Operation Iraqi Freedom is over

posted at 9:18 pm on August 18, 2010 by Allahpundit

The last combat troops are out and now 50,000, er, “advisors” remain. It’s not the end of the war, in other words, but as a not-so-grim milestone for a lot of guys who are no longer in harm’s way, it’s a moment worth celebrating. Rather than waste your time by blathering at you, let me give you some reading and viewing material. Watch the two clips below from NBC, which, to its credit, did a bang-up job in covering the occasion. And note well Col. Jack Jacobs’s reminiscence about being sent to Vietnam after combat had supposedly ended there too. The fighting isn’t over yet; the question is who’ll be doing it from now on. And the NYT has an answer sure to please liberals of all stripes: “Mercenaries.”

To protect the civilians in a country that is still home to insurgents with Al Qaeda and Iranian-backed militias, the State Department is planning to more than double its private security guards, up to about 7,000, according to administration officials who disclosed new details of the plan. Defending five fortified compounds across the country, the security contractors would operate radars to warn of enemy rocket attacks, search for roadside bombs, fly reconnaissance drones and even staff quick reaction forces to come to the aid of civilians in distress, the officials said…

The department’s plans to rely on 6,000 to 7,000 security contractors, who are also expected to form “quick reaction forces” to rescue civilians in trouble, is a sensitive issue, given Iraqi fury about shootings of civilians by American private guards in recent years. Administration officials said that security contractors would have no special immunity and would be required to register with the Iraqi government. In addition, one of the State Department’s regional security officers, agents who oversee security at diplomatic outposts, will be required to approve and accompany every civilian convoy, providing additional oversight.

It’s the State Department’s show now, on an “unprecedented” scale for such a dangerous area. But can they run it with so few troops left in the country if the electoral stalemate between Maliki’s and Allawi’s factions blows up? (Ryan Crocker: “Our timetables are getting out ahead of Iraqi reality.”) That’s the story you want to read if you’re interested in the “what now?” angle. If you’re looking for something more human, i.e. troop reactions on finally getting to leave, MSNBC’s and WaPo’s pieces are the way to go. A quote from the latter:

“Operation Iraqi Freedom ends on your watch!” exclaimed Col. John Norris, the head of the brigade.

“Hooah!” the soldiers roared, using an Army battle cry…

“They’re leaving as heroes,” Norris said of his soldiers. “I want them to walk home with pride in their hearts.”…

“I hope this becomes a place where I can come back in 25 years,” said Hitchcock, the sergeant. “But other than that, I’m glad it’s over. I’m glad it’s ending. I’m glad we can stop sending people here.”

Now we wait for a decision on Iran.

Update: Whatever happens going forward, they’re not coming back. From CNN:

Two-thirds of Americans favor President Obama’s plan to remove combat troops from Iraq by the end of the month as opposition to the war in that country, as well as the one in Afghanistan, has climbed to new highs.

According to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey, Obama’s withdrawal plan wins support not because Americans think the U.S. has achieved its goals in Iraq – only three in 10 feel that way – but because a majority believe that the U.S. will never achieve its goals in that country no matter how long troops remain there.

That’s one reason why 69 percent oppose the war in Iraq – the highest amount of opposition in any CNN poll.

bnelson44 on August 18, 2010 at 9:31 PM

I’ll repeat what I said at AoSHQ and add that I hope the Indonesian Imbecile doesn’t screw this up:

I hope the hard fought battles weren’t for naught. It takes time to build a military. Not only from an equipment outlook, but from an experience standpoint; which I believe is more important.

I participated in OIF II as part of B Co. 57th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade. I completed my eight year obligation after that and moved to Champaign, Il afterwards.

All of my friends here all of the liberal persuasion. Every once in a while, one of them will ask me if I think my sacrifice was worth it. I tell them the following:

When I was in South Korea, I traveled all over the country. On my of my adventures, I was on a subway and an elderly gentlemen boarded my car. All the seats were full. As a rule, Koreans don’t get up and allow the elderly to sit in such a situation. I called out to him, “Ogashi”, stood up and gestured to him to take me seat.

He looked at me, and asked in very broken English (I was in a place that wasn’t populated with US service troops) “Soldja….Soldja”?

I nodded. He became excited. He asked in Korean if anyone spoke English. A young KATUSA (Korean Augmented Troop U. S. Army) came up. The KATUSA translated for me that the man was a teenager during the Korean War. He saw US soldiers fighting and dieing so that he could live free. I could tell he was becoming choked up, and after he was done, the old man hugged me with tears in his eyes.

He wouldn’t let me give him my seat. Afterwards, several Koreans offered them their seats.

After I get done telling my friends that, they sit in silence, and I tell them that every god-damned second of it was worth it.

I pray every night that some young Iraqi boy fifty years from now can tell my grandson a similar tale.

