Open thread: Fiorina and Boxer debate
posted at 9:42 pm on September 1, 2010 by Allahpundit
10 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT. Via Gabe Malor, you can watch below or at C-SPAN. Remember, the race is basically a dead heat at this point and, according to lefty pollster PPP, the big red wave is such that California actually qualifies as a battleground state this year. So … yeah, this is kind of important.
To put you in the mood, here’s the latest from Charlie Cook, who was last seen predicting utter destruction for the Democrats this fall. His new prediction: Even more utter destruction.
Simply put, Democrats find themselves heading into a midterm election that looks as grisly as any the party has faced in decades. It isn’t hard to find Democratic pollsters who privately concede that the numbers they are looking at now are worse than what they saw in 1994.
The race-by-race outlook confirms the dire forecasts. Cook Political Report House Editor David Wasserman points out that at this point, 32 Democratic incumbents are running even or behind their Republican challengers in one or more public or private polls. At this point in 2006, when Republicans lost control of Congress, only 11 GOP incumbents were running even or behind…
In the Senate, while the odds still favor Democrats holding on to a narrow majority, it is not only mathematically possible for the GOP to capture a majority this year, but it has become plausible. The odds of Democrats capturing even one currently Republican-held seat appear to be getting longer. Meanwhile, Republicans are running ahead or roughly even in 11 Democratic-held seats, one more than necessary for control of the Senate to flip. It’s still a tall order but not crazy to say that Republicans will win the Senate.
While we wait, enjoy this clip at Newsbusters of Bill Press reassuring Ed Schultz that election night will be a morgue in Boehner’s office and a party in Pelosi’s. I think he’s kidding, but given the source, I’m not sure.

Gracious goodness, Carly’s eating her for lunch.
It’s quite delightful.

This wasn’t a debate….it was a prosecution….
FontanaConservative on September 1, 2010 at 10:54 PM
If Fiorina wins this election, she will be on the VP short list absolutely no doubt. Imagine if the GOP can carry california again….the equivalent of Illinois, NY and Vermont.
It locks up the electoral college.
Wish we could put her knowledge into Sarah’s body.
joepub on September 1, 2010 at 10:54 PM
boxer is history. she looks desperate. heck, she wouldn’t have bothered with a debate if she wasn’t backed to a wall. Carly looked confident, prepared, and ready to lead. Boxer looked like a scatter-brained, pot head.
jbh45 on September 1, 2010 at 10:54 PM
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I dont recall moderators asking about:
the Stimulus
ObamaCare
The Deficit
Taxes
El_Terrible on September 1, 2010 at 10:54 PM
All you Palipornians who put Senator Ma’am in office, come out and take your bow.
Honestly, I don’t know how many people are seeing this. Carly’s looking good. I think it’s mainly curmudgeons with bad backs who watch political debates on C-Span here in the Golden State, but I am really getting a sense that people are fed up with the status quo, and Senator Ma’am is a big, entrenched part of it.

Moderator: Okay, Senator you have five minutes.

I’m a Californian and I’m glad you all think she did well. We all know from experience though that what we see is not always how the “media” sees it. Remember Palin’s VP debate that the media overwhelmingly gave to Biden.
sandee on September 1, 2010 at 10:56 PM
I think one of them asked a question regarding the deficit but Boxer turned it around into bashing Bush.

I cannot get the debate but my fear is that unless Carly ran Boxer over with a Mack truck and flatten her, the media will tilt the debate as a win for Boxer.

Think of all the green jobs that will be created when CA bans plastic bags.

That had to be one of the worst debate panels ever.
Stupid, pointless questions.
The only good thing is it will make voters more curious about our little firebrand, Carly.

Carly won it.. but other than the farmer’s question, she just never seemed to knock the ball out of the park.. the farmer/death tax questions, she NAILED…

My dream comment Carly should’ve made:
If you (babs) are going to tax the sh*t out of corporations and corporations have a responsibility to their shareholders to turn a profit, then where do you think the jobs are going to go? To a union fart who wants $45/hr and can’t even screw in a lightbulb?
jbh45 on September 1, 2010 at 11:02 PM
I think Fiorina is really smart. Boxer I can’t be objective about, I can’t stand her and pray that Fiorina knowcks her out of it… Did the moderator ever call Boxer on anything except time?
Fiorina looked beautiful and Boxer looked gray…

