Gunman holding people hostage in Discovery Channel building; Update: Gunman in custody, hostages safe

posted at 2:40 pm on September 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

WUSA, a local station in D.C., threw a jolt through Twitter by claiming that the guy is a nutjob on an environmental crusade and that this is his manifesto/list of demands. Now they’re saying that that’s unconfirmed. Way to toss a political hot potato into a story that may be completely unrelated, guys.

Here’s what we know, sort of:

ABC affiliate WJLA in Washington, DC is reporting that the gunman is an Asian man and may be a former Discovery employee.

“A man entered the lobby and may have fired a weapon and declared, ‘Nobody is going anywhere,’” Montgomery County police told WJLA. Witnesses said they

Police are trying to establish contact with the suspect. A person inside the building tells The Associated Press the man had something strapped to his chest and has hostages.

It was, apparently, an Asian man who wrote the manifesto, and a cop on the scene says the suspect has “concerns” about the Discovery Channel, but that’s the closest thing to “confirmation” that anyone has that it’s the same guy. I actually don’t care if it is; I’m not going to blame the actions of a nut on all lefties and environmentalists. I will, however, be sure to remind them of this the next time they pull that on the right. Which they do, merrily, at every conceivable opportunity.

Stand by for updates.

Update: NBC says the gunman has been identified as James Lee. “Lee” is the name given at the end of the manifesto. The page appears to be down since it’s getting slammed with traffic, but here’s a taste. It’s basically a long rant about overpopulation and pollution and finding solutions to global warming, etc etc. One of the nuttier parts:

Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.

For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human’s lifespan! THIS IS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!

It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis. Even one child born in the US will use 30 to a thousand times more resources than a Third World child. It’s like a couple are having 30 babies even though it’s just one! If the US goes in this direction maybe other countries will too!

Also, war must be halted. Not because it’s morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures. FIND SOLUTIONS JUST LIKE THE BOOK SAYS! Humans are supposed to be inventive. INVENT, DAMN YOU!!

The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.

Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.

Update: TMZ says it’s the same guy and has a PDF version of more of his rantings about global warming, animal extinction, etc.

Update: Here’s Lee’s MySpace page, which apparently hasn’t been updated in a few years. Note the references to Daniel Quinn, who’s also mentioned at the beginning of the manifesto.

Update: Via MKH, some relevant message-board postings from Lee. He’s been working up to the point of going off for awhile, it seems:

Discovery is the enemy. They must be protested into saving the planet and reducing their propaganda. But if you feel that this is wrong, then don’t show up. You’re welcome to stay at home and watch TV or do whatever it is you do.

And if I look like an idiot, so what? But I won’t fail in this. This is going to happen and Discovery is going to change their course and start saving the planet. I will never personally feel like an idiot for trying.

Update: How nutty is he?

At the time of his conviction in March 2008, Lee was identified as a 40-year-old man from San Diego. Court records said he was arrested Feb. 21, 2008, on the sixth day of a protest at the Discovery building. Police were called when a crowd that had gathered began growing “unruly” as Lee threw thousands of dollars of cash into the air, some of it still in shrink-wrapped packages, police said at the time.

Update: Enjoy this tweet from lefty blogger Atrios because, like I say, the narrative shall be a-changin’ the next time some nut on the right does something nutty.

Update: Speaking of lefty bloggers, Think Progress blames Lee’s madness partly on rhetoric from … groups opposed to illegal immigration. Even liberal Adam Serwer of the American Prospect is embarrassed by their post.

Update: A bad day ends on a good note:

Suspect in Discovery Channel standoff shot and in custody; all three hostages are safe, police chief says.

That’s all CNN has right now, but keep trying that link. Updates should be coming momentarily.

Update: The shots were fatal. Lee is dead.

