AP to reporters: No more references to “Ground Zero mosque”
posted at 6:49 pm on August 19, 2010 by Allahpundit
Fair enough, I guess. The building is not, in fact, at Ground Zero — although I’m not sure why not, given the various leftist arguments that putting up a mosque/Islamic community center as close as possible to the site of the attack is the greatest, most quintessentially patriotic thing ever. Rather, the building is two blocks north, which was close enough to have the landing gear from one of the jets crash into it on 9/11. (Jim Treacher suggests “Debris Field Mosque” instead.) But if we’re going to be sticklers, let’s be sticklers:
Here is some guidance on covering the NYC mosque story, with assists from Chad Roedemeier in the NYC bureau and Terry Hunt in Washington:
1. We should continue to avoid the phrase “ground zero mosque” or “mosque at ground zero” on all platforms. (We’ve very rarely used this wording, except in slugs, though we sometimes see other news sources using the term.) The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero, but two blocks away in a busy commercial area. We should continue to say it’s “near” ground zero, or two blocks away…
In short headlines, some ways to refer to the project include:
_ mosque 2 blocks from WTC site
_ Muslim (or Islamic) center near WTC site
_ mosque near ground zero
_ mosque near WTC site
Serious question: Why would the AP or the owners of the property object to it being thought of as the “Ground Zero mosque,” or at least the Ground Zero community center? Red State compiled a list of statements from the Park51 brain trust a few weeks ago emphasizing how important it was to them that the building had taken damage on 9/11. That’s what supposedly made the site so significant to “bridge-building” and “dialogue” about the attack, etc.
# A December 8th, 2009, New York Times article stated, “The location [next to Ground Zero] was precisely a key selling point for the group of Muslims,” and quoted Rauf as noting that they got a property “where a piece of the [9/11] wreckage fell.” ASMA then touted the piece in its 2009 Year End Report.
# A simple Google search of the Cordoba Initiative’s website reveals the phrase “Ground Zero” to be seeded throughout as a rather inept 1999-era SEO tactic to bring people looking for information about Ground Zero to the mosque promoters’ website.
# On May 5th and 6th, ASMA’s Daisy Khan was on her Twitter account, boasting first that the “new muslim center near ground zero gets unaminous vote of approval from community board one in downtown nyc,” and then that she had a “Media blitz day for ASMA / Cordoba [on the] muslim commuity center near ground zero.”
# On June 15th, Daisy Khan told the Washington Post’s Sally Quinn that “a divine hand” led to the Ground Zero proximity.
“Ground Zero mosque” versus “mosque near Ground Zero” seems an awfully fine hair to split when, presumably, there would be no more objection by mosque supporters to the former than there is to the latter. If tolerance is the name of the game, then a mosque at Ground Zero itself (next to the Freedom Tower if you like) is that much more stirring a statement of inclusion than one two blocks away. And as John Podhoretz notes, to America’s lasting shame, it’s not like there’s much happening at Ground Zero at the moment anyway. If the AP wants to spin on the owners’ behalf, presumably the progressive way to do it would be to insist that you’re damn right it’s a “Ground Zero mosque” and anyone who has a problem with that is a Skinwich-eating bigot who deserves to be investigated by Nancy Pelosi and Peter Beinart.
Speaking of intolerant neo-fascist wingnuts, here’s Howard Dean’s new piece at Salon imploring the left to mellow out already about his exceedingly mild point about respecting the feelings of victims. Pandering exit quotation: “No doubt the Republic will survive if this center is built on its current site or not. But I think this is a missed opportunity to try to have an open discussion about why this is a big deal, because it is a big deal to a lot of Americans who are not just right-wing politicians pushing the hate button again. I think those people need to be heard respectfully, whether they are right or whether they are wrong.”

Not fair enough… it IS at Ground Zero. The building it’s in was struck by debris from the airplanes.
So what’s AP’s (Associated Press’) point?
They’re admitting that if the Mosque were 25 feet closer that it would be wrong to build a Mosque there and the usage would be correct?
Or could it be that they could build the Mosque ON TOP OF the World Trade Center and they still wouldn’t call it the Ground Zero Mosque because that would be inflammatory?

