Obama to U.S. troops in Iraq: You’ve “made America safer”

posted at 3:24 pm on August 27, 2010 by Allahpundit

I hate to needle him when he’s patting the troops on the back, but isn’t this … the very antithesis of the left’s messaging on the Iraq war for the past seven years? We’ve reached a point of consensus on the fact that the surge worked, but on the question of whether the war improved national security, it’s a mixed bag:

I’m actually shocked that 18 percent of Dems — virtually all of them centrists, no doubt — say it’s made America safer. In fact, never mind the left: Isn’t this the very antithesis of Obama’s own messaging on the war as a candidate? September 12, 2007:

The excellence of our military is unmatched. But as a result of this war, our forces are under pressure as never before. Our National Guard and reserves have half of the equipment they need to respond to emergencies at home and abroad. Retention among West Point graduates is down. Our powers of deterrence and influence around the world are down. That is a cost of this war.

America’s standing has suffered. Our diplomacy has been compromised by a refusal to talk to people we don’t like. Our alliances have been compromised by bluster. Our credibility has been compromised by a faulty case for war. Our moral leadership has been compromised by Abu Ghraib. That is a cost of this war.

Perhaps the saddest irony of the Administration’s cynical use of 9/11 is that the Iraq War has left us less safe than we were before 9/11. Osama bin Ladin and his top lieutenants have rebuilt a new base in Pakistan where they freely train recruits, plot new attacks, and disseminate propaganda. The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan. Iran has emerged as the greatest strategic challenge to America in the Middle East in a generation. Violent extremism has increased. Terrorism has increased. All of that is a cost of this war.

Luckily, he’s now solved all the problems in that last paragraph. Again, I don’t want to beat up on him for offering a morale booster as C-in-C but I’m intrigued that he’d add this rhetorical flourish when he really didn’t have to. He could have congratulated the troops on their heroism and their achievement in freeing Iraq from Saddam’s Orwellian nightmare, and left it at that. Instead, this. Hmmm.

With all due respect to them, our troops who have served so courageously in Iraq deserve the credit for the success of the surge and, along with the Iraqi people, the turnaround in Iraq.

The success of the troop surge is undeniable. By taking the fight to al Qaeda, other terrorist threats, and the insurgency, our men and women in uniform succeeded in providing greater security to the Iraqi population and giving the government the time to build capacity to more effectively meet the needs of the Iraqi people. As a result, the drawdown of U.S. troops that began in 2008 has been able to continue. I commend President Obama for listening to our commanders in the field and working closely with them, the Iraqi people, and the Congress to ensure that we continue making significant strides there.

“The difference is we’re in an election season. And this whole issue, I think, will go away right after the next election. This is plain and simple people trying to stir up things to get publicity and trying to polarize people so that they can get some votes. And I don’t think that most of these people who are yelling and screaming really care one way or another.”

Bloomberg is also saying: Stop yelling and screaming bitter clingers. You are against freedom and unamerican. And lay off the trans fats and cigaretts or we will make you lay off them.

Fresh combat troops from Ft. Hood were just sent to Iraq even as the military withdraws.

Obama prepares America for his decision to keep the military in Afghanistan. Petraeus said more time, giving Obama someone for his media to blame for staying there.

Obama has to play nice if he’s to encourage military enlistment for his all volunteer forces.

Obama finally addresses the many troops whose homecoming was made a major big deal of on every cable and TV station….LAST THURSDAY! President Bush and Laura were in Texas welcoming troops home on Wednesday. Perhaps that kind, warm gesture finally registered to the clueless and could-care-less Obama.

Obama, before jetting off to his vacation, was on camera last Thursday, busy chastising the Republicans, and then on Friday, busily making recess appointments – and uttered not a single word about the returning
troops.

Guess Obama’s “let me order my shrimp” reply when he was asked about Iraq must have gotten him some negative traction.

Actually, I did some research on OpenSecrets.org a couple of months ago and was surprised to see that he did get a lot of money from Halliburton employees, including some very hefty donations from one of their VPs.

Not a surprise, though-Bill Clinton gave Halliburton no-bid work in his own War of Choice, and Democrat President Lyndon Johnson climbed into bed with former Halliburton affiliate KBR in 1936 and never left.

Obama on his “sacrosanct vacation” was obviously shamed into this emergency CYA speech-let by the oh so dumb, knuckle-dragging Bush couple showing up in Dallas to welcome some returning troops. It also finally dawned on someone that the question about Iraq was about the drawdown, about which Obama had said not ONE WORD while it was happening. last week. Simple faux pas?

