Chris Matthews: How can people not like a president who’s “almost pluperfect”?

posted at 12:13 pm on September 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

I like that he says “almost pluperfect” instead of “almost perfect.” Perfection, it seems, isn’t a grand enough concept to encompass the splendor of The One. But, laying aside the suggestion that ideological disagreement somehow shouldn’t influence personal likability (wouldn’t Matthews like self-made-man Rush Limbaugh more if Rush were a liberal?), is Ace right that Tingles is condescending to Obama in veiled racial terms here? Wouldn’t be the first time, if so: Remember, this is the guy who once tried to “compliment” the president on a speech by saying it made him forget for an hour that Obama was black.

I’m not sure, though. When I first watched it, all I took Matthews to be saying is that, even by normal politician resume standards, The One has a lot of “American dream” boxes checked. The implicit contrast, I thought, was with Bush: Obama was born with no advantages, studied hard — unlike Dubya, who’s a moron!!1! — and didn’t apply his talents to anything so venal as getting rich in business. (“He gave himself to his community.”) The part about raising a family was, I thought, just part of the “American dream” litany. But Ace makes a good point. There’s no one on cable, Olbermann included, who spends as much time obsessing about racial attitudes towards Obama as Matthews does. Why give him the benefit of the doubt this time? Better question: Given the country’s level of dissatisfaction with Obama, why doesn’t it occur to Matthews that he’s missing something important in his analysis?

What are you implying? That they have a strange self-loathing obsession with race at mostly white MSNBC?

Mathews needs to get the whole thing off his chest and say what he really wants to say in plain terms, “It’s a black guy as president! Isn’t that so friggen awesome and shouldn’t people be high fiving me for me feeling good about a black guy president because I did so much to help black guys in general like every other guilt ridden white guy?!?”

I seriously think that this claptrack is shilling for Gibbs’ job. I mean, if Tony Snow (RIP) can do it coming from the ‘evil FOX empire’ to the White House, not by liking boots however, why can’t he?

Sponge on September 1, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Matthews reveals himself as a fool every time he does one of those lap dances for the Preznit. Either he is trying to be provocative by implying that it must be racism that accounts for the antipathy or he really cannot grasp that many of us dislike the man’s entire philosophy, politics and approach.

crushliberalism on September 1, 2010 at 12:27 PM

Mind you, pluperfect means past perfect – as in no longer.

OldEnglish on September 1, 2010 at 12:27 PM

The implicit contrast, I thought, was with Bush: Obama was born with no advantages, studied hard — unlike Dubya, who’s a moron!!1! — and didn’t apply his talents to anything so venal as getting rich in business. (“He gave himself to his community.”)

That encapsulates a key difference between libs and conservatives. Liberals think it benefits the community to give people handouts, while conservatives think it benefits the community to create jobs so people don’t need handouts.

LastRick on September 1, 2010 at 12:23 PM

Well no, pluperfect has nothing to do with perfection. It’s a grammatical term using an auxiliary verb and the past participle. It is used to state an action that took place in the past of the past.

I had believed American voters were rational, but then they elected a Marxist empty suit and I realized they were not.

or

I had thought Chris Matthews was sane, until I watched his show and realized he was a drooling race obsessed idiot.

According to my Websters ‘pluperfect’ is derived from a Latin phrase that means better than perfect. I don’t think the word means that in today’s context, now it’s grammatical, but I’m far from an expert on the subject. In any case and either way, Obama simply becomes more unlikeable everytime one of these super-person adjectives is applied to him. I think the ordinary citizen is turned off by these kinds of comparisons. I am(and it’s hard to be more ordinary than me)lol!!

SgtRed on September 1, 2010 at 1:23 PM

From what I understand, Harvard Law Review is subject to the vote of Professors, i.e. in a school obsessed with diversity, Obama likely got on it because he’s a minority.

There are no grades to prove otherwise.

Matthews surely knows about the non-existent transcripts.

It is very likely Obama was a poor student in his undergrad years, and benefited from affirmative action to get admission and advance to law school. He was also using drugs during this period, certainly a one way ticket to good grades.

It is very likely Obama was a poor student in his undergrad years, and benefited from minority preferences (Affirm Act is censored on Hot Air) to get admission and advance to law school. We’re sure Chris Tingle, who fancies himself a wordsmith, knows that pluperfect has more than one definition. Well. Maybe not. But in grammer it means “Of or being a verb tense used to express action completed before a specified or implied past time.”

How can people not like a president who’s “almost pluperfect”?

BitterClinger on September 1, 2010 at 1:38 PM

Obama was born with no advantages, studied hard — unlike Dubya, who’s a moron!!1! — and didn’t apply his talents to anything so venal as getting rich in business. (“He gave himself to his community.”)

Love that myth about Barry’s “selfless” devotion to community service. This guy dreamed of being president since the age of 5. Didn’t want to work at getting rich in business — nope, of course not — when getting rich in politics is so much easier! And Barry only “gave himself to his community” (organizing) for a couple of years in between college and law school. After law school he took a job at the white shoe firm of Sidley & Austin — hardly a “selfless” act in anyone’s book.

As for being born with no advantages, I assume you’re referring to inherited wealth. Because Barry certainly had advantages. Being able to check the “African-American” box on his college and law school applications gave him a significant advantage over similarly-situated white candidates. One doesn’t have to study quite so hard when one’s skin color provides a 300-400 point SAT advantage and “corrects” significantly for a less-than-stellar GPA.

AZCoyote on September 1, 2010 at 1:44 PM

What kills me is that Matthews favorably compares Obama to Jay Gatsby.

Fitzgerald’s Gatsby was a fraud. He tried to convince everyone around him that he was to the manor born, when in fact he was a thief, a counterfeiter, a criminal who freely associated with other criminals, who in fact was destined to die a sudden and violent death.

This is what Chris Matthews holds as the American ideal, and in fact compared the POTUS to.

I would say racist, but I think that it simply demonstrates Matthews’ poor understanding of both American literature, and the American ideal.
