Quotes of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on August 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

Over the weekend, Politico’s Ben Smith and Maggie Haberman pointed out the Republican defenders of the “ground zero mosque” were vastly outnumbered by Republicans who catered to “hostility toward Islam among many Republican voters” and saw openings to attack Democrats over national security. There’s no question that those Republicans are winning the argument. But they’re winning the argument because they’re not the only people who think big shows of American tolerance will fail to stop terrorists from recruiting…

The 2009 Arab Opinion Poll, conducted by the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, showed Obama single-handedly spiking Muslim optimism about American foreign policy up to 51 percent. In the 2010 poll, it fell back to a Bush-level 16 percent. The Obama magic fell flat here, too: In February 2010, a poll for the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies found 53 percent of Americans viewing Islam unfavorably.

The bad feelings weren’t all Obama’s fault. They were the result of reality crashing in, of foreign policy remaining a mess. But they’re like the bitterness that Americans feel about the 2009 economic stimulus, which was oversold and has become politically toxic because its success is hard to measure. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the promise of the Cordoba Initiative, the group involved in the planned mosque for Lower Manhattan, is easy for conservatives and Republicans to deride. When Americans are asked to look past their initial reactions and back the building of the mosque because it will send a good message, they’re being asked to believe in a new kind of hope and change.

***
Faced with difficult choices, the alleged party of small government always retreats to the lazy politics of Kulturkampf. Hey, that guy’s a “card-carrying member” of the ACLU! Ask me about my flag-burning amendment!

John Cornyn, R-Texas, head of GOP efforts to take back the Senate this fall, plans to make the Park51 “mosque” a major campaign issue. It’s all too typical: Feed the rubes conservative identity politics, and, with luck, they’ll be too distracted to notice you’ve grafted a Republican “K Street Project” atop the same old edifice of Big Government.

The establishment Right wants to play the Tea Party movement for suckers. It remains to be seen whether they’ll play along.

***
Somebody’s got to say that, “We’re not going to act like the people who stole freedom from Americans, the people who attacked America and killed 3,000 people.”

Democrats are in trouble because of the lousy economy, but that doesn’t mean that Republicans aren’t going to capitalize on an issue in which they have a political winner. My point is that it’s only political posturing.

Proud Rino on August 18, 2010 at 12:40 AM

Your point is wrong! There are probably more Democrats coming out against this right now than vociferous Republicans. If not more then at least equal after Barry made it a major issue for National politicians.

bluemarlin on August 18, 2010 at 12:43 AM

Not 100% sure but Reid came out against it after Sharon Angle did ..So Dingy Harry felt like he needed to make a move..

Dire Straits on August 18, 2010 at 12:41 AM

I’m sure he did. That smells a lot more like desperation in trying to save his political career and less about his actual political beliefs or the beliefs of his party.

PR your use of the”illegal”argument is dishonest. Learn that from the prez?

Most are not asking the federal government to step so this is not an issue of the Constitution.

This is a winning issue for the pubs and thank you Pres. Obama for goofing up whatever your point was. Laughable.

You can have that point. In war, love and politics all is fair. Your side has made the latter so. I wish the right would be way more aggressive than they are. Your side has reached hypocritical and elitist impertinence. There is nothing they wouldn’t exploit or sell their objectivity or soul for, nothing. I speak of the left. The little the right do, have at it.

So Harry Reid pulls an identical approach to Angle’s, something you identify as a cynical election-year ploy, but it’s only the Republicans who are trying to use the controversy to their advantage? Ok then.

Now you’re using the term “equally bigoted”. Equally bigoted refers to who exactly, because if liberal Obama-voting New Yorkers are joining the ranks of the anti-mosque crowd then there must be a few bigots running around on the left.

How does it feel to belong to a party which accepts bigots such as Senator Jack Reed (demorat)?

Stole this from a friend

Perhaps we need a peaceful demonstration at the building site of the GZM. Christians praying 24/7 over the site and claiming it for the Lord. I wonder what would happen if we all did that and earnestly prayed for God’s will that those involved in the mosque project turn their lives over to the real God.

I like this idea because it really allows for an open exchange/competition of beliefs.

Daily Show host Jon Stewart has again come to the defense of the Ground Zero mosque-builders, complete with a graphic suggesting the opponents are conducting a “Mosque-erade.” Stewart brought in “senior religion correspondent” John Oliver, and predictably, they launched back into Catholic pedophile humor, as if it were fresh and original and so, well, 2002:

STEWART: Why should religious groups have to bend to people’s worst suspicions about them?

