AP: Facts in short supply in Obama speech
posted at 10:12 am on September 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
After Barack Obama’s second Oval Office speech of his term, the Associated Press decided to fact check it, a rather tough job considering the vague nature of the address. Still, the AP managed to deconstruct a number of Obama’s declarations in the speech, mainly but not entirely in the assumptions he presented for his arguments. When Obama turned to the economy for a brief and insubstantial interlude, for instance, he blamed the deficit on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which the AP points out didn’t keep Congress from nearly balancing the budget during the Bush years:
OBAMA:”Unfortunately, over the last decade, we have not done what is necessary to shore up the foundation of our own prosperity. We have spent over a trillion dollars at war, often financed by borrowing from overseas. This, in turn, has shortchanged investments in our own people, and contributed to record deficits.”
THE FACTS: This is partly true. For sure, the costly Iraq and Afghanistan wars have contributed to the nation’s budget deficit — but not by as much as Obama suggests. The current annual deficit is now an estimated $1.5 trillion. But as recently as 2007, the budget deficit was just $161.5 billion. And that was years after war expenses were in place for both the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.
Most of the current deficit is due to the longest recession since the 1930s. It has seriously depressed tax revenues while increasing costs to the government — including social safety-net programs such as unemployment insurance and spending by both the outgoing Bush and incoming Obama administrations on stimulus programs and on bailouts of banks and automakers.
Actually, the AP doesn’t quite get this one right, either. The deficits rose in part because of the recession and the drop in revenue to the federal government in caused, but only in small part. The main driver of budget deficits has been a 38% increase in federal spending from Democratic Congresses since they took power in January 2007.
They also disagree with the predicate for the entire speech:
OBAMA:”Tonight, I am announcing that the American combat mission in Iraq has ended.”
THE FACTS: Peril remains for the tens of thousands of U.S. troops still in Iraq, who are likely if not certain to engage violent foes. Counterterrorism is chief among their continuing missions, pitting them against a lethal enemy. Several thousand special operations forces, including Army Green Berets and Navy SEALs, will continue to hunt and attempt to kill al-Qaida and other terrorist fighters — working closely with Iraqi forces. Obama said, “Of course, violence will not end with our combat mission,” while stopping short of a full accounting of the hazards ahead for U.S. troops.
This one should puzzle everyone. We still have combat troops in Iraq; they may not be in cities or taking the lead in security operations any longer, but the 50,000 troops that remain are not all logistics technicians by any stretch of the imagination. They will take part in operations that will go “hot,” and we will still take casualties from those operations on occasion. How will Obama square that with his claim that the combat mission is over? Wouldn’t it have been better to position this as a planned change in operations that shows Iraq able to direct and control its own security operations, with Americans ready to support them?
Part of politics is setting expectations, and Obama appears to have set this one to extremely unrealistic levels.
Finally, the AP notices the whiff of the flip-flop on the surge, and wonders why Obama didn’t bother to explain it:
Obama is reciting almost the exact language of the Bush administration’s rationale for the Iraq surge: to buy time and space for the Iraqis to reach political accommodations and to strengthen their own security forces. That’s quite a change from Obama’s stand as a presidential candidate, when he criticized it. Obama seems to be embracing the troop surge logic now, even though it’s clear that the Iraqis have yet to achieve the necessary level of reconciliation to form an enduring government.
If he had to explain it, then he would have had to credit George W. Bush for implementing it and defying Democrats to stick with the plan — including then-Senator Barack Obama. Apparently, that was a task that proved too much for our current Commander in Chief.

Medved had a dynamite juxtaposition of audio yesterday. In the first clip, Obama told the troops just yesterday that “you’ve made America safer.”
In the next, it was a clip of Candidate Obama in front of a friendly audience calling the Iraq war “a dumb war.”
So this “dumb war” that the troops fought and died in made us safer.
Twist out that pretzel for us, O-bots. Who is to be believed – candidate Obama or President Obama?