Blarg the Destroyer on August 18, 2010 at 9:31 PM

The whole ‘non-combat’ designation is falacious. Even the Associated Press acknowledges that these non-combat troops will: 1) carry weapons; 2) go out on “missions” with Iraqi troops.

This is just another Obama shell game.

Robert_Paulson on August 18, 2010 at 9:31 PM

State Dept ie Hillary is going to run compounds, radar, look for roadside bombs, fly drones, and do QRF?

Maybe this is why Gates is leaving….

Too many fights between State and Defense and Defense just gave them the whole ball of turd and challenged them to do it better than our troops.

Thank you for the sentiment. It is very much appreciated, especially from someone like you.

However, let me be the first to dispose of the notion that I am a hero. I am the furthest thing from such. Heroes are people whom face extraordinary situations everyday without looking for adoration or compensation.

What I did, I did not for adoration, but I was compensated. I was a trained professional, with a purpose and carried out my job for an agreed upon compensation.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity for the experiences the Army granted me.

The hero is not the cop who patrols the street, not the firefighter who rushes into a burning building, or the soldier that goes to war.

If you want to know true heroism, let me introduce you to Mr. and Mrs. Lierow.

These are the same people who gleefully kept marking the 1,000th American troop death in Iraq, followed by #2,000, #3,000, and #4,000. I can find no previous examples in American history where so called “objective news organizations” ever kept so close track of such a relatively small number of people.

At the same time, they never reported that in the 8 years Bill Clintoon was “Commander in Chief”, well over 4,000 American troops died in non combat situations

Operation Iraqi Freedom is over

Originally it was going to be called Operation Iraqi Liberation, but that name was dropped for obvious reasons. Now, it may have at one time been liberation, as from Saddam, but has it ever honestly been Freedom, what most Americans anyway regard as freedom anyway, with Islamic/Shariah Law enshrined in the American sponsored Iraqi constitution? Is this, and Afghanistan, and the like, similar to what Pyrrhus had in mind when he said, “More such victories will utterly undo me”?

I studied the Koran a great deal. I came away from that study with the conviction there have been few religions in the world as deadly to men as that of Muhammad. So far as I can see, it is the principal cause of the decadence so visible today in the Muslim world and, though less absurd than the polytheism of old, its social and political tendencies are in my opinion to be feared, and I therefore regard it [Islam] as a form of decadence rather than a form of progress in relation to paganism itself.

BTW, Alexis de Tocqueville also said, No protracted war can fail to endanger the freedom of a democratic country.

And Sun Tzu said, There has never been a protracted war from which a country has benefited.

Are you listening, Barack “King Hussein Louie” Obama and General David “Code Pink ROE” Petraues?

Both Alexis de Tocqueville and Sun Tzu were a hell of a lot smarter than either of you two yard birds will ever be, so maybe you should listen to them.

Total cost of war in Iraq:

880,000,000,000 (1)

Total number of “Jihadis” killed (that includes Al Qaeda in Iraq, non-Al-Qaeda insurgents in Iraq, and even some Shi’a, especially in the Jaish-e-Mahdi of Moqtada al-Sadr, and even a few Kurds in the Ansar al-Sunna in Iraq, obviously inflating the total):

20,000 (2)

Now divide (1) by (2).

The correct answer gives us the cost, per Jihadi killed, in 2007 American dollars:

$44,000,000

That’s it: $44,000,000 per Jihadi killed.

And this is as of more than two years ago!

Rumor has it he’s a cannoneer

I hear he’s steely as you please
He could be Samurai Japanese

He may be shrewd
He may be crude
Ah well, it’s hard to tell
Who is Colonel Allen West, pray tell?

The Obama statists may think he comes from Hell
But he may come from somewhere just around the dell
But he will be here and he will be there
You could see him giving the Obama statists hell most any time and most anywhere

He meddles with the Obama statist devolution
Stomping them mightily throughout each week
Spoiling every Obama statists’ lying elocution
La, what cheek!

I like that one and in some ways it’s true. The west hasn’t gotten feudal on anyone for a long time.

sharrukin on August 18, 2010 at 10:50 PM

I can’t believe I’m going to say this after b!tching earlier about how often The Won is on TV, but shouldn’t he have acknowledged this landmark. Shouldn’t he honor the troops and their dedication? What is he doing tonight?

Cindy Munford on August 18, 2010 at 10:03 PM

To be honest I’m surprised he wasn’t on TV taking credit for all of this.

gophergirl on August 18, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Congrats and welcome home to our American Heroes.

Thank you President Bush for doing what was right – not what was popular but what was right.

gophergirl on August 18, 2010 at 10:59 PM

My husband just got there. I will celebrate when he comes home safe and sound from his “non-combat” deployment.

sammypants on August 18, 2010 at 9:26 PM

Thanks to him and you for your service. I will pray every night for his safe return.

gophergirl on August 18, 2010 at 11:01 PM

Remember when things were going well in Somalia but then Klintoon took over and started bringing Troops home? I pray history will not repeat itself.

