Video: Carlson, Gibbs spar on surge, credit for Iraq success

posted at 3:57 pm on August 31, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

I played the last 90 seconds of this clip on my show today, but the whole video is well worth watching, if just to see how Greg Hengler reminds us of what Barack Obama said from the cheap seats in 2007. As I also wrote earlier today, Obama deserves credit for his belated support of the surge, made evident of it in his repeat in Afghanistan and putting the man who mastered it in Iraq in charge of it now. Carlson wonders whether Obama will be gracious enough to admit publicly how incorrect he was in 2007, and give credit to the man who got it right:

Obama will call George W. Bush today? I hadn’t heard that part of the clip while doing the show this morning. How will that conversation go, anyway? “Thanks, Mr. President, for leaving me a turnkey policy for Iraq that I managed not to screw up, and I’ll be sure to talk nice about you after the election is over.”

Update: JadeNYU in the comments pictures the conversation on the other end of the phone when Obama calls Crawford:

“Sir, we have the President on the phone for you.”

“Hello, Dad?”

Yes, Iraq is really going to work out well. Their children are their future.

Religious intolerance part of lesson plan in Iraqi schools

Some students appear to be learning the lessons well.

Sajjad Kiayyad, 7, of Baghdad, said he plans to become a holy warrior when he grows up. “I will fight the Americans because they are Jewish and unbelievers,” he said. “I will be victorious, or I will be a martyr in heaven.”

Maryam Ali, 9, also of Baghdad, said she is carrying out her own jihad by calling on “unveiled female friends to cover their heads.”

I didn’t know he could count to five. Now if he could only learn to answer a straight question with a straight answer.

made evident of it in his repeat in Afghanistan and putting the man [Petraues] who mastered it in Iraq in charge of it now.

No Fire Support; No Glasses; More ‘Chai’; No Warrior Friendly Change!

For those who held out hope that the ROE was going or undergo a ‘positive transformation’ under General Petraeus, you will be disappointed. This is the point where I am suppose to say; ‘I told you so’.

“Going several steps better, General Petraeus has reportedly expanded the ban on air strikes and artillery fire to all types of buildings, tree-lined areas and hillsides where it is difficult to distinguish who is on the ground.” The fact is, not only has he deemed the ROE as proper, he has deemed it not tight enough.

He has even determined that the wearing of Oakley, polycarbonate safety glasses by our American Warriors to be detrimental to the apparent security of the Afghan population. He has directed that all, ‘in-country’, make great efforts to meet and greet the locals, without the glasses. For those of you who don’t know, those glasses use ballistic lenses that protect against the micro-sand famous in desert terrain, shrapnel, flying debris and, oh yeah; intense sunlight.

Like a boss of mine used to say, “his non answer is his answer”. So Zero won’t be giving President Bush credit tonight unless, this clip having gone viral forces them to change the speech and do so…

Gibbs is so unprofessional… Pathetic.

Wow. I do not think I’ve ever seen an interview of somebody who works for the President of the United States who tried to turn the tables and ask the interviewer what their position on a given topic while refusing to answer the question. Her response was perfect. Gibbs is a joke.

Here is perhaps the most insidious thing about all this “Iraq is a success!” and it is something that most do not even seem to realize.

Islam, an aggressive Totalitarian System, with a religious component, is a growing threat to Western Civilization. It is a more totalitarian system than even Nazism was and has it’s eyes on ruling the whole world – Shariah – just read the Koran, Hadith, Surah. The fact that so many in America are still largely blind to this, in spite of overwhelming evidence, certainly does not help the situation and may end up proving fatal.

Why are so many Americans still largely blind to Islam? How can so many Americans be so blind and for so long? There are a number of reasons for this and one of the main ones, probably the main one, is the contention by many that Muslims, except for some “extremists”, want freedom and liberty – just like us – and that most Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan are our allies, friends, compatriots and will even be our pen pals and facebook buddies. If people believe this, that most Muslims are really our allies for freedom and liberty, well obviously, they are not going to see Islam as much of a threat. If I believed this, I wouldn’t. Why would they?

