Boehner to Obama: Fire your economic team
posted at 9:30 am on August 24, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
In an address to Ohio voters this morning, John Boehner will call for some Hope and Change at the White House. Specifically, Boehner hopes that Barack Obama will change personnel on his economics team, which has thus far failed to produce any success in generating real growth or jobs in the US. The Washington Post quotes the upcoming Boehner speech as saying that “the writing is on the wall” for Obamanomics:
Boehner, delivering what his aides billed as a major economic address, will say President Obama’s team lacks “real-world, hands-on experience” in creating jobs, according to a draft version of his speech that was released in advance. The Republican lawmaker plans to cite reports that some senior aides complained of “exhaustion,” including the recently departed budget chief Peter Orszag.
“President Obama should ask for – and accept – the resignations of the remaining members of his economic team, starting with Secretary Geithner and Larry Summers, the head of the National Economic Council,” Boehner says in the prepared remarks, which are scheduled for delivery at the City Club of Cleveland shortly after 8 a.m. The mass dismissal, he adds, “is no substitute for a referendum on the president’s job-killing agenda. That question will be put before the American people in due time. But we do not have the luxury of waiting months for the president to pick scapegoats for his failing ‘stimulus’ policies.”
Boehner’s demand for the ousters of Geithner and Summers is likely to be met with derision in the West Wing, and denounced as mere electioneering less than 75 days before the midterm election. Calls for cabinet officials to be fired is nothing new for the party out of power — during the Bush administration many Democrats called for the ouster of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, a demand that was not met until Democrats swept the 2006 midterms.
That’s an interesting example to use. Bush didn’t get the message on the war until after the GOP suffered a big defeat at the midterm polls, losing control of both chambers of Congress — an outcome that was viewed as a long shot before the election. Had Bush acted earlier to bolster confidence by removing Rumsfeld and demonstrating that he understood that Americans wanted to see some change in direction in Iraq, would the GOP have salvaged the Senate? Possibly, although it’s hard to tell four years later.
Clearly, though, the sinking fortunes of the war in Iraq played a large part in the midterm losses of 2006. Just as clearly, the sinking fortunes of the economy will play a large role in these midterms. What has Obama done to build confidence? According to Bloomberg, he sent Joe Biden on the road to sell Recovery Summer while Obama vacations in Martha’s Vineyard:
With President Barack Obama and other members of his administration taking a summer break, one senior official stayed behind to pick up the slack.
Vice President Joe Biden has been crossing the country over the past seven days on official visits and political events, staying in front of voters as the White House spokesman on the economy.
In other words, Obama will keep demanding to voters that they’re wrong about the economy, that things have actually improved, even though more of them are out of work and the economy has started nose-diving after only a brief period of meager growth. It’s difficult to see how Obama could possibly be more out of touch. People can read economic indicators for themselves, and having them all decline for several months is not something people will forget simply because Biden offers a jolly spin from the dais.
In fact, Boehner may have given Obama the best political advice he could get. Firing the team that failed to deliver the growth Obama promised would at least show that Obama understands that his policies aren’t working. If he waits until the day after the midterms, it’s not going to do him or his party much good.
Update: Trap sprung, says Andrew Malcolm:
Boehner’s communications staff springs the trap. Having drawn their DNC opponents into helping to publicize the Republican speech, just before he speaks and in time for the morning news shows they leak the fairly dramatic news that the GOP leader’s remarks will call for the mass firing of Obama’s entire economic time for, in effect, engineering the prolonged period of unemployment. Which gets the debate back onto the economy where the GOP wants it.)
And where it should have been all along.

If Obama is an ideologue he’ll become even more vocal after November. He’ll demonize republican obstruction and begin calling for the removal of republican obstructionism. His party loyalists will be demanding republican acquiescence to Obama’s economic policies.
If Obama is merely an opportunists, he’ll do all of the above, but play more golf, and then go home while blaming the evil republicans for the countries difficulties.

There’s a difference between firing your economic advisers and simply replacing them with like-minded people and firing them and replacing them with advisers who will move government policy away from the statist model the current Team Obama faces.
My guess is they follow the first tactic between now and November, rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic and maintain their current policies, simply hoping that the change will buy them back some votes and popular support before the election — which it might in a few places prone to lean Democratic, but not many others (and the odds are next year, you’ll see Obama employ the’ “Triangulation in Name Only” strategy, in which he and his big media supporters tell everyone they’re following the Clinton-Morris plan but then push absolutely nothing and sign no legislation that shows they’ve learned their lesson and are moving towards the center).

I don’t know but when even the likes of Barney Frank gets the message, O is pretty much the weak link. Yesterday I read where still another established business in this area has gone under–Fashionbug. The yellow pages that used to contain ad after ad for plumbers, air condition people, electricians, carpenters are down to 2 or 3 a page now. More and more store fronts are ecoming empty even in the usually more prosperous areas. Still this nit wit in the WH says all is well and strolls down his chosen path with side trips to pricey shops on The Vineyard. Is there anything at all that can get the message to this hard#$$.

Anyone who expects anything positive from these serial bumblers is barking up the wrong tree.

Boehner did the smart thing, IMHO. Obama’s so hard-headed that he won’t admit defeat, meaning he keeps the same losers in those positions until at least November 3, if not longer, just to spite the Republicans.

Obama won’t change his economic staff or at least not significantly. The President knows how to create more jobs. Less punitive regulations and lower taxes. It really is that simple. He won’t do this of course. Giving people more control over their own lives is not something that a power mad dictator wants. It is always and forever going to be about him and not the people.

