Game over: McCain crushes Hayworth

posted at 11:33 pm on August 24, 2010 by Allahpundit

With just one of 15 counties reporting, Maverick already has twice as many votes as J.D. The AP throws in the towel:

McCain spent more than $20 million to beat back an aggressive challenge from Hayworth, who relentlessly attacked the senator for his shifting stance on immigration and sought to tap into the anti-incumbent rage that has taken down other lawmakers in 2010…

Will he work with Democrats again? Will he play a role in immigration legislation? Will he be Obama’s chief nemesis?

“My guess is that he will move back a little bit to trying to be a consensus builder, someone who will try to bring Democrats and Republicans together,” said Bruce Merrill, a former pollster and McCain staffer who was surprised by the senator’s sudden move to the right. “I hope so.”

I can’t believe, in this year of all years, we couldn’t find a better challenger for McCain than this guy. It’s 60/29 as I write this. What a travesty.

Anyhoo, so it’s lookin’ like John’s big plan for retirement is to either die in office or pull a Murkowski and give his seat to his equally gracious Meg.

That’s stupid talk. I mean seriously stupid talk.

You can bet your ass McCain will fight Obama tooth and nail. Remember, he holds a grudge, and not only is he mad Obama beet him in 2008, but mad at the smart ass remarks Obama has thrown his way since.

Lets not forget how he treated W out of pure spite. This will be worse.

This is my whole point Cync…at this time the person should be way far ahead, way well-known and super-supported. Sorta like Sarah Palin was when she was the VP nominee (and I mean in the vein of having strong GOP support as a strong conservative…I am well versed on how some love her here and some hate her…)

Instead, we have peeps talking about Romney. Huckaphonie and Newt Gingrich. C’mon! Look at what ZerObama has wrought and we still have crickets!

I like Rick Santorum, but I reckon that won’t fly…even with ZerObama!

Gob on August 25, 2010 at 12:27 AM

Chill out brother. Reagan was like a billion to one shot on 1978, and went on to win in a landslide.

It is WAY too early to worry about 2012.

I’ll say this, we KNOW Romney, Gingrich, and Huckabee are losers. Past that, there is little else to say.

Mr_Magoo on August 25, 2010 at 1:43 AM

Well, on the bright side…. Every time McCain stabs the GOP (and all sane citizens) in the back, I’ll be able to brag :

“I told you so.”

Who was the sage who said that “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result’? Well, that is the McCain voter for ya.

LegendHasIt on August 25, 2010 at 1:43 AM

Been saying for months Hayworth didn’t have a chance in hell. We Arizonans would never elect a buffoon like Hayworth US Senator–no matter how much we dislike McCain. Was never going to happen.

kit9 on August 25, 2010 at 1:43 AM

No. If I vote for McCain then I am hurting what we are all fighting for. He will reach across the aisle and cave in to everything the Democrats want, because this is his last hurrah…there is no way he will run again in six years, and his voting record won’t matter. He will only hurt the conservative and Republican causes.

JannyMae on August 25, 2010 at 12:42 AM

If you’re going to *waste a vote* then you should vote Libertarian, I’m fairly certain y’all have one on the ballot for Nov, instead of voting for McCain. I didn’t vote for Dole in ’96, voted for Harry Brown (who isn’t great) instead. I knew Dole was going to win my state, but wasn’t going to win, so I went with the third party that most closely represented my views. I wouldn’t vote for Perot since he gave us Clinton. And till McCain picked SP I was seriously considering doing it again, I dislike him that much.

However, I still don’t think Hayworth was a serious challenger to McCain. He’s a doofus, and AZ was ill served by having to pick between the two of them.

Rocks on August 25, 2010 at 1:45 AM

However, I’m not going to pull a Katy and wish a Democratic victory over McCain.

blatantblue on August 25, 2010 at 1:15 AM

Yes, agreed, I’d never use that voting method — vote for a Democrat out of some sense of vengeance or whatever.

But back in about, say, 2006 or thereabouts, when McCain announced his political positions for a possible Presidential run (which occurred), I lined these positions up against Hillary Clinton’s and they were nearly indistinguishable (McCain’s to Hillary Clinton’s). They differed on abortion/right-to-life and that was about it, as to voting and issue records.

Even McCain used that shared relationship with Hillary Clinton as a badge of goodness, as a selling point for himself. He boasted, in other words, as to how nearly indistinguishable he was from Hillary Clinton.

This sort of politic MAY “work” for Independents and the alleged “moderate Democrat” (who I do not believe exist, but some do), this indistinguishable appeal such that they then vote for purely cosmetic or fan-appeal reasons, but, for MOST people among the GOP, this sort of behavior just proves a sell-out, and it actually discourages some on the Right from even voting.

