Uh oh: Murkowski gains on Miller in early counting of absentee ballots; Update: Murkowski overperforming?

posted at 4:35 pm on August 31, 2010 by Allahpundit

Not that big a deal — I think.

Murkowski picked up 343 votes in early returns Tuesday. Tea Party Express favorite Miller had 48,051 votes to Murkowski’s 46,726. Miller had maintained a lead of 1,668 votes heading into Tuesday’s count, which narrowed to 1,325.

The Elections Division listed 25,510 absentee, questioned or early ballots as of Monday. Counting started Tuesday morning in Anchorage and Wasilla and was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Fairbanks and Juneau.

Why isn’t it a big deal that she just cut his lead by roughly 20 percent? Because Anchorage is a Murkowski district. The big Miller districts have yet to be counted. Hotline:

[Projections show that] Murkowski would net more votes, about 114, in and around Anchorage, where her base is strong. She won 12 of 15 legislative districts wholly or partly contained within the city, some with as much as 60%.

But not only are those small amounts insufficient to help Murkowski pull out a win, they’re also dwarfed by the absentee ballot crop Miller is likely to reap in the Mat-Su Valley, where ex-AK Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R) political base lives.

Miller won the area by wide margins, and if ballots break today like they did last week, he would net an additional 489 votes over Murkowski. Murkowski lost all 4 legislative districts in the Mat-Su Valley by more than 20 points, giving Miller a chance to virtually lock up the election by increasing his lead.

If she’s picked up 343 votes from Anchorage when Hotline expected her to net just 114, she has cause for some hope — especially since, per ABC, she’s now won the absentee battle in three districts that she lost on election night. This was the big fear all along, that Miller surged so late in the race that absentee ballots sent in early would break heavily for Murkowski across the state. In which case, maybe this is a big deal after all.

Looks like another long night at the ol’ bloggy homestead. Stand by for updates as more returns come in. (Or follow along with rolling updates at the Anchorage Daily News.) While we wait, here’s Megyn Kelly desperately trying to start another food fight between Murkowski and Miller, with Miller wisely resisting taking the bait. Remember, party unity will be key to preserving Miller’s natural advantage in the general election; the more corrosive things get between him and Murky, the better the Democrats’ chances at an upset are. Increase the peace.

Update: Just as I published the post, the ADN updated with new numbers. The ballots from Miller’s stronghold in the Mat-Su Valley are now in and he’s increased his lead a bit — but not by as much as Hotline projected. On election day, he crushed Murkowski 62/38 in those districts. On the absentees and questioned ballots, he won … 52/48. He’s added a net 135 votes to lead by 1,460 now but it looks like Murkowski’s going to keep chipping away. More updates coming…

Update from Anchorage Daily News:

Update, 12:20 p.m.:

Joe Miller’s lead over Lisa Murkowski just grew slighly with absentee and questioned ballots from the Mat-Su.

Miller now leads Mukowski by 1,460 votes.

The Division of Elections reported counting 2,895 votes from Legislative Districts 13 through 16 in the Mat-Su.

For Lisa to pull it off the trend to her has to be consistent. In other words if she decreases the lead in one batch of results, then Miller increases it in another, in sporting terms she she is going to run out of time.

Murkowski should be toast. The early counting of absentee ballots where from her strongest districts. I don’t see her performing this well in any other districts.

Murky would have to find operatives willing to claim they found “lost” ballots in the trunk of their car, in a warehouse, or in their refrigerator. That’s no problem for a Democrat, but for Murky maybe no so easy.

With all of today’s ballots, Murkowski is now out-performing her Election Day numbers in all districts that have been counted today by 5.9%. If that were to continue in all districts across the state, she would need a total of 16,690 new ballots to be counted to pass Miller.

I don’t think there are 16,000 ballots left to count, are there?

Uh, that’s not quite true. I suspect Joe is prepared for the absentees and write-ins because Sarah Palin would have been prepared for the absentees and write-ins.

I am assuming, and have been for some time, that Palin’s people are secretly running his campaign. The dead giveaway? Joe’s interview last night with Greta, which was conducted from Sarah’s Studio.

I will bet you dimes, dollars, to doughnuts that MIller came to Sarah months ago with the idea for taking out Lisa, and Sarah decided to help him plan it out.

Lessons for Conservative Candidates and their Volunteers:

Gather as many absentee votes as possible as early as possible! That means getting your mailings out early and calling absentee voters as soon as the ballots are mailed and getting your volunteers organized NOW.

Some counties may also allow any voters to vote early at City Hall.

Please don’t make us go through this type of suspense in November!

Absentee ballots will be mailed in California beginning on October 4, which is only 34 days from today.

http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/2010-elections/november-2-2010-key-dates.htm

Also make sure all of your supporters are registered to vote. Pay particular atttention to people who:
- have moved recently
- just turned 18
- just become American citizens

The last day to register to vote in California is October 18.

We are in the home stretch for the General election NOW.

Make sure all of your friends and relatives are ready to vote properly!

I’m glad Joe is raising hell. He’s exposed Daddy’s Girl for exactly what she is. Also put so much heat on the NRSC that they went away. Even Haley Barbour jumped in and told them to get out.

This is a good thing. It’s the kind of fight we need in every district, really.