Thank you, Troops, for making the world a safer place.

Tony737 on August 18, 2010 at 11:01 PM

We propped up yet another self-eviscerating Islamic state and put in a Sharia Law Constitution.

Was that worth dying for?

Bomb from the air and let them sort out their own homicidal schismic stupidities from now on.

We gained next to nothing from all our sacrifice of blood and treasure.

Except a first hand glimpse of unpretending Muslims, up close, by members of our military and contractors’ services.

That kind of visceral intelligence may be worth something when we are dragged deeper into the civilizational battle with Islamic imperialism.

gophergirl on August 18, 2010 at 10:57 PM

My guess is that if he could have taken credit for it, he would have been on TV. I guess the hypocrisy of calling it unjust for eight years then claiming victory was too much even for him. It still would have been nice to acknowledged the milestone, remember the lost and thank those that served and continue to serve in their new role. He’s just stupid.

Cindy Munford on August 18, 2010 at 11:12 PM

Thank you, George Bush, for doing everything it took to make OIF a success!

Thank you, George Bush, for doing everything it took to make OIF a success!

So you would call the first four years a learning curve, I suppose?

I’ll wait until then to celebrate too.

Hopefully President Obama remembered to fax this info to the other team and not just make it an internal memo.

I’d hate to think we’re unilaterally declaring an end to fighting for purely political reasons.

BadgerHawk on August 18, 2010 at 11:22 PM

You would think the Commander in Chief of these troops would take time out from his vacation to give a small speech (he’s pretty good at that) to the nation to announce that our heroes are coming home.

Cindy Munford on August 18, 2010 at 11:42 PM

I’m not getting into the merits of the war itself (suffice it to say, Iraq was no WWII). But it’s pretty much a fact that the strategy in the early going left much to be desired.

YYZ on August 18, 2010 at 11:46 PM

Well yeah, obviously. We tried to fight a war on the cheap and it didn’t work out. Several important lessons can be learned from that.

YYZ on August 18, 2010 at 11:46 PM

Maybe you can enlighten us by explaining which war in our history was fought perfectly.

……and where was the master plan put forth by the democrats in fighting the wars they voted for…..I mean besides yelling surrender and withdrawing.

If you watched Fox News all night, would you even know that this was happening?

YYZ on August 18, 2010 at 11:05 PM

What happened to the Soldier death countdown that MSNBC had on their front page for years while Bush was President…..

…..since Obama has become President….it’s disappeared.

Guess you liberals can’t score any political points with our Soldiers death’s when a democrats in the White House….
…..How Progressive!!!!

YYZ on August 18, 2010 at 11:46 PM

….this would be a great point if Mrs. Munford had declared that Iraq was WWII….
…..since she did not…..
…..maybe you could address her obvious point that WWII had many mistakes that costs the lives of tens of thousands of Soldiers and civilians. Also had some major human rights violations by the same FDR that democrats love to put Obama in the same league with.

You democrats had years to show the world a better plan at a cheaper cost in Iraq……yet the only thing liberals came up with was “surrender”……

……once again….think God we had smarter and stronger people in charge to overcome the ignorance and politicization by democrats of the war in Iraq.

Baxter Greene on August 19, 2010 at 12:34 AM

50,000 and no “combat” troops? Who is zer0 fooling. You know the place is crawling with SOCOM forces.

Mojave Mark on August 19, 2010 at 12:52 AM

Something about this seriously pisses me off. I’ve been there, and I know a good number of people here have, perhaps numerous times. Somehow, I don’t think we were given every opportunity to seriously make the kinds of gains that would turn out more than just a third of Americans knowing that we not only did our job, but met our objectives.

Captain Kirock on August 19, 2010 at 1:50 AM

my own notes:

General McKinley- Chief. National Guard Bureau
Sunday 8-8-2010 St. Louis @ EANGUS conference

Only thing that can take this country down is loss of will, do not give in to those who say that the era of American superpower is waning, our hopes rest upon the shoulders of these young troops. I felt enthusiasm because the security on the road to airport was being carried out by Iraqi military. Iraq has potential to own its own destiny. Afghanistan, were in the middle of something great, the enemy is digging in, we’ll be there a while, all your states were representing you. Two vastly different theathtres. The national guard will asked to stay longer in these areas, development team, civilian occupations, the guard will be in demand for ears to come.”

I know words are not much, but I do thank our troops from the bottom of my heart.

And to the world, the US is no imperial democracy. It went in and it came out.

And to Brian Williams, you are just a talking head. Talking about “emptying” rifles in the first segment. Jeebus!

Empty head more like it.