This is the process that the CAGOP deploys election after election, running a Democrat who claims to be a Republican against a Democrat who claims to be a Democrat, and the options are very narrow as to what will then be elected: both candidates so Leftwing and similar that there’s no appeal to anyone except the Left and the Far Left.

So, I place McCain in that Left category and agree that he isn’t too distinguishable from Hillary Clinton (who I’d never vote for but my point is voting for McCain doesn’t seem too different from a Hillary vote and even McCain seems to be proud of that).

So, I don’t know what options even exist lately. I realize why some people think that a vote for the opponent might send some political message to the GOP to knock-off these Democrats-as-Republicans candidates, but the voting option is, rather, futile…so I agree with ya’.

Lourdes on August 25, 2010 at 1:47 AM

MCCAIN, JOHN – R 57.2%
HAYWORTH, J.D. – R 31.2%
DEAKIN, JIM – R 11.6%

I still say Deakin is showing respectable numbers. I had him at 3-5%. That’s 43% anti-McVain votes. Someone needs to make a billboard of that.

Of course, if he clobbers his next opponent, we’re toast. He’ll drape himself in the Mexican flag!

I supported McCain, Hayworth was just a disaster, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little worried he’ll pull a 180 right away.

Still, he is the type of guy to hold grudges and I think he’ll enjoy being a thorn in Obama’s side through 2012, so hopefully we got a reliable vote until then.

Daemonocracy on August 25, 2010 at 2:01 AM

I am not a McCain fan. I agree, we should have been able to find someone better to challenge him than that clown Hayworth.

crosspatch on August 25, 2010 at 2:02 AM

He actually SAID in the last election that we “don’t have to fear an Obama Presidency” when asked how HE, McCain, was planning to defeat Obama — seems to me that McCain’s entire candidacy was for purposes of getting Obama elected (honestly, I wonder about this).

I frankly think he was just trying to be polite, albeit stupidly. I mean, on the other hand, what sort of ads do you give the DNC if you go:

“YES WE MUST FEAR OBAMA!” It’s very easy to propose what one would say after or before the fact, but on one’s feet it is different.

blatantblue on August 25, 2010 at 1:17 AM

No, no, McCain wasn’t making an independent declaration there, he was making a wretchedly undercutting retort to a Republican voter who tried expressing her concerns about the state of the election at that stage.

Instead of showing some respect to the Republican voter, and there were (you know this by now) so many millions more like her so the lady was expressing what a huge number of us on the Right were sensing at that time (that McCain would lose, that Obama was going to win, that the results afterward would be horrible for our nation and they have been)…anyway, when this voter expressed her doubts, McCain chastised HER with “you don’t have to fear an Obama presidency.”

It was him being a loser. What he SHOULD have said (and what would have helped toward a GOP win even then because Palin was so enthusiastically supported by then), was that we deserved so much better, etc. He could have sold himself from a positive position and the GOP as so much more supportable than Obama/Demos, but, no, he actually used a critical tone TO THE VOTER WHO ASKED THE QUESTION.

It was such a cowardly response by McCain, such a let-down, so under-cutting, so lacking in support for the GOP voters. It was McCain being classically snotty and condescending and dismissive of so many Americans at that moment, shocking, just disrespectable.

cynccook on August 25, 2010 at 2:15 AM

The truth is that McCain is a squishy moderate. The saving grace in this, his last term, will be that the mood of the country has turned conservative. If you thought he had activated full rino powers for the campaign, just wait and see what he’ll be like after the Republicans take back the House and make gains in the Senate in November. He’ll happily squish over to the Right, as he has been doing all year. It may not feel like justice that he’s still going to be sitting in the Senate, but his true moderate inclinations should be pretty well neutralized.

cynccook on August 25, 2010 at 2:20 AM

I don’t understand this vote, other than some instinct to go with the devil you know. Hayworth has his faults, but from this distance, McCain’s record looks like a lead albatross.

These lifers have no right to such power over an entire nation. That’s what makes term limits so attractive.

The grip of the ruling class won’t be loosened so easily.

Feedie on August 25, 2010 at 2:28 AM

Ugh. They’re going to eventually have to shovel McCain’s stinking corpse out of his Senate office aren’t they?

Great. I wonder when he’ll do his eventual shift to the left and start bitching at conservatives again.

memomachine on August 25, 2010 at 2:42 AM

Even though there will be a likely Republican landslide in November, I believe that a Hayworth candidacy would have put Arizona in play for the Democrats in November. I don’t know why there is such bitterness here about JD’s loss–outside of this blog NOBODY thought Hayward’s chances were any greater than Dennis Kucinich running for the presidency.

