Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on August 26, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, I noted that when it comes to the economy and Barack Obama’s asserting ownership of it last summer, all sales are final. Today, we have to remind him that most refunds are final, too. A month after a diplomatic letter to Scotland from the US came to light showing little interest in demanding extradition of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi, Barack Obama has suddenly gotten interested in his extradition … from Libya:

The Obama administration asked Friday that the only person convicted for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 be returned to a Scottish prison.

John Brennan, President Barack Obama’s counterterrorism adviser, told reporters accompanying the vacationing leader that the U.S. has “expressed our strong conviction” to Scottish officials that Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi (AHB’-dehl BAH’-seht AH’-lee ahl-meh-GRAH’-hee) should not remain free. The comments came on the first anniversary of Al-Megrahi’s release.

Brennan criticized what he termed the “unfortunate and inappropriate and wrong decision,” and added: “We’ve expressed our strong conviction that Al-Begrahi should serve out the remainder – the entirety – of his sentence in a Scottish prison.”

The original deal with Scotland that led to Megrahi’s trial in Scotland was the promise that any release would result in extradition to the US, where Megrahi could be tried for the murders of almost 200 Americans in that terrorist act. Obama and his State Department decided not to insist on Scotland meeting its obligations, only insisting that a release be based on “compassionate” consideration if contemplated at all, and that Megrahi remain in Scotland. Instead of insisting on extradition with a country that would actually extradite someone to the US, Obama apparently thinks that he can convince the man whose son gave Megrahi a hero’s welcome on his return to Libya to arrest Megrahi and send him back to Scotland or the US.

If there is a way to make the US look even more impotent in this situation, perhaps someone can explain it.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

1) Make firm decision
2) Stand by firm decision
3) Get criticized for firm decision
4) Stick finger in air
5) Realize that decision makes you look bad
6) Change your mind

“I MEANT TO DO THAT!”

rockbend on August 26, 2010 at 8:16 AM

Could’ve been worse. In a replay of his brilliant IOC bid, he could’ve hopped onto Air Force One and flown to Libya to make his request in person and expect to return in glorious triumph. (Bonus points for the CNN anchor going “Wha-wha-WHAT?” upon failure.)

Maybe someone could assert Megrahi’s rights to a fair trial of his peers and his God-given rights to freedom and do so with a bow just might take that cake….?

ted c on August 26, 2010 at 8:23 AM

Wouldn’t it be interesting to see some news stories about the 200 American victims?

Who were they? How old? What were they looking forward to that day? What were their hopes and dreams?

I remember the day of the Lockerbie terrorist attack. It was my first day of getting cable TV in my apartment so I got to see wall to wall coverage.

Those were the days when the democrat party knew it was wrong to root for the terrorists.

jeff_from_mpls on August 26, 2010 at 8:24 AM

(AHB’-dehl BAH’-seht AH’-lee ahl-meh-GRAH’-hee)

phonetic pronunciation synonomous with MURDERER

ted c on August 26, 2010 at 8:25 AM

What a fricking joke. I guess Obama was too busy packing his bags for law school when this occurred to be bothered with this carryover.

I gather that it was Reagan’s or Bush 41′s fault.

BuckeyeSam on August 26, 2010 at 8:25 AM

unwise decisions always have consequences. This is one of them.

ted c on August 26, 2010 at 8:26 AM

The analogy isn’t perfect, but this murder ought to be Obama’s Willie Horton. How could Obama fall asleep at this switch?

BuckeyeSam on August 26, 2010 at 8:28 AM

the people mourn….

our 200 dead at Lockerbie cry out from the grave….

and join the cacophony of 3,000 already screaming from the dusty hole that is ground zero.

This is another instance where Ø will admit to a mistake only if he can blame someone else for the mistake.

Having proven, time after time, that his administration is populated with incompetent “social engineers” full of “PC” platitudes and attitudes, we should expect the worst case outcome for anything Ø and “The Can’t Shoot Straight Gang” does.

Obama seriously believes that his Cairo speech really had an effect. Even most Americans tune him out now, and outside of Europe the rest of the world never bought what he was selling in the first place.

What better way to show how impotent ObaMao is. Unfortunately the emperor thought that the common folk were saying that he is important.

This “smart power” is winning Muslim minds everywhere, isn’t it?

onlineanalyst on August 26, 2010 at 9:02 AM

Apparently, O’s ace speechwriters hadn’t come up with the “boot on the neck” phrase yet.

BTW Is it true or just an Internet rumor that imam Rauf wrote (or had a strong hand in crafting craftily) the Cairo Speech?

“Can’t I just eat my crabcake.” Sounds as if he’s having a vacation from hell. Poopie in the pond, really bad storm, cooped up with the wife and kids. Tuesday can’t come soon enough so he can get behind the totus again.

To be fair, in certain dialects, “important” is pronounced the same as “impotent”.

Since the EPA wants to regulate lead bullets, maybe we can find a use for one in Libya. Don’t need to send in a drone, just a Marine/Seal sniper team.

barnone on August 26, 2010 at 9:35 AM

I’m glad this story is back in the news and hope it keeps making an appearance.
It is outrageous and indicative of the worldwide war with Islamic nutballs. This guy (and whoever helped him) successfully carries out a hell of an attack, spends a couple years in prison and is given a hero’s welcome home and a free pass to plot again.
Insane. Not the nutballs but the rest of us.
Obama could not be more impotent and, imo, complicit.

Would it be better if we dumped the Christian thing?

Chrissy was talking about all the love we will get if we let the Ground Zero neighborhood host a nice Muslim Center. I thought that The One was gonna make them love us. Has Chris ever been over there? Does he hang out or do deals with any Muslims? Yes, the left is mentally wired to hate Christianity then use selected precepts for their own purposes.

How about reading a history book?

Christian kindness probably helped Islam conquer the Eastern Roman Empire.

I have an idea to start a change in this nation.

Tell them they can build the Mosque (or Community Center or Barracks or whatever it is) near ground zero if we can crucify OBL, Megrahi and Gadahn in the area before they get approval. We need something to celebrate like they did the murder of our citizens.

It is not a Christian thing so the left will not hate us. We are just imitating the last empire that really kicked the crap out of the worse parts of Islam. And if we change enough, we can win this thing.

How about: “Come on fellows, I’m buying shrimp here!” When asked about Iraq.
That says it all to me. He could care less about our troops, he’s on vacation. Too bad our troops can’t take a vacation.
Which reminds me, why don’t the Generals call a strike if their troops can’t get to vote? I would suspend all movement until they are assured that they will have the vote. Can you imagine, our troops might not be able to do that!!!!

I find it incredilous that -

This Obama WH fumbled (and has been fumbling) every single hot potato issue they encountered, all we get and all they’ll do is to feed the friendly media type some crap of ‘poor dudgements’ and ‘bad decisions’. And that is that. End of story. They are no longer expecting to be held responsible.

“What more do you want from us?” The admission of ‘making a mistake’ even though it is really not their fault is like dolling out cake crumbs to the passants as royal favor or something.

American public can only have impotent anger, and hoping the next batch of clowns they vote in will be ‘better’.