There’s a debate about the Hiroshima bomb – that “Ground Zero” is a title that can only be assigned to the Shima Surgical Clinic – which is the site, over which, the bomb actually detonated.
However, it’s really a minority of folks who regard that strict definition of “ground zero” as valid. Most will tell you that all of Hiroshima is “Ground Zero”.
I realize no nuke was detonated on NYC – but I would expect that no definition of “Ground Zero” would be so strict as to exclude a building that was actually hit in the attacks.
So yes, it’s a fool’s argument to say that this thing isn’t on “ground zero”. It certainly is – especially since it was damaged in the attack.
Fools will still make an argument counter to that – so this “direction” from AP should surprise no one.

I’m still waiting for someone to explain how asking the developers of this mosque to build it somewhere else is an affront to their religious freedom. Do Peter Beinart, Nancy Pelosi et al think asking stores not to display Christmas trees or city halls not to display a manger scene is an affront to Christians? Their argument has always been that people can celebrate Christmas on their own time and property, they just can’t do it in those places, so what’s the difference here? They can build their mosque, just do it somewhere else.

They don’t. It’s standard journalism: You don’t let an object get named by its enemies. I would suspect the AP also doesn’t refer to “anti-choice” activists or “teabaggers.” If they ever did, then shame on them, but this general practice is par for the course for any serious journalistic outfit (e.g., AP as opposed to MSNBC). This is about having some standards, not about apologizing for Cordoba.

I took him back again last year. He found no place to commemorate what he had done before. All we found were Hooray for Obama tee shirts. Where there were once small hand held American flags? Gone. Tables upon tables of OBama ™ Merchandise.

I’m tired of the “two blocks is really big in NY” meme too.
Yes, distances are a bit distorted in Manhattan. When I had to evacuate from 200 water street dorm on 9/11, I walked all of 2 miles to my friends’ dorm at 3rd ave and 11th st and felt safe. If this had happened back home in Missouri, people would have evacuated a much greater distance, maybe 10+ miles, before feeling like there was enough distance between them and the attack.
That said, 2 blocks is not far enough to put it ‘out of the neighborhood’. The deli I went to when I was at 200 Water St was 2 blocks away on John Street. The pizza place I went to when I lived on St. Marks and A ave was 2 blocks away on 2nd ave.
Two blocks is not that far in NYC.

“Anti-choice” is the enemy label. “Anti-abortion” is an attempt at a neutral label describing a position. If they use “anti-abortion” and “pro-choice” in the same article, then that would be bad, but using “anti-abortion” on its own isn’t the same as using “anti-choice.”

Almost everyone succumbs, yet it still amuses me when folks (AP in this instance) become sticklers for precise language.
The proposed mosque is not at ground zero, yet Gitmo can be refered to as a Gulug, Illegal Aliens are refered to as undocumented workers, and a reduction in the rate of increase in entitlement spending is refered to as a funding cut.
In fact, these inconsistencies in linguistic precision reveal more about the bias of the speaker/writer/editor than anything else.
As Lileks said on the Hewitt show, when your roof is caved in due to scattering debris from the crashing planes and toppling towers, you are at ground zero.

Allowing Muslims to build a monument to their totalitarian religion on the ashes of innocent people is disgrace. Islam can’t be appeased. This will only encourage more attacks.
The ashes of 3,000 innocents murdered in the name of Islam are within the perimeter of the proposed site. The entire area should be declared a National Memorial and the sh*t for brains dhimmi left can then turn their attention to lying about something else.

Do not fix aim only on the flank Victory Mega Mosque as that would be a big mistake. The issue of the building of a Victory Mega Mosque at, or essentially at, Ground Zero is not the main issue, not even close. The main issue is should Americans continue to be so tolerant of something, Islam, that is so abhorrently intolerant itself, including, in the end, intolerant or the tolerant.
Turkey’s PM Erdogan: The mosques are our barracks, the domes are our helmets, the minarets are our swords, and the faithful are our army.
British philosopher Karl Popper, more than 50 years ago: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed and tolerance with them.
Tav on August 19, 2010 at 7:36 PM
I noticed last week that they were starting to include perimeters on the description of the Victory Mosque and assumed it was to lessen the impact of the location. Actually I am surprised they still call Ground Zero, Ground Zero. As to people not being heard, that seems to be standing operating procedure in the U.S. now days. The only time they care what the people think is when they ask who you will vote for, anything else, they know best.