Update: Max Fisher of the Atlantic somehow read this post to mean that I think (a) Lee was a liberal and (b) because liberals relentlessly politicize “lone nut” incidents involving right-wingers, conservatives should do the same to them. (His tagline in summarizing this post at the Atlantic is “Hang This Attack Around Liberals’ Necks.”) On the first point, I don’t know if Lee was a down-the-line doctrinaire liberal or not; my point was simply that the green concerns that motivated him are typically identified with the left and therefore many people will conclude that he’s some species of liberal. By the same token, when someone bombs an abortion clinic, no one waits to find out the bomber’s opinion on, say, Iraq and federal spending before identifying him with the right. It’s the motive that defines the suspect politically in incidents like these. As for the second point — and I’m frankly amazed that anyone might have misunderstood it — what I’m saying is that liberals and environmentalists shouldn’t be blamed for this. Don’t politicize the incident by hanging the actions of a lunatic around their neck. What I meant up top about reminding them of this the next time they politicize something done by a right-wing nut was merely how this proves that there are crazies of all stripes and that I didn’t try to score a cheap political point against them today when the opportunity presented itself. Is this really that complicated?

The boss emeritus puts it more clearly than I can, apparently:

The gunman was reportedly motivated by Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth eco-propaganda. Guess what? I’m not playing that opportunistic blame game here. It’s not Al Gore’s fault when an enviro-nut goes off unhinged (and I’ve said that before). The blame in this case lies with the crazy man who terrorized the Discovery Channel employees. Period.

the reason liberals and environmentalists should be blamed for this is because this guy is the end result of their thinking. It is the thinking that produces gulags, and re-education camps, gas chambers, and killing fields. The thinking that makes abortion cheap and easy killing millions of humans.

yes this bomber is a product of liberalsism and environmentalism and I say that using logic and history as a guide as well as common sense and observed results of leftist policies.

This guy would be at home at any greenpeace meeting, any Peta meeting, any codepink meeting. He is one of them. Deny it if you can but for every Lee I can point to thousands of others that have simply not taken that final step down their logic path but they will/they must sooner or later. Many will do a Lee but many will throw themselves into programs who’s end result will kill thousands and millions of people.

How long before we see some leftist dim bulb blog something like,
“Lee may have been a nut, but he had a point…”?

I say this because a stray thought I had yesterday was eerily reministant to today’s events and it makes me realize the leftist loonary knows no bounds.

I forget what it was I was reading, but it was in regards to the EPA and I wondered too myself, “How long before the EPA declares humanity a Class I pollutant?” And then we get Mr. Lee here today…

I am afraid that, despite Mr. Lee obviously being mentally deranged, unimaginative and moronic leftists of one sort or another will decide that this is somehow a wake up call for environmental action.

“Mr. Lee may have been wrong in his methods, but he was right about the problem.”

http://michellemalkin.com/category/unhinged/

Of course you cannot paint an entire group because of the actions coming from a few…..but that does not negate the fact that there is an obvious pattern and acceptance of violence coming from the base of the democratic party.

A lot of these incidents were happening while the Secretary of Homeland Security was issuing a report warning of “Right Wing Violence”…….violence we have yet to see materialize.

We are also bombarded with daily insults and slander accusing Americans that disagree with Obama’s policies as “racist”…”right wing militants”…”nazis”…and now we are even compared to “Al-qaeda”.
….yet the left has not been able to verify or substantiate any of these baseless allegations beyond showing pictures of a sign picked out of a crowd of thousands.

Liberals have and are using violence and propaganda to push their agenda. They have revealed themselves as capable of hateful bigotry when confronting people they don’t agree with and endorsing the “any means necessary” when trying to shut down their political opponents.

James Lee is just one more in a long line of leftist that are perfectly fine with committing violent acts in the defense of their “peaceful” ideology.

“I have a difficult task tonight,” Gore said. “I want to call you to action but I have to begin by telling you what you know, in all candor – the United States government in its entirety, largely because of the opposition in the United States Senate to taking action on clean energy and a solution to the climate crisis, has failed us.”

Gore reiterated his disappointment in the U.S. government and encouraged his supports to “re-double” their efforts in the upcoming year.

“So I have to tell you in all candor and honesty, this battle has not been successful and it’s pretty much over for this year,” Gore said. “I hope I’m wrong about that, but I want to be realistic because we need to re-double our efforts for the battle that lies ahead.

Not saying Gore’s words drove this guy, just saying?

DSchoen on September 1, 2010 at 7:23 PM

Well, for example, when he spoke Lee was not dead. Fox did a great job covering this story all afternoon. They should have bumped the first half of Beck’s show to do some more live reporting.

