Good news: Obama spokesman says it’s okay to oppose the Ground Zero mosque

posted at 7:11 pm on August 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

Well, it’s nice to know that at least one Democrat thinks so. According to Peter Beinart, not only does opposing the mosque spell the end of America or something, but it’s actually got him feeling nostalgic for George W. Bush. Who could have seen that coming? Ahem.

Alternate headline via Jim Treacher: “Harry Reid found not guilty on racism charge.”

Obama “respects the right of anybody — Democrat, Republican, independent — to disagree with his opinion on this,” White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters Tuesday.

“Senator Reid is a fiercely independent individual,” Burton said. “It’s one of his strengths as a leader of the Democratic Party. So the president feels completely fine that [they] might disagree.”

Translation: “Democrats, feel free to distance yourselves from the president on this.” Which, actually, was unnecessary, as they’re already abandoning ship in droves. Meanwhile, I’ve been seeing stories all day that New York Gov. David Paterson’s planning to meet with the Park51 chiefs in hopes of getting them to move the site, but as you’ll see from the clip below, that’s news to developer Sharif El-Gamal. Is this simply a question of Paterson wanting to meet with them, or are the meetings already in progress? Hmmmm:

Sources tell CBS 2’s Kramer that Gov. Paterson is concerned that Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a staunch supporter of putting the mosque at ground zero, and President Barack Obama, might be advising mosque leaders to dig in their heels and insist on the present location…

Paterson’s office confirmed that discussions between his staff and the developer’s staff have been ongoing and said the governor expects to have a meeting scheduled in the near future.

That does sound like something Bloomberg would do, but unless The One is some sort of deep-cover GOP agent, I’m guessing he’s not involved in Operation: Let’s Drag This Out As Long As Possible. As for why the developers might insist on staying put even though the much-touted goal of “building dialogue” has long since crashed and burned, you’ll find a clue in the video of El-Gamal. Most righties will say they’re committed to the spot as a “victory mosque,” most lefties will say they’re committed in order to thwart those darned wingnuts and prove a point about religious freedom, but this guy’s thinking about the bottom line. If they move the site now, it’s just another community center; if they keep it where it is, it’s that community center, “the most famous community center in the world.” Any publicity is good publicity, “dialogue” be damned.

I’ll leave you with a smattering of Muslim opinion about the project, as it’s not as uniform as you might have been led to believe. Zuhdi Jasser, whom I’ve cited several times before, continues to insist that it’s a bad idea, as does Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed of al-Arabiya, who fears that “it will be turned into an arena for promoters of hatred, and a symbol of those who committed the crime.” On the flip side, Muslim Republicans like David Ramadan and Randa Fahmy Hudome see it as a free-exercise issue that shouldn’t be demagogued for midterm gain, and longtime blogger Aziz Poonawalla gave a thoughtful interview to fellow blogger Scott Payne reiterating his support for the project and his misgivings about how both opponents and Park51 management have handled the subject. All worth reading. Click the image to watch.

I was thoroughly enjoying Joe Scarborough and ditzy Mika this morning on his morning show. Not only did Nora O’Donnell compare those opposed to the mosque to 9-11 terrorists, but they have decided to make Newt Gingrich the voice-face-and posterboy of the opposition (Joe is there to lead and approve all this because he “knows Newt”) and tomorrow they are brining in an official Newt biographer, for the entire three hours I bet. Joe Scarborough on the mosque: “Newt Newt Newt Grrr Grrr Grrrrrr!”

Great, now my biggest concern about this stupid Mosque thing is how much will it end up costing me?

‘Cause there is about 0% chance that a discussion of moving it will not include tax breaks, and reimbursement from “the state” for the costs already incurred, etc. etc.

Freedom of religion? First amendment? Riigghht.

We also have freedom of speech, but there are all sorts of restrictions, yelling “Fire” in a crowded theatre, using slurs during a crime can get extra hate charges filed, etc.

Though we have a freedom, it is not a 100% unabridged freedom. Ther are limitations.

That being said, the decision to build a church is a religious decision. The decision to build a church at that specific site is a political decision and that is what I object to.

