Harry Reid: I wish they’d build the Ground Zero mosque somewhere else
posted at 3:49 pm on August 16, 2010 by Allahpundit
CNN’s headline is “Reid breaks with Obama,” but that’s not quite true. It was clear from the start, even before Saturday morning’s “clarification,” that The One was voting present on the central question of whether the Park51 center should be built where the owners want it built. Reid’s simply gone a little further than O by addressing that point, while of course reiterating that they have the right to build there if they so desire. Which puts him squarely in line with … Sharron Angle.
“The First Amendment protects freedom of religion,” spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement. “Sen. Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else. If the Republicans are being sincere, they would help us pass this long overdue bill to help the first responders whose health and livelihoods have been devastated because of their bravery on 911, rather than continuing to block this much-needed legislation.”
I know national polls show voters (including a majority of Democrats) overwhelmingly against the mosque but I’m still surprised that he went this route. He’ll be absolutely obliterated by the left for it. They’ll turn out for him anyway, I assume, in the interest of electing Anyone But Angle, but he’s going to take an unholy beating in the meantime. Consider this a parting gift to him from Obama, whose agenda has already placed Reid on the brink of electoral destruction: Had Barry O simply stayed away from this subject and continued with the lame but smart talking point about not interfering in local issues, Reid probably could have ducked it. Instead he spoke up and nationalized it, and now Democrats everywhere will have to decide whether to walk the plank or save themselves. Good work, champ.
There’s a report just across from Haaretz as I write this that the Park51 owners are planning to abandon the project and move it elsewhere, but I haven’t seen that anywhere else. Take it with a grain of salt, but do note the mention in the story of a shortage of funds for the building. That was part of David Frum’s reasoning last week vis-a-vis why he thought the center might be a big publicity stunt. If so, it’s a brilliant one, because as Haaretz says, they’ll probably clean up in sympathy donations now if they do end up moving.
Update: An update from Greg Gutfeld on his gay bar: “The new name is Dialog. Yes, I am building Dialog.”
Update: The first progressive uppercut on Reid comes from Greg Sargent: “This just makes the Dems look weak, unorganized, cowardly, and unwilling to take a stand for principles they plainly believe in.”
Update: As suspected, it looks like the Haaretz story is bogus. The Park51 spokesman is tweeting that there’s no truth whatsoever to it.

This is just so brilliantly inspired. In fact, everything he’s come up with since the GZ mosque controversy erupted has been so good it’s almost scary good.
One of these day’s I’m going to have to set my alarm to watch this man’s show.

Also, Western Actor, I have not see you make any rabid, anti-Muslim, generalizing, demonizing comments. If you have made such remarks please cite them.

I wonder if with all this attention on the funding this Imam can raise $100m illion. It sounds like a great idea to the investors who want a victory mosque until now when they see ALL the funding could be traced back to them and that queers the deal for some of them that like their anti-American activites not be attached to them which is in many cases businessmen or politcians the US CAN touch back on.

Of course. Our family built a school, farm mission in northern Africa. We hired staff and served the Muslims. After 50 years, the King siezed the property and revoked visas to visit our family members buried in Africa. Many African Arabs converted to Christianity and moved to America. They had death threats and were cut off from their kindred. We were involved with Muslims before most Americans had ever seen one.

And how come you are afraid to answer my repeated questions in various threads as to whether or not racism exists against Whites?

Why are you accusing everyone of being racist? It’s a very sophomoric debating tactic.

Del Dolemonte,
Are you serious? You think you need to ask me that question? Look if I have made you believe that I am racist against whites, I’m sorry. But you only have yourself to blame, because I have not done or said anything racist against White-Americans.
The fact that you’re asking me that makes me believe that you have so deeply embraced stereotypes about certain people that you’re not being objective.
I have called out many racists of all shades. If you don’t like being called a racist, fine. But don’t assume that it’s your race that is the problem. That is racist against yourself.
Got it.

We should meet. As with other cowards who fail to follow through with their lies, I will subsidize

Two of my children are linguists and have volunteered to mentor and teach English to Somali refugees. One in Salt Lake City and the other in Tucson. One has moved from Tucson to Turkey just recently. The stories those refugees tell about living under sharia law and what happened to them as they desperately tried to get away are harrowing to say the least.
Really, your question was as bigoted as it gets, even for you.

When you post on a controversial topic **** happens. Anti-Muslim rhetoric is germane to this discussion. Also defending myself against being called a bigot is fair.

