New lefty theory: Obama might be a one-term president because we’re too darned rotten to appreciate him

posted at 9:23 pm on August 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

Roger Simon’s piece is getting most of the links but he’s not the only one who’s pushing this meme. Jon Meacham, soon to be ex-editor of Newsweek, is exiting with an ode to the fact that great presidents, alas, often aren’t recognized for their genius until they’re out of office.

Much like Jesus, my friends, The One’s simply too good for this political world.

A recent CNN poll found that 68 percent of Americans do not want a mosque built close to ground zero. Which should mean: end of story. That’s all she wrote. Let’s move on to the next crisis.

It appears, however, that at least on this occasion, Obama does not care what the polls say…

And what’s the point of doing the right thing if your party is going to lose seats because of it?

Maybe Obama is disconnected. After all, as a former professor of constitutional law, he actually knows what the Constitution says.

His opponents have no such fetters. They know what they want the Constitution to say: yes to guns, no to gay marriage and never to mosques close to hallowed ground, though churches and synagogues are OK.

What’s so wrong with that? I’ll bet they poll great.

I like the idea that the Second Amendment merely reflects what the wingnuts “want” it to say, almost as much as I like his lie that Obama’s opponents want the Constitution to ban construction of the Ground Zero mosque. (61 percent say the owners have the right to build, including 57 percent of Republicans.) On the larger point, though, this is, of course, the logical conclusion of the left’s fixation on “messaging” and “optics” as an all-purpose excuse for the momentous public opposition they’re now faced with. It’s the one and only concession they’ll make vis-a-vis their total intellectual superiority: Their policies may be ingenious and their motives may be virtuous beyond reproach, but sometimes they simply don’t understand the scummy primitives of the American electorate as well as they should. Or, per Simon, maybe they do understand them but feel compelled by their inner goodness to Do The Right Thing anyway and accept the consequences. Tempted to come down off the cross about the mosque, The One refused and achieved salvation — until, er, the next morning, when he clarified that he’s taking no position on whether the mosque should be built. Truly, we don’t deserve him.

As a gloss, read James Poulos’s post on how this sort of sanctimony and epistemic closure contributes to (not causes) a reactionary backlash on the right. Speaking of which, Jesse Jackson took time to inform the Sun-Times’s readers this morning that while criticism of the president is fine, we need to dial down the rhetoric a bit and show some respect for the office. What a valuable lesson to learn … in 2010.

A little O/T. Just how bad is the economy, 3 weeks ago a young man went into a Blockbuster and paid the $5:00 with 10 1964 thru 1967 Kennedy 1/2 dollars. Luckily the clerk got suspicious and called the police, turns out the coins were stolen. A couple days ago my wife was paid for an $.88 can of pop with a 1940 and 1943 walking liberty 1/2 dollars. Keep an eye on your change folks.

And how about that race baiting, Roger?

You can go back to the mid-1800s and find a lot of legislators saying that Abraham Lincoln should stop lecturing people about ending slavery and listen to them about keeping it.

And there were plenty of lawmakers who said President Dwight D. Eisenhower was “disconnected from the mainstream of America” when he ordered the 101st Airborne Division to go down to Little Rock, Ark., to make sure some black kids could go to school with white kids.

Got that? Barack is your moral superior. He is doing the right thing by opposing all these teabagging racists, even if it means he has to go “off-message” once in awhile and anger his own party.

I am so tired of hearing the lie about our Dear Leader being so “smart” and “special”. I have seen many from the academia world in my field who thought they were far superior and much wiser than the grunts who actually were doing the job. Many of them, like our Dear Leader, were clueless. Let’s face it, he might do well at an extremely liberal university, but in the real world, he is worthless.

Your observation reminds me of a very funny (and telling) bit from The Kite Runner, a wonderful novel about Afghanis displaced by war since the ’70′s. The narrator describes his father when both are finally settled in America after fleeing their native land.

