Romney to launch 25-state tour, showcase more easygoing side
posted at 9:14 pm on August 24, 2010 by Allahpundit
Is this what he needs to salve the wound from RomneyCare? More denim?
But the most dramatic re invention may be a stylistic one: Romney is seeking to come across as more easygoing and accessible than the formally dressed, perfectly coiffed, carefully rehearsed candidate of the last campaign.
“Mitt is doing a better job at low-keying it,’’ said Steve Duprey, a former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party who supported McCain in 2008 and was a vocal Romney critic at the time. “He would be wise to stay with it right through a presidential primary.’’
New Hampshire is the place Romney’s advisers and allies say they see Mitt at rest: a wearer of jeans and driver of a black 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup truck. Some of them are hoping that Romney’s laid-back summer lifestyle will survive Labor Day and endure onto the campaign trail, helping to erase the impression many voters have had of a wealthy candidate almost animatronically focused on winning…
In early July, Romney marched in [New Hampshire's] Wolfeboro’s Fourth of July parade in jeans and a checked shirt, his hair tousled, a combination that became something of a uniform on his spring book tour. A few days later, he invited national and local political reporters to his Wolfeboro home for an off-the-record barbecue.
Follow the link up top and scroll down to the very end for some humor about his now semi-famous appearance at a fundraiser driving a pick-up truck a la Scott Brown. His strategy is clear now, in case there was any doubt before (which there wasn’t, really): Ignore Iowa, where he probably can’t win anyway, and focus on using New Hampshire as a momentum-builder for South Carolina and Florida. It’s hard to see any major rival like Huck or Palin topping him in NH; some mavericky dark horse like Mitch Daniels or Thune would have to emerge and then spend serious time and money there to build a groundswell. The new laid-back persona is, I take it, also aimed squarely at New Hampshire voters, as they have a rep for preferring “outsider” types to machine politicians (although, with the exception of McCain over Dubya in 2000, I’m not sure why). Good enough, grassroots conservatives? C’mon. He’s trying.

I am so sorry to hear of your plight. These tragedies are being played out all over the country, and unnecessary. I don’t want you to misunderstand part of my post:
Mittens uses that as another cloak, to disguise what he is. He’s ruling class, believing in no Constitution, and having no gods above money and the international country-club. I’m sure he enjoyed the Mormon issue whipped up by Huckster, too. It gave him the cloak of religiosity, to help win votes in that sphere.
Small businessmen are the backbone of a free America, and the likes of Romney and the corporatists would rather it go away.
Best wishes, Key West Reader.

Mitt’s gubernatorial flyer in support of gays will be abused TIME AND TIME AGAIN (in true leftist hypocritical fashion) to demonize him.
The chameleon has nowhere to hide. No fabric can hide his opportunism.
The Left is ITCHING for a Romney run. Point. blank. period.

Yup, thats what us dumb conservatives needs is a guy all dressed up in genes and gettin his hair messed up by his hairdresser to convince us he’s the authentic real sure as shucks deal.
New Hampshire? Oh and a pickup too with leather seats and stuff. Who the Huck kares we conservatives doesn’t goes for liberal easterners pickin our candidates for us unless its Juan Mccain of course.
Mitt walkin in a parade that does it for me cept he skipped Iowa.
Why wasn’t he around glad handin the Good Old Boy Party apparachucks like Neut and Plenty and sanitorium? Dang we likes our butt kisser uppers here in Ioway.
How about someone genuine with principles that don’t change daily dependin on who their talkin too and secure enough to transcend party and do the right thing?

Ruling class.
Part of a Beltway-loving, Ivy League-educated, Statist-embracing bureaucrat functionary élite par excellence.
And a flip-flopper to boot!

I love the repetition of the nonsense of the previous story about a prop pickup truck despite that the quoted material right above points out that is his regular vehicle and most likely has been since 2003. No one else in this fact-free bashing thread could spot this OBVIOUS anti-factual narrative? Fake but accurate!
Readjust your blinders for a second and you would realize all that this news story is, is an admission that the media narrative about him from the last election is over, having completed its purpose of making sure that the social conservatives refused to vote for the most economically conservative candidate in the last election.
Do you get it yet?
Resolute on August 24, 2010 at 11:44 PM
It’s not about his bloody truck!
It’s about his constant flip-flops on everything he has ever stood for.
Assault Weapons Ban
Gay Rights
Disastrous Mass. economy

And you should all know who I support now.