Here’s how it works:
As long as the Muslim population remains around or under 2% in any given Country, they will be for the most part be regarded as a peace-loving Minority, and not as a threat to other citizens.
At 2% to 5%, they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and Disaffected groups, often with major recruiting from the jails and among Street gangs.
From 5% on, they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their Percentage of the population. For example, they will push for the Introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby Securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure On supermarket chains to feature halal on their shelves — along with Threats for failure to comply.
At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them To rule themselves (within their ghettos) under Sharia, the Islamic Law.
The ultimate goal of Islamists is to establish Sharia law over the Entire world.
When Muslims approach 10% of the population, they tend to increase Lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions. In Paris, we Are already seeing car-burnings. Any non-Muslim action offends Islam and Results in uprisings and threats, such as in Amsterdam, with opposition To Mohammed cartoons and films about Islam.
After reaching 20%, nations can expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad Militia formations, sporadic killings, and the burnings of Christian Churches and Jewish synagogues.
At 40%, nations experience widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, and ongoing militia warfare.
From 60%, nations experience unfettered persecution of non-believers of All other religions (including non-conforming Muslims), sporadic ethnic Cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon, and Jizya, the tax placed on infidels.
After 80%, expect daily intimidation and violent jihad, some State-run Ethnic cleansing, and even some genocide, as these nations drive out the Infidels, and move toward 100% Muslim.
100% will usher in the peace of ‘Dar-es-Salaam’ — the Islamic House of Peace. Here there’s supposed to be peace, because everybody is a Muslim, the Madrasses are the only schools, and the Koran is the only word.
Unfortunately, peace is never achieved, as in these 100% states the most radical Muslims intimidate and spew hatred, and satisfy their blood lust by killing less radical Muslims.

Technically, Ground Zero is the atom, (or subterranean column of atoms), in the absolute center of that pit. So if that’s their argument then I guess they can build anywhere but that spot.
If we allow this precedent then we’re going to have to allow the KKK to erect large, perpetually burning crosses in the middle of the black neighborhoods they burned down.

Part of the genius of Islam is the totality of Sharia, which includes a concept of war that attacks the host civilization at every aspect of its being. In modern times, the military power of Islam is weak, but this is more than compensated by its ability to attack along legal and cultural lines under the guise of being a religion.
As Sharia is applied to a society, the host civilization is annihilated in each and every manifestation of culture. This annihilation is demonstrated by a peculiar fact about the history of Islamic countries — part of it is missing. Afghanistan used to be a Buddhist civilization. We see its remnants in ruins and fragments such as the Bamiyan Buddhas, which were destroyed by the Taliban. Who knows the Buddhist history of Afghanistan? Practically speaking, it does not exist. Who knows the history of how Turkey, North Africa, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq went from being Christian to Islamic?
We don’t know the history because of the total annihilation of the past cultures by Sharia law. As time goes on, the customs, law, art, literature, and ethics of the host culture are replaced by Islamic values under the application of Sharia. The result is that there is nothing left of the history before the implementation of Sharia law.
There is a second aspect of this annihilation: the dhimmitude of the Kafirs (non-Muslims) remaining inside Islamic society. If you talk to Christians who are left in Islamic countries, they are an abused people who are unable to fight back after centuries of suffering and degradation under Sharia law. They are not supported by other Kafirs and are left to suffer under the oppression that will eliminate their few numbers. Whatever memory they have of the past is ignored by those who should be defending them.
If we are to go down the Sharia road, history teaches that it has always led to an Islamic mono-culture. In the end, there is no such thing as a little Sharia.

Yes, it is, and here’s why! (It has nothing to do with landing gear, either.)
The term Ground Zero was coined and defined in reference to the bombings at Nagasaki and Hiroshima and is defined as follows:
“Ground Zero” encompasses a one mile radius surrounding the actual pinpoint location of the explosion, the pinpoint location being known as the “epicenter”.
Therefore, the World Trade Center buildings were the EPICENTER on 9/11 and a radius of one mile surrounding the WTC epicenter IS and always WILL BE, GROUND ZERO.
