Obama: “No regrets” on weighing in on Ground Zero mosque

posted at 4:17 pm on August 18, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Greg Hengler, a silly question gets a silly answer. How else could he respond? “Why yes, in light of the catastrophic polling on this issue for my party, I should have avoided even the lame, equivocating statement I gave initially”? His disapproval rating has been creeping up in Gallup ever since he weighed in, rising from 48 percent last week to a siren-worthy 52 percent today. Of course he regrets it. But now he’s stuck with it, so here’s his — very — perfunctory show of resoluteness in the face of self-generated adversity.

The media meme du jour, naturally enough, is that the mosque debate is causing an intra-party crack-up — on the right. Our Democratic president is at odds with our Democratic Senate majority leader, and our Democratic Speaker of the House has lost her ever-lovin’ mind, and meanwhile national polls show even a majority of Democrats in opposition to the mosque, and yet … somehow it’s conservatives who have been torn apart by this issue. Good work, Politico. So batty have liberals become, in fact, that supposedly clear-eyed, battle-hardened, bottom-line political operative Mark Halperin is now screaming for Obama to wade in further on the mosque’s behalf instead of shutting up until this goes away:

HALPERIN’S TAKE: Really??!! Another presidential comment on this sensitive matter made on the fly in response to a press question? The political and substantive damage will continue until Obama explains his position in detail and (in a dignified and uplifting way) explains why his critics are wrong. This is a classic case of a politician losing control of his public image on a key issue — only in this instance, it has implications for the whole world.

I think a long windy lecture from The One explaining to the 65 percent of the public that opposes the mosque why they’re xenophobic yokels is just what the doctor ordered for a midterm rebound. On a serious note, though, I do agree with Rove and various other GOP strategists that it’d be foolish (and potentially destructive) for Republican pols to hammer this issue too hard. I think centrists and indies are looking, above all, for seriousness of purpose from the GOP about digging the country out of the near-bottomless pit of Obamanomics, especially given the rap on the party in the past for getting “sidetracked” with cultural issues. For every one part mosque messaging, I’d prefer 10 parts messaging on jobs and the economy. Besides, Democrats are in full meltdown over this anyway; if any indies are ripe for the picking on the mosque issue, it’ll be the spectacular idiocy and sneering contempt of Madam Speaker and her colleagues that turns them to the GOP, not anything coming from Newt Gingrich. Rock on, Nancy!

I bet many Dems have regrets

faraway on August 18, 2010 at 4:21 PM

One needs a conscience to be able to have regrets.

General Robert E. Lee: “No regrets” at having crossed into Pennsylvania.

carbon_footprint on August 18, 2010 at 5:11 PM

Landing gear fell through the roof. I’d call that “Ground Zero.”

There are more than a hundred mosques in the five boroughs. Isn’t that enough? Is there really a need to build an obviously triumphalist structure like this less than two blocks from the WTC? Put the talking points aside, pull your head out of your ass and realize what’s happening here.

[Cicero43 on August 18, 2010 at 4:45 PM]</blockquote]

Yup, their building at ground zero.

Al Qaeda was hoping the towers would fall over, not collapse upon themselves as they did. Debris was thrown for blocks when the towers did collapse.

Park 51 is not building on the WTC site but they are at Ground Zero. You can see that in these photos.

Dusty on August 18, 2010 at 5:11 PM

GOP candidates needn’t harp on the mosque issue. Focus instead on Obama and the Dems’ repeatedly poking a stick in middle America’s eye.

Obama spoke out because, in his eye, the “clingers” were about to embarrass him and the elites again in the eyes of the world.

Since 9/11 liberals have constantly referred to Americans’ backlash against Muslims…even though there has never been any such thing. When Fort Hood or the Christmas bomber happen, the first thing Obama and liberals do is start lecturing us about how this doesn’t reflect on all Muslims and we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

And then there’s Arizona…we’re all just a bunch of clingers who hate/fear those who “don’t look like us”. And the Tea Parties…those could only be instigated by racial animus toward a black president.

