AP poll shows Obama at 41% on economy

posted at 11:36 am on August 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The new Associated Press poll of the general population shows economic pessimism rising — and confidence in Barack Obama’s economic leadership declining.  Despite a helpful sample split, Obama only gets 41% on the economy, a serious drop in confidence from the beginning of “Recovery Summer,” and a bad sign for Democrats looking a brutal midterm cycle:

President Barack Obama earned his lowest marks ever on his handling of the economy in a new Associated Press-GfKpoll, which also found that an overwhelming majority of Americans now describe the nation’s financial outlook as poor.

A frustrated electorate could take it out on the party in power — Obama’s Democrats — in the November elections.

Eleven weeks before the Nov. 2 balloting, just 41 percent of those surveyed approve of the president’s performance on the economy, down from 44 percent in April, while 56 percent disapprove. And 61 percent say the economy has gotten worse or stayed the same onObama’s watch.

As usual, the AP has some interesting results as a consequence of their sample.  When looking at the overall partisan split, the seemingly innocuous D+4 topline (43/39/5?) masks a larger split by distributing independents.  Without independent leaners, the actual sample split is 32/25 for Democrats, with 31% independents.  That +7 overstates Democratic support, which is probably why the AP gets a 49% overall approval rating for Obama (with 50% disapproving) while pollsters like Gallup find approval ratings in the low 40s instead.

Still, even with that kind of a head start, Democrats don’t do terribly well in the poll.  In the generic Congressional ballot, they lose by 4 points to the GOP, 49/45 among registered voters.  The same gap favors Republicans winning overall control of Congress, 47/43, an eleven-point swing from June’s 39/46.

The two top issues are the economy, ranked extremely or very important by 91% of respondents, and unemployment (83%).  That’s not good news for Democrats either, based on the rating Obama gets on these issues.  He only does slightly better on joblessness (43/51) than on the economy (41/56).  Obama is also underwater on the budget deficit (37/56), health care (45/53), taxes (42/50), and immigration (39/51).

When it comes to giving Obama a grade, he definitely doesn’t get a good, solid B-plus even from a Democrat-heavy sample.  Only 34% give him above-average marks, while 36% give him below-average or poor ratings, and 28% consider him “average.”  A grading scale would probably put that in the D-plus range.

I put Dear Liar in the Peppermint Patty range: D minus — only because of social promotion — i.e., I wouldn’t want The Whine back in my class the next year.

…but …but …but I thought that “D” was no longer going to be used for grading – something about being demoralizing or something…

Obama doesn’t care because killing the economy was one of his goals. Can’t fundamentally transform America without tearing it down first.

You mention the 41% on the economy.

Watch MSNBC use the 49% approval to claim President Obama’s making a big rebound.

All you gun owners will also be glad to know that PBHO recently blocked South Korea from selling 100,000 surplus M1 Garands on the American market out of fears that the guns might be used by drug gangs.

Incoherent? Eh, more like clueless, naive, stupid and deranged.

Bring on 30% approval.

hmmm, maybe the current floor for obie is 42%. I think Jesse Jackson’s insane comments from yesterday actually reflects the views of these people. It’s all Boooosssshhhhhhhh!!!!

And that’s it, that’s the end of the thought process.

I guess that very lucky family this bho is visiting today to tell us how much his economy has helped them will make us all feel better about all his hard work!

Ed, so are you saying… the only reason the “O” has a D is the teachers don’t want him in the class again and give “O” a D to move him on? Who would do such a thing!?!/

Nah, he’ll drop below 40% eventually, but it’ll take a while. He’s lost Republicans and most independents. It’ll take conservative and moderate Democrats turning on him to sink him into the 30′s. It may not happen til he raises their taxes though.

Those 41% who actually approve are permanently stoned, the old “80s welfare queens” or like O whose wife can afford $600 ugly sneakers.

Sorry to make the obvious comment but, what is wrong with the brain-dead 41%? Chronic high unemployment, flat GDP – yeah, what’s to complain about there? Thumbs up! Duhhh…. What is wrong with these people?

Django on August 18, 2010 at 11:47 AM

Its a D minus in the real world, but in BO’s propped up affirmative action world he is a B+.

If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you win elections if there are more Pauls than Peters.

41% approval on the economy. Probably Government workers + SEIU + UAW + teachers’ unions + GM + Chrysler + bailed-out banks = 41%. The rest of us who pay for this…disapprove now, and we’ll remember in November.

What outrageous stupidity. I’m sure all those drug gangs out there relish the thought of lugging around big, heavy semi-auto 30-06′s that will hide oh-so-easily in their jackets or down their pants (as long as they have five foot long legs and no desire to bend at the knees).
All this does is keep good Americans from owning a cherished piece of WWII history…or was that the idea?

HUH??? What liberal school did you attend, Ed? I get that you’re not using the 41% to arrive at the D+, but I don’t get how you are grading him with the numbers you used.

Regardless, the 41% grade is more accurate, since it reflects the total “approve” votes he gets on the economy:

Typical grading scale:

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D
59% and below = F

Big. Fat. F.

Get with the times, man, pint sized easily hidden firearms are so last century.

Bishop on August 18, 2010 at 12:09 PM

People act like they’re surprised. Like Mark Levin says: he’s a back-bencher nobody that’s never had a real job in his life. The guy’s never run a cash register at 7/11, and yet he thinks his provenly stupid ideas (his own toxic blend of Keynesian economics and Socialism) will actually do anything other than harm millions in the US. I have a hard time believing that, and I think he knows precisely what he’s doing, and this is all meant to create an America more like the Soviet Union, where there was the dirt, dog food-eating poor and the ultra-rich. He wants to fall on the right side of that dividing line, and insure his friends and family (at least some of them; I guess his ‘brother’ in Kenya and the rest of them can go to Hell, as far as he cares) do, with him.

Virus-X on August 18, 2010 at 12:10 PM

I was forced to listen Barry bumble and bungle an answer to a question about how to get Ohio manufacturing back.

Same old crap about “green jobs”. “Green jobs” that aren’t even slightly viable, “green jobs” that are supporting a handful of people, “green jobs” that are a crapshoot at best.

Obama has NOTHING to offer this country. He has exactly two items in his minature skill set – he is good at reading speeches and he is good at shameless self-promotion.

Beyond that – Obama is absolutely and completely useless.

NoDonkey on August 18, 2010 at 12:15 PM

Who are the 41% who say he’s doing well?? Massive transfer from the private to the public sector, taxes, regulation, the worst things for our economy at this time.

Paul-Cincy on August 18, 2010 at 12:17 PM

CBS ran a poll a few days ago to grade Obama on the economy, terrorism, bipartisanship, etc. Last time I checked, he had earned a solid “F” on the economy, and was barely cracking a “D” on the rest.

joejm65 on August 18, 2010 at 12:24 PM

That means 41% prefer socialist policies over free market principles.

That’s not a good thing in my opinion.

GarandFan on August 18, 2010 at 1:07 PM

Did some research on “green jobs”, since they are trying to force some on my little valley. Solar installers make $11 to $19/hour, the high end close to high-end cities. We are a rural ag district, so figure $12 for us. These are temp, last 2-3 months. Also require some training.

The permanent jobs (6-8) boil down to being a security guard who can flip switches, pay $14 – $22/hour, figure $15 here.

Even here, where costs are not high, these are not living wages.

There really is about 25-30% of the population that thinks socialism is a good way to run an economy. Of those, probably about half are hardcore, and the other half are just ignorant products of our government education. Sad.