How is this different from Bush’s infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech on May 1, 2003? We know NOW that the enemy quietly went into hiding for several months, then fomented violence in the Sunni Triangle for four years or so until the “surge” that Obama opposed enabled peaceful Sunnis to gain the upper hand.
Iraq is more stable NOW than it was in 2006, THANKS TO THE SURGE, but there is still no Executive government in Iraq that has majority support from the Iraqi parliament. This is eerily similar to 2006, when the Bush Administration thought that the December 2005 Iraqi elections would result in a stable government, and the Sunni Triangle flared up while Iraqi politicians squabbled for months over who should do what.
Bush belatedly order the “surge” in November 2006 after Republicans lost the midterm elections, starting from a “base” of 130,000 troops. If violence flares up again in Iraq, in the absence of a Government with the support of Parliament, will Obama have the stomach to order a new “surge” from a base of 50,000 troops?
Deja vu all over again?

Obama’s willful minimizing of the importance of the Surge and it’s success is yet another example of a narcissistic leader who puts his own politics before country.
Talking about the success of Iraq without crediting the surge is no different than talking about the success of WWII without crediting D-Day.

Besides the Spec Ops people still in country, there is IIRC, a full Stryker Brigade which has been re designated as some sort of security unit. But it contains the full ToE of a combat Stryker Bde and is not some glorified MP Btn.Also as the Iraq campaign showed, MP units became motorized infantry as they participated in combat ops, and several female MPs received medals and combat badges.

My husband is in Iraq right now on his first deployment. So far I have been handling it rather well, but the last couple of days have been really hard. I think a lot of it has to do with all of this talk about winning and it being over when it isn’t. I feel like most of the media is painting this picture that the work and the danger is over and the troops there are just returning the keys to the desk which couldn’t be further from the truth. It is frustrating and upsetting to hear our President talk like this when my husband and so many other spouses, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters and friends are still in harms way fighting for freedom. I miss him and am proud of him and I wish that his boss was proud of him too.

GrannyDee on September 1, 2010 at 11:08 AM
Two things about Obama’s segue from the war to the economy (re: the connection between national and economic security) struck me as odd:
1) “That effort must begin within our own borders.” Can this guy be serious with this statement? This president has zero interest in securing our borders, which a) has a huge impact in the government’s ability to protect its citizens and b) adversely impacts the budgets of states that have to deal with the influx of tens of millions of illegal immigrants.
2) Now Obama wants to polish his apple by talking about America’s long history of “promoting liberty”. This is the same guy that has spent the better part of his presidency denigrating this country on his global apology tour.
Putz.

There are 7 Stryker Brigades in Iraq right now. They renamed them “Advise and Assist” Brigades.
Drudge had it last week from the Army Times. I posted in one of the threads last night. I will find it again.
In the article it explains that we have: Light/Stryker/ Heavy Infantry brigades.
It is a charade to say we don’t have combat arms brigades in Iraq.

The only time I find myself in agreement with Obama is when he keeps a Bush policy.

I recommend you stay in contact with your husbands command back here. Get that Sargeant Major’s phone number and use it. If you’ve got a problem, either personally (missing your husband to the point of depression), or otherwise (financially, the sink is clogged, car needs brakes, etc..), you get that SM on the phone. He’ll help you. That’s his job.
By helping you, the SM can unload the worry from your husband. That makes him a better soldier. And that makes him safer.
There must be a wife’s support organization. Get in it if you aren’t already. I was Navy years ago and we had one (even though I wasnt’ married) and it was very active and supportive. The wife of our senior enlisted (the Chief of the Boat..COB) could call the Captain of our opposite crew and get shit done when someone needed help and we were at sea.
Best wishes to you and your husband.

I appreciate that the AP decided to fact-check the speech. That said, who was Obama trying to fool? Everyone knows he was against the surge. Everyone knows we still have troops on the (battle) ground in Iraq. Everyone knows (according to the CBO) Obama’s Stiumuls spent more than the 8 years in Iraq. Devoting only 2 minutes to the economy during a speech on Freedom in Iraq was at best bizare! And his call for making the economy the “central focus” when he and Democrats have spent the past 18 months on ObamaCare with no plan for our financial crisis, leaves me asking: Who would believe anything he said?!!
Perhaps he made the oval office address to the nation, in order to have something to hang on the wall in his presidential library. A half-term senator with ZERO experience must have something besides perfectly creased pants, vacation photos, and golf gloves if the library is going to draw a crowd.
