Sebelius: Who’s up for some “reeducation”?

posted at 8:45 am on August 31, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Sometimes, this administration seems so out of touch with the language of its nation that it borders on parody.  Usually, that’s an introduction to a Joe Biden anecdote, but this time the quote comes from Kathleen Sebelius, straight out of the nation’s heartland by geography but more out of the Ivory Tower in practice.  Yesterday, when addressing the strong opposition to ObamaCare throughout the nation, Sebelius chalked it up to ignorance and misinformation — and suggested a remedy that sounds as if it came out of Orwell, emphasis mine:

“Unfortunately, there still is a great deal of confusion about what is in [the reform law] and what isn’t,” Sebelius told ABC News Radio in an interview Monday.

With several vulnerable House Democrats touting their votes against the bill, and Republicans running on repeal, Sebelius said “misinformation given on a 24/7 basis” has led to the enduring opposition nearly six months after the lengthy debate ended in Congress.

So, we have a lot of reeducation to do,” Sebelius said.

The administration is particularly concerned about the views of senior citizens – who “have been a target of a lot of the misinformation,” according to the health secretary.

“Re-education” has been a favorite effort by tyrannies over the past century or so, mainly (but not exclusively) communist.  The most notorious programs came in China, Cambodia, and Vietnam, the latter of which produced the mass exodus of “boat people” to the US and other countries.  “Re-education” has come to mean either brainwashing or intimidation of political dissidents.

In fact, it’s such a notorious term that no one in American politics would be foolish enough to use it, or at least so we thought.  Clearly, Sebelius isn’t talking about setting up re-education camps in the Midwest, but it’s about as foolish a term to use as can be imagined in talking about the deep unpopularity of a government program that arguably sets the stage for government control of the health-care sector.

Americans don’t need “reeducation” efforts, and Democrats had just as much time to explain the benefits of ObamaCare as did critics to explain their opposition to it.  The reason people don’t like it, and 60% of voters want it repealed, is because it’s a terrible bill that is killing business investment and expansion, as well as grasping unprecedented and unconstitutional power from Americans.

And as for seniors getting misinformation, well, perhaps Secretary Sebelius might want to start her “reeducation” efforts within HHS.  Seems as though some of the misinformation has been coming from her own staff.

Update: I had already written the post and the headlines for it when Glenn Reynolds showed that great minds think alike.

Update II: Looks like reeducation will be a tall order, and getting taller:

A new poll shows that public support for health care reform dropped sharply in August – a dagger in Democrats’ hopes that their landmark legislation will help them in November’s midterm.

The Kaiser Health Tracking Poll has support for the bill dropping seven percentage points in August – down to 43 percent – while opposition rose 10 points to 45 percent. That’s the weakest showing since May – and a far cry from the bump proponents had hoped to see as some of the law’s more consumer-friendly provisions kick in.

Democrats said throughout the year-long debate on Capitol Hill that support for the overhaul would increase once the bill passed and Americans were able to take advantage of some of its benefits. But it appears voters’ opinions of the legislation were set more firmly than anyone thought during the bruising political fight.

Better get moving with that brainwashing truth-telling, Secretary Sebelius!

Update III: Think Sebelius will put this on the reeducation curriculum?  Naaaaah. (via Guy Benson’s Twitter feed)

“the secretary shall…”

The bill give the HHS secretary the power to dictate most terms of this monstrosity. If forcing people to buy a product is part of the deal, I don’t see why “re-education” wouldn’t be part of it too. The Commerce Clause gives the federal government the right to delegate dictatorial power to a cabinet member ya know.

Oh come on, Ed, we mouth breathers just haven’t caught up with the brilliant narrative. Lackoff (rhymes with…) is going to have to “reeducate” Sebelius to a better poll-tested word choice.

Unlike too many in the O administration and its enabling legislators, the American public have read the bill, and the horrific comprehensiveness of this atrocity is not beyond the public’s comprehension.

Had they told the truth about the health care bill, I would even be for it. But what they said was impossible.

