WH: Hey, maybe Obama should be talking about the economy

posted at 2:45 pm on August 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Until now, Barack Obama has sent Joe Biden out to do all his talking on the economy, attempting to sell “Recovery Summer” while his boss vacations at Martha’s Vineyard, or hangs out with sports heroes, or, er, eats his shrimp.  Unfortunately for the White House, the economic indicators over the past two months defy any spin whatsoever, especially this month, with home sales cratering and the second quarter GDP getting revised to stagnation levels.   ABC News’ Jake Tapper hears that the White House figures that maybe the President of the United States should talk a little more himself about his economic policies … if they can figure out when to fit it in:

President Obama was largely invisible to the public, taking in 10 days of R&R in the posh Chilmark section of Martha’s Vineyard. When he re-emerges to the public on Sunday, he will be kicking off a series of high profile events that have little to do with the issue foremost on Americans’ minds: jobs. On Sunday the president will travel to New Orleans to commemorate the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. On Tuesday he will deliver only his second Oval Office address, discussing the withdrawal of US combat troops from Iraq. On Wednesday and Thursday, he and his administration will focus on kick-starting peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

“We know he needs to be out there to talk about the economy next week,” a White House official told ABC News, acknowledging the need for the president to talk about the issue on the minds of Americans in the midst of a schedule packed with events focused on other priorities. “We haven’t yet figured out the way he’s going to do that.”

The White House is pushing its $30 billion small business lending initiative and other measures to stimulate economic growth, such as the elimination of capital gains taxes for small business investments. But advisers say there is little appetite on Capitol Hill for any new spending programs, and limited time in the congressional calendar, suggesting that they feel there aren’t any more major initiatives the administration will push in further attempts to revise the sputtering economy. Voices inside and outside the administration are calling for a host of other remedies including more infrastructure spending and tax cuts.

The priorities of this administration are rather interesting.  Instead of focusing on the crisis at hand, Obama wants to focus on the crisis from five years ago, no doubt to reinforce his PR strategy of if-you-think-I’m-bad-remember-who-I-replaced.  In the very next step, Obama will take credit from his predecessor, who handed the withdrawal date and plan to Obama (who at least had the wisdom not to blow it).  And while the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is important, it’s hardly the highest priority for most Americans, especially those struggling to keep jobs and homes.

Maybe that’s for the best, though, if Obama tries to shill Recovery Summer, too.  The problem isn’t the salesman, it’s the product.  Arguing that the economy is headed in the right direction, when joblessness remains at a generational high and the GDP has dropped from a middling 3.7% to an embarrassing 1.6%, has already discredited Biden.  Having Obama descend from Mount Martha’s Vineyard to declare that all is well! will only reinforce the notion that Obama has completely lost touch with mainstream America and perhaps with reality as well.  Obama can afford to have Biden play court jester, but he can’t do it himself without completely losing his political support.

The weeks-long delay in responding to the numbers is quite easy to explain.  Obama doesn’t want to address the fact that his extremely expensive stimulus plan has failed, and he doesn’t have a Plan B to unveil to American voters.  Instead, it’s just easier to let people slowly realize that the White House is rudderless while the President eats his shrimp and finds new ways to talk about George Bush.

As I have said numerous times before, Obama may have been born in the US, but he is not an American. He has no clue.

If I had to bet… I’d say this is just what he’ll do. Remember Obama, the person himself was meant to be the cure for all our problems. We’re just not getting enough Obama!

Biden predicted GDP growth at 6-7% IIRC. So, he’s 4.4% underwater from his prediction. On jobs, we’re 1.5+% over the 8% Romer unemployment prediction.

All is well, chip…..all is well…/

Obama……..can’t do it himself without completely losing his political support.

At this point in time, I think it is reasonably safe to conclude that any political support that Obama had for his economic “policy”, whatever the bleeding heck it is, is pretty much in the final stages of complete evaporation.

He should change the Oval Office speech to a press conference, and take questions. Then he will be able to talk about the economy.

If they don’t do that, we can only believe they are actively avoiding the topic.

