Bold new liberal strategy on ObamaCare: Talk about anything except ObamaCare
posted at 12:13 pm on August 31, 2010 by Allahpundit
Via Peter Suderman at Reason, maybe what Sebelius meant by “re-education” is re-educating people to forget that they ever passed it?
Bear in mind below that “HCAN” stands for “Health Care for America Now.” They’re not a generic lefty coalition, in other words; they’re dedicated to a specific issue. And yet … that’s the one issue they suddenly don’t want to talk about.
Now, HCAN’s field crews are finding that the best way to support reform-friendly lawmakers is to talk about something else: jobs, the economy or other issues likely to resonate more with voters.
“We want to be flexible in talking about what is most relevant to constituents, whatever issues are most motivational,” said HCAN’s national field director, Margarida Jorge, who organizes a daily call with their partner organizations. “We can have a high level of focus on health care but also understand at times the focus is going to shift.”
HCAN activists say they are not dodging their key issue; rather, they want to keep pace with voter concerns, which have markedly shifted over the past year.
But what HCAN describes as a tactical shift, reform opponents see as proof that the law is unpopular, a loser for Democrats in a tough election cycle. “Voters don’t like health reform and they know that,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former CBO director who now works with the American Action Forum on their Operation Healthcare Choice project. “Independents are key to control; health reform is unpopular but jobs and economy could move votes. When it comes to substance, on health reform, they’re in bad shape.”
Riddle me this. According to every liberal pundit in the universe, the impending Democratic catastrophe in November is due to the economy, the economy, and nothing but the economy. In which case, why on earth would HCAN suddenly want to to start talking about … the economy? Surely distracting voters from the economy by emphasizing the glorious improvements that are on the way for American health care is a better strategy for motivating the lefty base than dwelling on the looming double-dip recession over which The One has presided. Or is ObamaCare now so toxic among the electorate that having Democrats pay lip service to jobs is actually marginally better for them? We got an inkling of the answer two weeks ago, but I guess we know for sure now.
The guy to read on this subject today (as usual) is Jay Cost at RCP, who’s been tracking the generic ballot trends over the past year and found something curious. If the Democratic downturn is all about the economy, the economy, and the economy, why did the GOP start to surge (especially among indies) late last year — when the economy temporarily started growing again? I’ve asked this before but I’ll ask it again: Given the unprecedented Democratic horror show lately in generic ballot polling, does anyone seriously believe they’d somehow be even worse off if they had dropped O-Care last winter and focused on jobs?

Throwing Democrat politicians bodily out of office and subsequently in the clink.
That motivates the hell out of me.
How ’bout you, fellow ‘mericans?

The plan after Obamacare passed was to talk it up in the fall and tell people how great it was going to be.
Guess they shelved that plan.
Missy on August 31, 2010 at 12:18 PM
When the Dems would rather talk about the economy than Obamacare, you know ramming that bill through on a party line vote was quite possibly the death knell for the party.
Doughboy on August 31, 2010 at 12:19 PM
They told us that there was a hard pivot at some point on jobs? It seems like the pivot was on the employers and it snuffed them out like a cigarette butt.

Mark Belling, subbing for Rush, is pointing out that selection periods for corporate healthcare plans will be starting in October (and thus they’re getting quotes now) and the cost increases required to meet Obambacare are gonna be UGLY… The Dems can stop moving their lips all they want, but We The People will be hearing more than they want… Expect the wave to be a Tsunami by election day…
phreshone on August 31, 2010 at 12:22 PM
well there Margarida, it would seem that the issue most relevant to constituents is that we don’t like crap sandwiches. We don’t like your crap sandwiches this year, and, we like them less this year than we did last year. How about we forcefeed you some crap sandwich there tootsie?

Even if they “focus” on jobs, the Dems have no answers except tax and spend. Porkulus was their great Keynesian hope, and we all can see what an epic fail that was.

Remember in 1994 the economy was in much better shape and Dems didn’t succeed in passing HillaryCare. And they still got their butts handed to them in November.

On Rush’s show, Mark (boring) Belling is talking about how almost half of private businesses will be hammered by the additional costs brought on by Obamacare and how many of them have no choice but to reduce insurance or increase participant cost for their employees…or both.
No wonder the Dems would like to slink away from this issue.

Now they want us to let them be flexible in what they talk about this election season?

I’m hearing him as well, but this will be easy for the democratics and old media to spin to Bammie’s advantage. Blame it on the ‘greedy and eeeeevil insurance companies’. Round off the narrative with some of their CEO’s salaries and annual revenue and even BOR will be foaming at the mouth. Democratics will demand more power to regulate rates and offer government alternatives.
This will exercise both bases, but will not change a thing.
slickwillie2001 on August 31, 2010 at 1:00 PM
Somewhat OT but related…. the FOMC minutes will be released in a little over an hour. Bernanke is nearly out of ammo even though he’s been doing his best to prop the markets up.
Regardless of how the market reacts there is nothing the Dems can do to alter the situation prior to November. They had their chance and squandered it with their pet project, health care.
Cody1991 on August 31, 2010 at 1:00 PM
And how….we received an email stating our premiums will increase by 9-10%. This might get some of our liberal employees to change their vote this fall! Nah, nevermind. It’s patriotic to pay more….or something.

These cranks, kooks and crooks really don’t know how to be honorable, do they.
Dusty on August 31, 2010 at 1:04 PM
They can, and will, try. The bottom line is that the jobs situation is not improving, and people who have jobs are concerned about keeping them. It’s becoming clear that this so-called health care reform bill will not reduce costs. People are paying more (for everything), incomes are static at best (unless one is a civil servant), and millions are unemployed.
On Zippy’s grading curve I guess that’s a solid B+.

We’ve gotten ours already – 53%.
Yes, that’s not a typo – 53% increase over last year, for this company of 240 employees. Senior management (I support the CFO directly) are in our pre-budget period already, and the talk has turned to cost cutting, hiring freeze *and* reducing current positions, an end to bonuses and raises, pushing more of that insurance cost to employees, etc.
Thanks, Obama. Thanks, Dems.

WE NEED TO PASS IT TO FIND OUT WHAT’S IN IT. – Nancy Pelosi, D
No amount of WH spin or coordinated propaganda campaigns by federal agencies is going to erase the plain and clear meaning of what Pelosi uttered there. She let the mask slip.
They didn’t know what was in it, they didn’t care, and SHUT UP.
That was the Democrats ObamaCare crusade in a nutshell, during which the let the economy delve into the crapper while they ran around trying to convince you that they were (LOL) trying to “cut costs” and “save money” and that you needed to vote for them or be a) investigated, b) attacked by union thugs and assorted Democrat loose-cannons and c) SHUT UP.
