Video: Midterm campaign ads somehow getting even freakier

posted at 4:13 pm on August 23, 2010 by Allahpundit

If we’re already rolling out “Young Frankenstein” parodies in August, I can’t wait to see what’s in the chute for October. You may not recognize the candidate here — it’s Mattie Fein, who’s trying to bump off Jane Harman in CA-36 — but it’s a testament to the viral success of this year’s campaign ads that you might recognize the director. Remember Ladd Ehlinger, the auteur behind the greatest campaign ad ever? This is his latest, and despite its goofiness, it’s a clever approach. Half the battle in trying to take down a well known, well funded incumbent like Harman (her husband’s the mega-millionaire who bought Newsweek) is name recognition; if you send voters into the booth with a choice between two names they know rather than just “Harman and the generic Republican,” you’ve got an outside shot — especially in a year like this one. Fein’s goal here is purely and simply to make people sit up and pay attention. Mission accomplished.

Harman’s isn’t one of the 105(!) Democratic seats that Geraghty now thinks is in play, but she’s had some remarkably close races in the past. In 2000, she beat the incumbent by less than two percent and in the glorious year of 1994, she won by 800 votes. Fein will need help from a very big red wave, but good news: A very big red wave might well be on its way.

That was a FEIN message indeed.

High points for entertaining.
Is this what political ads should be?
Also, Mattie Fine.

I don’t think she has a prayer in that district …though it did go to Schwarzenegger for both the recall and his reelection.

Funny add but most Californian’s could give a sh*t about Ahmadinejad right now.

It’s all about the jobs n’ taxes, honey.

I think that ad is pretty funny. I love the “YES!” with the violinista emphasis added. I checked out Fein’s website, and she’s got some theater background and acting stuff so this thing appears to be up her alley. I think I also saw some ad about her and horses, another thing she’s big into. Hopefully, she doesn’t combine the “horse” and the “frankenstein” meme’s with the cliche’ of “beating a dead horse….”

I have a friend from the LA beach community. He said the district used to have a Republican representing it before Harman did a political comeback. There are quite a few Republicans in this district; I guess more so than any other westside district. Good luck, this would be an awesome pickup.

redeye on August 23, 2010 at 5:02 PM

@TimTebow: yeah, Harman’s district is the hippy-dippy coast from Venice all the way down to Redondo & even San Pedro, but skips around the PV Peninsula, which is in Dana Rohrabacher’s (sp?) portfolio, I think.

So Ms. Fein definitely has a tough row to hoe, though I was in Venice right before the election and I was shocked to see how few Obama bumper stickers & what little O signage was on view there. Maybe nobody wanted to offend their most famous resident and iconoclastic conservative Dennis Hopper? ;-)

Yeah, any LA district will be tough, but this might the one that’s kinda doable. Either way, from what my friend has told me, it’s an awesome place to live. Outside of S. Florida, the only other place I would live would be LA or NYC. I’m guessing you’re from there; must be great.

TimTebowSavesAmerica on August 23, 2010 at 5:24 PM

Perhaps this really weird ad will have some appeal in the artsy fartsy socialist enclave of Venice…last time I was on the Venice walk, I could have registered my dog to vote, but only perhaps absentee, which would be a cinch (our signatures happen to match).

Harman’s district includes many other South Bay beach cities, but was deliberately gerrymandered to avoid the balancing effect of conservatives in Palos Verdes Peninsula.

With this, it will be all but impossible to get rid of Jane Harman.

marybel on August 23, 2010 at 5:25 PM

The Ugly American on August 23, 2010 at 4:24 PM

The point is that Harman’s company, Harman International, owns a European subsidiary that does direct business with Iran — dealing in electronics products that have military & space applications.

Harman, in other words, profits from direct business with an American enemy that as we all know is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism.

Mattie Fein definitely has to get out the word on this issue during her campaign, and she needs to have plenty of time to explain this situation. Californians will care about it once they find out more about what’s going on.

@irishspy on August 23, 2010 at 5:05 PM
The lower end of your district (El Segundo & points south) includes a lot of aerospace/defense industry which is looking at tough times ahead with Obama slashing defense & effectively ending the government’s role in manned space flight. Do you get the impression your neighbors might be inclined to vote their pocketbooks this time around?

leilani on August 23, 2010 at 5:27 PM

Now, I guess one of the questions is, will uber-Liberal, Mel Brooks try to have this pulled for copyright infringement?

Not from there but I spend a lot of time there visiting family (PVE), a former boyfriend & (formerly) for work.

I’m one of those weird people who loves LA too. I dunno, some people can filter out all the icky bits and appreciate the good parts, but some people can’t and see it only as a ‘hellhole’ (which is what another former boyfriend from France used to call it, lol). You & I must be in the former camp.

I don’t think I could live there til they have a political revolution there, though.

Harman is on the wrong side of Pelosi anyway. Her constituents have little to lose by dumping Harman, and much to gain if young Mattie comes in with a Republican majority.

I thought the Greatest Campaign Ad Evah was “Demon Sheep.”

Seriously. That Mattie Fein video rocks, and it’s so perfect for an LA candidate to make a movie parody; I bet it gets her votes from “teetering on the edge” liberals who let the humor and cleverness of it all persuade them to vote for someone other than the same-old same-old.

I don’t live in LA but I sent her some $