1. Lower costs for everyone
2. Everyone gets better coverage
3. No one will lose their current coverage
4. will reduce the deficit
5. No one will ever be denied coverage due to rationing
6. All negotiations will be done in public i.e. CSPAN

And I am sure there is a lot more that I am not remembering off the top of my head….

Obama plans to use the nonprofit group Public Allies, which he and his wife have shepherded, as the model for an Orwellian national-service corps, which he calls “Universal Voluntary Public Service.” Read the program details, which lead one to agree with Investor’s Business Daily that:

the Obamas . . . plan to herd American youth [ages 18-30] into government-funded reeducation camps where they’ll be brainwashed into thinking America is a racist, oppressive place in need of “social change.”

So stop it.

E T Cartman on August 31, 2010 at 9:03 AM

Big Brother had nothing on the Obamas. They plan to herd American youth into government-funded reeducation camps where they’ll be brainwashed into thinking America is a racist, oppressive place in need of “social change.”

The pitch Public Allies makes on its Web site doesn’t seem all that radical. It promises to place young adults (18-30) in paid one-year “community leadership” positions with nonprofit or government agencies. They’ll also be required to attend weekly training workshops and three retreats.

In exchange, they’ll get a monthly stipend of up to $1,800, plus paid health and child care. They also get a post-service education award of $4,725 that can be used to pay off past student loans or fund future education.

But its real mission is to radicalize American youth and use them to bring about “social change” through threats, pressure, tension and confrontation — the tactics used by the father of community organizing, Saul “The Red” Alinsky.

The government now funds about half of Public Allies’ expenses through Clinton’s AmeriCorps. Obama wants to fully fund it and expand it into a national program that some see costing $500 billion. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the military, he said.

The gall of it: The Obamas want to create a boot camp for radicals who hate the military — and stick American taxpayers with the bill.

We do not destroy the heretic because he resists us; so long as he resists us we never destroy him. We convert him, we capture his inner mind, we reshape him. We burn all evil and all illusion out of him; we bring him over to our side, not in appearance, but genuinely, heart and soul. We make him one of ourselves before we kill him. It is intolerable to us that an erroneous thought should exist anywhere in the world, however secret and powerless it may be. The biggest reason these schlubs are losing is because they all act like a bunch of elementary school teachers talking to third graders.

And of course – when your goal is to take care of every American as if they were a child – then I suppose that’s understandable.

But the fact is – the “wiring” of Americans is different … and it’s different on a genetic level. They forget that the people who founded this nation came here to get away from government – they didn’t trust big government.

And they were also predisposed toward self-sufficiency and willing to endure hardship for a chance to get ahead. In short – the founding Americans were EXTREME individualists.

Sorry libbies – you’ll have to wait more than 200 years for that genetic trait to be bred out of us.

And you’ll be long dead by then.

It’s come to mean it in certain quarters. In other quarters, where at the very least they saw places like China, Cambodia and Vietnam as being no big deal or the victim of U.S. policy, the term “re-education” just doesn’t conjure up the same sort of alarm bells. That’s why it could slip from Sebelius’ tongue so thoughtlessly.

human experimentation was a series of medical experiments on large numbers of prisoners by the German Nazi regime in its concentration camps during World War II. Prisoners were coerced into participating: they did not willingly volunteer and there was never informed consent. Typically, the experiments resulted in death, disfigurement or permanent disability. At Auschwitz and other camps, under the direction of Dr. Eduard Wirths, selected inmates were subjected to various hazardous experiments which were supposedly designed to help German military personnel in combat situations, develop new weapons, aid in the recovery of military personnel that had been injured, and to advance the racial ideology backed by the Third Reich.[1] Dr. Aribert Heim conducted similar medical experiments at Mauthausen. Carl Vaernet is known to have conducted experiments on homosexual prisoners in attempts to cure homosexuality. After the war, these crimes were tried at what became known as the Doctors’ Trial, and revulsion at the abuses perpetrated led to the development of the Nuremberg Code of medical ethics.

These two little boys decided to chime in, Olbermann naming me “Worst Person in the World” for a third time, while Weigel had the delusional gall to declare me, well, crazy.

Message to all liberals, name calling and petulant simpleton gimmicks dare not distract me from my mission; destroying the liberal progressive socialist machine and its legislative agenda……Klein is just a stepping stone to that end.

