CBS poll puts Obama at 48% approval …

posted at 9:30 am on August 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Recently, CBS had appeared to take its sampling methodology a little more seriously.  Partisan splits had started to appear more rational, and not coincidentally, Barack Obama’s polling had declined sharply in their surveys.  So when CBS reported, oddly considering the economic news of late, that Obama had gotten a slight bounce in his numbers, I became a little suspicious … and for good reason:

Fewer than half of Americans approve of the job President Obama is doing, although his approval rating is slightly up since last month, according to a new CBS News poll. Nearly as many people disapprove of the job he is doing.

Mr. Obama’s overall job approval rating has remained below 50 percent since April, and this month is no different. Now, 48 percent approve, while 44 percent disapprove, according to the poll, conducted Aug. 20 – 24. His approval rating has inched up from 44 percent last month, and is similar to what it was in June.

The president continues to receive net negative ratings on this handling of the economy – the nation’s top concern. Forty-eight percent disapprove of his handling of it, while 44 percent approve.

That 44/48 rating on the economy is a dead giveaway.  As bad as that number is for any sitting President, it’s far higher than other pollsters have found.  I took a look at the sample and discovered why:

Unw Wei Unw Pct Wei Pct
Rep 312 282 28.8% 26.1%
Dem 353 362 32.6% 33.5%
Ind 417 438 38.5% 40.5%
1082 1082

Let’s break this down, shall we?  Before CBS weighted the results, the actual sample was at least close to reality, with Democrats favored by 3.8 points, although independents look a little oversampled.  Instead of just sticking with that — or correcting for the oversample of independents — CBS made it worse by lowering the Republicans in weighting by almost three full points, adding two points to independents and another point to Democrats.  That gives Democrats in this poll the same gap from Republicans by which Obama won the popular vote in 2008, and flies in the face of repeated Gallup and Rasmussen polls that show the partisan split to be somewhere between 1-3 points.

Even with the ridiculous weighting scheme from CBS, they can’t hide the fact that people are rapidly losing confidence in this administration, especially on the economy.  In July, 25% thought it was getting better, 26% said worse, and 48% said it was staying the same.  Now those numbers are 20/34/44, respectively.

Well we know that Obama should be polling in the 51-52 percent approval range, so any corrective factor we apply to the raw data that produces the correct approval number is therefore the correct adjustment which needs to be applied to the raw data.

The Inverted Bush Treatment. I really do wonder how much the media’s use of polls in the last 3-4 years of Bush skuttled him. I begin to think, well-timed, well-manipulated polls can move public opinion in a massive way. With the media’s support could Bush have held his negatives to low 40s too? Could that have been enough to hold the losses in congress down and restrain Obama’s agenda, or even have gotten McCain elected? It seems to me that the coordinated concerted efforts of the media are far more damaging than people give them credit for. And that says a lot since they get a lot of credit for their wide swath of destruction.

I don’t remember where, but during the election someone was talking about media bias accounting for about 15% of public opinion on any given topic.

That seems pretty high, but when you consider a solid quarter of the country doesn’t follow political issues even remotely close it might not be that far off.

Kinda OT:

Last night on the phone, a pollster asked me if I recognized some names. I am ashamed to say that I did not (my state assemblyman and his opponents, guess I need to do some reading…)

Even though I said “no”, he continued, asking questions about my OPINION on statements made by these people who I had never heard of. I told him I couldn’t comment because I would have to understand the context before I could formulate an opinion, because I DIDN’T KNOW THESE PEOPLE.

He powered through…prompting me to then say “neutral”. There was no option for “I don’t know” or “no opinion”.

I quit the survey and hung up.

Fifty-six percent of Americans say the Bush tax cuts for people earning over $250,000 per year should be allowed to expire.

Except that’s a lie. Would love to see a list of the questions they actually ask people. I really want to know how the worded they question about the Bush Tax Cuts. Because as everyone who doesn’t get to take a CBS poll knows, the tax cuts are going to expire for everyone in just a few short months. It looks like CBS gets the results they want by asking misleading, confusing and inaccurate questions. In short they’re lying.

The Independent number is going to rise as more and more people become disgusted with both parties, but what is important is to learn the leanings of the Independents. It is easy to skew a poll by oversampling Independent/Leans Democrat. Without revealing the leanings of the Independents in a poll I automatically discard it.

although independents look a little oversampled

Although it is more common to talk to an “independent” who is conservative, the overwhelming percentage of “independents” I have known in my life were not indecisive about their beliefs, rather, they were far more radical then the democrat platform. It might be more eye opening to see the numbers among self identifying conservative, moderate and liberals instead of party affiliation. I still would think barry’s approval rating cannot be accurately gauged. The 20% of voters who are wack jobs will never disapprove and any others who approve are likely not willing to admit they are wrong. Most of those voted for barry to feel good about themselves so they are not going to admit they were idiots.

Key West Reader on August 27, 2010 at 11:25 AM

how can one poll be really compared to the other if the weighting and sampling are adjusted each time? The external validity of this poll is questionable by Ed’s analysis. If the sample doesn’t represent truth, then the conclusions cannot be valid. This is like concluding that 48% of people who have had a heart attack will live until they are 90—and then you subsequently find out that the sample of people lives adjacent to a heart center and are predominantly Japanese people who eat rice, fish and veggies. It simply does not reflect the truth and cannot be generalized to the greater population of Americans if the sample does not reflect the “truth.”

On another note, I saw an AFSME (is that the correct acronym for the government union peeps?) ad running against the DEM Congressman down in the SW section of MI last night. That left me scratching my head. He is in his 2nd term and has obediently voted with Pelosi like a good little soldier.

Dick Morris was predicting at least a 70 seat swing in the House this fall. At this rate, I think he is underpredicting. The Dems are in a free fall. Obama is a boat anchor to them in this election. Polls are the body politic’s nerve endings. Screwing with poll results is akin to shutting down feedback mechanism that tells you–via pain–that something is wrong.

They keep doing it and it keeps working out the same way: “Unexpected!” results. Let them diddle themselves all they want until November 2.

Obama has to be happy with every poll he sees. He has apparently hit the bottom and the bottom is very high ratings considering all the bad news.

Done That on August 27, 2010 at 1:53 PM

Well, I don’t think CBS is weighting like you guys think they are. They usually do weighting according to the demographics of those polled, not according to party. So the party percentages might end up differently after the demographic weighting is done.

Either way, though, they’ve got to recognize that their weighted result is sheer fantasy.