He (Baba- the narrator’s father)loathed Jimmy Carter, whom he called ‘the big-toothed cretin.’ In 1980 when we (Amir and Baba) were still in Kabul, the US announced it would be boycotting the Olympic Games in Moscow. “Wah wah!” Baba exclaimed with disgust. “Brezhnev is massacring Afghans and all that peanut eater can say is I won’t come swim in your pool.” Baba believed Carter had unwittingly done more for communism than Leonid Breshnev. “He’s not fit to run this country. It’s like putting a boy who can’t ride a bike behind the wheel of a brand new Cadillac.” What America and the world needed was a hard man. A man to be reckoned with, someone who took action instead of wringing his hands. That someone came in the form of Ronal Reagan…”

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

I had a teacher in college that I referred to as a professor. He was very quick to clarify that he did not have a PhD yet and could not be a professor. He apologized if he had given me the wrong impression.

year_of_the_dingo on August 17, 2010 at 10:01 PM

Um, don’t try that one on any Profs you might know. He was a “lecturer” which isn’t anywhere near Professor any more than a nurse is a doctor or a draftsman is an architect.

Lecturer is below Adjunct Professor, which is below Assistant Professor which is below below Associate Professor, which is below Full Professor. Lecturer is the LOWEST on the staff totem pole, not on tenure track to Professorship and very often they don’t even have to have an advanced degree to teach a class if they have some sort of specialized experience which the School thinks might be valuable to their students’ education.

In Barack’s case, his was a patronage appointment doled out to politically connected lawyers for the purposes of currying favor with politicians who allocate funding to the University. He didn’t even go to faculty meetings. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Lots of those lecturing contracts at professional schools receiving public funding around the country go to the friends of people in high places with their hands on the public purse strings.

By the standards his sycophantic hagiographers are using to describe him as a “constitutional scholar”, then, there are thousands of third-rate ambulance chasers around the country as I write this who padded their resumes exactly as Barack did with the same short-term lecturing gigs – who are ‘Constitutional Scholars’ & ‘Former Professors’. And I can most heartily assure you, they simply are not any such thing. They’ve never done original research or published a substantial contribution to their discipline, which is what a Professor – or an assistant or an associate seeking to become a Professor – is required to do.

leilani on August 17, 2010 at 11:26 PM

Huh? Jesus pretty much ignored the political world and registered His CONTEMPT for the established religious order of His day. The same order that that used their influence with the political authorities (the Romans) to have Jesus executed IN SPITE of the enormous popularity that Jesus enjoyed with the common people — the people that He had won over with His miracles of healing. The situation with Obama HARDLY seems the same.

A better analogy would be after the last supper, when all of the disciples abandoned Jesus. Isn’t that what the Demonrats are doing now? They’re abandoning their messiah in droves.

Maybe Obama is disconnected. After all, as a former professor of constitutional law, he actually knows what the Constitution says.

I know I’ve pointed this out before but by the standard used to qualify Barry as a professor another president would also be a professor. Herbert Hoover and he would theoretically be an engineering professor. (One difference though, Herbert actually wrote a text book on the subject of mining engineering.)

Dave_d on August 17, 2010 at 11:51 PM

He really is a messiah to those on the left. They worship a failure and treat him like a martyr.

What a valuable lesson to learn … in 2010.

And what an appropriate accompanying photograph … of Helsinki.

Seriously, I don’t think we can blame the U.S. MSM for a banner in Finland.

Let’s face it, he might do well at an extremely liberal university, but in the real world, he is worthless.

kam582 on August 17, 2010 at 9:57 PM

Actually I’m not sure he did that well as far as his peers were concerned. It was noted at the University of Chicago that he never spent time with the other faculty and seemed to avoid the usual functions. It was also noted that he never published anything in the field. I don’t gather that his peers were too impressed.

Missy on August 18, 2010 at 12:25 AM

Obama has never been successful at anything in his life. Why would we expect him to be a successful president?

That’s because he wasn’t a professor. He was a ‘lecturer’, which is what many practicing lawyers that I know (including me) do occasionally; the more dedicated become adjunct professors. Lecturers are neither professors nor peers of professors.
Lellani lays it out pretty clearly, above.

LASue on August 18, 2010 at 1:36 AM

Professor? Professor? Did someone find documentation that he was even a STUDENT while I wasn’t looking?

Besides, he’s demonstrated about as much understanding of the Constitution as a hamster.

Merovign on August 18, 2010 at 1:53 AM

He never was a professor.