Do you know AZ politics at all? In GOP straw polls and in regular phone polls, JD was either tied or beating McCain. McCain in response started spending money on ads just lambasting JD. JD wasn’t even looking at running at that point. In response, JD decided to run. Without JD, absolutely NO ONE would have ran against McCain.

Why? Because McCain let all the players in AZ politics know that he had a 20 million dollar war chest and he was going to use it to play dirty. You know, the exact opposite how he played with Obama.

McCain is not my choice for much of anything but, it should be remembered, that he voted against the nomination of BOTH Sotomayor and Kagan. Thus, if for no other reason, it is nice to have another senator who will probably vote against Obama’s next SCOTUS pick.He also has a good voting record on Iraq and Afghanistan.

MaiDee on August 25, 2010 at 12:31 AM

WoW! He cast a vote that amounted to a hill of beans. I’m impressed….NOT!

That SoB McCain casted votes that hurt us too. TARP was McCain, so was the Gang of 14 that meant that Estrada isn’t a judge. This isn’t to mention his vote to violate the 1st Amendment, against that Oath he took.

Hayworth was a tool. In 6 years he retires and Brewer walks away with it as Arizona’s next political institution.

galenrox on August 24, 2010 at 11:44 PM

You better hope not. She raised taxes by 18%, gave tons of money to education (mostly pension and various slush funds), refused to cut BS government spending and cut money on all the important stuff. She signed 1070, but refused to send down troops and properly secure the border.

Oh and for all her claims about preserving funding for education, PUHSD basically didn’t hire any teachers this year, and many districts actually cut all their first year teachers. My niece is in a class for 47 students. Tell me again, where did that money go to support education? Brewer paid off the unions and the establishment.

I voted for Buzz today.

Oh and Brewer never could have gotten elected. She was defaulted into the job when Nappy left and she was looking to lose in the primary, when 1070 fell into her lap and she ran with it. She’s a career politician and nothing better. She’s been in government since 1983 and it shows in her policies.

How much money did any of these whiners raise to get Shaddegg or Flake into the race? NONE! Hayworth is a big spender, ear-marker with close ties to corrupt lobbyists, failed to comply with federal election laws, promoted “birtherism” and other nutty theories, and is prone to say something embarrassingly stupid at any given moment.

Chudi on August 25, 2010 at 3:05 AM

Really, I know I’m justified. So I won’t fear that.

Look at the facts. Would the world have been better off if Mao died in WWII? Absolutely.

Would our society have been better off if McCain did not return home in exchange for one of other other patriots?

He violated the Constitution’s 1st Amendment. He said he is proud of harming our freedoms and slapping our Founding Father’s in the face. I doubt one of our other servicemen would have violated their oath in the way that John McCain violated his oath in passing that law.

I doubt one of our other servicemen would have voted to burden our children and our grandchildren with 800 billion dollars in debt about 20 months ago. John McCain voted to steal money from little children when he voted for TARP. That is the mark of an evil man (Yes, every other politician that votes to continue Social Security is evil for stealing more money from our little children).

I can honestly say I have never stolen from children, nor have worked to violate the Constitution. Both are things that John McCain can’t claim to have NOT done. Both are evil acts.

Tim Burton on August 25, 2010 at 3:23 AM

At least, the McCain-supported candidate for County Attorney lost against the Arpaio-backed candidate. Not only is McCain’s candidate corrupt, his challenger Bill Montgomery is strongly principaled. It is being categorized as a huge upset–I supported him and volunteered, so I wasn’t shocked.

JackofNoTrades on August 25, 2010 at 3:40 AM

How much money did any of these whiners raise to get Shaddegg or Flake into the race? NONE! Hayworth is a big spender,

No worse than John McCain. TARP was 800 billion, that’s more than all of JD’s earmarks combined and ever will be.

ear-marker with close ties to corrupt lobbyists,

Ear marks aren’t evil, if you don’t understand that, then you shouldn’t be commenting.

JD’s ties were no more than McCain’s ties to the Keating 5, less in fact.

Also, you seem to forgot that McCain led one of the investigations and never saw fit to bring JD in for questioning, then when McCain needed to win an election threw up JD’s ties to him as being unethical, when McCain didn’t see it as being unethical in the investigation.

failed to comply with federal election laws,

Show the charges that he did. It’s a crime to violate election laws, he wasn’t charged. Few mistakes, but no worse than McCain’s election law violations.

promoted “birtherism” and other nutty theories,

No, he just kept asking for documentation of anything on Obama. I actually listened to his show (before Levin started) and he never said that Obama wasn’t eligible for being POTUS. He just kept saying that Obama has no paper trail. Grades, BC, admission records, thesis….Nothing.

and is prone to say something embarrassingly stupid at any given moment.

