Upset in Alaska?

posted at 8:35 am on August 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

If the Republican primary for US Senate in Alaska became an extension of the battle between the Murkowskis and Sarah Palin, it looks as though the underdog may have won again.  Palin-endorsed challenger Joe Miller was not given much of a chance of victory against incumbent Lisa Murkowski before yesterday’s vote, but this morning Miller has a three-point lead with 77% of precincts reporting.  Murkowski can still pull out a win, but the mathematics are getting increasingly difficult:

In what could become one of the biggest political upsets of the year, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski trailed her tea party-backed opponent by a small margin Wednesday in Alaska’s GOP primary with thousands of votes yet to be counted.

Attorney Joe Miller, who also had the backing of former Gov. Sarah Palin, led Murkowski by less than four points with 77 percent of precincts reporting and thousands of absentee ballots not yet added to the tally from Tuesday’s vote.

If Murkowski loses, she would become the third senator this year to be ousted by a primary challenger. Her defeat would also be one of the most stunning losses in the state’s short 51-year history and a sure sign that Palin’s endorsement still carries weight with voters in Alaska.

Not a single public poll showed Miller within striking distance of Murkowski in the weeks before the primary, and she spent more than ten times as much as he spent. However, a ballot measure requiring parental notifications for teens seeking an abortion boosted Miller by driving tens of thousands of voters to the polls in an otherwise low-turnout primary.

When Shira Toeplitz notes that no poll predicted this outcome, it’s not an exaggeration.  Palin’s endorsement of Miller was seen as a long shot, as well as another volley in a years-long political feud between Palin and the Murkowskis.  Few people gave the endorsement much chance of changing the status quo, especially since Murkowski didn’t have a record that produced anywhere near as much ire among conservatives as Palin’s former running mate John McCain — who won his primary by 30 points.

If Miller wins this race, it’s a testament to the power of Palin in Alaska and the energy of the Tea Party.  It may also be a warning to pollsters to start making some adjustments to likely-voter models in the days ahead.  We’ll keep an eye on the outcome of this race today.

Update: According to ADN at 8:21 ET, Miller leads Murkowski 51.09% to 48.91%, with 429 out of 438 precincts reporting.  He still has to win absentee ballots or keep the margin small enough to prevail.   Murkowski blames Palin:

Murkowski on Tuesday night took a shot at Palin, saying that when Palin resigned as governor last summer she said she would use her new national role to help out Alaska.

“I think she’s out for her own self-interest. I don’t think she’s out for Alaska’s interest,” Murkowski said as she waited at her campaign headquarters for results to come in.

Update II: From the same article, this looks like it could be a while before a winner is declared:

The final results of the race won’t be known for over a week. The Alaska Division of Elections said over 16,000 absentee ballots were requested and as of Monday night 7,600 had been returned. The first count of absentees will be next Tuesday and there will be two subsequent counts as the absentee votes trickle in on Sept. 3 and on Sept. 8.

That two-point difference amounts to just under 2,000 votes.  Assuming that lead holds up, Murkowski would have to win 4800 of the absentees, or about 63%, in order to make up the difference.  That’s a tall order, even if Miller’s surge came late.

Update III: Via commenter the_nile, Slate may have to do a little egg-wiping from its face today:

On Tuesday, in her home state, Sarah Palin’s favorite will probably get trounced. Joe Miller is widely expected to lose by a large margin to incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary—an embarrassing defeat for the former governor, who has endorsed Miller, but also to Miller’s other major backer, the Tea Party Express.

Miller was a virtual unknown when he announced his Senate candidacy in April. But his big political debut came in June when both Palin and the Tea Party Express endorsed him. Miller sounds like he came out of some kind of Tea Party laboratory, with degrees from West Point and the University of Alaska, a Bronze Star from fighting in the Gulf War, and “correct” positions on guns, abortion, God, and big government (for, against, for, and against, respectively). Miller even has the right look: With a long, lean face, and stubble closer to 10 o’clock than 5, he could almost pass for Chuck Norris.

Unfortunately for him, not even Chuck Norris in his most bad-ass role—which is, of course, Chuck Norris in real life—could rescue the Miller campaign. Always a long shot, Miller lags behind Murkowski, the heir to one of Alaska’s political dynasties, by double digits.

Not even Chuck Norris could rescue Alexandra Gutierrez from her embarrassing defeat this morning.  It appears that Alaskans actually do care about fiscal responsibility at the federal level, regardless of Gutierrez’ charming display of patronization.