Alaska is more then likely going to stay red, whether it be Murkowski or Miller. Alaskans are so ticked off at Begich right now, any one who is of a shade of blue isn’t going anywhere up here.

upinak on August 31, 2010 at 5:50 PM

No he can’t run as an independent. The filing date is passed. Libertarian is all he would have and I would advise against it. He will probably pull this out but if he doesn’t, he can run against the Dem. Senator. in 2014.

sandee on August 31, 2010 at 5:52 PM

Speculation is useless, all you can really do at this point is wait and see what happens.

Terrye on August 31, 2010 at 5:53 PM

So far, Murkowski netted 208 votes out of nearly 5,200 absentee ballots counted, or about a 4% margin. With 20,000 left, that would pro-rate to about 800 net votes. The ADN blog is saying that Wasilla (Sarah Palin’s hometown) still isn’t counted, which would probably break big for Miller.

Whoever wins this, hope they can unify behind the winner after all the votes are counted. Alaska can’t afford 2 Democrat Senators!

Voting for liberal democrats who call themselves Republicans is how we got in this mess in the first place.

Castle is a 100% democrat vote. Rumors swirling around say he’s already made a deal to switch parties if he wins.

This is a special election, so the winner will be part of the “lame duck” session. We need Christine in that chair to stop Obama.

Now is not the time to be timid. Now is the time to clean house and get all these relics and dynasties out the door. We may never have this good of an opportunity again.

Getting Castle out of there, Daddy’s Girl, and a few more, and it might just put the fear of God in the rest of the RINOs, and make them get right.

No link, statement from a campaign worker. I’m told this is highly suspect.

“The count is to include 496 ballots from the Laurel/Dowling area of South Anchorage that weren’t counted on Election Day. Elections workers had uploaded a touch-screen memory card that made it look like the results had been reported… but didn’t upload the card used to count the …ballots, according to the Division of Elections.”

If she wins, this would have to put the fear of God,aka the voters, in her. She doesn’t tow the line, and hell is to be paid. Well I can dream can’t I?…..

PS, I still think Miller will win.

She may make a statement but I can’t see that she will do anymore than that since all she did was endorse Miller..:)

Dire Straits on August 31, 2010 at 6:42 PM

Upi…No I can’t but maybe someday… But your response does confirm my suspicions…

CCRWM on August 31, 2010 at 6:39 PM

Go ahead and say CC. You aren’t going to hurt my feelings.

Maybe Miller will win, but she already had the rather of voters put into her about a year ago. Which others in here don’t know about either.

And I never expected you all to know.

What?

the_nile on August 31, 2010 at 6:49 PM

Upi… Just that Sarah somehow has lost favor with you which I think is unfortunate… That’s all…

CCRWM on August 31, 2010 at 6:49 PM

What?

the_nile on August 31, 2010 at 6:49 PM

opps wrath of voters. There were a bunch of us call her and told her to STOP voting with the Dems. About a year ago… and what passed about a year ago?

How can some of you be giving out such wrong information — the election board found the Miller camp allegations to be mostly unfounded as the Murkowski guy was not on the state computer system.

Have you all not read where all ballots are checked against the names of the ones that sent out plus the ballots have to be notarized.

The reason that she is doing better with absentee is that people voted before the Joe Miller surge which happened after Murkowski ran a dumb ad that the person the ad was about endorsed Miller. Her numbers tanked after that, but some people had already voted.

Anchorage is a huge area for her if you look at the map of where she won and don’t see see how with most of the ballots in from that area she could win but if she does, it won’t be because of ballot fraud — there are no manufactured ballots. There are too many checks and balances in AK. Allegations of fraud should never have happened but when you have lawyers involved they want to stir things up.

Personally I think both sides need to sit down and shut up and let the count go on which seems to be going on for some time in Alaska. Thought it would be over today but it is not. What an odd state.

If the two sides don’t quit the sniping, they could hand the seat to the Dem. They need to grow up!

Big Government is reporting that Murkowski is planning to concede. Kinda surprising, but I’ll take it seriously because it’s Breibart.

Shotgun Messiah on August 31, 2010 at 7:16 PM

Well, I hope you are not referring to HCR, which passed about six months ago.

Please accept nothing from one of Andrew’s sites right now. Reasoning is as follows.

Breitbart’s sites are very, very Sarah-friendly. As much as I like Palin and am rooting for Miller to win to cover Sarah’s back in the state, I wouldn’t trust Andrew Breitbart’s biases at this point.

Let’s just let this play out.

victor82 on August 31, 2010 at 7:18 PM

Yes, Big Government has called the election for Miller.

Interesting since they haven’t counted half of the ballots yet.

upinak on August 31, 2010 at 7:25 PM

Joe Miller will be on Mark Levin’s program in about 10 minutes or so.

Also Murkowski may be ready to concede.

Per a rumor Techno. Nothing I have listened to Alaska News wise has said anything about this.

upinak on August 31, 2010 at 7:25 PM

What’s happening is that a lot of those ballots are for the democratic primary which nobobdy mentions when the refer to the 15,000 ballots. The latest update from ADN has a sector of 1,300 ballots of which only 700 of them were for the republican primary with Markowski picking just a handful of votes.

What did Lisa’s guy “Mike” do during those 20 minutes accessing the system?

Christien on August 31, 2010 at 4:44 PM

`
`
He didn’t. It was just more paranoid crap from the nuts.
