Dr. Laura quits radio to “regain my First Amendment rights”

Laura Schlessinger has been in radio since I was a teenager, doing a late-night advice show on KWIZ, has published a string of books, and turned into a force in the social-commentary industry. Now Dr. Laura plans to give up her radio show after a controversial incident in which she used the N-word repeatedly while arguing that a woman in an interracial relationship was too sensitive about insults from family. Schlessinger apologized completely for her actions, but now says she wants to leave radio “to regain my First Amendment rights”:
The announcement by the host of the “Dr. Laura” program was a stunning denouement after a week in which Schlessinger was widely criticized for describing an African American caller to her program as “hypersensitive” for taking offense at a neighbor’s racial taunting. To illustrate her claim of a racial double standard, she said that black comedians often use the N-word on TV without criticism, but the word is forbidden for white people. She used the racial epithet, unexpurgated, 11 times in five minutes, despite her caller’s protests.
Schlessinger later apologized for the remarks, saying she said “the wrong thing” on the air. On Tuesday she went further: During an interview on “Larry King Live” on CNN, Schlessinger said, “My contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year, and I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore.”
She added: “The reason is, I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special-interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that.”
Schlessinger’s advice program has been a fixture on talk radio for years and is heard on almost 200 stations around the country. (The weekday program was dropped by WMAL-AM in Washington several years ago.) In 2000, Schlessinger drew protests from a coalition of gay organizations after deeming gays “deviants” and “biological errors.” She later apologized for those remarks.
I like Dr. Laura and agree with her often, but this is just silly. Few people in America have been more blessed by the First Amendment than Laura Schlessinger. She has had a career of over thirty years by speaking her mind in public fora around the nation. When not broadcasting, Schlessinger tours the lecture circuit, writes books, and makes a very good living at exercising her rights to free speech.
If Schlessinger feels that getting paid to talk puts too much restriction on her broadcast content, that may well be a legitimate point, but as noted above, broadcasting is only one of several means available to her in commercializing her speech. Besides, the First Amendment doesn’t confer the right to profit from speech, only the right to speak. It isn’t an entitlement to publication. It also means that people can speak out and disagree with what Schlessinger says, even if she sees that speech as an “attack” on her, her sponsors, and her affiliates. It’s a little late in the game to suddenly get sensitive about criticism, and just a little hypocritical to cast it as an “attack” while demanding the supposed return of her First Amendment rights.
Schlessinger offered a full apology for her remarks, calling them “wrong.” She didn’t evade responsibility for them, nor did she offer the “I’m sorry if anyone was offended” non-apology apology. Schlessinger should have stopped there, instead of making herself into a First Amendment martyr when she has never had an issue of being “silenced” or having those rights taken from her. Even those of us who work daily in the First Amendment space seem to need reminders that the Constitution does not give people the right to be free from criticism after their own exercise of free speech.

He used the same shtick he has tried in the past. Basically, telling Bishop that he would pay half of his plane fare for Bishop to come to LA to receive a lesson.
Good riddance. That man is insane.

You weren’t acting like an adult from the beginning, you were arguing whether or not what I said was verbatim in your dictionary. So, you get treated like the ankle-biter that you are – which is why I switched to something more entertaining, like ridiculing you.

So he should have sprung for the whole ticket?

Of course, if you want to fight someone, at least be man enough to pay for all of the ticket.

MadCon argues in a very dishonest manner. That is his modus operandi. I busted him the other day and he got all pissy. It was quite telling.

You should be less upset with Dr. Laura’s reaction and more upset with the fact that this was even an issue. It was much like a week ago or so when I posted the name of a Beatles song that had the N word in it and TRC got “upset”. It is little different than someone recounting a Nazi saying “Kill the Jews” . The response to that particular show was quite immature.

You might want to watch this movie trailer that was recently released. It’s about blacks being told its time to leave the Democrat plantation. I think it was actually posted here on HA not long ago.
Oh, and yes, it’s other blacks using the word “plantation.” In fact, the one black pastor is a reformed liberal who calls himself a runaway slave. (ran away from the plantation)

Life imitates art. The power of a single word “Ni!” We laughed because it was so ridiculous. That would never happen.

Try re-reading my comments and the point will be crystal clear.

What is your compulsion with being willfully obtuse?

AMEN. And God bless Palin for supporting Dr. Laura – Rush & Hannity should too. Dr. Laura may have said a bad word but she definitely has a good heart. I like the previous comment that said something like, “am I a racist if I read the word aloud from the book Huck Finn?”
Dr. Laura’s mistake was apologizing, because people jumped on it and started attacking her. And yet, she felt the right thing to do was apologize – and I’d agree, it was. Most liberal politicians refuse to apologize or step down after being caught doing something wrong – they just deny, deny, deny. Dr. Laura stuck to her principals and got attacked for it. She’s been attacked before but perhaps not for saying something SHE agreed was wrong. That’s the difference. I hope she hangs tough and realizes that she still has the respect and admiration of most, if not all, of her fans. And the ones spewing hate already hated her.

Come on, people! Dr. Laura was trying to make a point and it wasn’t about making it acceptable to call blacks the N-word. Since when are we not allowed to point out a blatant double standard in the black community without getting chastised by the left and right?
How is it that some can claim “most” white people aren’t offended by the terms “Honky” or “Cracker”? Has Gallup done a poll on this subject lately that I haven’t seen? Perhaps a growing swell of Caucasians are beginning to realize that non-whites are deeply offending some of us by calling us Crackers and Honkies. And maybe, just maybe, it will no longer be acceptable to use these offensive terms. I personally am deeply offended when someone calls me the C-word or the H-word, and the next time it happens, I might consider filing a charge of harassment. Calling Caucasians the C-word or the H-word should be considered as hateful as calling blacks the N-word.
Since many non-whites call frequently call Caucasians “Whitey”, would it be acceptable to call blacks “blackies”?
By reading most of the comments on this subject, I come away with the feeling that many are too afraid to stand up and speak against the slander of Caucasians, but many are quick to speak out against the use of the N-word. Some of us are Caucasians or whites, but we are not to be called the C-word
When is somebody on CNN, MSNBC or any other liberal network going to come out and declare enough is enough? When are the black rappers and comedians going to come out and declare enough is enough? When is Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Tim Wise or even Obama himself going to come out and declare enough is enough? When are many on Hot Air going to come out and declare enough is enough? I want them all to come out and declare enough is enough…the terms “nigger”, “whitey”, “honky” and “cracker” are hateful descriptions and should not be acceptable to anyone under any conditions at anytime. Period!

The N word – see I can’t use the actual word since I am not African American – is classified as an evil word because of its history. Now if I called an Italian a Wop, since I am not Italian, it would not be accepted because I am outside of that cultural group; but if an African American calls another the N-word, here we go again, it is OK too since it is inside of that cultural group. If I called an African American the N-word that would be racist and evil, not just inappropriate because I am not African American. Well Wop was used in a racist manner in the past by non-Italians, but it doesn’t carry the evil label. I submit if the N-word is evil then it is evil and unacceptable for anyone to use it, period. So just maybe the rappers and others need to clean up their act of using that evil word.

Dr. Laura’s point about regaining her first amendment rights is the same as the one made by Tammy Bruce. I think that her switch to internet radio has probably been in the works for a while anyway, but hers is not an unreasonable rhetorical point.