Republicans should tap into American’s deep down understanding that their president and Congressional leaders hold us in contempt, find us embarassing, and think that, deep down, we’re violent racists.

All the GOP needs to say is that this president seems to always assume the worst of his fellow Americans. And they’ve figured it out.

For apologists for Islam, please allow me to set the record straight:

Islam is NOT a religion!!! Please burn that FACT into your fevered brow!

Religion is part of Islam, but just a part!

There is NO separation between the “religious” and the “political” in Islam…..

The goal of Islam is the establishment of a world caliphate and the imposition of shari’a law as dictated by the Qur’an and enforced by Islam “authorities.”

To those of you raising your voices in a chorus of apologies for Islam, be advised that under shari’a law, unless you are already a Muslim, you will have three choices: 1. Convert to Islam; 2. Submit to Islam [dhimmitude]; or, 3. Death! I reject all three choices!

If you believe Islam is a “religion of peace,” please try to understand the Islam definition of PEACE:

From the Qur’an: “The world will be at PEACE only when Islam and shariah reign in every country ~~ and NEVER until then!”

Any questions, Tom Shipley???

HalJordan on August 18, 2010 at 5:12 PM

And there’s tons of misinformation and demonization about Rauf and his organization floating around out there that “moderate” republicans like Allah and Ed ignore while stoking the flames of opposition to the center.

Tom_Shipley on August 18, 2010 at 4:41 PM

I can only come to the conclusion that Tom_Shipley is Rauf. He defends him like his own father or something.

Either that or he’s progressed well beyond Dhimi 101 and is doing graduate work.

Suddenly, with those words, I have awoken from my stupor, and see the truth. Tom Shipley is right. My God how could I have been so blind, and stupid!?!?

Ok…fantasy time over. Back to work!

Geeze Tom. Take a class. He wants sharia law, and he blames us for 9/11. What more do you need? They even turned down Governor Patterson to sit down and discuss a new location. So much for tolerance, and building bridges. They want their tower of triumph, come hell, or high water.

As a woman, with a daughter, a mother, sisters, friends…I am offended by Islam. I will neither submit, or convert to it. I do not believe for one moment God put woman on earth to be treated as less than animal, nor to submit to the abuses of mens whims.

Sounds to me like Tom wants Sharia law. Think Tom would defend any other religion as vigorously as Islam? Methinks not.

darwin on August 18, 2010 at 5:18 PM

I agree with Halperin that he needs to. I think a lot of the opposition to it is based on misinformation.

Tom_Shipley on August 18, 2010 at 4:41 PM

Agreeing with Halperin won’t advance your case here. The guy openly advocated the media employing a double standard in the 2004 Presidential election that favored the “candidate” you voted for, the clown from Beacon Hill. And earlier this year, he accused O’bama’s critics of being “racists”. In addition, his Dad Mort hates America almost as much as O’bama does.

As for your second claim, a lot of the stuff your side of the aisle is using is misinformation too, such as the claim that there is already a mosque at the Pentagon (there isn’t), your refusal to admit that pieces of one of the 9/11 planes landed where the new mosque is going to be built, and so on. Just yesterday, your fellow bridge-dweller crr6 claimed with a straight face that the planned structures wasn’t even really going to be a mosque, even though the developers say a mosque will be built there on their own website.

Del Dolemonte on August 18, 2010 at 5:20 PM

Obama can just keep on sayin he has ‘no regrets,’ but the mosque approving lefties (not to be confused with the many there who also disapprove) are going bonkers at some prog sites because this mosque thing is really hurting The One. (I lurk so you don’t have to…)

They are busy blaming Pam Geller, and, like Pelosi, looking all over for boogeymen…when (drumroll) the guy who really sent this issue into hyperspace, the guy who singlemouthedly made this mosque thing a national issue…

was none other than their own narcissist-in-chief, ‘gee I really want to brown-up these Muslim-folk tonight’, Obama-god.