MayBee on August 27, 2010 at 2:59 PM

With something as complex as the US Economy, you would think this would be fertile ground for Obama’s unmistakable talent to lie. Granted, every time the word ‘economy’ runs out of his blow hole, you can rest assured that it’ll be followed by a fairy tale…but come on…she’s swirlin’ down the crapper, people are really STARTING TO NOTICE

A week after telling the nation that “nobody messes with Joe,” President Obama bestowed yet another title on Vice President Biden to describe his role as a zealous overseer of the $787-billion economic stimulus plan.

“To you – he’s Mr. Vice President, but around the White House we call him ‘the Sheriff’- because if you’re misusing taxpayer money, you’ll have to answer to him.”

But that won’t stop him.

How about laser focused on jobs, jobs, jobs?

Sir Napsalot on August 27, 2010 at 2:48 PM

How about laser focus on dismantling the hostile legal and regulatory environment that he and his administration have created for business. If he does that, economic growth and employment will take care of itself. As it stands, Obama and his economic clowns will continue to tinker with useless tweaking of the command economy that they’ve been creating all to appear as if they are doing something while they pick winners and losers with tax dollars.

BuckeyeSam on August 27, 2010 at 3:03 PM

Instead, it’s just easier to let people slowly realize that the White House is rudderless while the President eats his shrimp and finds new ways to talk about George Bush.

A truly scary prospect. And it doesn’t bode well for him in 2012. Sure, he can try to paint the GOP as the enemy since they’ll be in control of the House and possibly the Senate(the shenanigans by Murkowski and Crist notwithstanding) and of course he’ll continue to point the finger at Bush who’ll have been out of office for nearly 4 years, but he has to have an agenda of his own to run on. He can’t propose more stimulus and tax cuts seem to be anathema to the guy. So what will he campaign on?

It’s a lost cause, both the economy and his presidency, and Obama knows it. He is the definition of “powerless.” He’s not as smart as everyone thought, but he’s smart enough to know this. Might as well go play another round or two, then take the the little woman out for some more lobster on the public dime while he can.

Scotsman on August 27, 2010 at 3:04 PM

I agree with his advisers that he needs to get out and talk about the economy. He’s so ignorant about economics, and he’s such a liar that I want it all on full display. Over and over and over.

He’ll bungle it. Whoever writes his speeches is as clueless as he is. His lack of concern will be obvious as it was with Ft. Hood and numerous other incidents. This is one issue that people care about, and those who voted for him need to see what a disaster he is.

From CBS, no less. Bloomberg & Obama are golfing today at Martha’s Vineyard.

As of today, according to CBS News White House correspondent and unofficial White House statistician Mark Knoller, the president has played 49 rounds of golf since taking office, including five times on this vacation. That does not include a round of mini-golf he played earlier this month with daughter Sasha.

President George W Bush played 24 rounds of golf during the first two and a half years of his presidency and then stopped, feeling it was inappropriate for the Commander-in-Chief to be seen playing golf while the nation was at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. His last game of golf as president was on Oct 13, 2003.

His so-called hard pivot back in January was that “jobs bill” that took months to pass and was nothing but another bailout for public sector unions. I think he was still under the delusion that the economy would rebound on its own(the 5.7% GDP that had just been reported must’ve bolstered his faith in Porkulus) and paying lip service with the jobs bill would be enough to get his detractors to back off. After that, it was right back to Obamacare.

Unfortunately for him, the jobs bill was nothing of the sort. Porkulus is still a failure. Obamacare hasn’t improved the Democrats’ prospects for the midterms one iota. And now the economy is sliding back into another recession. So he has no bullets left in the chamber(aside from tax cuts and spending decreases) and no clue what to do.

Aides insist the Obamas have not downsized their Vineyard vacation — that’s just their island style. “Martha’s Vineyard is a pretty low-key place,” said Burton. “This vacation’s exactly like last year’s, only rainier.”

Still, it’s a big change from when President Bill Clinton visited here, dining out often and making the rounds at the homes of the island’s political and literary set — from author William Styron to actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. Clinton once threw a party for friends and reporters where he accompanied singer Carly Simon on saxophone.

At least some residents grouse that Obama should be out visiting more shops and boosting the local economy, especially since his motorcades have snarled traffic.

“I think it’s really bothersome to a lot of people,” said Wendy Maseda, 40, of Oak Bluffs. She said the difference with Clinton is “huge … Clinton really helped businesses here.”

Post Turtle.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our President.

The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Obama is a ‘post turtle’.’

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’ was. The old rancher said, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle’.’