As if McCain doesn’t. He said Obama was a fine man and we had nothing to fear from an Obama Presidency. If that isn’t an embarrassingly stupid gaffe, I don’t know what is.

Also, I’ve seen McCain blow his top, not pretty.`
`

Unless you are dishonest or nutty yourself, why support Hayworth?

Because Hayworth never worked so diligently to violate the Constitution. McCain did.

Hayworth never voted to give 800 billion to a slush fund.

Hayworth never voted to give illegals amnesty and chain migration, which not only would destroy this Republic, but it would destroy our party.

Besides, he never had the slightest chance – don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.

Adjoran on August 25, 2010 at 3:16 AM

Then you don’t know AZ politics. He was tied with JD in ever straw poll and phone poll. McCain started to attack him and spent $20 million dollars attacking him. If McCain would have had only $3 million, the race would have been close if not won by JD.

I would get a robocall 3-4 times a week about how evil JD was.

If it was never going to be close and JD had no chance, explain why McCain needed to spend $20 million dollars on this election?

That’s right, STFU and go home….

Tim, I didn’t know about the robocalls. Of course, my home phone, which I use for my alarm, kept ringing. I don’t answer that phone so didn’t know why it kept ringing. It’s been amazingly quiet tonight.

JackofNoTrades on August 25, 2010 at 3:45 AM

YES, MONTGOMERY WON. I was at his celebration tonight. Got high-fived when the early voting results came in.

Everybody was asking why no democrat was running, I had to remind everyone that Romley was the Democrat candidate.

JackofNoTrades on August 25, 2010 at 3:46 AM

Not by McCain. Okay that is cold, but . . .

It is disappointing. Hayworth’s ego is apparently even bigger than his head. Some people know they carry too much baggage for a political effort. Hayworth should have known and stayed out, but no.

Deakins was a far better anti-establishment candidate and regular guy, maybe could have caught some traction as the anti-McCain. But he had to live in the shadow of Hayworth’s big head.

Now AZ will have to live in the shadow of McCain’s even bigger head. Disappointing.

exdeadhead on August 25, 2010 at 4:02 AM

I’ll say it again, our society would have been better off if McCain died in Vietnam and one of our other aviators returned in his place.

Tim Burton on August 25, 2010 at 2:47 AM

Well, congrats on one of the most vile and inappropriate comments ever. Nothing you say after this will have any credibility at all. Ever again.

Hope it was worth it, li’l buckaroo.

Gilda on August 25, 2010 at 4:07 AM

OMG, exdeadhead (okay I laughed). It was by Bill Montgomery, when it showed he was up by 20,000 votes in the early votes. I thought there might be video of it, but they cut it out.

The whole JD/McCain thing was horrible. It’s amazing what you can do with a lot of money. To be honest, I talked with JD a couple of times and I did vote for him, but I understand why people went with McCain. That is all I will say.

JackofNoTrades on August 25, 2010 at 4:09 AM

In other news, they have broken out the best tequila at la Raza HQ. Just a strange coincidence, I am sure.

Tav on August 25, 2010 at 4:29 AM

I seriously hope the Dem wins in Nov.
At least we’ll know where he stands on issues and we can finally be rid of Mac!!!
I’m sending the Dem money. I’d even campaign for him if I lived there.
I. LOATHE. MAC. THAT. MUCH!

Got news for you, Broomhilda, the only people with any authority on ‘inappropriate’ comments are the admins. And you’re not one of them.

McCain is a living insult to veterans by his personal conduct, namely by lying his @$$ off constantly, and by his political career as he’s constantly sabotaging the very nation they’re trying to protect.

Neither him nor Hayworth should be anywhere near the halls of power, and that they are is a disgusting commentary on our voting system.

Dark-Star on August 25, 2010 at 4:57 AM

If it was never going to be close and JD had no chance, explain why McCain needed to spend $20 million dollars on this election?

Tim Burton

That’s exactly why it was never going to be close, among other reasons. But keep telling us how we don’t know Arizona politics after this 20-30 point spanking, lol.

If McCain would have had only $3 million, the race would have been close if not won by JD.

But….he didn’t only have $3 million. You may as well argue that JD could have won if only McCain had gotten caught molesting children some kids.

JD never had a chance, and apparently everyone but you and a few other “experts” (lol) on Arizona politics knew it.

Next you’ll be telling us Ron Paul would be president today if only everyone else dropped out. Just look at the straw polls if you don’t believe me, lol.