There’s something delicious about this.

marybel on August 18, 2010 at 5:29 PM

You guys get off Shipley’s back.

He isn’t a muslim; He doesn’t want sharia law. He doesn’t even actually care if the Islam Victory Monument gets built there, or anywhere else for that matter.

He just naturally allies himself with anyone who wants to bring down America, anyone who will poke a finger in the eyes of conservatism.

” Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.” – Orwell. The Democratic Propaganda Machine has gone too far this time. They are pushing, hard, the meme that the mosque “issue” is an evil dirty trick by the “vast right wing conspiracy,” and is as factual as gravity. I’ve heard several people today espouse this “theory” as indisputable truth. I’ve never witnessed such indisputable evil on display in my lifetime. Frightening.

HalJordan on August 18, 2010 at 5:12 PM

HalJordan, where’s that verse in the Qur’an, if it is there??? And if it isn’t, it goes without saying that you make the truth look bad, and weak, by misquoting the Qur’an. Islam certainly has enough real problems of its own, and has shown itself for what it is to anyone who cares to see. And yes, the ultimate goal of Islam is world dominance.

To word search the Koran, you can try this:

http://quod.lib.umich.edu/k/koran/

It is eye opening to see how little talk of love there is (it is only spoken of in the context of loving Allah and “believers”… no love your neighbor as yourself). A search on the word “terror” shows it is the portion (according to the Koran) of us the unbelievers.

dtestard on August 18, 2010 at 5:48 PM

It looks to me as if his only regret is that he is not allowed to snatch questioners like so many flies and crush them in his fist.

Lily on August 18, 2010 at 5:52 PM

The political and substantive damage will continue until Obama explains his position in detail and (in a dignified and uplifting way) explains why his critics are wrong.

Obama probably wants to stay away from a big treatise about religion. He doesn’t much bother with church-goin’,
his theological grasp of Christianity is mostly limited to references to The Golden Rule, and he really, truly loves the sound of the Muslim call to prayer.

On another note, does anyone but me think it’s a little revealing and disturbing that the plan is to dedicate this victory mosque on the tenth anniversary of 9/11…Sept. 11, 2011? Not that Muslims are “into” the significance of dates…/sarc

marybel on August 18, 2010 at 6:02 PM

Ugh. There are battles in Virginia all the time over who should be able to build anything (WalMarts, Casinos, you name it) on sacred Civil War battlegrounds. People just don’t like the idea of building things on hallowed grounds, no matter what it is. They win these battles all the time. A local university was crucified when they brought up a plan to build a ball field on the ground where Turner Ashby died and that was in 1862!

One of the more vocal posters against it in another thread softened his stand when he found out the center isn’t AT ground zero or even directly adjacent to it.
Tom_Shipley on August 18, 2010 at 4:41 PM

I believe someone pointed out on another thread than an engine from one of the planes that the followers of Mohammad and the koran used to murder almost 3,000 people landed where the Grand Victory Mega Mosque is to be victoriously erected. In any case it is to be built well within the blast field of body parts. But you keep on trying to peddle your big points in your own mind. Tav on August 18, 2010 at 5:07 PM

Well said Tav, as usual. These moderate Muslims propose to build a Victory Mosque on the ashes of the 3000 innocents who were massacred by their co-religionists. Anyone who doesn’t have a problem with this is an idiot.

I work in Dearborn-istan Michigan, some of my co-workers are Muslim. I also have Muslim neighbors where I live (far form my work). For the most part they are nice people.

However, it has been my experience that as far as the religious aspect goes, there are no moderate Muslims. They are either practicing or not practicing their faith (much like myself with being a Catholic).
They are either afraid to stand up or do not care to get involved. To get involved is to take a stand which puts them in a difficult position. Kind of like answering that gotcha question “Do you still beat your wife?”. No matter how you answer it, you can not win.

They have nothing to lose by taking a wait and see additude and doing nothing.

Just my opinion.