Why Joe Miller is doing the unexpected:

1. He’s a good candidate and articulated his stance on issues well.

2. People are sick and tired of political dynasties and squishy RINO’s.

3. The Tea Party got heavily involved.

4. Palin supported Miller.

Not dismissing it completely but not attributing it as the main reason. That is of course my opinion but I’m willing to see if more info comes out from any voter interviews that occurred.

I think you have a point, but it is moot.

She put him on the map. Then he had an audience. They liked what they heard.

Bottom line?

Powerful endorsement credentials.

Period.

I have attended Tea Parties and I like Gov. Palin. Not to the point as others but I like her. I am suggesting that you would never give Gov. Palin any credit for anything. And just as a heads up, I don’t think using Jon Stewart as a frame of reference for anything is a great idea.

Cindy Munford on August 25, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Fair enough. As I think I’ve said before I see you as objective which I like. As for Palin my criticism of her is driven more by what I think is good for the party as a whole. In any role except as pres contender there is a lot of good she could do.
As for Stewart, he does bring up some discrepancies from many pols on both sides. That I like. That said, I wouldn’t jump onto his views anymore than I would with Maddow, Rush and the other big names out there.

what the Miller result should show to the GOp elites is that when Palin and the tea Party are on the same page with a great canidate they are toast.

Look for more efforts to drive a wedge between _Palin and the tea party in the coming days and weeks. the GOP elite can not afford to have Palin and the tea party form into one force to challange their status quo.

the whole the tea party should not have a national leader is simply an attempt by both the GOp elite to attempt to co-opt the Tea party for their own ends.

When I grew up in Alaska the the Republicans up there had a vision for Alaska. Why spend our treasure when Stevens, Murkowski & Don Young can spend yours?

Well, where has that gotten them? ANWR is still sealed off & logging in the Tongass National Forest has been decimated (was in Ketchikan when pulp mill shut down). Basically you can’t open up any new industry in that state without asking the Federal Government for permission.

Sounds like a new generation of conservatives in Alaska are sending a clear message to the Oligarchs of Juneau. Every dollar of pork that they take will eventually cost them an ounce of their own sovereignty. Get used to it, there’s no money the US is broke and the conservatives there are slowly starting to realize that. Good to see it.

Huh?

She makes it sound like only Tea Partiers find degrees from West Point and Bronze Stars an attractive feature.

Also, last I checked, most Americans (especially Alaskans) are for guns, God, and against big government.

On abortion Americans are divided, but that’s not even a tea party position.

Sounds more like she’s complaining that Miller isn’t what she wants, and somehow thinks that means nobody should want him. (I still don’t get her objection to West Point and Bronze Stars though).

Question for Katie Couric: What is Sarah Palin reading this morning?

Answer: Alaska Senate Primary results

Follow Up Question: Do more people vote in Alaska or watch the CBS Network News with Katie Couric?

Guess the LameStreamMedia meme that the TeaParty is toothless and Sarah Palin’s clout is over-rated will have to be replaced with a new meme.

Likely New LSM Meme: Teaparty Cannibals feed on their own moderates in Alaska Senate Primary and Florida Governor Primary.

Cindy Munford on August 25, 2010 at 10:42 AM

I understand that POV. however the fact that all the GOP elites are saying the same thing makes me think differently.

I would not like to see a “leader” that wants to control the movement but I would like to see a “leader” that defends the movement, who can rally the movement, and can focus the movement like a laser when needed. the day to day fundraising, the local politcal movements, the gressroots appeal shouls IMO stay leaderless and grassroots. but by allowing the Tea party to stay directionless we are allowing it to be used and abused by every politican for their purpose not ours. We are also setting the stage for the dems to run fake tea party canidates as 3rd party canidates to give them an easier time in the general.

I would like to see some type of leadership akin to the Articles of Confederation. a lossly based group of independent groups all working towards the same result with a couple of national leaders as figureheads protecting and nudging the movement along

So next time AllahPundit and Ed Morrissey say that Republicans should ONLY focus on economic issues–as if they should not walk and chew gum at the same time– we should take it with a grain of salt.

It will be interesting to watch how this evolves. Look at the concerted effort made by the Left, the media (but I repeat myself) and establishment Republicans to denigrate the movement. No, I think worse than denigrate, they have tried to destroy it. For me, the way a candidate or politician treats the Tea Party is a barometer of their sincerity and their allegiance to the Beltway.

