AP to reporters: No more references to “Ground Zero mosque”

posted at 6:49 pm on August 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

Fair enough, I guess. The building is not, in fact, at Ground Zero — although I’m not sure why not, given the various leftist arguments that putting up a mosque/Islamic community center as close as possible to the site of the attack is the greatest, most quintessentially patriotic thing ever. Rather, the building is two blocks north, which was close enough to have the landing gear from one of the jets crash into it on 9/11. (Jim Treacher suggests “Debris Field Mosque” instead.) But if we’re going to be sticklers, let’s be sticklers:

Here is some guidance on covering the NYC mosque story, with assists from Chad Roedemeier in the NYC bureau and Terry Hunt in Washington:

1. We should continue to avoid the phrase “ground zero mosque” or “mosque at ground zero” on all platforms. (We’ve very rarely used this wording, except in slugs, though we sometimes see other news sources using the term.) The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero, but two blocks away in a busy commercial area. We should continue to say it’s “near” ground zero, or two blocks away…

In short headlines, some ways to refer to the project include:

_ mosque 2 blocks from WTC site
_ Muslim (or Islamic) center near WTC site
_ mosque near ground zero
_ mosque near WTC site

Serious question: Why would the AP or the owners of the property object to it being thought of as the “Ground Zero mosque,” or at least the Ground Zero community center? Red State compiled a list of statements from the Park51 brain trust a few weeks ago emphasizing how important it was to them that the building had taken damage on 9/11. That’s what supposedly made the site so significant to “bridge-building” and “dialogue” about the attack, etc.

# A December 8th, 2009, New York Times article stated, “The location [next to Ground Zero] was precisely a key selling point for the group of Muslims,” and quoted Rauf as noting that they got a property “where a piece of the [9/11] wreckage fell.” ASMA then touted the piece in its 2009 Year End Report.
# A simple Google search of the Cordoba Initiative’s website reveals the phrase “Ground Zero” to be seeded throughout as a rather inept 1999-era SEO tactic to bring people looking for information about Ground Zero to the mosque promoters’ website.
# On May 5th and 6th, ASMA’s Daisy Khan was on her Twitter account, boasting first that the “new muslim center near ground zero gets unaminous vote of approval from community board one in downtown nyc,” and then that she had a “Media blitz day for ASMA / Cordoba [on the] muslim commuity center near ground zero.”
# On June 15th, Daisy Khan told the Washington Post’s Sally Quinn that “a divine hand” led to the Ground Zero proximity.

“Ground Zero mosque” versus “mosque near Ground Zero” seems an awfully fine hair to split when, presumably, there would be no more objection by mosque supporters to the former than there is to the latter. If tolerance is the name of the game, then a mosque at Ground Zero itself (next to the Freedom Tower if you like) is that much more stirring a statement of inclusion than one two blocks away. And as John Podhoretz notes, to America’s lasting shame, it’s not like there’s much happening at Ground Zero at the moment anyway. If the AP wants to spin on the owners’ behalf, presumably the progressive way to do it would be to insist that you’re damn right it’s a “Ground Zero mosque” and anyone who has a problem with that is a Skinwich-eating bigot who deserves to be investigated by Nancy Pelosi and Peter Beinart.

Speaking of intolerant neo-fascist wingnuts, here’s Howard Dean’s new piece at Salon imploring the left to mellow out already about his exceedingly mild point about respecting the feelings of victims. Pandering exit quotation: “No doubt the Republic will survive if this center is built on its current site or not. But I think this is a missed opportunity to try to have an open discussion about why this is a big deal, because it is a big deal to a lot of Americans who are not just right-wing politicians pushing the hate button again. I think those people need to be heard respectfully, whether they are right or whether they are wrong.”

Just one more example of what we face trying to get straight news from these people. They wonder why they are losing circulation or viewers for TV. When they will only name Republicans in bad stories and then you see them try to guide the narrative like this, what do they expect. We are not all stupid!

“Anti-choice” is the enemy label. “Anti-abortion” is an attempt at a neutral label describing a position. If they use “anti-abortion” and “pro-choice” in the same article, then that would be bad, but using “anti-abortion” on its own isn’t the same as using “anti-choice.”

calbear on August 19, 2010 at 7:23 PM

It’s still a negative connotation. “For abortion rights” and “against abortion “rights” ”

It frames the argument in the leftists favor.

