Russell Simmons on Ground Zero mosque: We didn’t blame all Christians for the first WTC bombing, did we?

posted at 2:12 pm on August 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Hengler, the GZM kerfuffle suddenly takes an … interesting turn. The debate’s raging on Twitter: Does this guy actually think the first World Trade Center bombing was the work of Christian fundamentalists? Or did he mean to say Oklahoma City, per the false leftist canard post-9/11 that McVeigh was some sort of Christian fanatic rather than an anti-government fanatic? Initially I thought it was the latter, but in referring to the “first World Trade attack,” he seems to have a very specific incident in mind. Is this the new narrative, maybe? Ramzi Yousef, “Christianist”?

Oh well. Clearly he’s bringing the sort of firm grasp on these issues that you’d want for a primetime current-events chat show. (Coming up tomorrow on Larry King: Bob Dole on hip-hop, maybe?) And this isn’t even the nuttiest mosque-related theory of the day: Apparently some of the Sunni clerics at Al-Azhar University find the Park51 project to be so foolish that at least one is speculating it’s … a Zionist conspiracy. Maybe that explains the “first World Trade attack” too?

In an article by United Kingdom’s “The Guardian” about McVeigh’s execution, we find this reference:

“In his letter, McVeigh said he was an agnostic but that he would “improvise, adapt and overcome”, if it turned out there was an afterlife. “If I’m going to hell,” he wrote, “I’m gonna have a lot of company.” His body is to be cremated and his ashes scattered in a secret location.”

“McVeigh faces day of reckoning.” The Guardian June 11th 2001.

On this issue of the mosque. Only these people are allowed to speak for me. The families who lost a loved one on that horrible day. Their opinion is the only one that matters.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIlCiX0LIqA

It has been a long time and a lot of people may have forgotten what that day felt like. These people feel that everyday. Look at their faces and you will see that the pain and sorrow never goes away. As a parent I cannot imagine what it is like to lose a child. I hope and pray that I never know that feeling. Putting that mosque near ground zero is like killing their loved ones all over again. It must be stopped.

McVeigh was an atheist.

sharrukin on August 19, 2010 at 3:31 PM

Nope. He would be best described as a theist. He stated that science was his religion and that he believed that a higher power created the universe and the laws of science.

Paraphrasing from the article linked below:

“In the book, “American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing”, authors Michel and Herbeck tell how McVeigh once “paid a visit to the local Seventh Day Adventist Church, but he found that service bored him … McVeigh had never been inclined to criticize people for their religious views, but he concluded that organized religion wasn’t really for him. He believed that the universe was guided by natural law, energized by some universal higher power that showed each person right from wrong if they paid attention to what was going on inside of them.” (emphasis mine.)

But the smoking gun is a quote by McVeigh himself regarding what he believed. Michel and Herbeck say that McVeigh would tell friends, “Science is my religion.” (emphasis mine.) To worship at the altar of science is, of course, idolatry and not Christianity.”

I bet if you looked into it, you’d find that some on the left did blame “Christians” for the 1993 WTC bombing, on the same premise used after 9/11. The “Christians made them do it” defense of radical Islamist attacks. It’s a companion to the “Jews made them do it” defense, and a subset of the “Americans made them do it” all-purpose defense.

Expanded Club Mix report:
–Tolerance requires you to “Shut up and take it!”, he said for the collective good.

The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, Rabbi Marc Schneier and Russell Simmons
:
–”Submit as a collective!”, he said — no individual rights.
–Shared Dreams From My (Marxist) Father?
–”It’s all your fault for not doing enough”, he said.
–Tell it to a Marine. (Maybe that American serviceman who adopted your ex-wife, Kimora’s mother, during the Korean War.)

“Rabbi To The Stars” is his media moniker. Honest:
Aug 15, 2010 · A randy rabbi accused of cheating on wife No. 4 was back before his Hamptons congregation Saturday, heading a Sabbath service before bolting from the synagogue.

Simmons and Kimora have since divorced (while separated, she got pregnant by an actor and has yet to marry the “baby daddy”), and Russell now has a clothing line in Wal-Mart. But you truly must read the following to understand him, I think. He married for you, the consumer. You masses are just starving for “the” brand of your soul. Four pages but at the end there is a 9/11 connection, and so much more:
Kimora Lee Simmons, the New Queen of Conspicuous Consumption

Oh, Larry Obi-King and CNN brass, The Elites are our only hope?

There is no reason to think that Upper West Siders can successfully project their values and interpretations onto people in other parts of the world.

Muslim extremists will join with Islamophobes in deeming it a Victory Mosque; moderates will insist it is not. And of course, given our Constitutional freedom of speech and worship, there will be no legal mechanism to ensure that today’s moderate founders won’t be replaced by tomorrow’s extremists.

The one-party media has tried very hard but Americans are not immune to the truth. Israel is a lesson in so many ways even if they refuse to editorialize it. I am not alone in not wanting America to take unnecessary “risks for peace” that never comes:

In the intifada that began in 2000, Palestinian terrorism killed more than 1,000 Israelis. As a portion of U.S. population, that would be 42,000, approaching the toll of America’s eight years in Vietnam. During the onslaught, which began 10 Septembers ago, Israeli parents sending two children to a school would put them on separate buses to decrease the chance that neither would return for dinner. Surely most Americans can imagine, even if their tone-deaf leaders cannot, how grating it is when those leaders lecture Israel on the need to take “risks for peace.”

Again Russell, tell it to a Marine. And don’t forget to thank him. Get back to me when Saudi Arabia “connects” and atones in deed for exporting fifteen of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers and offers to build in downtown Riyadh, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (the only house of worship felled in the cowardly attack). Is there anyone who can cut through Port Authority red tape like Sharia law? Really, shouldn’t someone of Arab extraction recognize the loss of the “Syrian Quarter” community treasure and shared history? (Hello Russell, “shared history” here.)

However, all I can still see is a hole at Ground Zero and newly discovered dead, so I’ll give George Will the last word: “Patronizing American lectures on the reality of risks and the desirableness of peace, which once were merely fatuous, are now obscene.”

FeFe on August 19, 2010 at 6:43 PM

… and others who challenged fastestslug: one big hole in his case is that “Christian Identity” is a grossly-misnamed movement that has nothing Christian about it and is repudiated by every Christian denomination, whether Catholic, Orthodox, mainline Protestant, or evangelical. CI is avowedly white supremacist and anti-Semitic and has ties to the Nazi movement, the “Aryan Republican Army,” and the KKK. It’s a fringe group built on racism and hate.

McVeigh reportedly had connections at a CI compound called “Elohim City” in eastern Oklahoma. The evidence of the connection is thin — he called a number there shortly after the bomb went off on 19 April — and has never been interpreted by those who know the case as meaning that he was tight with these folks or a member of CI. Some of the people there ran in anti-government circles, which is the best explanation of why McVeigh or Nichols would know them.

People unsatisfied with the official government version of events have keyed on Elohim City for years because it was penetrated by the FBI before the OKC bombing, and if CI twerps there were involved with McVeigh in the planning, they feel the FBI would have known.

(I have lots of family in OKC and went to high school there, which is how I come to be familiar with all this.)
