Open thread: The Restoring Honor rally

posted at 10:29 am on August 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

This is already underway, but for those of you who cannot attend the Glenn Beck “Restoring Honor” rally, you can watch it here, live through Ustream TV. I’ll be preparing for my own show this afternoon, but in the meantime, enjoy and feel free to comment. Will this truly be apolitical, as Glenn Beck insists, or will it turn into a political demonstration? Or, rather, will Beck’s political opponents turn it into a political rally themselves? All those questions are being answered right now. And don’t forget to donate to the Special Operations Warriors Fund, the charity that Beck and the rally support today.

anybody have the unofficial count?

jerrytbg on August 28, 2010 at 6:27 PM

WAPO was reporting around 500K so I am guessing if they printed that number it is probably much higher.

Perhaps, but the great thing about our country and its history is that atheists and their voices are not excluded from the public square and their rights are protected as well. All men are created equal, including atheists. Just wish some of them would extend that respect to believers.

True. Story.

The leftists’ comments have all come from a pre-rally perspective, in which they can just “know” exactly how it went down. It’s even funnier when they keep talking Palin, when Palin was — all things considered — a very small part of the rally itself.

Yupp, like I said way back in this thread, Glenn learned his lessons well and took the MSM and race baiters to school. By keeping quiet about the rally it allowed everyone to spout their drivel and push a narrative and now they are shown to be fools.

bluemarlin on August 28, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Michele Bachman is claiming 1 million:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/08/bachmann-holds-a-rally-of-her.html

Dunno if it was that many.

WaPo also claimed Sharpton drew “thousands” so that was probably 2000 tops.

Running around today doing erands, CBS radio news reported…

1. They had “tens” of thousands (not hundreds of thousands)
2. They stated people counter demonstrated about the anniversary of Doctor Kings speech, but made no mention of his neice speaking at the rally.
3. And gave as much time to the Sharpton rally saying that he also had tens of thousands.

Media=State run propaganda.

lansing quaker on August 28, 2010 at 6:37 PM

I agree with what I think True_King meant by that post, but it could have been worded better.

I believe that the Gay Movement is not about making our society more tolerant of openly gay people, but has been coopted (taken-over) by people using it to advance the Progressive agenda.

If that’s not what True_King really meant, then you’ll have to correct me.

Truth be know, it was the very commenters here would turned a sour note on the day for me. I’m not sure why it’s so important for some to throw in their two-cents each and every time any mention of God is made and how “put off” they are by our faith. Really, put off? I think they ought to grow up, and then maybe try to be as tolerant as they demand that we be.

hi folks, we just rolled back into home from the rally today. It was amazing…utterly amazing. Metro blue line crammed. It was fun, it was inspiring and its hard to put it into words. Has it been receiving coverage today? I’m sure it has, but there were TONS of people there. Kind, cheerful, and patriotic people. I don’t know how many people were there but I was on the field to the left of the reflecting pool as you face the Lincoln, and it was packed front to back …all the way back to the WWII memorial.

ted,

I’m jealous, but I’m happy for you. Must have been great.

As to the numbers, the inner aisles around the reflecting pool hold between 50-80,000 each when full. Given the fact that the participants were very polite to each other, take the low end. That’s already 100,000. The open area on the left (as you’re looking toward the Lincoln Memorial) holds at least twice that, but it wasn’t full, so toss in another 100,000. That’s a bare minimum estimate of 200,000. It could fairly easily have been twice that.

And while I was watching on the live feed that TheRightScoop posted, the viewers — on that particular streaming video — never dropped below 120,000.

So the impact was huge.

Congrats, Glenn Beck, and all the speakers and all the participants. It was very inspiring.

Literally. We were able to see everything on a jumbotron and get some shade under a tree. Didn’t stop an older gentleman from fainting tho. Was great to see everyone (docs, nurses, then emt) help him.
I’d like to watch a replay on tv.

hey pilgrim. You guys must’ve been in the shade there on that side. We had the kids in the shade on the furthest south side as far forward as we could go. It worked out great. A few folks were carted out with heat injuries or other stuff. There was a great crew of marshals handing out bottled water with a neat “Restoring Honor” label on it. I made sure to keep the labels to put in scrapbooks.

It was pretty much apolitical in my assessment. I heard “democrat” and “republican” once and “barack obama” once and it was only for descriptive purposes. This was about faith, hope and charity–our duties about citizens and our relationships with God. I was very moved .. we all were, we were with friends who live in DC and other friends who came from Savannah, GA.

