Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on August 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Can you believe that nineteen months have passed since Barack Obama became President?  A lot has happened in those nineteen months, but in some ways, much hasn’t — including Iran’s push for a nuclear weapon.  Three years after the US intel community inexplicably decided that Tehran wasn’t trying to build a nuke and almost two years after Obama’s “smart power” and “outstretched hand” guided foreign policy, the mullahcracy hasn’t deflected an inch from its trajectory towards being a nuclear-armed nation.

But don’t worry, the Obama administration told Israel last week, because they won’t get one for another year — we think:

The Obama administration, citing evidence of continued troubles inside Iran’s nuclear program, has persuadedIsrael that it would take roughly a year — and perhaps longer — for Iran to complete what one senior official called a “dash” for a nuclear weapon, according to American officials. …

Israeli intelligence officials had argued that Iran could complete such a race for the bomb in months, while American intelligence agencies have come to believe in the past year that the timeline is longer.

“We think that they have roughly a year dash time,” said Gary Samore, President Obama’s top adviser on nuclear issues, referring to how long it would take the Iranians to convert nuclear material into a working weapon. “A year is a very long period of time.”

Yeah, it seems longer all the time, too.

Let’s not forget that it’s been more than a year since Obama and his administration essentially voted “present” on the uprising in Tehran after the mullahs botched a rigged election so badly that everyone noticed it, and almost as long since Obama asserted that he was losing patience with Iran’s rejection of his outstretched hand.  In fact, it’s been more than a year since Obama asked Israel to give him six months to resolve the Iranian nuclear-weapons crisis.

And a year is a very long time, indeed, when one is waiting for an ally to act as though they’re concerned about an existential threat to their people.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me atobamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

the eventuality in this issue is that one of the three key players will seize the initiative and act upon their intentions. That’ll be Iran, Israel, or the USA….

stay tuned folks…

I’m not quite sure why BO is offended that Iran won’t talk to them. He’s a blasphemer.
An apostate.
BO’s not a muslim (just likes to identify with them), but he mistakenly thinks bcs he grew up amongst them & played one for a while that he can just walk in & out of the doors of Christianity & islam as easily as he changes underwear.

At this point, who in the world would believe anything this O-ministration has to say? They have lost any shred of credibility not only here at home but Internationally as well. HopenChange!

Obama believes that we have no more responsibility to do anything over the Iran issue as does say, Mexico or Canada or… He doesn’t regard our friendship (historical that is) with Israel to be special in any way.

This gives the amateur foreign policy dilettantes in the administration an opportunity to delay any decisive, committed action and to eventually use the adjectives “unforeseen,” “unfortunate,” “unexpected,” “regrettable,” and “cowardly” regarding their misadventures in the Mideast.
.
We saw The Ø take weeks to make up his little mind to send troop increases to facilitate the Afghan Surge Operation, why should we be surprised that the learn-on-the-job 20 handicap golfer-in-chief would react with anything like alacrity or urgency about the Iranian nuclear threat.

Some of you are old enough to recall movies about the Kettle family. For those of you who aren’t: The Kettles were a stereotypical country family with a lazy father. One running gag throughout the series was Pa Kettle attempting to use something, like a radio or a car or an axe or whatever. These attempts fail because the device in question is usually broken. Pa would tiredly say, “Gonna have to fix that one of these days” while rolling over to take another nap.

I feel the current administration has become the Pa Kettle of foreign and domestic policies — but without the innocent charm. Or, if you perfer a more recent movie reference: He sleeps; they live.

Israel can defend themselves with hundreds of nukes. But if we think the Mullahs are going to share bombs with terrorists:

We warn of the dangers of having nukes. Then, one night, a cruise missile with a nuclear warhead might happen to hit their storage facility.

Calm down, please. This idea is not original to me. Moreover, since there is no profit stream for defense contractors, the strategy will never be adopted.

Caught a bit of Bill Bennett this morning. Interesting proposition from someone whose name/title I missed: There’s more than a 50% chance that Obama will strike Iran. Why? Because nuclear disarmament is a ‘centerpiece’ of his policies, and a nuclear armed Iran would end up with the biggest arms race we’ve ever seen in the Middle East, with all the countries (like Saudi Arabia) who are threatened by Iran looking to go nuclear.

I think he’ll wait until after the midterm elections to strike, and as a purely political move it would actually help his approval ratings with the American peeps.

For better or worse we made ourselves the world’s “police” after WWII and the rest of the world was pretty much OK with it. Keeping that in mind, if Obama does nothing he is implicitly giving Iran the green light to go ahead and do what they want, which means a nuclear armed Iran sometime in the near future.

I swear, I am now convinced that if you were to ask Obama and his advisers if they even know anything about Iran, they would likely say they think it was a song done by some group called A Bunch Of Seabirds or something like that back in the 80s or somewhere around that time!

They are proving to be that dense!

And if a next administration were to actually do anything militarily about it, they will blame them for that also.

a “dash” for a nuclear weapon

What’s this? But . . . but . . . but hasn’t Im-a-damn-nutjob been telling us for years now that Iran is only developing nuclear capacity because it wants affordable energy? Didn’t he also say they weren’t interested in nuclear weapons? Have we been lied to? This is shocking!

And our poor dear Barry, trying for years to reach out and connect with this peace-loving Muslim nation. How could he possibly have known that his reverence for Islam, his kindergarten years in Indonesia, and his oh-so-irresistible charms would not be enough to appease the crazy mullahs?

Oh, if only there had been some clue . . . .

katablog.com on August 23, 2010 at 9:05 AM

Many of my conservative colleagues think that Israel will do what is in their best interest, because “that’s what Israel always does.” I wish that were the case. Anyone remember Yitzahk Rabin’s disastrous handshake on the White House lawn while Clinton was president? Israel’s actions against Iran (or absence thereof) will depend entirely on their desire to look good to America, and that desire (or lack thereof) will depend on who’s in power, here and in Israel.

For my part, while Barack Obama is in office, while it pains me to say it, I think it is best if Israel treats America as a belligerent. What can we do to Israel that hasn’t already been done? I know a majority of the American people side with Israel, but a solid majority of American voters also voted for Barack Obama, and he is presently the commander- and diplomat-in-chief. Whatever else happens, it behooves Israel to act without taking Obama’s opinion into account.

gryphon202 on August 23, 2010 at 9:12 AM

It pains me as an American to say this but…

Please Israel, do what you must to protect yourself. You can not count on Pres. Obama to back you up any more.

mechkiller_k on August 23, 2010 at 9:28 AM

But don’t worry, the Obama administration told Israel last week, because they won’t get one for another year — we think:

Look, I was promised back in 2005 the earliest they could possibly have it was 2015. Are you telling me they were making that up? Next you’ll tell me is that a report came out in 2007 that said they hadn’t worked on it in 4 years yet they could still have one in 2015.

Disagree with whoever that was. When Bammie says nuclear disarmament is his goal, he means disarmament of the USA. Look at his new treaty with Russia, with which we will give up more than they will, while knowing that the Russians have cheated on every disarmament treaty we ever signed with them and will do so again.

I don’t know if he is doing that simply because he hates America, or if he is one of those exceedingly naive liberals that think if we disarm, the rest of the world will follow.

Iran went nuclear under Obama. I wonder if the Democrats are gonna hail that as another Obama success.

OxyCon on August 23, 2010 at 10:49 AM

Once you have the material, how hard is it to build a nuke? The science has been done.Fermi, Oppenheimer, Teller et.al solved that problem 65 years ago. I would think the design is sitting in a lab near Qom, just waiting for the arrival of the material from the reactor.