You and your clown posse go right ahead and teach McCain a lesson by supporting his democrat opponent. What could go wrong? That strategy worked out well for the country in 2008, didn’t it?

xblade on August 25, 2010 at 5:00 AM

Great, so Arizona will have two Democrats on the General Election ballot. The thought of giving McCain another six years to kick us in the teeth when he isn’t stabbing us in the back makes me sick. We all know what he is – why would Arizonans want more of it?

Two-party blindness. The perpetual ‘one or the other’ mentality has both sides laughing up their sleeves, and the joke is on us.

Um. Well. You see, I was expressing my opinion. Not asserting or claiming to assert any “authority” of any kind, administrative or otherwise. My comment on Tim Burton’s vile, inappropriate and credibility-suicidal remark contained no call to or threat of action.

Interesting that you are unable to make that distinction.

A sad attempt at authority indeed. And an even sadder attempt to worm your way out of it when I call you for being a bitter harpy.

McCain has always been comfortable lecturing and belittling conservatives.

mobydutch on August 25, 2010 at 12:48 AM
That’s the best summation of what’s offensive about McCain, that and his daughter blasting and insulting Republicans at every turn. It’s really a classic experience in contending with bad taste overall, one that many of us would rather not have.

Oh I get it. You don’t know the meaning of the word “credibility.”

It’s not something that’s bestowed externally by an “authority,” it’s something that’s earned or lost on an individual basis. Someone who is trustworthy or believable is credible. Tim Burton proved that he is not, with that deathwish remark about McCain.

By the way, how’s your credibility holding up right about now, Dark-Star? You sure do seem to be interested in propping up this Tim Burton character. Hmmm. Kinda like you *know* the guy, like maybe really well. Like maybe you and him share some rather vital things, IYKWIMAITYD.

Time to expel AZ from the Union. I agree with the comment to help the Dem get elected. It won’t be any worse than having TAFKAM in the Senate and we will all be rid of
McCain.

Expelling a State from the Union when they vote for a RINO in a primary is the only Constitutionally sound option.

He was the sole Republican Senate vote for ObamaCare, I guess we must recall at this moment.

Marcus on August 25, 2010 at 7:02 AM

I don’t trust the McCain bashers any further than I can throw them. He voted against HCR, has been one of the strongest supporters of our military and as far as I know, nobody has been granted amnesty. I don’t have anything ugly to say about Hayworth, but those trashing McCain are certainly not real conservatives and they can kma.

mike_NC9 on August 25, 2010 at 7:06 AM

There’s nothing to celebrate here. Hayworth proved to be a bad candidate.

McCain will revert to form.

It’s was a lose/lose scenario from the start.

chalons on August 25, 2010 at 7:10 AM

This I don’t understand.

stenwin77 on August 25, 2010 at 7:16 AM

I’m sure here would be fewer McCain bashers if he had decided to show up for the 2008 presidential campaign. Apart from the Sarah Palin nomination, that ‘campaign’ was a virtual forfeit.

Bradky on August 25, 2010 at 7:23 AM

chalons on August 25, 2010 at 7:20 AM

He was doing well in the polls until the economy cratered and by then it wouldn’t have mattered who the Republicans were running, there was no way the country was going to elect another Republican president, especially with the media’s thumb on the donkey scale.

The Democrats are going to get a dose of that this November, time to move on.

NoDonkey on August 25, 2010 at 7:27 AM

Sarah Palin blew it when she threw her support behind McCain, the RINO chameleon. Her support for this man was a major mistake and will again hurt the Republican Party and certainly conservatives. McCain and his Progressive family cannot be trusted.

If no, then you have no business trying to speak on behalf of vets because you simply have no clue. STFU if you aren’t.
If yes, you are lying in regards to what he has done in terms of legislation for vets and the military. Where did your honesty go?

DISTASTEFUL

Senator McLame has stabbed conservatives in the back more often than he has wrecked vehicles. The fact that he is allegedly FROM Azizona and has done a singularly poor job of deporting illegals or FIGHTING! FIGHTING! FIGHTING! for a resolution of the issue is a minor blot on his record. In getting to the bottom of it, however, his positions on everything else the left holds dear is a real odoriferous problem. He smells like an inconsiderate RINO, an image also projected in his POTUS run where it looked like he was doing his best as a “me too’ behind the Dems. That may have been an attempt to stay close to the “middle” and bless him for the effort to keep his campaign from going down the drain.

However, there is ample evidence that he is no conservative and I don’t know about your ass. I am very hard core, however. Read the article below, clean yourself up and call me. I would gladly kiss it before supporting McLame.

Here is an article from 2008.
