Open thread: Fiorina and Boxer debate
posted at 9:42 pm on September 1, 2010 by Allahpundit
10 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT. Via Gabe Malor, you can watch below or at C-SPAN. Remember, the race is basically a dead heat at this point and, according to lefty pollster PPP, the big red wave is such that California actually qualifies as a battleground state this year. So … yeah, this is kind of important.
To put you in the mood, here’s the latest from Charlie Cook, who was last seen predicting utter destruction for the Democrats this fall. His new prediction: Even more utter destruction.
Simply put, Democrats find themselves heading into a midterm election that looks as grisly as any the party has faced in decades. It isn’t hard to find Democratic pollsters who privately concede that the numbers they are looking at now are worse than what they saw in 1994.
The race-by-race outlook confirms the dire forecasts. Cook Political Report House Editor David Wasserman points out that at this point, 32 Democratic incumbents are running even or behind their Republican challengers in one or more public or private polls. At this point in 2006, when Republicans lost control of Congress, only 11 GOP incumbents were running even or behind…
In the Senate, while the odds still favor Democrats holding on to a narrow majority, it is not only mathematically possible for the GOP to capture a majority this year, but it has become plausible. The odds of Democrats capturing even one currently Republican-held seat appear to be getting longer. Meanwhile, Republicans are running ahead or roughly even in 11 Democratic-held seats, one more than necessary for control of the Senate to flip. It’s still a tall order but not crazy to say that Republicans will win the Senate.
While we wait, enjoy this clip at Newsbusters of Bill Press reassuring Ed Schultz that election night will be a morgue in Boehner’s office and a party in Pelosi’s. I think he’s kidding, but given the source, I’m not sure.

Turned on TV for the 2nd time this year. (The first was an antenna check.)
Boxer was all TPM. SOS. Even had to refer to Fienstein 5 – 6 times for supposed accomplishments Boxer could not otherwise claim.
Fiorina was knowledgeable and flexible. Had practiced and memorized in what was a clearly hostile venue. She won the crowd. Without the first ad homenium.
But the image at the end was the killer. Boxer in a grey pants suit vs. Fiorina in a green skirt suit. And Fiorina kept the stage for a victory lap.
So many great candidates even in CA.

I take it Ms. Fiorina has won over some HotAir members tonight? What took y’all so long?
SouthernGent on September 1, 2010 at 11:42 PM
you don’t get to be a female CEO of a fortune 500 company like HP by being a dumbass. That’s all I can say about that. You could tell the huge gap in intelligence on that stage.

I was very disappointed w/Fiorina. So many missed opportunities. Turned off the debate when she said she would not take a stand on prop 32—-which would overturn the CA legislatures AB32 global warming butt rape they gave us. Boxer never gave in and to her credit she took a stand. If a middle class guy like me can choose to be informed and able to take/defend my positions then I expect our candidates to as well. I voted for Fiorina in the primary and will in the general. All she has going for her is she is not Boxer.

I got home in time to see the end of the debate. My wife taped it and I’m gonna go back and watch some. BUT…the view of the “Panelists” at the end is PRICELESS!!! they look utterly PISSED!!! Their annoited one (aka: Babs “The Bitch” Boxer”) got her clock cleaned!!
Justrand on September 1, 2010 at 11:53 PM
Yeah, it was kind of stunning. Boxer is as dumb as a rock, and an hour on camera with Carly was kind of like watching MIT vs Animal House – without the humor and charm.
peski on September 1, 2010 at 11:54 PM
Thank God for small favors. Boxer lived her life off the government dole. Fiorina ran a company and made decisions she was accountable for. Fiorina lived in a world where money really matters, paying bills was a necessity.
Boxer has no clue what that is like.

I think the moderator had something to do with that.

arnold ziffel: ” All she has going for her is she is not Boxer.”
Which is MORE than enough!!! But Carly cleaned Babs worthless clock, especially when a bullshit panel was trying all they could to help OLD Babs!!

I saw her as soft on global warming too. I thought she could have talked about losing jobs overseas if we didn’t support Prop 23. Other than that though, I thought she performed strong.
El_Terrible on September 2, 2010 at 12:03 AM
I hope to hell Carly busts out an ad in October using the “Call me Senator” clip. That would be a perfect reminder of just how arrogant these liberals are. It’s not everyday your opponent gives you a ready-made TV ad, but this is just too good not to use. Fiorina better use it.