What do you propose when the topics are this hot?
Clearly, my writing has gone to crap and my detractors are barely literate. So Greenroom posts are out. I’m here and I’m pretty outspoken. Is that bad?

Curiously, what the f**k does that have to do with having an opinion on a mosque built two blocks from the site of the biggest terrorist attack on American soil in history, carried out by Muslims, with a controversial opening date, name, and financial backing?

Bishop on August 16, 2010 at 5:27 PM
To address the topic: I was about to say “wow, I’m surprised at Harry Reid,” and then I read the last bit. Just had to get in a jab at Republicans. Heh. No mosque at or near ground zero. That’s a no-brainer.
As for the debate over bigotry against Muslims — and I think this does pertain to the discussion over the mosque — the honest answer is that there is bigotry that permeates the discussion. You can’t character Muslims the way many people do and still maintain that you aren’t intolerant of them. If you think it’s a violent, whatever-whatever religion, stand by it.
*crosses fingers that this will go through — truth requires censorship apparently*
Narutoboy on August 16, 2010 at 5:27 PM

Wouldn’t be in the best interest for the Muslims to NOT build there?
Given that if it’s built, it will encourage other Muslim supremacists to attack other cities to get them to “Knuckle under” to other demands.
Build it somewhere else so it doesn’t appear to be victory for the Muslim supremacists.

Three Members of congress were present for the President’s remarks last Friday . . . three!
As was reported in the L.A. Times:
I live in Rush Holt’s district, which is in central New Jersey, and I’d sure like him to try to explain his take on all of this!
Now that the President is claiming he is back voting “present” on the matter, perhaps Rush Holt can clear things up for us?
Rush Holt . . . “Let YOU Be Clear !”
Trochilus on August 16, 2010 at 5:36 PM
If the city was offering free land to build somewhere else, it seems like a might big incentive to do so. The owners of the original site would still be able to do something with that piece of property and save money for the mosque too.
Plenty of evidence that there is more to this than just a desire to build a mosque.
Bishop on August 16, 2010 at 5:36 PM
It is shallow, Race. For the record, I don’t think I can actually say I’m personally friends with or even know a Muslim. I know a couple of Hindus and Catholics and a ton of atheists, but the bulk of my religious friends are Baptist.
Does that change my comments any? I fully support freedom of religion, but I also think that this building will harm Muslim/American relations and think it’s unwise for that reason. Or to put it in the paraphrased words of a prominent Muslim: They’re free to open whatever they like. If they won’t consider the sensibilities of Americans, they’re not going to build dialog.
Esthier on August 16, 2010 at 5:42 PM
Yes, and showing weakness – either intentionally or unintentionally will lonely encourage further attacks.
This is the problem when the Left is in charge, they think that being all touchy feeley with people will get them to like you and stop them from wanting to subjugate you.

But in any case, you need some anger management sessions before you get in trouble with the actual law.

No it doesn’t.
The West is the exception in how we approach the world.
The rest of the world has no problem with pushing their own ethnic group, religion, or ideology to the exclusion of others. They see what we do as madness, or cowardice.
sharrukin on August 16, 2010 at 5:47 PM
That’s all the slap in the face I need to tell me, this is not about opening a dialogue with this particular Imam. This is a total in your face maneuver. To see this as a freedom of religion issue is to bury your head to the real truth of what this is truly about.
capejasmine on August 16, 2010 at 5:51 PM
It doesn’t even have to be group specific – it’s just that the world revolves around the aggressive use of force, the quicker people realize that, the better off we will be.
Chip on August 16, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Beck is talking about the mosque right now. This is not about religious freedom. It is about building a victory mosque. Even Harry Reid sees that fact.
kingsjester on August 16, 2010 at 5:54 PM
Apparently there is a site somewhere which pays you based on how many people you label as either racists or bigots in the comments sections of selected blogs.
T.R.C. must be raking in the big bucks!!
Just because a person opposes the rather blatant poke in the eye involved with building a major mosque near the former site of the World Trade Center in NYC doesn’t mean that person is a bigot or racist. Maybe they just believe that giving offense isn’t the best way to win hearts and minds?

The Race Card will be missed. He was one of the great minds of our times. R.I.P.
As president, Obama should’ve condemned this thing. Not just because it’s in bad taste, but because it’s a threat to national security. On one side, you have radical Muslims that will view this thing and be inspired to do more. On the other side, you have radical and unhinged Americans that may decide to do harmful things. It’s good for no one, and this just speaks to Obama’s inability to be president.
