It’s not just the economy, stupid
posted at 9:30 am on August 21, 2010 by Karl
Working their way through the Kubler-Ross stages, political scientists and bloggers like Jonathan Bernstein and Ezra Klein are busy promoting the thesis that Pres. Obama and Democrats running for their lives in the 2010 midterms are victims of Vast, Impersonal Forces Beyond Their Control, i.e., the economy. Passing unpopular legislation and insulting most Americans along the way really does not matter. Dan Foster and Jonah Goldberg have already addressed Klein’s version of the argument, so I’ll focus more on Bernstein, who wrote:
It’s not complicated at all: Obama’s approval ratings have fallen because the economy stinks. End of story. Anything else is on the margins…and it’s certainly possible that everything else is pushing his ratings up, not down.
First, the effect that the economy has on the political environment is sufficiently obvious that we do not need political scientists to explain it (though I agree with Bernstein that the media could learn a few things from his field). Second, it will surprise no one that academia was not exactly rushing to excuse the GOP for the poor economy in 2008. Third, one need not be a psychic to predict that if the economy turns around in the next few years, academics and pundits will not be urging the media to report that Obama was lucky that he ran in 2008 and is again lucky in 2012. Such is the genius of the “neutral story line.”
However, perhaps the silliest part of this thesis is that what happens “on the margins” is unimportant. If the GOP wins, say, 60 seats in November, it would be huge — but it would represent less than 15% of the seats in the House. The 2010 midterms will be fought out in a relatively small number of districts. Many of those races will involve shifts of relatively small percentages of voters. The GOP will win the House (or not) “on the margins.”
In these marginal districts, Democrats are losing and Republicans are winning. And the battlegrounds continue to expand. The president’s own pollster, Joel Benenson, reports that voters have clearly rejected the administration’s policies and general approach to governance; those results will be worse in marginal districts than in the solidly blue districts where Democrats are often packed. The Left is finally admitting that Obama’s signature initiative is a political albatross. Bernstein must have missed the memo.
Accordingly, when I read Bernstein, Klein and others advancing the notion that the Democrats’ policy agenda is not dragging them down, I hear the pleading of “Joliet” Jake Blues:
However, the voters in swing districts currently seem less forgiving than Jake’s Mystery Woman.

The GOP and Conservatives better get a grip and DIAL BACK the expectations or anything less than a 200 seat pickup will be considered a victory for the DOTUS and is party……let’s stay focused on working, sending emails, posting on Facebook, etc.
Let’s pound hard and be relentless…..it’s political war!

All politics is on the margins. You must convince the middle of your cause. Your own side already believes you and your political enemies never will.

Obama, the scam that keeps on keeping on. This would be hilarious if it wasn’t so nauseating. NOvember will tell it all.

It’s pretty obvious the left lives in a self induced bubble. They refuse to look outside that bubble, mainly because they think anyone living outside the bubble is a dunce and bitter clinger who has nothing to say or contribute except their hard earned dollars.
I have to say many Republicans live in their own bubble as well.
Many bubbles will pop in November 2010 and 2012.
Of course many heads will pop on 8/28.

Sure the economy plays a big role, and what did øbama do? The stimulus? Wow that really helped! Blame Bush? Yeah, W’s polling better than O right now.ObamaCare? Spending a year on that while the economy tanks…oh! Healthcare is going to drag us out of those huge Porkulus deficits, I almost forgot.
The best political ads are those gold commercials. Every one drives home the idea of how dismal and uncertain the economy is under øbama.

That’s a foreign concept to the left. Plus, it interferes with all their plans.
Well, except for unfettered, unprotected sexual freedom. They’re all for that. What would abortion mills do without unprotected sexual freedom?