The Declining Terrorist Threat

By LARRY C. JOHNSON
Published: July 10, 2001

The greatest risk is clear: if you are drilling for oil in Colombia — or in nations like Ecuador, Nigeria or Indonesia — you should take appropriate precautions; otherwise Americans have little to fear.

….in a little over a month….a country that had not attacked our mainland and had little to no army or weapons….brought down the twin towers along with attacking the Pentagon.

Not sure where you were at but it was pretty well determined that after having our embassies and battleships bombed along with the terrible events of 9/11….that we had to handle the terrorist threat in a different way.
We decided to go on the offensive.

Iraq had refused to abide by it’s own surrender agreements…..was kicking out UN inspectors or giving them the run around….was using sanctions as a money laundering scheme(oil for food) to purchase weapons and restock their WMD supplies by using the dual use machinery that they possessed (see Duelfer report…six months tops to restock),after the UN heat died off.
Iraq’s many connections and support of terrorist groups like Al-qaeda also added to the level of danger that Iraq poised not just in the region…but also to America.

Hillary Clinton stated this very point before casting her vote to go to war in Iraq:

“Every nation has to either be with us, or against us.
Those who harbor terrorists, or who finance them, are going to pay a price.”

Senator Hillary Clinton (Democrat, New York)
During an interview on CBS Evening News with Dan Rather
    September 13, 2001

…oh wait….I mean this quote:

    Senator Hillary Clinton
(Democrat, New York)
During an interview on CBS Evening News with Dan Rather
    September 13, 2001

“My position is very clear: The time has come for decisive action to eliminate the threat posed by Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction.  I’m a co-sponsor of the bipartisan Resolution that’s presently under consideration in the Senate.  Saddam Hussein’s regime is a grave threat to America and our allies.  We know that he has chemical and biological weapons today, that he’s used them in the past, and that he’s doing everything he can to build more.  Every day he gets closer to his long-term goal of nuclear capability.

This is not just a moral imperative.  It’s a security imperative.  It is in America’s national interest to help build an Iraq at peace with itself and its neighbors, because a democratic, tolerant and accountable Iraq will be a peaceful regional partner, and such an Iraq could serve as a model for the entire Arab world.”

Even after all the outcry about not finding “stockpiles” of WMD’s in Iraq…one of the left’s biggest heroes still concluded:

David Kay:

“It was reasonable to conclude that Iraq posed an imminent threat. What we learned during the inspection made Iraq a more dangerous place potentially than in fact we thought it was even before the war.” (interview on NPR).

You might want to glance through the resolution to go to war that Congress passed. You will notice that aside from the mistakes regarding “stockpiles of WMD’s” and “nuclear capabilities”(Saddam still possessed the machinery to manufacture and restock his WMD arsenal)…..the vote to go to war was pretty dead on.

….remember….it was Saddam’s responsibility to be cooperative and transparent concerning his weapons capabilities…..he refused to abide by his own surrender agreement and UN inspections……

……..We did not know what Saddam had or didn’t have until after there were 130,000 sets of boots on the ground.

JOINT RESOLUTION ON IRAQ

October 11, 2002

Congress passes a bipartisan resolution authorizing President Bush to use military force, acting alone if necessary, in order to ensure that Iraq disarms any weapons of mass destruction.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/july-dec02/joint_resolution_10-11-02.html

Whereas in Public Law 105-235 (August 14, 1998), Congress concluded that Iraq’s continuing weapons of mass destruction programs threatened vital United States interests and international peace and security, declared Iraq to be in `material and unacceptable breach of its international obligations’ and urged the President `to take appropriate action, in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws of the United States, to bring Iraq into compliance with its international obligations’;

It still amazes me that people can have a problem with eliminating one of the most ruthless, genocidal madman in the history of the world.

“an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences.’

ALL wars are undetermined length, with undetermined costs and undetermined consequences.’

Jezz this guy was an idiot back in 07 as well.

The full accounting of those costs and consequences will only be known to history.

As is true with all wars.

DSchoen on August 27, 2010 at 11:59 PM

A trillion dollars. That’s money not spent on homeland security and counter-terrorism; on providing health care to all Americans and a world-class education to every child; on investments in energy to save ourselves and our planet from an addiction to oil. That is a cost of this war.

That is the cost of the boondoggle know as the Obama’s “Stim Plan”

Obama, 2007 on Iraq

The bar for success is so low that it is almost buried in the sand.

Lets see, hum, My stim plan will create 3.5 million private sector jobs!