Cindy Munford on August 25, 2010 at 11:01 AM

Palin is right and is demonstrating leadership. She is helping where it matters, not merely yelping like a Huckabee or doing a little tour like Mittens. She’s getting out and get’n ‘er done. If she has beknighted a new SEN Millar, a GOV Haley and several others that take office in January, then the road is wide open for her and she’s going to floor the gas pedal and not let up until she rams the WH gates. The debates are going to be incredible.

Ryewall’s insecurities really stem from the fear AK will annex Canada and take over those oil fields. I wonder how he rationalizes his global warming obsessions with oil sales making up so much of Canada’s GDP.

Murkowski would have to win 4800 of the absentees, or about 63%, in order to make up the difference.

Let’s hope the majority of absentees voted for the veteran, as from the Military.

5. And a red tide is rising.

Though liberals and the media are quick to call the Tea Party over with any loss for their candidates, Sarah Palin’s endorsement record is more wins than losses. Though not all Tea Party candidates made it out of the primaries, the movement has been a force, firing up voters, and forcing most Republicans to lean right to woo their vote.

Conservatives are getting educated and energized. There’s new blood and new life in the GOP. Take a look at Lt. Col (Ret.) Allen West, the new Republican nominee for Florida House District 22 endorsed by Palin. West is a dynamo, a fearsome warrior who quotes classic Greek with a warm, Southern charm. Put this guy on the watch list for future stars of the GOP.

In his acceptance speech Tuesday, West said, “We have crossed the Rubicon,” an allusion to Julius Caesar’s invasion of Ancient Rome.

Indeed.

The prelims are over and legions are now ready to do battle in November.

Who to believe believe on the effect Palin had on Miller’s campaign?

Bradky or the candidate himself?

Miller credited the support of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for his lead.

“I’m absolutely certain that was pivotal,” he said.

inspectorudy on August 25, 2010 at 12:22 PM

rubio is a Jeb bush boytoy. This is my problem with the tea party not having a national leader. it allows people like Scott Brown, Mitt and Jeb to use and abuse the tea party. To triangluate to the center once elections are won.

Don’t get me worng I like Rubio but I understand what he is and where he is coming form so I’m not disappointed by this. his failure to embrace Palin when she offered her help to him showed me his true colors so this comes as no surprise. he will be better than Crist but no one should look at him as a joe miller or sharron angle tpye of canididate.

It actually includes this priceless sentence: “When Joe Miller loses the primary”…

Weigel and his kin are leftist scum. I still can’t believe Ed defended him when he was outed as a journolister.

Some of the absentee ballots will be for the Democrat primary; I would think at least 1/3? Murkowski’s task will be even a bit more difficult.

for the good of the party Lisa should concede like handel did for Deal. It’s time to heal the rifts and the moderates need to accept the voter desire for a more conservative canididate in AK.

there is no reason for Lisa to stay in the race. Unless of course the fix is in and the establishment are printing off ballots as we speak. she can not win from the math at the monet. she should concede now and let miller prepare for the general.

Did you ever read the book “Brave New World”? It talks about how propaganda conditions people’s responses, but doesn’t necessarily change their core beliefs.

After years of incessant conditioning, many people hear the name “Obama,” and feel a warm fuzzy safe feeling. Other people year “Sarah Palin,” and rage as if they had just been stuck by a cattle prod. That’s the conditioned response at work. And when those same people see Obama or Palin on a poll, they tend to react in the kneejerk fashion to which they have been conditioned.

But COATTAILS don’t work that way. Even when Clinton’s poll numbers were high, his appearance in a Democrat candidate’s campaign had the same effect as throwing an anchor to a swimmer. And Obama is even more poisonous to his “allies.”

But George Bush, even when his poll numbers were tanking, always gave a boost to the candidates he endorsed. And Sarah Palin is having an even greater and more positive effect.

And there is a REASON for all of that.

She’s not at Salon, she’s is the news director at KUCB in Unalaska, Alaska & also former associate Web editor of The American Prospect.

Her boyfriend Dave Weigel, just got nailed by Jim Treacher for failing to disclose the pertinent fact of their personal relationship while lamely defending her in Slate today against all the snarking on her for allowing her severe anti-Palin bias compromise the integrity of her work.

Speaking of compromised integrity, check out this article by her at American Prospect for even more pathetically off-base anti-Palin prognostication than her piece in Slate which now makes her look like a drooling at the mouth idiot completely oblivious to her surroundings.
