Video: Crist says he would have voted for ObamaCare — after saying last month that he would have voted against it

posted at 4:39 pm on August 27, 2010 by Allahpundit

So here’s where we are with this tool. We already knew that he’d flip-flopped about repealing the law — initially he said he agreed with Rubio that it should be scrapped, then turned around last month and said he didn’t — but now he’s going to go the rest of the nine yards and claim that he would have voted for it straightaway. A stroll down memory lane with Hotline:

“I think what we need to do is go ahead and repeal this thing,” said Crist, while on “Fox News Sunday” on March 28. “Let’s start over. Let’s take an opportunity to do what’s right for the people.”

After switching parties, Crist softened his rhetoric on the issue. In a July 14 interview with the Wall Street Journal, he said the law “should be modified,” and didn’t support repealing it.

He then issued a “fact check” on his website on July 29, after people were understandably confused about where he stood on the issue.

“The Obama health care bill was too big, too expensive, and expanded the role of government far too much,” Crist wrote. “Had I been in the United States Senate at the time, I would have voted against the bill because of unacceptable provisions like the cuts to the Medicare Advantage program.”

As you’ll see, he does qualify what he says about voting for the bill by emphasizing that there are parts he wants to see changed. But even that’s pure expediency, of course: For one thing, he’s stressing Medicare here because he’s nakedly pandering for senior votes in Florida (not the first time he’s pandered on entitlements for the elderly, either), and for another, he knows that even by his usual standards his opportunistic positioning on this issue is a cynical disgrace. So much so, in fact, that just in the past hour or two he’s flipped back the other way and issued a statement claiming he “misspoke” in the interview and that he would indeed have voted against the bill. Except, of course, he didn’t misspeak: It’s painfully obvious in the clip that he knows exactly what he’s saying to the interviewer, but he probably forgot while he was saying it that he already had a bunch of statements critical of O-Care on the record. When he was reminded afterwards, he must have realized that a full reversal on this one would be a bridge too far even for him. No wonder his approval rating’s now underwater. What a worm. Click the image to watch.

Gotta say one thing for him. He has some huge cajones.

I think Crist might be better off if his campaign slogan was “Being the kind of sycophant you want”.

Perhaps all the Florida sunshine has addled his brains. Or perhaps he’s incompetent at managing his flip-flop excuses.

One thing Christopher Hitchens says that I fully agree with is that you must believe in principles and not people. People will let you down; your principles won’t.

Of course, that also applies to fans of Mr. Hitchens but that’s another thread for another day.

No thread for the competition. But this deserves one.

When I join Beck and all gathered at the Lincoln Memorial this weekend, I will talk about my Uncle Martin and the America he envisioned. I will talk about honor and character and sacrifice. I will be joined by those who represent the diversity of the human race.

On Saturday, Uncle Martin’s dream of personhood and human dignity will resound across America. And the Park Police should consider themselves forewarned: As we stand in the symbolic shadow of the great American who signed the Emancipation Proclamation, we just might sing.

Dr. Alveda King is the director of African-American outreach for Priests for Life, and the founder of King for America.

From: John McCain [john@johnmccain.com]
Sent: Friday, August 27, 2010 10:18 AM

Subject: Don’t let my liberal opponent win

My Friend,

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude for all of your hard work and support during my primary election. Without it, I would not have celebrated such a considerable victory on Tuesday night. It was a spirited race, and I’m honored to have once again earned the support and confidence of Arizona voters and Republicans across the country.

Today, it is my hope that you will continue to stand with me as I turn my attention to the general election campaign against an opponent who stands with the liberal leadership currently in power in Washington.

The startling reality is that Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress are leading our country in the wrong direction. Spending is out of control, our taxes are too high, and the government is far too involved in our private lives.

Returning to Washington to continue leading the charge against the Democrats’ agenda and working hard to provide commonsense solutions for America’s challenges is my top priority. I’m reaching out to you today as one of my strongest supporters because I need your support to run a strong general election campaign.

Will you consider making an investment in America’s future by following this link and making a contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250 or more to my campaign today?

My answer to the Senator:

Senator McCain,

I supported you with quite a bit of my hard earned money when you were running against then Senator Obama. You were not my first choice because of your frequent pandering to the Democrats. You are sounding like a Conservative again and I hope you can maintain a Conservative agenda as you promised during that campaign. Frankly, your “maverick” behavior worries me that you and Senator Graham might cave and support Amnesty for illegal aliens. I don’t want to chance any more of my money in support of that possibility.

Good luck with your reelection campaign.