What are you,a ghoul? Quit whining.

katy the mean old lady on September 1, 2010 at 7:23 PM

Not all violence is the result of insanity. Some is calculated for effect in a rational way, i.e. suicide bombings. In those cases, some goal is given a higher value than life. This is certainly not normal, but it’s also not necessarily insane. In cases where the killer’s (or would be killer’s) actions flow rationally from their beliefs, it should be fair to point out that ideas do have consequences.

This appears to be one of those cases.

Al Gore preyed on his fears and it cost him his life.

viking01 on September 1, 2010 at 7:12 PM

Al Gore probably had a carbon credit policy taken out on the guy last month.

Tav on September 1, 2010 at 7:35 PM

I want to hear what Tad Kaczynski has to say about this. Unabomber Ted had a copy of Al Gore’s “Earth in the Balance” book in his plywood nut hut out in the woods so he’s certainly qualified to count on whacko inspiration by Gorebull Warming.

Hollyweird can tack on a special mention / merit award for Gore at the next ceremony now that he’s now helped encourage not only the Unabomber but also a hostage taker.

Channel 6 news in Omaha reported that Lee was “someone who was unhappy with the programming.”

O.M.F.G.

We would never know the truth of anything if it was not for independent news sources like Hot Air or others like them.

rollthedice on September 1, 2010 at 7:58 PM

“and, of course, the Squirrels.”

Wait. . . wait. . . I have to call BS at this point. This is some bizarre reality show gone horribly, horribly wrong, right?

Just how long did the producers leave him off his meds?

Interesting that he did not seem to grasp that Malthus’s argument was not that food production leads to more humans, its that more humans will outrun out capacity to produce more food. Which is wrong, but becomes a really, really dumb argument when you argue it the way he does in his declaration.

Sharr on September 1, 2010 at 8:25 PM

Don’t politicize the incident by hanging the actions of a lunatic around their neck. What I meant up top about reminding them of this the next time they politicize something done by a right-wing nut was merely how this proves that there are crazies of all stripes and that I didn’t try to score a cheap political point against them today when the opportunity presented itself. Is this really that complicated?

No, but ‘they’ couldn’t care less. Yes, they will blame the right on any and every act of violence that ever occurs, regardless of whether it was a lefty, anarchist or libertarian…they’ll do everything they can to pin it on us. The pattern is so clear that claiming the high ground in this case is meaningless. There is no high ground on the left, except that which advances their agenda.

You are outsmarting yourself Allah and people who follow that path are the reason the left will win every time.

Sekhmet on September 1, 2010 at 8:27 PM

While we can’t blame Al Gore or the environmental movement for this nut’s crimes, what we can say is that in America, violent nuts, most of the time, come from the political left. Actually, almost exclusively. Leftists can’t win the arguments, so they become frustrated, as Lee was, and lash out.

Each of us fights the way we think is most effective. AP’s stance and MM’s is not mine, but it’s probably the better approach for those of us they represent in the way they have decided to represent us.

As for me, I have no constituency, no blog with a reputation to maintain, only my own rep to think about, so my bet is that whatever position Breitbart takes on this, I’ll take that one too.

The left has made this an Alinsky fight, and AB is the best Alinsky fighter I know.

In Alinsky fights, the high road is usually the loser. (Though nonetheless we need High Roaders to back us up, to come in after the shooting is over.) And I, for one, won’t balk at using their tactics against them.

petefrt on September 1, 2010 at 8:40 PM

I am seriously fighting guilt because I have been making fun of this obviously deranged man and now he’s dead. This is my confession… I’m hoping it will bring back my sense of hilarity over the Squirrels and the Froggies…

He actually looks a little like my adopted son. Poor man what a nightmare life he must of had inside that head.

Okay but Squirrels?!

Nah, Asian’s aren’t considered a minority minority. They might as well be white as far as the bean-counters are concerned.

holygoat on September 1, 2010 at 7:01 PM

:-) I was thinking the same thing, like for instance when the LSM talks about a ‘predominantly white crowd’ in describing Beck’s rally, do they count the Asians as white?…not that it matters…just curious what constitutes a minority-minority for LSM? other than the African Americans of course…

jimver on September 1, 2010 at 9:01 PM

I actually don’t care if it is; I’m not going to blame the actions of a nut on all lefties and environmentalists. I will, however, be sure to remind them of this the next time they pull that on the right. Which they do, merrily, at every conceivable opportunity.

Oh, they’ll find a way to blame Beck and Palin for this. Bank on it.