Passed on Romney in 2008 and in 2012 like him even less and don’t think I am alone. Just say NO to any candidate who ran in 2008 that couldn’t beat McCain in the primary!
PhiKapMom on August 25, 2010 at 12:21 AM
You do realize, this means war.
If Romney thinks he can win the GOP nomination without carrying the South, he’s dreaming a foolish dream.
This strategy will be his DOOM, if he is silly enough to actually try it. As any conservative knows, if you are going to win the Presidency, you must have the South in a solid red block. For a real conservative, the South is your natural base. That is why Romney doesn’t play well down here in Dixie, because people don’t quite know what he believes. Palin, however is as clear as anyone can be.
People appreciate that kind of direct honesty, especially when you are honestly agreeing with them to begin with.
I’ll make ya a deal.
In the 2012 primaries, Romney can “de-emphasize” the South, and Palin will fight him tooth and nail everywhere there is an election.
How you think that will work out for him?
If she runs, she isn’t going to skip anywhere. If he wants NH, he’ll have to fight her for it all the way. Same goes for Iowa and all the rest of them, Michigan included.
Brian1972 on August 25, 2010 at 12:30 AM
Oh yeah! That 25 state tour is just what the Dr. ordered. Romney needs to show off his “easygoing” because the first thing I think of when Mitt Romney’s name pops up is 100% right wing badass.

gary4205 on August 25, 2010 at 12:50 AM
She’s STILL pissed that McCain pulled out of Michigan in 2008!
You can bet your last dollar she will fight for every vote in every state. Few are better at retail politics.
Wait ’til she gets Willard and the rest of the GOP losers in a debate. There will be blood on the floor.
Willard especially is vulnerable, because he has literally held every single position on every subject, depending on the crowd he was in front of at the time.
Romney makes John Kerry, who served in Vietnam, look principled!
There’s only one we can trust to do the right thing. We all know who she is.
gary4205 on August 25, 2010 at 1:09 AM
Actually, you do.
Who would “he” be?
Because I can’t think of a single man in the GOP field who honors the Constitution in all things.
Jenfidel on August 25, 2010 at 1:25 AM
You’re crazy if you think Palin is dedicated to the Constitution in the tradition of our Founding Fathers.
Supports the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which have not been declared by Congress? Check.
Supported the bailout? Check.
Supports the function and purpose of the Fed? Check.
Supports the Patriot Act? Check.
Supports federal prohibition of drugs? Check.
Supports federal funding for education? Check.
Supports the Department of Homeland Security? Check.
Supports the imprisonment of terrorist “suspects” without bail or trial? Check.
Supports portions of the welfare state, in principle (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid)? Check.
I’m sorry, but she is no constitutional conservative.
There was (and will be) only one candidate who is truly dedicated to the Constitution in the tradition of our Founding Fathers.
iamse7en on August 25, 2010 at 1:34 AM
You can’t possibly be that clueless.
There’s only one man in all of Congress that honors the Constitution in all things.
iamse7en on August 25, 2010 at 1:37 AM
Please. He couldn’t even beat a bumbling, lukewarm Gran’pa McCain, two years ago.
Kent18 on August 25, 2010 at 1:42 AM
Guess you were thinking of Ryan, Pence, Boehner or even my Congressman-Pete Sessions.
Lots of good Constitutional conservative Republican Congresspersons.
Sorry, but Congressmen can’t get elected President.
President Palin can get Michele Bachmann to be her VP, though.

stupid mitt. By concentrating on NH his “home state” it makes Nh meaningless and a good showing by Palin makes that the story not a Mitt win. and if by some chance Mitt loses NH he is finished.

How many posts before you brought his religion up? It’s ok to have a “muslim loving pres”, but we have to watch those Mormons, after all you know how many people they beheaded! It’s that exact reason we have such a loser in the oval office. It’s that reason we had a loser like McCain running. (I honor his military service and all the horrors he went through as a prisoner of war, but not as a potus). We have to get over this and pick the best person who can beat the “o” in office, or this country is doomed. I don’t support anyone at this moment, but we better get behind whomever, or wave bye to our country.
Bambi on August 25, 2010 at 9:08 AM
Will anyone notice?
molonlabe28 on August 25, 2010 at 10:34 AM
I’m with Bambi. My least favorite candidate would be Huckabee(he’d be a loser to Obama)but if the Republicans picked him he’d still get my vote. Obama is a secret Muslim and a Marxist. Two totalitarian philosophies rolled up into one, the perfect storm if you will. If Obamalinsky gets through to a second term you can pretty much bet this Republic will be handed over to the UN and the 57 states(sound familiar?) of the OIC(the 57 muslim countries)which are taking control of the UN more by the day. So anybody saying “I won’t vote for Palin” or “I won’t vote for Mittens”, I don’t know what to say. As for Mitt flip-flopping, I give him some leeway in that he was a Republican running one of the most liberal states. Anyone in that position would have been flip flopping to stay alive politically. Vote ABO(Anybody but Obama) The survival of the Republic is at stake. This is the closest America has ever been to being conquered, from within no less. Kruschev was right, “We will crush you”. Only if we allow it…..
