Video: Is the DNC Bush ad a base call?

posted at 3:35 pm on August 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Tired? Lame? Sure, says Erin Billings of Roll Call, but it’s the only play that Democrats have. They have controlled Washington for almost two years and Congress for almost four, and what have they produced? Skyrocketing deficits, a health-care bill so disliked that six out of ten voters want it repealed, and a couple of gimmicky economic programs that have utterly failed to restart American growth. Unlike individual candidates who are distancing themselves from the stench so much that they won’t even identify themselves as Democrats, the DNC is stuck with both the label and the President. Misdirection is the only play they have left:

The actual strategy for this ad is to motivate the base into action, which gets some discussion here, but even that explanation looks lame, and for the same reason. While some strategists chide Republicans for running against Democrats rather than on their own merits, at least they’re running against Democrats currently in office. George W. Bush is about as relevant to this election as, well, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, depending on which side of the divide one is on. Using Bush as the golem in 2010 reeks of desperation, even as an appeal to the base, since Bush is not only not running, he’s not even talking about politics these days — which some in the base occasionally lament.

If the DNC has decided to spend money on base calls, it seems like they are giving up on independents this year — or more accurately, recognize that independents have given up on them.

Or even more accurately, they gave up on “independents” (read: non-moonbats) first.

Not quite. George W. Bush was the President when the economy slipped and broke its leg. Obama’s been the hospital that didn’t know how to cure it, and broke the other leg in the process.

But W. is not blameless.

It would be awesome if the DNC would run an ad saying

You told us you didn’t want ObamaCare and we said We Don’t Care. You said you didn’t want Cap & Trade and the House busted a Cap in your a$$. The Supreme Court said Lilly Ledbetter was too late and we said We Know Better. Democrats: The more you resist the more force we will use.”

W is indeed not blameless. But he has been out of the picture for almost two years.

Ed makes the point in the post. The Dems have had complete control for almost two years. They’ve been in charge of the purse strings and Congress for almost four.

Of course Bush isn’t so evil as to not have some on the Left trying to get him to way in on the GZ mosque just to give Obama political cover.

Remeber when GWB started rubbing shoulders with the Clintons..during the Indonesian tsunami ? That served GWB so well everytime Hillary opened her mouth in the following years, didn’t it .
Then GWB gave in to Nazi Policei and Dingy Harry on the Goldman Sachs affair, and once the money was signed by Bush , the 2 (dem)rats went about slapping him around in public ?
Now , when Hussain and his henchmen use every opprtunity to blame him for everything past present and future , he sends his wife to stand in solidarity with the most hateful woman this country has ever seen in the WH ? On Sept 11 ?
If he wants to stay out of public eye and not interfere in the workings of the current prez, then his actions must reflect so too. Either come out and support Hussain on the G-o terromosque or forever keep your peace.
And Mr Bush, we know you are a glutton for punishment , but don’t ruin it for the republicans in 2010 ..specially if you can’t do anything to help them..

macncheez on August 23, 2010 at 4:45 PM

The DNC needs to take a page from the RNC and just spend their money at fine steakhouses, expensive liquor and on strippers.

Because you’re going to get beat like rented mules, no matter what you do.

YYZ on August 23, 2010 at 3:44 PM

Neither is Congress and the American people. Bush tried on more than a dozen occasions to reign in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Democrats blocked it. He never had the kind of majorities Obama has today. So if we are going to talk about who is and is not blameless, you might as well add Clinton too…after he signed a lot of legislation in the 90s that helped create the economy of the 2000s.

Terrye on August 23, 2010 at 5:02 PM

Exactly my point. It was a disaster relief and Americans would have donated anyway. With or without Clinton.
Clinton was looking for some high profile WH sponsored relevancy for himself at that time, and GWB gave that toehold to him and Hillary.
Tsunami relief did not need Clinton. But Clinton needed that access to WH and media. Ofcourse Clintons don’t raise money for anyone but themselves.

YYZ on August 23, 2010 at 3:44 PM

No one here at HA ever claimed Bush was blameless to my knowledge. In fact, many here have called him out repeatedly for spending like a drunk sailor.

But it’s important to remember several Inconvenient Truths.

Bush inherited the dot-com bust from Clinton, inherited the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent economic fallout from Clinton, and the Fannie-Freddie debacle can be directly laid at the feet of Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Jaime Gorelick, Howell Raines, and many other Democrats. When Bush (and McCain) tried to rein in Fannie and Freddie, they all laughed in their faces and blocked any reform, and now Frank wants to make them disappear so all of the evidence of Democrat guilt in their failure will forever disappear.

And before you start to claim that Bush made things worse by invading Iraq and spending even more, remember he did so using the evidence that the previous Democrat Administration had generated. And he convinced enough of the Democrats to sign off on the Resolution that it passed.

Del Dolemonte on August 23, 2010 at 5:41 PM

Regardless of the merits of the argument, that ad was terrible. It looked like something produced for a county commissioner that came out of a 1978 time capsule.

If one wants to buy a house, gets the potential home inspected and is given the report, decides to buy the house, and begins to have problems with it that appeared on the report, is one suppose to blame the previous owner?

Of course not.

BHO had no problem quickly setting up a transition team, even going as far as the “Office of President Elect” insignia way before he took office. Are we really to believe that the left had no idea what had been happening in this nation?