It’s a catch 22 for Obama. If he fires his economic team now, he’s essentially conceding that Porkulus has failed. Which would be catastrophic for the Dems this close to the midterms. If he keeps them around until after the midterms, he appears out-of-touch and tone-deaf. Which would also be bad for the Dems so close to the midterms.
IMO, since Barry already appears out-of-touch, he should keep his economic team around til after November. It’s the less painful option for the Dems’ electoral prospects.
Doughboy on August 24, 2010 at 9:56 AM
Boehner’s right. Timmy “I never had a real job” should have been fired last winter. I don’t think it’s very valid to compare Rumsfeld’s firing to anything happening now. Let’s get this straight – Rumsfeld’s ouster was just as much due to “Maverick” McCain as it was to any election losses.
Rumsfeld was a top-notch leader and he forced military officers to THINK and PERFORM – they didn’t like this and so, ran to guys like McCain for relief. We later nominated that schlub for President.
The SURGE is the big issue – and Rumsfeld could have carried that out just as well as Gates did.

It’s not hard to see that O won’t do anything until the Dems get wiped out. Then he can say “The people have spoken”, just as W did. the firing of the Sec of defense was a political move and of course Bush being as inept as any president until Obama took the exact wrong message from the defeat of 2006. After 2006 Bush went even more liberal thinking that the voters were embracing liberalism instead of voting against it. the same thing happened in 2008 as the voters saw no difference between the liberal GOP and the liberal Dems they voted for the party that was going to give the people the money instead of the corparations since the choice was between liberalism and liberalism.

I think Obama wants the GOP to sweep it in November. He needs a villain, cannot lead without a villain. For all the talk about his soaring campaign speeches, they were never anything more than classic virtue-villain demagoguery, with Obama placed at the center, as the savior of the people from the evil “other.” He hasn’t had that these two years, and it’s been a disaster for him. Oh, sure, he keeps dragging Bush’s corpse around, but it’s a corpse, after all, hardly a threat to the electorate. No, Obama needs a villainous Republican Congress. With that, he will once again stand before the columns, a Superman fighting for truth, justice, and the American way against the evil Republican obstructionists. And the media will press his red and blue suit, hold the corners of his cape, and send him aloft. I’ll bet, in fact, that by January we’ll have at least one news magazine cover with Barry wearing the iconic ‘S,” his foot crushing some legs labeled “Republican obstructionism.” Wait for it. That’s a scarey scenario–I’m almost sorry to have it pointed out.I think he and his people’s indifference is because they look at stats and do not get out into the real world and just stroll around looking at the ever increasing damage(his strolling is apparently done on the Vineyard, in Bar Harbor and his wife’s on the Spanish Gold Coast–also the government employed areas surrounding DC). This damage has spread into the middle class areas and grows daily/hourly. How can he be so blindly stubborn? How can he keep insisting that his methods work? Problem -there’s a big difference between the fall of 2008 and now. Then, Bammie could ask pretty much anyone in the country to join his team and they would. Two years later Bammie is looking like a loser one-term president, and who would want to join that?
In addition, all the left-wing ideas for rescuing our economy have failed, predicably. Anyone that Bammie would put on his team has to believe in those failed ideas, or they will be unwelcome. Any changes he makes can’t make a difference.

John Kerry: “Very active” efforts underway to reach settlement with Taliban
http://hotair.com/archives/2010/08/21/john-kerry-very-active-efforts-underway-to-reach-settlement-with-taliban/
Admitting there is “no military solution” right after Obama has sent over 30,000 troops seems to me a bit of a contradiction.
Kerry seems to be saying that this was a mistake. He is already declaring the military objective a failure before it is fully implemented. Before Obama’s 2nd General has even had time to implement it.
Kerry is obliviously laying the ground work for “surrendering with style”….a withdrawal because there is no “military” solution and because the American public wants this to be over with.
How in the World Kerry thinks any negotiations will go well with the President and other democrats constantly yelling “we are out of here in a few months” is beyond rational.
The Taliban don’t need to negotiate….they know that this administration wants out as soon as possible…..why negotiate with an enemy that is hell bent on surrender.
The same people who constantly yelled “surrender” in Iraq and were 100% wrong…are now in charge.
If this is the course the Obama administration is going to pursue…then count on the Taliban,Al-Qaeda,and other Jihadist groups celebrating their victory in the streets as we withdraw and work on Kerry’s Political solution that has no chance without the military solution working first.
You can bet this will have a huge impact on 2012.

I’m sure Boehner has to go on record as saying something, but it wouldn’t matter a hill of beans if Obumbler fired anyone. He’d just replace them with more leftist idiots.

Anybody with a pulse knows this for a fact.
What would be REALLY shocking is if the Stupid Party of Michael Steele actually anticipated this and prepared to aggressively counter punch with a comprehensive legislative, media and PR strategy.

Despite what our resident concern troll says, this is a very good move by Boehner. And it does exactly parallel the Dems ramping up the calls for Rumsfeld to be fired in the runup to the 2006 elections. Great timing to make this speech on a day when such dismal housing numbers come out and will be the lead story on the evening news, AND while Obama is on vacation. It will get WIDE coverage.

Pretty sure that wasn’t W, but his dad:
(Notice that in that quotation, the NYT spelled “Democratic” with a capital D when clearly a small d was called for. All the news that’s fit [for the Democrats] to print!)

Obama and media response (one and the same) – bring out Sherrod, the creep who’ll be paid millions more of taxes, in order not to sue, while working as a contractor, for more of your taxes, to keep America race-balanced. What a stupid country!