To me it’s not just the economy, it’s the arrogant manner in which he entered office (I won), the opacity of the entire administration, the failure to include the GOPs ideas in the legislation that was shoved down our throats, the vacations, the golf, the czars, the complete incompetence in the handling of the Gulf spill, the constant Bush bashing, and on and on and on. I’ve never seen such failure in the oval office.
scalleywag on August 21, 2010 at 10:09 AM
Oh yes, his support for a Wahhabi Victory Mosque on the ashes of the 3,000 innocents massacred in the name of Islam is certainly working wonders.
I am very comforted to see the supporters of this Manchurian President are so self-deluded.
But even if it were possible to restrict the narrative to the economy, this won’t save Obama. If Bush drove the economy into the ditch then Obama drove it over the cliff.

JUICE BOX HERO
Standing in the rain
With his head hung low
Couldn’t get a ticket
It was a sold out show.
Heard the roar of the crowd
He could picture the scene.
Put his ear to the wall
Then like a distant scream.
He heard The One’s Just Words
Just blew him away
Saw stars in his eyes
and the very next day.
Bought a beat up laptop in a secondhand store
Didn’t know how to say it
but he knew for sure
The One’s Just Words
Sounded good in his ears.
Didn’t take long to play on fears.
Just The One’s Hot Air
spoken way down low
Was a One-way ticket
only One-way to go.
So he started typin’ ain’t never gonna stop
Gotta keep on typin’
Someday he’s gonna make it to the top.
And be a Juice Box Hero got stars in his eyes
He’s a Juice Box Hero.
He took the One’s hot air stars in his eyes
Juice Box Hero he’ll come and lie tonight.
In a town without shame
in a heavy downpour
Thought he passed his own shadow
by the backstage door.
Like a trip through the past
to that day on the green
And The One’s false promise made his whole life change.
Now he needs to keep typin’ he just can’t stop -
Gotta keep on typin’ that boy has got to stay on top.
And be an Juice Box Hero got stars in his eyes
He’s a Juice Box Hero got stars in his eyes.
Yeah
Juice Box Hero got stars in his eyes
With The One’s OK, he’ll come and lie
Come and lie tonight.
So he started typn’
ain’t never gonna stop
Gotta keep on typin’ -
Someday he’s gonna make it to the top.
And be a Juice Box Hero got stars in his eyes.
He’s a Juice Box Hero
Juice Box Hero
Juice Box Hero got stars in his eyes
stars in his eyes.

the economy is a driving factor explaining his decline. So is the lying, the arrogance, the subjugation of our national sovereignty, the failure to enforce laws, the demagoguery, the derision of common Americans by the ruling “class”, —all of these are additional factors that are weighing down the democratic party. The list could go on, and its certainly a multifactorial issue that is unable to be boiled down to a singular phenomenon. It has to be explained from many different areas.

Unemployment is rising, Bush tax cuts not being renewed and healthcate costs going up 9-10%. We aren’t anywhere near the bottom yet. Obama is doing this on purpose or he is totally incompetent, no other choice. Hang on, the dagger is still falling.
volsense on August 21, 2010 at 10:33 AM
The ‘other’ factor that Bernstein and Klein are tip-toeing around is that American public (e.g. voters), don’t like being LIED to. The mountain of deceit the ‘rats and Obozo are sitting on is nearly historic in scope.
Add to that the blatantly obvious ‘we don’t give a sh*t what you think’ attitude and you have the potential makings of a once-in-a-century event.
An additional unknown is the dawning realization of some democrats that the party they grew up with is dead and gone.
That’s the other ‘unspoken’ fact that’s being glossed over.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a dream world.
And those who have finally had the scales dropped from their eyes are looking for a new home.
November will be the beginning of either a re-affirmation, or a redefining of our Republic.
That’s the bottom line.