Obama “respects the right of anybody — Democrat, Republican, independent — to disagree with his opinion on this,”

I thought Obama wasn’t going to voice an opinion on this. He just said that America has freedom of Religion. Who could respect someone’s opinion that disagrees with that?

Frankly, I don’t think people are as upset with a Mosque going up there as we are that after 8 years we can’t put up a memorial. We’re paralyzed, without leadership and they’re filling the void.

Bush should have led the rebuilding of the WTC or memorial. It should have been extremely patriotic and more “in your face” than this mosque. Instead, he voted “present” and let the city of NY bicker about this national issue for years. If we had a spectacular memorial up over ground zero, I couldn’t care less if Muslims ringed it in Mosques.

elfman on August 17, 2010 at 7:37 PM

I’m so glad I have permission to think there’s something wrong with letting the religion that killed 3,000 of our citizens (and has committed nearly 16,000 terror attacks worldwide in the past 9 years) have a monument celebrating their bloody ideology.

Thank you Obama. /sarc.

Hold on a sec, here. Is that really what Obama, via his spokesman, is saying? Because the statement by Dingy Harry’s office was “Senator Reid… thinks that the mosque should be built someplace else.” By saying that Obama’s fine that he and Reid might disagree, isn’t he admitting that he, President Obama, wants the mosque to be built near Ground Zero??

Are you so lost AP that you would give us the lame spin that doesn’t address the issues of

a) Why is so d*mn important to have it RIGHT there
b) Where is $100 million dollars coming from if this is just a run-of-the-mill mosque to the investors? Must have a pretty DEEP meaning to attract that kind of cash.
c) Why haven’t they explained how this inflammatory mosque is a bridge builder in THEIR eyes if that is the truth?

Again, why do I care about some Republicans who want to stick this mosque at ground zero to ensure freedom of religion survives in our poor helpless nation of bigots (sarc)? or to prove ourselves “worthy” to the muslim world?

So El Gamal likens this project to a YMCA? Then why doesn’t he simply let Greg Gutfield go ahead with his plans and call the whole center the Y-M-M-A? “Young men…”

El Gamal has a larger plan in insisting on this location. It will have a worldwide draw? For whom? It appears that he is guilty of a classic case of projection in calling objections to the Cordoba project purely political. His own motivations are political. A megastructure such as he proposes is a political statement on behalf of a religion that does not divorce itself from civil law.

Surely in all of NYC there is a nice bit of property that could stand some urban renewal where this symbolic building could be constructed.

Bloomberg has a billion reasons for supporting the mosque. Bloomberg LLC his financial communications co. is creating a regional info center in Dubai, with links to Saudi and the other emirates as well as to Pakistan and Indonesia. He hopes to get involved in the Sharia banking system which is the alternative financial system in the region. If he can monopolize info distribution in and out of the region he and his subscribers can make billions. This was posted yesterday on FR but hasn’t been seen elsewhere. This mosque for Bloomie is about money and that needs to go viral.

Here’s a good rule of thumb for them to use – if they are looking to put it in the place of a building that was damaged by debris from the collapsing towers, they are too close.

Funny how that wasn’t brought up in the interview.

midlander on August 17, 2010 at 8:10 PM

Has anyone (media) bothered to go ask some of the local union guys that will have to build this thing if they’re going to cooperate? This sounds like a good project for you Allahpundit. Don’t you have to be licensed with one of the locals to do construction work in NYC? And if they try to bring in outside workers they’d be tied up in court for ages.

That’s where I think the wheels will come off the bus on this thing. They won’t be able to get anyone to build it.

I’m sure all these liberals who have suddenly found new respect for freedom of religion will quit harassing Christians and anybody who dares utter the word God in a public forum, right? Riiiiight……

Talk about incoherent.

[midlander on August 17, 2010 at 7:58 PM]

Totally.

Two blocks is away is far, Mr. El-Gamal? Two blocks is a great distance in NYC, Mr. El-Gamel?

Take a look, Mr. El Gamel. Your proposed mosque is AT Ground Zero, not two blocks away.

Can’t wait to find a pic of his proposed site in a photo. It exists. It will be found.

Nuttiest of all had to be Norah O’Donnell, comparing those in opposition to the Obamamosque to 9/11 hijackers.