Don’t forget, sending Waxman to DC was a part of the “Keep Beverly Hills Beautiful” campaign… having him live in BH year round would drop property values 20%

Who is gonna stop them ?
Who do you think the dems pander to over here ?
US Citizens ? US citizens are tolerated here because they can be forced pay taxes , for illegals to get benefits .

Boxer was outclassed, but Fiorina has an annoyingly shrill “s” that makes her a tad difficult to listen to. She doesn’t come across as particularly likable, either, while Boxer looks like an amiable dunce. The moderators made sure to hit Fiorina with all the social issues that many Californians are proud of supporting: anti-gun laws, abortion, the children, and green energy.
Boxer, on the other hand, sounded like a tool whenever she talked about job creation or the economy. That BS doesn’t fly in CA anymore. I wish that Fiorina had mentioned how many CA businesses were leaving the state because of over-regulation instead of mentioning it as a general principle. That would have resonated.
It might be enough to edge Boxer out.
Aardvark on September 2, 2010 at 1:16 AM
I suggest we help Firoina, unless we want another Boxer term.

And yet it was Sarah who had the brains to back Carly when all the “real conservatives” were pining over Chuck DeVore.
You got a whole lot of fail going on there Joe!
Palin was smart enough to run a very complicated state, and smart enough to have Big Oil crying “uncle.” She’s plenty smart pal. Smarter than the rest of the so-called 2012 prospects.

I think all the notable people predicting a Republican/Conservative tsunami in the upcoming elections are either ill informed or trying to encourage Democrats/Liberals to flood the polls to force a ripple instead. California is a deep blue state, and it will stay that way. Forever. In fact, it will get even bluer as the years roll by. I suspect there will be a brand new color in the rainbow invented by California voters eventually. It will be in the blue spectrum but unable to be seen with the naked eye.
Those people who would fancy themselves as some type of quasi-clairvoyant, with no solid evidence to support their predictions, and whom are notable enough in the field of journalism that they are linked and quoted on reputable websites and in print need to stop. Now. Before they actually do light a fire under the feet of the Defeatocrat voters causing them to come out in droves. Please.

I was disappointed that Fiorina didn’t point out to the troll that the reason the jobs at HP were shipped overseas was due to state and federal taxes/regulations. If Boxer had her way she would stop all business that used oil/coal fired electric plants. She, Boxer, is so stupid with her “Green” job BS that she doesn’t understand the real world. She said the the green industry would create millions of jobs in California. BS! Germany and Spain are now defunding their green energy as the biggest waste of gov. money in their history. The green solar industry in Spain was caught using diesel generators to produce electricity because it was paid 15% more than regular electricity because it was solar! Fiorina rocked and if the voters in Ca. can put their bongs down long enough to vote she will win.
inspectorudy on September 2, 2010 at 2:16 AM
First Murray in Wa st, then Boxer.
If that happens, the Sun will cool down. I just cannot see either happening. But….Brown won in Ma.
I suppose it’s possible, but it’s one thing to be defeatist, it’s a whole ‘nother thing to say Boxer and Murray go down.

kcra.com poll is not scientific; you can vote yourself at the above link for Boxer or Fiorina as the debate winner.

I was looking for the schedule for CSPAN to see if the debate is on at 6 AM and found a 57 minute video on the CSPAN site:

I am going to bookmark this and watch it over the weekend.

Boxer came out as disjointed, pleading and pathetic. She spoke as if she were speaking to stupid people who could not possibly understand the complexities of her role in Washington. Babs was short on facts and heavy on rhetoric. You could almost feel sorry for her if she had not been one of the reasons the country is in the dire straights it is in. Fiorina is fantastic. She is tough, prepared, smart and a imposing figure, all while maintaining her femininity. I am impressed.

The central valley water issue is going to resonate…big time. When Carley went there….it was over…IMO. She pulled the big knife out and used it by referring to how Feinstein even wanted the water to be turned back on. There was nothing the “Ma’am” could do.
Carly shined….just wish she had done this well for McCain.