JOHN OLIVER: Because, Jon, there’s a difference between what you can do and what you should do. For instance, you can build a Catholic church next to a playground. Should you? Should you do that, Jon? Should you do that? [Whoops, laughter and applause.]

STEWART (under the noise): I don’t see a problem with it.

OLIVER: Well, I’m just posing the question. Or am I alone in thinking it’s a little too soon for that?

Bill O reminds me of some of the authoritarian “conservatives” that come to this site (JetBoy and Naruto come to mind).

They bend the law whenever they want something … then they use the law when they want something else.

This is what BOR does. It’s dangerous because eventually you’ll find yourself making an argument solely from an emotional standpoint and you’ll be able to rationalize anything…

how many trolls here do you think work for or pass stuff onto MediaMutters?

MeatHeadinCA on August 18, 2010 at 1:30 AM

I have family members and extended-family members who are hardcore typical San Fransisco brand lefties, I stick out like a sore thumb.
When I see trolls rambling and raving and ranting with such single minded devotion, like the one we just had on this thread, I feel like I am with my family. So I’ll make a guess here :

There are two kinds of trolls :
1. Those who go looking into various sites/media outlets to see what those sites are editorilizing
Then they get the instructions and talking points ready and send them to the trolls’ inboxes..
2. The trolls we actually get to see are those who just parrot their points for the day. They don’t even know themselves what the implications of their actions would be.
I’m pretty sure their masters track their activity too but just from the outside.
Thats why I love to see trolls being smacked around, because when they are confronted with facts, they react exactly the way lefties in my family react– like jerks . But the troll-masters worry me the most.
I still can’t put my finger on what the core of the leftwing machine is planning next to malign our side , because the feeling I get is that they feel they have lost their mojo after Hussain yapped to muslims about a jihady memorial @ G-0. They know now, they will never be able to recover, atleast not till some really really big story knocks it off the media and blogs. Thats what they are waiting for. So am I

Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, are all religions.

Islam is NOT, by definition, a Religion.

Why?

The aforementioned religions deal strictly with a system of beliefs, worship, and codes of condcut, and methods to communicate with the higher power (save for Buddhism), and gain salvation, while Buddhism works toward enlightenment, transendence of the confines of ego, etc.

They do NOT also include Economic and Legal doctrines.

Lslam DOES indluce legal and economic/financial doctrines and practices.

In Islam, adherents don’t just lay out a prayer rug, face Mecca, bow several times, and “pray.” They also follow Sharia Law, which has been used to slaughter homosexuals, beat women who have been victims of rape, stone women to death who have been victims of rape, oppress women, rule over Dihmmies – submissives, and so forth.

Islam believes that all non-believers must convert, or, in lieu of failure to comply with converstion, non believers must submit – as Dihmmies, and pay the jizya – religious tax, to live under the rule of Islam, limiting their freedoms of worship, clothing, personal hygeine, movement, and more.

Islam wants to bring this form of religion, legal system, and even financial system, to the entire world. We are all infidels, targets for their exploitation, dominance, and murder, all justified in the name of Allah.

There is more, but that is enough to illustrate that this is not strictly a “Religious” issue. It is also a legal, financial, and cultueral issue.

The Muslims pushing this Mosque are not showing honesty in their claim that they want to bring harmony and such. If they did, why are they projecting their own bias, bigotray, xenophobia, and cultural apoplexy by not scrubbing their idea, not trying so hard to offend the sensibilities of millions of people, and move their mosque elsewhere?

They already have more than enough mosques in New York City alone to accomodate all Muslims and visitors. Why do they need another one?

All appreances show that obstinate, power hungry, “We must dominate. We will not submit. You will comply!” mindset that is Islam, that has butchered millions of Hindus, Jains, Zoriastrians, Buddhist, Christians, Jews, Ba’hais, etc., throughout the past 1400 years, coerced millions of conversions at the blade of the sword, and dominated millions who submitted and lived at the “mercy” of Islam.

When we are all expendible to Muslims and Islam because were at “Infidels,” people be surprised that some of us are not buying into that whole “Cordoba” project thing?

William2006 on August 18, 2010 at 4:31 AM

Right, the Left opposes the mosque and the Right supports it. That’s what’s happening here.