As I’ve stated many times. To embrace the gay agenda is to embrace the anti-Christian marxist philosophy. The gay agenda is simply an allied philosophy of the progressive-marxist movement. It is a very deceitful movement that has wrapped itself in the cloak of manufactured rights. Much like the NAACP and NAN are now part of the socialist movement, so to is the gay marriage movement. The modern day marxist movement is an alliance of many “rights” movements.

Christianity and marxism do not mix.

True_King on August 28, 2010 at 6:31 PM

So I’m an anti-Christian Marxist now? I was happier with “liberal troll”.

For the record…I’m for equal treatment under law for all Americans. That includes marriage. If that makes me a lib troll or a Marxist, then I really need to read up. And since I’m a Mass every Sunday, yeah…must be anti-Christian.

On a side note since I left…thanks to WoG, lorien and others who tried to set the record straight (no pun intended)

Sorry to others, that my opinions of today’s rally don’t “high five” your own. That’s fine. And I have nothing against Beck and his efforts at least, just maybe not the way it was presented. Fer cripes sake, Beck lives in my town. I promise I won’t TP his yard. Not that I could ever get to it…you should see his manse…w00t.

Boy, that Sharpton can bring in the crowd, can’t he? Looked like a few hundred people at most.

Terrie, (and any of the rest of you who believe this), for the love of Pete you’ve got to explain how and on what grounds/basis the conclusion has been arrived at, that “Mormons are not Christians”.

Anybody?

I really enjoyed the LaRaza speech at the race rally.

/seriously

When the Mormon Church condemns all other churches…

From the Book of Mormon:

Joseph Smith History 1:18-20:

“My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.”

“I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw• near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.” He again forbade me to join with any of them;…”

Not to mention what it says about Catholics…”great and abominable church”.

The Race Rally “Code Pink is also at the rally, along with other anti-war protesters.”

What has not been mentioned (apologies if I missed it) is that $5M+ was raised for the SOF bubbas. And, I’m sure, Holder and the IRS are auditing this as we speak.

What charity did Rev Al raise money for today?

Dingbat63 on August 28, 2010 at 8:04 PM

So I’m an anti-Christian Marxist now? I was happier with “liberal troll”.

So a religion actually thinks its the one that got it right and the others didn’t?

There’s a shocker if I ever heard one!

Dingbat63 on August 28, 2010 at 8:04 PM

The Al Sharpton charity of course. Which strives to keep a certain man in the style to which he’s become accustomed. And his initials are Al Sharpton.

Thanks for that “copy & paste”, which I’m assuming came from The Book Of Mormon.

I don’t agree with condemning other “denominations”, but I can’t say that disqualifies a person from being a valid Christian believer, either.

*facepalm*

I lol’ed.

At least Catholicism doesn’t condemn other Christian churches as “abominations”.

Not gonna go further on this.

Has Beck ever addressed the Mormon stance on Catholicism ?

CWforFreedom on August 28, 2010 at 8:05 PM

Not to my knowledge, no.

JetBoy on August 28, 2010 at 8:13 PM

Beck was raised a Catholic so I would rather doubt that he’s now into demonizing them/us.
Him doing that would be akin to me now demonizing Jews because I’m no longer Jewish-I’m Catholic.

annoyinglittletwerp on August 28, 2010 at 8:14 PM

I guess you missed the memo though about not posting patriotic stuff. Evidently some of the commenters here think is too corny. We’ll let you slide this time.
hawkdriver on August 28, 2010 at 7:05 PM

In all fairness, Hawk, I didn’t see anyone make any comments that reflected a discomfort with patriotism. I think the “corny” comment from JetBoy was just bad timing, which happened to coincide with when the injured warrior took the stage. He could have been on TIVO… Unlike, say, our President, I don’t question his patriotism or ability to express his love of this country.

CWforFreedom on August 28, 2010 at 8:05 PM

Up ’till now, Glenn hasn’t addressed the Mormon’s stand on anything, except that they believe the Bible.

listens2glenn on August 28, 2010 at 8:16 PM

BTW: how did Rev Jackson let this one get by without a rally of his own?

Dingbat63 on August 28, 2010 at 8:16 PM

JetBoy:

You are a crappy voice for gay conservatives (much less Catholicism). Please quit while heavily behind, gurl.

The Sharpton rally drew thousands…were they counting those watching on CSPAN?

MestizoMaverick on August 28, 2010 at 8:17 PM

I don’t know what Glenn Beck is up to, but as a Christian I am very concerned.

Terrie on August 28, 2010 at 7:43 PM

I certainly do not want to get into a big Mormon / Christian discussion with you. I do want to ask simply, if 240 people of differing faiths and fundementals got on that stage with him, why is Glenn the only one up to something? Now I am assuming that group would predominately be Christian, what are they up to?

Why does he have to be up to anything other than what he has stated?
