Hillary: Are you ready for some Israeli/Palestinian peace talks?

posted at 1:28 pm on August 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

A new round of “peace process theater” begins on September 2, and this time it comes with a deadline: Both sides have agreed to negotiate for one year and no longer.

The one-year time limit is viewed as crucial because the Palestinians are leery of being drawn into an open-ended negotiation with Israel. Mr. Netanyahu has long said he is open to talks, but the Palestinians have been resistant, seeking assurances from the United States about the terms and conditions.

Israel has eschewed any pre-conditions to negotiations, officials said, including an extension of the government’s 10-month partial moratorium on settlement construction in the West Bank, which is set to expire on Sept. 26. The Obama administration has pushed to restart direct talks so that the two sides would be at the negotiating table when that date arrives.

Coincidentally, according to today’s front-page administration-fed NYT story, one year is also the timeframe U.S. officials are now claiming Iran has before it achieves nuclear breakout capacity. The idea of this two-step media offensive, presumably, is to put pressure on Israel not to do anything “rash” before the new round of peace talks plays out, especially with news set to break tomorrow that the Bushehr reactor is ready to go. That’s consistent with the White House’s thinking all along: They’ve always believed that settling the Palestinian issue first will make it easier to deal with Iranian nukes by denying the mullahs an opportunity to exploit the great Muslim grievance. If a peace deal is struck, then theoretically the goodwill it’ll generate towards Israel and America among Sunni nations will neutralize the Muslim solidarity that Iran wants to exploit when the confrontation over its nuke program finally comes. I’m not sure how that’ll work in practice, though, since Hamas will play no role in the peace negotiations and has no interest in ceding Gaza to its enemies in the Palestinian Authority in the event that a peace deal is hashed out. On the contrary, with Iran’s full support, they’ll inevitably accuse Abbas of having sold out the Palestinian nation in order to inflame the same sense of Muslim grievance and solidarity that the peace talks are meant to mute. In fact, if O shocks the world and the talks start making serious progress, I assume Iran and Hamas (and Hezbollah, of course) will simply precipitate some sort of crisis in order to derail them. Which is to say, how can you expect any deal to hold as long as Tehran and its proxies still have fangs?

My guess is that, if talks start to advance, there’ll be some sort of effort behind the scenes to bribe Iran into not making trouble. What that will look like, I have no idea — maybe relaxing sanctions? — but the thinking will probably evolve from “We need this peace deal to give us cover in confronting Iran on its nukes” to “We can now afford to let Iran have its nukes because, thanks to this peace deal, tensions in the region have been permanently reduced.” What could go wrong?

In a way you have to give Hillary credit. She hangs tough.
Her husband made a fool out of her in front of the World with a girl just a few years older than his daughter. She thought she was a shoo in for the democrat nomination and the democrat party stepped all over her and gave it to an amateur. Then the amateur duped her into taking the Secretary of State job which he removed her as a threat if she would have stayed in the Senate. She isn’t worth a hill of beans as Secretary of State and these peace talks are not going anywhere. The Arabs want to destroy Israel and there will never be peace with the Arabs and Israel. Now the Arabs have a President in the White House who feels exactly as they do.

We know the drill. Bush 41 tried it. Bill Clinton tried it. Bush 43 tried it. Now Obama/Hillary will try it. You score a big diplomatic coup and get a beautiful photo-op with an Israeli PM and a Palestinian leader shaking hands with a US President or Secretary of State, and said President gets nominated for a second Nobel Peace Prize.

Then the Palestinians start whining about Jewish settlements, yada, yada, yada, and Israeli troops over the border, yada, yada, yada, and Jerusalem should be Palestinian, and the Israelis say you can’t have Jerusalem, and please stop shooting rockets on our cities, and the Palestinians slam the door and walk out, and the Gang that Can’t Shoot Straight sends up thousands of rockets over Israel, and a few dozen unlucky Israeli civilians are killed, and the Palestinians ask Israel if they want peace yet. And US President X says “yes, we must have peace”, and Israeli PM Y says “I can’t believe we’re still doing this”.

Bibi Netanyahu has been there and done that, Hillary Clinton watched her husband do it, and they both know it will lead nowhere, but you’ve got to do it to avoid a big bad condemnation letter from the big bad United Nations against that big bad Zionist empire 8 miles wide. And Ahmanutjob in Iran keeps building his nukes. And the beat goes on. And the beat goes on.

And the Citizen of the World will get his photo-op, and look good not talking about the Summer Without Recovery.

And if you really believe in Hope and Change, maybe, just maybe, the Israelis and Palestinians just might sign a peace treaty under the guidance of President Chelsea Clinton or President Bobby Jindal.

Just a “blocking” maneuver to prevent Israel from addressing the nuclear Iran issue on their own. After all BHO is concerned for the Christians in the Middle East, especially since BHO is, you know…. a Christian.

The only reason Hillary’s gonna try the I/P peace talks is to show off her new hairdo.

How much you wanna bet the wheels come off this thing before they even have their first meeting?

And is ObaMao going to give another of those stellar post-dinner talks such as the one he gave at the iftar confab?

Man, Hillary looks beat in that clip. The well-modulated tones in her voice have taken their toll. The hairstyle is one of her least flattering.

With that cattiness aside, I hold little hope for a success in these talks, given Palestine’s instransigence. Bibi would be a fool to cede to these less-than-honorable players. I don’t think that he is a fool.

Maybe Hillary and ObaMao can broker a health care bill at the same time.

If you look carefully at the photo you’ll notice that Hillary is wearing one of those t-shirts that looks like a tuxedo. Slick bought it for her at a tourist trap after cruising the brothels on Bourbon Street. How romantic.

When Muslims want peace with Israel, there will be peace.

A liberal that blames Israel will not achieve peace.

Good summary, Steve Z.

I knew a Steve Z. who might have said those things … any chance you’re from PA?

I really want to comment on something non-superficial, but I simply cannot ignore how scary this woman is looking.

WH announces plans for cats and dogs to conduct peace talks. Mice everywhere voiced displeasure at being excluded from the negotiations.

In other news, the President signed an Executive Order that requires oil and water to mix in equal parts without an emulsifier. WH spokesman Gibbs had this to say: “For a long time, oil and water have always had a tendency to seperate, no matter how hard or long they were shaken together. Today, by decree, this practice is now at an end.”

Waste of time, but it will bring tv time to the face of a woman who voted to send the troops into harms way in Iraq, and then backpedaled in an attempt to appease the far left so that she could become POTUS. It’s her biggest offence (to date), but destroying other women’s reputations to cover for Bill is a big one too… As is falling in line behind Obama the America Hater.

She is a traitor plain and simple… That is all I ever see when I look at her.

Don’t know for sure, but would not be surprised if Obama’s PLO friends have already agreed to provide a fake diplomatic victory to parade before November (as if that will help).

Either that or it’s another millstone to tie to Hillary’s pasty neck.
