama’s predecessors, who didn’t read speeches from handwritten notes or cue cards that would force them to avert their gaze and look, well, shifty. That’s the beauty of a teleprompter, and why it’s so popular even with speakers not named Barack Obama.

No, the problem in this speech wasn’t the equipment. It was the speech itself and the man who delivered it. Matthews apparently can’t bring himself to admit that Obama is not the greatest orator since Cicero but is rather ordinary and pedestrian when asked to give anything more than a campaign speech.

When Matthews is starting to flip-flop within 24 hours, you know he’s reading the tea leaves saying that everyone else hated the speech and are making fun of him for talking it up immediately afterward.

but what modern President has winged an Oval Office speech?

A President Bolton would be able to take promptings from his moustache, and it’d be the best speech we’d ever hear, ever.

TOTUS is the last White House aide Obama will ever throw under the bus, because aside from the awful sound of crunching metal and glass, doing away with his video crutch would mean Obama would actually have to do serious speech and question prep. That is not what he signed on to being president for — the plan was for him to simply read off boilerplate offered up via TOTUS, for the media to then orgasm and exclaim no more beautiful words have been spoken in the history of civilization, and then everyone goes along with what Team Obama wants to do or have enough race cards to fill the MGM Grand dumped on their head.

There wasn’t supposed to be any heavy lifting during the presidency; it was supposed to be rule by exacutive fiat. If Matthews thinks Obama doesn’t look good now with TOTUS, wait ’till he sees how he performs without it, unless he’s willing to totally change his work habits.

jon1979 on September 2, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Heh. Bringing the teleprompter into meetings is pretty hilarious.

It’s not that I expect them to just admit he’s an empty suit but I just thought they would be more creative in their explanations as to why he’s a failure. The teleprompter? Really? Maybe they should consider looking closer into who is writing the speeches. I have never really bought into the smartest guy in the world theory but now I just think he’s a zero.

This proves once and for all that the official MSLSD leg humper is, dare I use the R word?, yes, RETARDED. “The teleprompter is Obama’s menace.” Huh? You mean, the evil thing is chasing him around and he cant avoid it? Well, we know he cant avoid it, because it’s his CRUTCH, not his menace.

Leg humper Matthews would follow this imposter off the edge of the Grand Canyon, and yet he cant see how he completely damns The One’s supposed smartpower by admitting he’s just a cipher completely dependent on written cues. And he admits Obama has no soul at the same time. Sorry, leg humper, you’re hopelessly retarded. Further proof will be that you’re not likely to even notice what a dunce you are after November 2nd.

I remember a Doctor Zero tweet from a while back to the effect that rarely has a movement been so right about a person as conservatives were about Barack Obama. And now, much delayed, the rest of America is gradually figuring out what we tried to tell them two and three years ago.

David Shane on September 2, 2010 at 11:15 AM

Yeah Tingles, it can’t be that the Lightworker really isn’t that great a speaker. It can’t be that his speechwriters, whose forte is high-sounding campaign tripe, find it increasingly difficult now that they are governing and must produce results to spin the failures of his leftist agenda into anything remotely inspirational. His unwillingness to admit error or give due credit to those who rightly disagreed with him reveals pettiness and smallness of character. The attempt to make political hay by suggesting the war in Iraq is responsible for our economic problems reveals his crass willingness to distort the facts and exploit what should have been a big thank-you to the troops for political gain.

Chrissy may still get tingles up his leg when the Lightworker speaks, but that is something warm and wet running down the other leg when he reads the polls.
