Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on August 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
President Obama gets a lot of flack for taking much of the summer up with “vacations,” getaways with his family (and the dog), but that’s mostly unfair. While Obama’s choices of venue certainly call his judgment into question, Presidents never really take “vacations.” The job follows them wherever they go, just as it did with George W. Bush. They may get a few moments to take in the local flavor, but when important events occur and issues arise, they get back to work.
Or, at least they usually do. Dan Riehl noted that a series of coordinated attacks in Iraq by terrorists killed 55 on the occasion where the US drew its troop strength below 55,000 in accordance with the plan signed by Bush and Nouri al-Maliki in the summer of 2008. When a reporter asked for Obama to comment on whether this showed the risks of maintaining that drawdown schedule while violence continued, Obama assumed the full mantle of the Presidency to address the serious security situation:
As the president walked around the restaurant, some cordoned-off reporters shouted out to him questions, including one about the war in Iraq. Next Tuesday night, the president will deliver an Oval Office address at 8 pm ET, in which he will mark the occasion of the withdrawal of US combat troops from the country.
But the president was in no mood today to discuss the issue with reporters in that setting. He ignored questions for a bit, then turned to the reporters.
“We’re buying shrimp, guys,” he said, smiling. “Come on.”
Maybe those people criticizing the weeks of vacation have a point.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

They didn’t interrupt their schedules for the ‘Christmas Bomber’ either.
The Obama Administration’s Number 1 Priority has always been: Themselves and their enjoyment of executive perks.

I didn’t think he cared for shrimp. He didn’t want any last week down on the “Redneck Riviera” getaway.

Not an unexpected response by someone who wants all of the authority, but none of the accountability.

Ya think?
But it really isn’t the raw number of vacation days, it’s the dismissive spirit in which they’ve been taken. It’s the subtle (and not so subtle) attitudes exhibited by the president and his wife about privilege and noblesse oblige. It’s the lack of recognition on their part that millions of citizens in their nation are out of work, thousands, to tens of thousands are losing their homes, but the president and first lady are partying like there’s no tomorrow. Life’s a whirlwind of Paul McCartney concerts (televised by NPR, natch), lunches with kings and lobster, lobster, lobster. Most of your citizens have made concessions large or small in the face of a poor economy. Not the Obamas. They’ve made it to the Big Time, and they’re not going to let the miseries of a few million people intrude on their personal success.
Said succinctly by another aristocrat a while back:

I do not mind Dear Liar taking vacations — it’s the only time He’s not actively harming the US. I’d just wish that He makes his vacations permanent.

no one will listen to me!!!!!!!!!
I’m telling you, Obama needs TEL-EYE-PROMPTERS.
Sunglasses that are prompters.
They can receive text from black berry phones. That way, aides can text him responses that immediately scroll down his sunglasses and he can read it.
TEL-EYE-PROMPTER.

Obama can’t do two things at once. That explains why the Dems think the American public can’t focus on more than one thing at a time – because they can’t!

At the least, he could have used his most vaunted (by the media) intelligence to manufacture a throwaway comment about desperate insurgents, confidence in the Iraqi military capabilities, and adherence to the promise not to stay in Iraq one day longer than necessary. That would have given the reporters, clinging bitterly to their manufactured story lines and faith in Teh Ø, something positive to write about. Even George W. Bush could do that.
.
Instead, Mr. Passive Aggressive Narcissist couldn’t make the comment followed up by:

sandee on August 27, 2010 at 8:34 AM
What’s sad is 1.6% GDP will actually be considered “not that bad” by many since people were speculating it could be revised as low as under 1%.

He probably had no idea what the reporter was talking about. If he wasn’t there, he doesn’t care.

Go to Newsbusters and watch the “shrimp clip” where Joe Scarborough and Willy Geist are poking fun of the “shrimp line” and just watch/listen to Mika Brezenski the entire 60 seconds or so. I had to watch 5 or 6 times. “Well, he was buying shrimp!” and she is spitting furious.
Marcus on August 27, 2010 at 8:41 AM
It’s the American voters who bought the “shrimp”.

What he’d expect? That the presidency is a part-time gig? Geez, as I can remember it no one put a gun a to his head and forced him to run for the office.

Part time job. Full time vacation.
He’s never held an actual job with measureable performance milestones. He doesn’t know what’s expected. He is a total waste of skin. 2012 cannot arrive soon enough.

The Obama white house doesn’t work weekends either.
This administration goes silent after the Friday night document dump, and nothing happens until Monday. Even the appearances on the Sunday talk shows are perfunctory, and in this administration, if Obama ain’t working, nobody is working.

He needs to stop acting like he is doing us a favor by being President. Has he already forgotten how he toured the country spending millions to convince us to let him be President? If he doesn’t want the job anymore he is free to step down.

23,000 jobs destroyed by Obama…for a handful of shrimp.
Sums up Obama’s economic recovery plan, to perfection.
Also, Michelle said it was “safe to travel to Mexico”. Why didn’t she go there, instead of Spain? Even the lobster is cheaper there.

Michelle Antoinette Obama
nom nom nom
justltl on August 27, 2010 at 1:05 PM
I heard this comment and the first thing that came to mind was Marie Antoinette. She was infamous for saying “Let them eat cake”. Why do I make the connection? Because, the Obama Administration just put strick limitatiions on the number of fish that someone can catch. A protest was held at Martha’s Vineyard by the Fisherman’s Organization. When Obama turns his deaf ewar to their requests, the price of all seafood will go up, tremendously. So, this will become a food that only the rich will be to afford. Therefore, by him saying, “We’re buying shrimp” means that he’s laughing at us, since he and his liberal millionaires will be the only ones that will be doing so in the future.
djaymick on August 27, 2010 at 2:44 PM
Unfortunately, America also bought a shrimp instead of a real president…