“But if we’re going to be sticklers, let’s be sticklers”

Yeah, let’s be sticklers. The World Trade Center 7, has always been considered part of the WTC Complex. The 47 story building, thought to have caught fire when Tower 2 fell, it burned for 7 hours before collapsing at around 5:20 PM. WTC 7 is one block from the Burlington Coat Factory site.

So, it’s one block away not two.

But I agree with faraway [on August 19, 2010 at 6:54 PM]; Mohammed Atta’s plane hit the the Burlington Coat Factory, so it’s part of Ground Zero!

For those stickling supporters who might argue, “But, their intention was to hit Tower 1 and Tower 2.” Well they were hoping the Towers would fall over, not collapse upon themselves. They were really disappointed when that didn’t happen. So, if we’re going by the terrorists’ intentions to identify the ground zero footprint then let’s layout the Towers lengthwise and find the radius.

If “we” must be sticklers, then sticklers we must be.

That’s right, How-weird Dean. It is a big effin’ deal where that sharia law library will be built. The site in question is located in a commercial area, not a residential one. Its encroachment near the site of an attack on our nation is an affront.

New York City has about 100 Mosques. Unless I am missing something there is not a 70% outcry to remove them. The attempt to turn this into something that it is not by the left is just wrong and dishonest.

Islam is a more totalitarian system than even Nazism was. Think about it. The Nazis mainly left woman alone. Men weren’t told whether to wear a beard or how many times to pray and in what direction. They didn’t much care about peoples sex lives. They wanted to take over Europe but not the world. Islam wants to control all aspects of life and wants to take over the whole world.

Tav on August 19, 2010 at 8:09 PM

Whether we’re at war with Eurasia or Eastasia, in the end, doesn’t matter. Big Brother doesn’t really care. It’s a loyalty test. “Colored people” vs. “people of color,” “poor” vs. “under-privileged,” etc., it doesn’t matter from a linguistic standpoint: the terms signify the same things. Whether someone make use of the accepted vocabulary though, give those in power a way to gauge the degree to which an individual police his own thoughts.

It’s not the message. It’s what it STANDS for. It’s not the words. It’s what they STAND for.

The reason they don’t want to call it the Ground Zero Mosque is the same reason we couldn’t utter the word “Hussein” in the context of Barack and Obama for six months. They KNOW that WORDS HAVE MEANING. So they are trying to separate the words from the meaning they don’t want you/us to understand.

Don’t fall for it. USE THE WORDS THAT ARE THE CLOSEST to the meaning you are trying to convey.

How about “Victory Mosque”? Would that make them feel better about it?

I don’t believe this is people being sticklers. How many here, or around the country remember exactly what they were doing that day? I do. I remember every emotion, every tear, every thing that day, and for weeks afterward.

It amazes me the lack of compassion some feel for not only the victims, and their families, but as America as a whole. Obviously these same people that hurl a slur on those of us opposed to this, agree with the Imam. America deserved this. It should come as no surprise that the media wants to move the narrative and whitewash what is going on.

Remember how a few months after 9/11 no pictures or video of 9/11 were allowed to be shown, not to upset or infuriate the American public and have us remember 9/11.

And when is the last time anyone mentioned the first 9/11 attack? Back when the Islamists were at war with us, but we didn’t notice. Or care.

Kind of like the mood we are going back to now. Leave them alone and they will leave us alone. Extend our hand to them and maybe they won’t cut it off.

The Greek Orthodox church was a major influence in keeping the communists from winning the Greek civil war. They refused to even bury the dead commies. The left hate their 4sses.

If the mosque is built, will it be subject to local property tax?

Barnestormer on August 20, 2010 at 1:54 PM

Compromise….

Go back to the original name, slightly nuanced.

Unfortunately the folks at the Agitator say anyone opposed to the Cordoba House is a bigot. And BTW, only New Yorkers get a say. Unless they are the 64% of New Yorkers opposed. Then they are bigots too.

It should come as no surprise that the media wants to move the narrative and whitewash what is going on.

Remember how a few months after 9/11 no pictures or video of 9/11 were allowed to be shown, not to upset or infuriate the American public and have us remember 9/11.

The day it happened, I had two VCRs running, on broadcast and satellite. I was getting ready to go to work (flex time)when I happened to tune in the local NBC affiliate just in time to see the Today Show hosts say something had happened at the WTC. I hit Record on one VCR that had been set up for timer-taping a movie at 2 AM local, then shoved a blank tape in the second, turned it on Fox News Channel, and hit Express Record- meaning both tapes ran until they ran out. Both caught the second plane’s impact. I then left for work, and enroute learned that Tower One had collapsed.