JammieWearingFool on August 17, 2010 at 9:30 PM

It appears that he was a part time adjunct lecturer. That means he is at the very bottom of the ladder to full professorship. He was not on a tenure track. Adjunct lecturers can claim to be a professor since any faculty at a college can claim that distinction, even part timers. He may not be outright lying, but he is not being fully truthful.

His claim to be highly intelligent falls into the same catagory of a partial truth to boost his stature. IQ is fluid and subject to the accuactcy of the instrument and the person who scores it. Obama claims a score of 118, just “one” point into the high intelligent range. Base on that one score he is claiming to be highly intelligent. That half truth may fly with claiming to be a professor, but not with claiming to be highly intelligent. My professional opinion is that he is at best normal intelligence.

They pulled out that same phony meme with Carter. Jimma was just “too intelligent” for us fools.

John the Libertarian on August 17, 2010 at 9:32 PM

I watched a video today where they compared Obama to Reagan and Clinton in that the later were misunderstood during their presidenties but later were requarded as great presidents. The gist was that the same would be for Obama. There is one big difference. The later had agendas and understood what was needed to get them done and they understood when to rein it in and why. Niether of them needed a teleprompter to give a speech and they did understand what they were saying. Obama is not even close to demonstrating a consistent or even most of the time, idea about what he is doing, or needs to do, as president. He can not give a speech, even a short one without a teleprompter. When he tries you could write the whole speech on a 3X5 card and all it would be is soundbites and phrases with no substance and a lot of stumbling around. Imagin Reagan, Clinton or even Bush doing that. That would be so out of character and below their normal actions that they would be taken to the nearst ER for test.

Short story is that Obama is average in intelligence and does not have the skills needed for the office he holds. On his own the Chicago community organizer comes out with street level skills, views and goals.

Franklyn on August 18, 2010 at 2:38 AM

Mr. Obama doesn’t measure up to the presidency. What a monumental error.

Mason on August 17, 2010 at 11:27 PM

He doesn’t even measure up to an Assistant Manager’s position at a Taco Bell in the San Fernando Valley.

trigon on August 18, 2010 at 3:49 AM

We need a president too good to be appreciated by the mass, one who does the right thing even thought the unfettered whine and complain.

Yes, doing the right thing, like slashing the size of our government by 50%, eliminating whole depts like Energy and Education, even homeland security….and slashing spending by 50%, eliminating most entitlements, making social security means tested, and cutting taxes by 50%. History would enshrine such courage.

Where can we find such a person?

davecatbone on August 18, 2010 at 4:16 AM

He WILL become great!

He will become great for showing all of us the WRONG WAY!

Lonetown on August 18, 2010 at 4:40 AM

Nothing remains for the Left but the contempt that nags their souls morning, noon and night. And it’s a bitter brew, now that they’ve discovered that Americans DO recognize their stance on ideals, principles and issues….and we roundly reject them.

The Left misunderstood general frustration with Bush to mean alignment with their principles. They have discovered how wrong they were.

Since they have such a difficult time abiding the rubes who don’t understand them, may I suggest they either shut up or leave the country?

Grace_is_sufficient on August 18, 2010 at 6:28 AM

As long as Obama is a one-term president, I don’t much care how we (the public) are perceived.

zoyclem on August 18, 2010 at 7:47 AM

They remove their brains before they get their certified lefty cards. It’s not possible for anyone to be a lefty and still be thinking in an upright position.

tarpon on August 18, 2010 at 7:55 AM

Maybe Obama is disconnected. After all, as a former professor of constitutional law, he actually knows what the Constitution says.

Or How an Incompetent fraud ran Newsweek into the Ground, Part 574.

So tell me Jon Meacham. Are you this incompetent, or are you just a fraud? Nothing more than a Jayson Blair wannabe.

What kind of moron still subscribes to this? What kind of moron purposefully wants to be ill informed?

MNHawk on August 18, 2010 at 7:56 AM

Speaking of which, Jesse Jackson took time to inform the Sun-Times’s readers this morning that while criticism of the president is fine, we need to dial down the rhetoric a bit and show some respect for the office. What a valuable lesson to learn … in 2010.

This coming from Mr. “I wanna cut his nuts off” Jackson? One cannot make this stuff up. Liberals are a riot!