Also, we get it, Mr. Prez, you are fundamentally changing America before our very eyes.
mobydutch on August 21, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Bernstein and Klein have just gone back to the Carter ’80 blueprint for excusing the head guy’s failures — outside forces, systemic problems, too big for only one person to handle, etc. Eventually, the end point is the claim that the problems like unemployment (and, for Carter then and probably for Obama soon) inflation, can’t be solved under current world conditions. Like, say the Middle East, they can only be managed, so why blame the president for not rectifying the situation (and besides, the Republicans will just make things worse…)

Bruno Strozek on August 21, 2010 at 10:54 AM
And the stupidest part is the idea that everything else besides the economy is pushing the president’s approval rating up.
You must be ‘shrooming if you actually think that the only thing preventing a further plunge in the president’s approval is his support for the Ground Zero mosque. Or his lawsuit against Arizona for upholding immigration law. Or his 50 zillionth golf game and vacation trip. Or his karaoke party with Paul McCartney while oil is gushing into the Gulf. etc, etc
azkag on August 21, 2010 at 10:55 AM
Other things would be pushing his numbers up?
Like how he handled the Gulf Oil Spill?
Or the Underwear Bomber?
The Ft. Hood Shooting?
The Times Sqare Bomber?
Going after AZ?
The Stimulus?
TARPentine force fed to the economy?
GM and Chrysler bailouts?
Union bailouts under the guise of ‘Education’?
Taking over student loans?
Taking multiple vacations during a deep recession?
Having a wife jet off to Marbella Spain?
Flying the family dog separately?
Saying he ‘knows how we feel’ about the economy after his life of non-hard work?
I’m missing a few things, I’m sure, but which one of these is supposed to be the great pusher-up in the polls? Carrying through with the Bush policies on Gitmo, Iraq and Afghanistan? Really, what are the man’s great pluses? His inability to keep his own bicycle tires inflated and then telling everyone to make sure their car tires are properly inflated?
The Left is no longer living inside a ‘bubble’ or ‘echo chamber’. It is on the inside of a very thick shelled cannonball through which no sound can be heard at all.

The biggest problem for the Republicans is they’re going to have too many there who have been there for years. We know that group knows how to spend, we don’t know if they know how to budget.
Luckily for them, the Democrats completely blew their opportunity to lead. They decided to rule, rather than legislate, forcing policies and programs down the throats of Republicans and the public. THese past 2 years have shown what happens when those people that stand in the corner, you know them, they’re the ones that say, “If I were running this country……..” well, they are. They’ve been hanging around since the early 70′s and they now have the power and they showed they’re just as stupid now as they were then and have the same regard for the country they did then.
WIth the stimulus, it was so important to get it right because we only have so many trillions to throw at problems. Instead, the Democrats decided to play politics with it and pass all the liberal legislation they couldn’t pass before, give money to their friends and waste the remainder. NOw, after all that money, we’re worse off than we were and they’re saying we need to do it again. I ask, “What What???????” They refuse to spend the remaining funds on their union labor slush fund and states are stashing the money they’re sending to keep teachers on the payroll.
When this is studied, in history, the period from 2001 to 2011 will be the demise of the Democrats, from how they handled the 2000 election to the Iraq War, to their treatment of George W. Bush, to the press helping them win back their majorities and get a black man elected President. All of these things will have contributed to us getting to this point.

Administration’s Economic Programs + Economists = Sinking Ship – Rats
When will they take economics away from the dopes at The Economist and NYT?
There is a great opportunity for someone to illuminate how shoving cash into Democrat dream projects, propping up industries who have artificially high wages and compete with unfair traders from overseas, supporting educational programs with no clear demand for the skills of the students after graduation and building Rec centers in neighborhoods where the improvements will be spelled “Wreck” in a few years makes no sense.

Of course the title of this thread is correct. But it is also the economy… Perhaps mainly the economy.
-
For many of us though it’s always been his obvious Destroy America First Agenda… The economic disaster that is Barry Obama is just a small part of that, going all the way back to the first time we heard him speak or saw who his friends were we knew he wanted to change the greatest country in the world into something less.

Soooo much more than the economy, I’m not sure if Obama has anything going for him right now. No upside… bummer for Dems. Good for us, but being brash and cocky will get the GOP nowhere fast. The GOP needs to stick to conservative issues if they want to see a real change.