I spent the rest of the day listening to the car radio as the “situation developed”.

I still have those tapes. I don’t watch them. I don’t need to. My memory of that day is very sharp and clear, and always will be.

My emotions were the same then as they are now. As Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said when he learned that the Pearl Harbor attack had gone in before the official message was delivered to the U.S. government, thus making it officially a sneak attack;

I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve.

I was not angry then, nor am I now. I admit that I was surprised something similar hadn’t happened earlier. (Read Debt of Honor by Tom Clancy and Storming Heaven by Dale R. Brown, and you’ll see why.) Also, I firmly believe Sun-Tzu was correct when he said that a general must never let anger affect his perceptions, because anger clouds reason. I prefer to let my enemy become angry; then he is not operating at maximum efficiency.

I said then that those responsible had openly made war upon us in the name of “jihad”- which is by no stretch of the imagination a “peaceful inner struggle”. I also note that, also in the name of “jihad”, Islamists kill “moderate Muslims” with even more alacrity than they do “infidels”. (I would point out that the Nazis’ victims included great numbers of Germans whom they considered “inferior”- there’s a reason there are few Jews in Germany today, and that’s it.) Which means that by the jihadis’ standards, no one but themselves are fit to live, except perhaps as their slaves. (Something their co-religionists should consider very carefully.)

To my mind, since they had now openly started attacking us, on our own soil, it was time to take the gloves off.

They wish war? So be it. If there is one thing we Americans do well, it is war. (As John Ringo has said, ask the Indians, the Germans, and the Japanese how well we do that.)

The “enlightened elite’” want to forgive, forget, and roll over and play dead. Some of them think they can co-opt radical Islam into helping them build their Brave New World. (Ask Spanish historians how well that works, sometime.)

Others don’t care about what happens to the rest of the world, as long as they get to be the lords of creation here. (Ask the Byzantine Empire about that one; oh, wait, you can’t, because it doesn’t exist anymore.)

Whatever their “motivation”, 70% of the rest of America isn’t buying the spiel. Because they know a con game when they see one.

I am part of that 70%.

I think “Ground Zero Mosque” is correct because it is, indeed, a Ground Zero Mosque or a mosque being attempted to be built at Ground Zero. Maybe “Obama’s Ground Zero Mosque,” though, that’d work.

I can’t see letting Aljazeera Press rule the use of words among our, so-far, still English-language West.

How about, “We Lied About Not Being the Ground Zero Mosque“?

Lourdes on August 20, 2010 at 6:33 PM

Might I suggest that Atta’s Pimps, I mean Associated Press have a contest to re-name the Ground Zero mosque?

For starters, here’s some I haven’t seen before:

Bin Laden Center

Mohammed Atta Memorial

Mosque de Triomphe

Imam Obama Cultural Center

Trojan Horse Infidel Re-education Center

9/11 The Falling Man Part 8 / 8

“…One of the reasons why I became so determined to plumb the meaning of The Falling Man was that we can’t hope to understand these incredible times unless we look at these images and accept the witness of these images.

“I mean, that, looking at The Falling Man and to discuss it is the only option that we have, given that there IS a falling man.”

Good post.

Yes, like you, the memories of that morning while we worried about 2 of my brothers-in-law and the weeks afterwards as my friend learned her Port Authority cop husband was lost and was not in some air pocket in a seperate building (as someone thought they saw him there) will never be forgotten by me.

They found the audio of his last words as the building fell on him, “Mayday, mayday!”

Today’s media receives it’s talking points from the Obama White House and the DNC. They have lost their creditability with a large number of Americans. This is why Fox News and talk radio has become so popular. Of course, Fox News and talk radio is hated by the left and democrats. Why, because they tell the truth of what is actually going on. One thing we should all be thankful for is on Sept. 11, 2001, George W. Bush was President and Rudy Giuliani was Mayor of New York. Obama would have went to Sandi Arabia and bowed to King Fahd and apologized and no telling what Bloomberg would have done and said. Remember before they caught the Times Square bomber he blamed it on an angry white person upset over obamacare. The nephew of king Fahd tried to give Rudy Giuliani a check for 10 million in Oct of 2001 and Rudy told him where to stick it.

I think of it as “the Middle Finger mosque.” If everybody called it that, they might get the point. If they build it, they have the right to, but it’s still a huge affront to most Americans.