Proud Rino on August 18, 2010 at 12:46 AM

The numbers who actually support the Mosque are right around the same numbers of people who have doubts about Obama’s birth origin.

Sooo … basically, only a lunatic “fringe” of the left support the Mosque.

HondaV65 on August 18, 2010 at 6:29 AM

I think the mosque is one of those issues where liberals are for it only because conservative are against it. Even dimwits like Proud Rino understand why building the mosque is wrong. Hell, my dog understands. But they simply cannot go against their messiah. Obama could say 2+2=5 tomorrow and Proud Rino would be here saying anyone who thinks 2+2=4 is racist. Some people are just like that.

angryed on August 18, 2010 at 6:37 AM

since 70% of Americans are against that mosque makes Joe and O’Donnell FRINGE EXTREMISTS!

Remember the original memorial that was planned before Michelle Malkin, and others, led the charge and it was changed?
It was a crescent moon.

Muslims do like to sign their work.

Marcus on August 18, 2010 at 7:02 AM

Act like the people who killed 3,000 Americans? That is insane. Has this imam even denounced Hamas? Have these people shown any sensitivity to the American people? To hell with them. This is an insult to the dead, plain and simple.

Today, the spin on Morning Joe is to argue that Republicans are overplaying the issue so much that it’s going to backfire on them.

I find that funny. Obama tried to light a little campfire last Friday, which he misplayed into an all-consuming forest fire. And Republicans have, in varying degrees, added some logs to it. Obama started the fire, and he’s still stuck in the middle of it.

One thing that bothers me is that Scarborough repeatedly (you’d think he were being paid for each mention) insists that Gingrich compared all muslims to German Nazis of the the 1930s and 1940s. To my knowledge, the only Gingrich clip I’ve seen showed Gingrich comparing the Obamamosque to Nazis holding a rally at the National Holocaust Museum. A reasonable interpretation of what he said suggests that Newt was talking about modern-day white supremacists (same ideals, but without the blood of 6 million Jews on their hands). The point, I suppose, is that Scarborough is shrieking about a Nazi card that Newt didn’t play.

BuckeyeSam on August 18, 2010 at 7:08 AM

I thought everyone pretty much agreed both parties suck?

The question is this November who sucks less…and which party actually might love America? That would be the GOP.

And while we’re discussing things that suck……Joe Scarborough and anything on MSDNC…….SuperMegaSuck power Activate!!!!

PappyD61 on August 18, 2010 at 7:12 AM

I spoke to a guy at work who knows a union worker in NY who says the Mosque will never be completed anyway. It seems non-stop delays by union construction guys will put this thing as never being completed, as these are New Yorkers who lost people too.

I say build it and pour ten gallons of fresh pig blood at the entrance every morning making it impossible for any Muslim to cross the threshhold. Hang bacon from the door handles as well. It’s supposed to be a multicultural center catering to all. I’m in the swine sacrifice religion and I want my right to worship my swine god, and I want my rights now. All Muslims not partaking of Pork are discriminating my religion, and I want my first amendment rights. They need to placate my religious demands or they are just bigots who can’t respect my Religion of Pork..Muslims are Infidels in my Swine Religion, and I have religious rights too….

adamsmith on August 18, 2010 at 7:15 AM

I guess you only get freedom of religion as long as everybody else likes it and nobody freaks out.

Proud Rino on August 17, 2010 at 11:33 PM

Another dishonest argument. Wow you are good with those. This is not a freedom of religion argument. Seriously GFY-you are a troll extraordinaire.

BuckeyeSam on August 18, 2010 at 7:08 AM

Did you see Chuck Todd’s interview? UN-believable.
“This issue is pretty much over.” “I doubt the President will receive one question on it today. You know – he has a small town hall today – in someone’s backyard. They probably won’t ask about the mosque.”

When pointed out that all the New York papers and Washington papers had front page stories on the mosque controversy: Chuck Todd says “This is a beltway issue! Those people in New York think that whatever happens there* is so important to people beyond their borders! It’s not!”

*the murder of 3,000 Americans

Marcus on August 18, 2010 at 7:39 AM

I don’t think there is necessarily a distance at which it would no longer be bad taste. It’s bad taste because they built it to have a dialogue, like they think building a mosque a couple blocks away from Ground Zero is going to help the healing process or something. That’s stupid.