She is soooo desperately trying to be relevant. Perhaps it’s contract time for her.

Obama: we have freedom of religion in this country.

Really? /s

Nice way to twist the argument when you know that is NOT what this is about. There are hundreds of mosques in America and about 100 in New York city already.

Welcome. This one, I think, provides some perspective, but I cannot be positive of the following because I don’t live in NYC.

Anyway, see the tower (with the pinnacle you can slightly make out that it is green) on the left edge of the picture? That I think is the Woolworth Tower. That faces Broadway and takes up the whole corner from Barclay St to PARK PL with Park being in the foreground of the picture. The next block to the right in the picture is the block the proposed mosque would be built on on the near side of Park in this pic.

That billowing cloud of dust and death pouring down West Broadway (center of the pic) is already two blocks past where Park51 wants to build.

Ground Zero is a misnomer. Two blocks away is a deception.

Dusty on August 17, 2010 at 8:53 PM

I think the director of al-Arabiya is right about this: the vast majority of ordinary Muslims don’t want a mosque at Ground Zero. They probably look at the price-tag of this and think “hey, a hundred mil can us buy a real good electric power plant/water sewage system/desalination plant.”

It’s unfair to judge the Muslim community as whole based on the actions of Barack Obama. This pampered wimp of a man is far more radical than any ordinary Muslim.

I believe the only reason a (very) few so-called moderate
Muslims are speaking out is because they realize their stealth jihad is being revealed for the actual jihad it is:

1. The name Cordoba House, representing the Islamic conquest of Spain. [Say, immediately before the Iftar bomb was dropped by O, didn't Michelle visit Cordoba/el Andalus? Interesting 'coincidence'.]
2. Planned opening date: 9/11/11.
3. Chosen site: where landing gear from Atta’s missile
bashed through the roof and ashes of the dead rained down.
4. Refusal to disclose sources of funding.
5. Refusal to consider alternate locations, even with the
purported offer of (free?) city property offered by Paterson? Bloomberg?
6. Rauf’s statements re the U.S. being responsible for the
9/11 attacks 19 days later and his desire to institute Shariah law in America.
7. Rauf sent by our State Dept. as U.S. ‘representative’ to the Muslim world (and on the taxpayer’s dime) at the time of O’s comments.
8. Existence of 100 mosques in NYC and two within close proximity to Ground Zero.
9. Bloomberg’s financial ties to Islam: http://barenakedislam.wordpress.com/2010/08/16/follow-the-money-sharia-finance-is-why-bloomberg-is-in-bed-with-radical-islamists/
10. O’s ties to Islam (should now be chronicled in one place as they are almost too numerous to count). Buzzing Manhattan with AF1 shortly after taking office immediately springs to mind. Insensitive? Oops? Intentional?
11. No mention by O of the Constitutional right to rebuild that Greek Orthodox church, while Cordoba House was apparently fast tracked through the approval process.
12. Not even one board or brick has yet been laid to build the memorial at Ground Zero. Gee, wouldn’t it be great if the mosque was towering overhead before that ever occurred?
13. The hijackers have yet to be tried nine years later, even though they pleaded guilty. Again, what a victory if the mosque was constructed before any trials take place.

Ask those same moderates if they adhere to the teachings of the Koran, you know, like whether they believe in the establishment of a global caliphate.

No wonder O kinda sorta walked it back (but not in actuality) and now thinks it’s fine that ‘independent Reid’ is entitled to his view. Although I like AP’s take on O’s latest remarks, it could also represent an(other) oops, too much has been revealed moment.

Taqiyya talkers are smooootthhhh, schooled in molifying the infidels with soft talk and lies, while in their mosques and native tongues they speak their truths. See Memri.org for all the evidence you’ll need to confirm this fact.

Yep, the time for taqiyya talk is here and now. O and ‘moderate Muslims’? I’m not buying it for even one second.

I am not the one making Jews look like total tools:

Regarding the Islamic Center: “I know how I would feel if people started saying there were certain places you weren’t allowed to put up a synagogue and therefore I know what should not be done to people who want to put up a cultural center which will include a prayer space,” said Rabbi Aurthus Waskow, the director of the Shalom Center in Philadelphia.
