Bombshell: Olbermann debates guy who disagrees with him; Update: Compromise near on mosque location?

posted at 9:52 pm on August 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

Well, sort of disagrees with him. This is true-blue Howard Dean, who subscribes with Olby to 99 percent of leftist dogma — note the repeated knocks on Palin and right-wing hatemongers to prove his good faith — but who’s shootin’ for compromise on the endless drama surrounding the Ground Zero mosque. Dean-o’s message in a nutshell: Why can’t we get both sides together to talk about this? Naturally we should exclude neo-fascist conservatives from the discussion, but there are plenty of independents and centrist Democrats whose votes we need in November to whom we should be listening. To which Olby responds (at around 6:45), won’t that end up handing a victory to the damned wingnuts? Great point. I think they should label indies and centrist Dems “bigots,” walk away, and be done with it. Congressional majorities come and go, but sanctimony lasts forever.

Olby doesn’t raise this point (I think — I gave up on the clip after a few minutes), but in his semi-defense, any compromise involving a swap for state land would almost certainly be an Establishment Clause violation. I’ve been assuming that David Paterson only wanted to meet with the Park51 chiefs to lean on them a bit and maybe broker some sort of deal with another private entity, but if he’s thinking about bringing property owned by New York State into it, he’s starting up an entirely new clusterfark.

I once thought when GWB was President he should come out strongly against Child porn just to see if the Olbermann’s of the world would come out for it.

The left has a weakness for defining themselves as anti-Right and not pro-left. Olby gives away why the dems are into such deep sh*t on this mosque when he says. “We have to make sure the GZM is built or the right wins”. Really? Seems Dean is surprisingly aware that he shouldn’t define himself as just against what the right is for without at least checking his own views on it or the wisdom of alternatives.

This GZM is the crack pipe for Dems. They can’t stay away from the issue and let the right have the last word or take out one of their “noble” minority group members and they don’t have a winning argument when they speak. Then they get frustrated and yell bigot. The Dems are going to end up strung out on political correctness and in all probability get stiffed by this “moderate” Imam when he loses it like Jack Nicholson in a “Few Good Men”

YOU’RE G*D DAMN RIGHT I ORDERED THE CODE RED!!!!!!!!!!! I’D DO IT AGAIN!!!!

We need to be Tom Cruise at pre-trial. “I think I can get him to say it. I think he wants to say it and it is driving him crazy he has to lie about it”

Its about VOTES and whose votes are more needed in Nov 2010 ?

Why not make it a center for all religions to go in and out of each area if they want. This would be very inclusive and open up religion to all people who want to see it. A jew could walk, christian or muslim could walk in to the room next to him and observe.

and any place that discriminates will be shut down. I wonder who would lose first.

Two idiots having a pseudo-disagreement. Actually a “tolerance” pissing contest that seems to go on forever and full of propaganda and lies.

Besides, I am a proponent of religious freedom. But religions that deprive women of liberties or chop heads off are not religions in my book. Moderates muslims, if they truly exist, better get to work and fast.

The point is moot until islam can prove to the rest of the sane world it is a proper civilized religion.

The insane world as viewed above does not count.

Writing this as I listen to the pissing contest is making me queasy . . . .

Deans says American Muslims grievances from all the backlashes since 9/11 are equivalent to the dead kaffirs and their surviving families of 9/11. That is quite a statement.

I suppose he thinks the grievances could escalate to radicalization if the aggrieved are not appeased. And if you don’t have any dead ones from 9/11 in your immediate family, it isn’t any of your business.

What a disgusting coward Dean is.

The Port Authority is what we in NY/NJ call a quasi govt entity. It can use eminent domain, collect tolls and fees, and it has its own police dept that oversee bridges, tunnels, airports, bus terminals. They have the power of arrest and are considered peace officers in NY and NJ.Its directors are appointed by the two governors.

xkaydet65 on August 19, 2010 at 10:40 PM

Note to moderate Republicans: The most outspoken critic of this GZ mosque also happens to be the most effective critic of Obama’s economic policies: Sarah Palin.

In that case, its a very dangerous game being played by the dems. This strife and turmoil and pain being inflicted on 9-11 families and Americans in general is not even registering in the dem’s thought process. Everything is a game and everything has to be exploited for votes.
Anyone who has lived in a 3rd world country and prayed to GTH out of there to USA , will support me on this :
This is heading to a very very dangerous destination..God help our country

Not really. There have been eminent domain takings that were compensated for with land swaps, even with churches.

There’s good precedent for quashing any exchange of land for religious purposes.

If NYC won’t exchange land for a church, why should they for a mosque?

I loved how the thehill.com tried to be all even-handy and say that the mosque issue was just as bad for the right.

You have Nanzi Pelosi and Obacky taking a position that maybe 20% of the country agrees with and then doubling down when challenged. They can’t walk away from it now, but Patterson, in a fleeting moment of competence could in theory sorta defuse the situation if if he negotiates some sort of compromise.

This is beautiful – the fundamentals for the midterms are set – and now the left has to defend failure. And this mosque controversy just reminds everyone who these people are.

johnboy on August 20, 2010 at 8:28 AM

Geraldo wants this to go away and thus he reports this compromise but in reality this makes no sense. Why build “Cordoba” if you can’t have it close to Ground Zero?” Think that Muslims around the world are going to donate millions to build what is just another mosque in the world? No they won’t. The Wahhabi/Jihad money flows only for the trophy mosque.

Saltysam on August 20, 2010 at 10:37 AM

Geraldo said they would be willing to take a site “somewhere below Houston Street”, which probably would end the kerfuffle if the mosque was located between Houston and Canal streets.

There are basically three major east-west streets on the west side of Manhattan in the downtown area — anything below Chambers Street is without a doubt in the Ground Zero area, while between Chambers and Canal (5-10 blocks north of Ground Zero) the area is more smaller businesses/apartments/factories/lofts, where the mosque could be easily ignored by people going to the site of the attacks, instead of walking a block north of WTC 7 and running smack into it. Move it above Canal and the choking traffic going from the Holland Tunnel to the Manhattan Bridge, and you might as well be near the Midtown area for any direct, easy connection the site would have to Ground Zero.