i only watched some of this debate. i stopped after seeing the leftist panelists try to screw Fiorina.
the US has a monster problem with the press who are part of the professional left.
i think the only question that Boxer got was one about her insisting on being called Senator.
yeah, the reporters really wanted to dig deep…stupid leftists
r keller on September 1, 2010 at 11:05 PM
A part I remember well was about the question of Roe vs. Wade/stem cell research. Fiorina answered the question and then the moderator (pr1ck) called time. Then he says something like: I want to ask you this because I don’t think the crux of the panelist’s question was answered: would you vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade?”
What a tool.
carbon_footprint on September 1, 2010 at 11:05 PM
I don’t know, even the liberal human trash which inhabit CA are being crushed by the stupid policies of the demorats, both state and federal, and they know it. They won’t vote for Fiorina but they just might decide to stay home and not vote at all; at least that way their cocktail party cred will stay intact.
Bishop on September 1, 2010 at 11:05 PM
You know we are not all loony libs here in California. The majority of the Counties are Conservative. It’s the Coast that breeds these nuts. I think we actually have a chance this time to ax Boxer. I’m fairly sure Whitman will be Governor. There is hope for us yet.
sandee on September 1, 2010 at 11:06 PM
Because they are brown people who share American and conservative values and aren’t willing to be puppets of a political party.
That scares dhimmicrats to their core.
Timothy S. Carlson on September 1, 2010 at 11:06 PM
That last 4 min – 2 for each candidate pretty much summed it up.
Fiorina talked about how she would try to go forward with making the Federal government work for the people.
Boxer attacked Fiorina and never said what she would do if she does go back to Washington. I think the announcers realized how bitter and petty Boxer came accross in her closing remarks. Boxer just did not look like a ‘statesman’.
Freddy on September 1, 2010 at 11:06 PM
question…did boxer get any questions about California looking like a failed state
r keller on September 1, 2010 at 11:06 PM
What’s with Boxer’s breathy delivery? Why is she a Jeanie-One-Note? Has she developed any ideas beyond her Fiorina attacks?
The moderator reminded Fiorina not to go beyond the scope of the question several times. He also asked for clarifications from her more than once. He wanted a yes or no on a matter before the CA legislators, not an issue of national interest, even though Fioriana is running for a US Senate position.
The moderator never curbed Boxer once nor reminded her to stay on topic. Boxer never answered the question re Democrats’ control of Congress during George Bush’s presidency.
Fiorina was clearly the more well prepared on multiple topics. She had facts at her disposal. I am glad that she kept hitting home on the growth of the federal government and the absurdity of slipping in foolishness in the newest “jobs” bill.

In a sane world, after that debate, Fiorina’s poll numbers should jump about ten points.

Carly performed above my expectations. I saw her as soft on global warming, but I think she hit 2 questions out of the park. Jobs going overseas and the farmers question.
El_Terrible on September 1, 2010 at 11:09 PM
I don’t think Boxer was given any questions at all.
FontanaConservative on September 1, 2010 at 11:09 PM
I’m glad I no longer live in California. Boxer, Feinstein, Pelosi and a thousand other liberal fools have turned a once-great state into a cesspool.
And yet, Boxer will be re-elected. Every illegal in the state will vote for her, and that should be enough to do the trick. It’s a California Thing…you wouldn’t understand.
MrScribbler on September 1, 2010 at 11:10 PM
When do you get a chance to throw Waxman out of office?
There are certain places in Ca. that are indeed hopeless. Waxman’s area is one. What we can do is make sure he is part of the MINORITY party.
sandee on September 1, 2010 at 11:10 PM
No way. He even became visibly angry with Fiorina one time. It was all chuckles and respect for Boxer. The most biased debate I have ever seen.

California is a beautiful State. It’s politics stink. You have to remember it wasn’t always like this. This is the State that gave us Ronald Reagan. It can be great again.
sandee on September 1, 2010 at 11:13 PM
I have never seen Boxer debate before…because she could afford not to since she was never in this close a race.
Now I know why Boxer has almost always refused to debate! She is petty, snarky, snotty, and had to rely on some pretty tired, worn out talking points. Karly was poised, articulate, organized, well-versed on Boxer’s record…and landed a total knockout punch over the Central Valley water issue.
marybel on September 1, 2010 at 11:13 PM
I’m biased, but that was a slaughter. How dumb are the people that voted for her last time? Then again look how many voted for Obama.
One was, Boxer voted for every Clinton budget. I believe every one of his budgets got thrown in the trash by the Republican congress.
Secondly, how do you have a surplus and a debt at the same time?

Agreed. And the Roe v Wade reference was a set up to a different question. Something like “… we know what your position is on Roe v Wade, can you explain your position on embryonic stem cell research” Roe v Wade was hardly the crux of the question. Idiot moderator!

California gave us father/son liberals Pat and Jerry Brown sandwiched around Reagan’s two terms — and Earl Warren before Brown the elder. California is governed by f**kwits. Unfortunately, the voters were convinced by same to send them there so that said f**kwits could turn around and return “free” graft and lard to the Noble Electorate. The people get the kind of Gummint they therefore richly deserve. Nobody demanded accountability; nobody demanded political balance. All power was given to the Democrats.
Californians had their chance. They voted in these clowns. No one held a gun to their heads to vote for the likes of Jerry Brown, Babs, Feinstein and Gray Davis. Now their entire CALPERS system is going to bankrupt the state and Chicago Jesus will step in and force the Rest of Us to bail out California and California’s 54 Electoral Votes.
Trust me. Carly is a great person and would make a great Senator if I actually believed that Medi-California would actually wise up and vote for her. That’s like expecting the citizens of Hiroshima to put up a statue honoring Paul Tibbets.
It’s California, my native state. Pardon my cynicism regarding Carly’s electoral prospects, but with regard to the California electorate: stupid is as stupid does.

The panel was such a setup! All very liberal, all asking about social issues that she will not really have a say on.