You will find that this Conservative will parry your weak punches and deliver knockout blows. I invite all of you into the arena where this intellectual Warrior awaits you on the field of combat for principles of governance and ideals.

My fellow South Floridians and Americans, the liberals have called me an extremist – Yes, I am extremely devoted to this Constitutional Republic and to protecting your Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of happiness. They have called me a radical – in 1776 I am quite sure George III and the British called our Founding Fathers the same…..today we call them Patriots. They have said I am a dangerous choice – absolutely, I am dangerous to President Barack Hussein Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and her Mama’s boy Ron Klein….and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, do not try to hide little Ronnie behind your skirt, your association with his defeat would not bode well for your desired future as Pelosi’s heir

Folks, I just have to tell you, this is going to be fun because there are lots of liberals heading to the woodshed!

It’s interesting how liberals often inadvertantly show how far left they really are.

Reeducation and reeducation camps are hallmarks of communist regimes designed to purify one’s thinking. We saw them in China during Mao’s Cultural Revolution and in Vietnam after the South fell. They were horribly repressive.

Most of the other polls, with more representative samples, have been showing opposition to ObamaCare at 55-60% for many months now.

Associated questions in Q8 section seem quite contrary to that. I don’t see any weighting of this disparity. Ed, would have a better handle on all this.

“But we assure the socialists that we repudiate only forced organization, not natural organization. We repudiate the forms of association that are forced upon us, not free association. We repudiate forced fraternity, not true fraternity. We repudiate the artificial unity that does nothing more than deprive persons of individual responsibility. We do not repudiate the natural unity of mankind under Providence.” -Frederic Bastiat

First reeducate yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!

lilium on August 31, 2010 at 10:53 AM

“Re-education” has been a favorite effort by tyrannies over the past century or so, mainly (but not exclusively) communist.

Communist, Socialist, Fascist, Liberal… The names they use are interchangeable. All totalitarian governments are collectivist. Always.

Wow Camp!..Who has the cigarettes?..:)

Everyone needs to remember to write your name on your underwear!..:)

I wonder if Kathleen Sebelius realizes how many people see her as an unaccountable tyrant? She may actually think her wisdom allows her to make the best decisions for others.

This is clearly FOREIGN to the people of the US. No combination of ‘re-education’ programs can change the DEMAND for FREEDOM.

FBI talking to Obama’s mentor Weather Underground

I asked ‘Well what is going to happen to those people that we can’t reeducate – that are die hard capitalist?’ And the reply was that they’d have to be eliminated. And when I pursued this further they estimated they would have to eliminate 25 million people in these reeducation centers. And when I say eliminate I mean kill . . . 25 million people.”

I hope you guys learn fast.

The good news is that there will not be another Democrat liberal elected POTUS in my lifetime. If there is, it will be the result of anmesty, and the country will be cooked by then anyway.

Say goodbye to grandma, she’s being relocated to the ice flow happy-fun senior centre Monday morning…

Re-education.

As if you didn’t figure what the Dept.of Education with DHS do, because they can.

What? Every other poll I have read has opposition to Obamacare over 60%. Why is this poll so different? Am I missing something?

Monkeytoe on August 31, 2010 at 8:54 AM
Heard this morning on MSNBC of all places – the Kaiser poll has always been the ObamaCare’s biggest shill cheerleader and used by the Administration to push it every time.

Marcus on August 31, 2010 at 9:20 AM

Also, rememeber Kaiser is why our HC is such a mess in the first place. Look up Kaisergate under Nixon. The HMO Act of 1973 was all about giving less care and charging more. That is what the new bill is about as well. We don’t have a HC problem we have a health INSURANCE problem all started by Nixon, Kaiser and Ted Kennedy!

xler8bmw on August 31, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Sebelius isn’t talking about setting up re-education camps in the Midwest,

If not the MidWest, then where??????

Poor old Midwest never gets the big government programs to boost their economies.

Ohh, I know where they will go. FEMA camps in the Southwest. I have a buddy in construction that recently completed a huge project at Fort Wingate Army Depot, behind lots of fences and concertina wire.