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain.

‘You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there!.’

dominigan on August 27, 2010 at 3:39 PM

LOL

So after Captain Kickass and sidekick Smartass, what’s next?

right2bright on August 27, 2010 at 3:40 PM

I think they’re trying to figure out how to string the tired, old stock Obama slogans together to make something new.

karl9000 on August 27, 2010 at 3:43 PM

What happened to his “hard pivot”?

DrStock on August 27, 2010 at 3:40 PM

I was confused also, Dr. But, apparently, that “pivot” was on jobs, not the economy. Silly me for thinking you’d bifurcate to two…

Citizen Dumbass gets to pay for it all.

karl9000 on August 27, 2010 at 3:45 PM

So,that is why Bambi scheduled this vaca when he did.
Just in time to blame Boooosh for Kate and take credit for bringing home the troops.
More like Clenis every day.

Worked perfectly: squished ‘em flatter than a bug…

karl9000 on August 27, 2010 at 3:46 PM

it’ll be fun to watch obama deliver his iraq speach with an 800 lb gorilla sitting on his desk wearing a Recovery Summer tank top.

DrW on August 27, 2010 at 3:33 PM

or, Rosie Odonnell with some pom poms.

ted c on August 27, 2010 at 3:34 PM

There’s a difference? (Sorry, couldn’t stop myself…)

dominigan on August 27, 2010 at 3:47 PM

Why can’t we have a cool president like Putin who goes out and kills bears and whales and sh*t when he goes on vacation. If the guy is going to screw off while in office, the least he could do is be a manly man about it.

Wyznowski on August 27, 2010 at 3:49 PM

It takes Obama 10 days to read My Pet Goat?

faraway on August 27, 2010 at 3:52 PM

The ineffectual pansy currently vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard has never served as an executive anywhere. He knows not how to prioritize. As my dad used to say, he is as useless as a tit on a bull.

The nonsense about heading to NO for a Katrina anniversary takes the cake in that he has effectively destroyed much of the economy in the Gulf between his dithering after the oil spew and his haste to shut down offshore drilling through an unjustified moratorium. The Cajuns in the Big Easy should give him a warm welcome and then tell him to hit the pike.

onlineanalyst on August 27, 2010 at 3:54 PM

President Clinton gave Al Gore important duties.
President Bush relied on the wisdom and experience of Dick Cheney and asigned him important tasks.
Obama doesn’t have a clue what to do with Biden becasue with Obama, it’s always all about him. Obama thinks he’s the freaking King of America and we’re all here for his own personal enjoyment.

Subtle. And sweet…

karl9000 on August 27, 2010 at 4:00 PM

This is nothing a hard pivot to jobs won’t fix.

GardenGnome on August 27, 2010 at 4:01 PM

“We haven’t yet figured out the way he’s going to do that.”

That’s what is so maddening about him and the cause of the rage in America. He doesn’t even address our concerns! We’re all just bitter clingers, brainwashed by fearmongering Fox, or racists.

PattyJ on August 27, 2010 at 4:02 PM

Gravitas, it’s what’s for dinner. Compare and contrast between Scooter and Dick Cheney

Heh…
Is he toting Bo (the dog) behind him in that one? Looks like he’s got a trailer hooked up to that thing… surely Sasha and Malia are too big to haul back there?

SnowSun on August 27, 2010 at 4:06 PM

PS – In addition to the flat tire issue, he could also save energy by raising his seat up a little.

That one is several years old, and is from Chicago. Notice, however, the shoes, pants, shirt and helmet. In both pictures. It looks like he forgot to pack his bike riding clothes again.

That, or it wasn’t his idea to go riding. “But…but…Michelle, I don’t like riding…I get all sweaty and stuff”

“GET ON THE DAMN BIKE!”

BobMbx on August 27, 2010 at 4:13 PM

…maybe the President of the United States should talk a little more…

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

KS Rex on August 27, 2010 at 4:16 PM

Having Obama descend from Mount Martha’s Vineyard to declare that all is well!

Dionysus Obamysus
Bacchus Obacchus

If you are talented, photoshop away.

This will and should kill them.

Instead, it’s just easier to let people slowly realize that the White House is rudderless while the President eats his shrimp and finds new ways to talk about George Bush.

He and Chelley prefer lobster tempura. When was the last time you had any?