So this White House apparently thinks that the personal opinion of one reporter is at least as important to the citizenry (if not more so) than the position of the WH itself?

Gibbs seems to have a problem with strong women.

Sailfish on August 31, 2010 at 6:16 PM

Gretchen rocks. She made Gibbs look like a dolt, not that he needs much help. Without directly answering the question, Gibbs answered it with his evasion of the question. I hope that Obama is gracious enough to acknowledge Dubya’s commitment to the surge and victory in Iraq, I’m pretty sure that our thin skinned narcissist in chief won’t admit his wrong headed vote against the surge.

This might be a tough night on my liver. I’m going to take a shot of scotch every time Obama says “I” or “me”.

Anyone else going to make the TOTUS speech a drinking game?

simkeith on August 31, 2010 at 6:20 PM

For conspiracy theorists –

Michele, my belle:

When she (Michele Bachmann) was a teenager in Anoka, Minn., she was a nanny for a young girl named Gretchen Carlson. Today, Carlson, a Stanford honors graduate who studied at Oxford, is a host of “Fox & Friends,” the morning show on — wouldn’t you know — Fox News Channel. See how far ahead the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy plans?

This interview makes up for Gretchen’s ignorant question on Fox and Friends to Sharron Angle: “What’s it like (or words to that effect), since you are new to politics?”

Angle: “Actually, I served 4 terms in the Nevada State Assembly.”

fred5678 on August 31, 2010 at 6:22 PM

MEOW GRETCHEN!!!! Seems like her claws were out and ready and STRUCK! Wow…that was good. Gretchen was breathing like she just ate a really hot jalapeno and was waitin for some water. Gibbsy is such a girlie-man wannabe just like his boss.

Well, until these nations abandon the barbaric political ideology cloaked as a religion known as islam, they’ll ALWAYS have these problems. Where Christianity and Judaism say to embrace the non-believer and do your best to spread the good message to them, islam tells its followers to despise non-muslims, punish them, force them to convert by violent force, and if they refuse to convert, tax them to death and treat them as pariahs, or kill them.

It’s a twisted ideology that has produced exactly nothing of value in its long history.

I’d love to see most Iraqis get a clue and drop the shackles of this deadly ideology, but islam tends to make people backward and ignorant…it’s part of the way mohammed envisioned controlling people, by making it nearly impossible for societies that bought into his insanity to break free from its grips.

TheBlueSite on August 31, 2010 at 6:47 PM

You noticed how defensive and immature he sounded. Gibbs not wanting to look back at what Obama has done and voted on as senator, yet they love to mention What Bush has done.

jaboba on August 31, 2010 at 6:49 PM

Well Gibbs and his boss are obviously of the opinion that they don’t owe us plebes an answer or an explanation for anything they say or do.

I would like to see someone put that to them, and watch them panic.

In all seriousness. Have we ever had a worse WH press secretary than this? It’s a sincere question, can anyone think of any other contenders?

Then he might have half a shot at not going down in history as having led the most destructive and damaging administration in US history.

Look, if you hate them so much, Tav, why don’t you go and kill them? You know, see your truth through to the end? Maybe you could rig yourself with explosives. Maybe – maybe – you could get a few like minded believers toegether and plan a spectatacular mass casualty attack. Wouldn’t have to be militarily effective neccesarily – just send the meesage, “we know who you are and we hate you! We will stop at nothing to kill you!” Maybe you could do it sometime in the fall, after everyone’s summer break is over. Maybe sometime in September. Like the second week.

Cylor on September 1, 2010 at 7:30 AM

Gibbs was snarky, inconsistent and obtuse. This man is the master at the argument style of the left, misdirect attention from the point being discussed by casting aspersions on the method of questioning: he wasted the time he could have spent answering a question by belittling Carlson for asking a question more than once. In great leftist style, Gibbs began counting the number of times the question was asked but not counting how many times he avoided answering it. And always, as Alinsky advised, keep laughing, humor is a great way to appear correct.
