Gallup: Obama hits new low on daily tracking at 42%

posted at 1:36 pm on August 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

More than a few readers noticed the new lows that Barack Obama hit over the weekend in the Gallup daily tracking poll, which otherwise may have gone unnoticed — if it still wasn’t at 42% today.  That comes from a three-day rolling average encompassing Thursday through Saturday, when weekend polling usually means more sympathetic results for Democrats.   Obama’s rating brings his Q3 average to 45%, down from 47.5% in Q2, and his weekly average also hits 45%.

Gallup doesn’t provide any written analysis for either measure, but does provide the breakdown in approval by demographic for the weekly results, and it looks devastating.  Obama maintains a majority approval among 18-29YOs, but they’re not necessarily going to turn out in force anyway.  The senior vote will be the most reliable, and Obama hits a new low of 36% among voters 65 and older.  He doesn’t do much better with 50-64YOs at 42%, up just two points from the low for that demo he hit last week.

Democrats in the East may call on Obama to join them on the campaign trail; Obama gets a 54% approval rating  in that region.  Don’t expect to see him much beyond the Ohio valley, though (and probably not there much, either).  In the Midwest and West, Obama only gets a 44% approval rating, and in the South, a 41% rating.  Democrats hoping to salvage their re-election campaigns in those areas had better start distancing themselves from Obama.

Not that he will make that easy:

President Obama will try to capitalize on a huge win for the White House in Colorado by aggressively hitting the campaign trail this week.

Obama will make stops in three states where Democratic incumbent senators are in tight races. Democrats hold a 59-41 advantage in the Senate, but Republicans are almost certain to pick up a handful of seats in the upper chamber. …

Obama will travel on Monday to California, where Sen. Barbara Boxer (D) is in the fight of her life against Republican Carly Fiorina. The president is scheduled to speak in Los Angeles for a fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

He’ll also stop over Monday in Wisconsin, where Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold’s race is considered a toss-up. Obama will attend an event for the state’s Democratic Party with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who’s running for governor.

Let’s take a moment to relish the definition of momentum here, noted by Analogkid2112 on Twitter, which is a Democrat winning a Democratic primary. That may be all the momentum Obama sees in 2010, so he’d better enjoy it while he can.

A few more points from the Gallup breakdown:

  • Obama is now below 50% in all income groups, with a high of 49% from the lowest income earners.
  • Obama gets a 56% among those with post-graduate college degrees, but falls below 50% among voters of all other levels of education.
  • Only 42% of independents approve of his performance, and among “pure independents,” that drops to 36%.
  • 54% of singles approve of Obama’s performance, while only 37% of married voters do.

As long as Obama campaigns among single post-graduate degree holders, he should do well in the midterms.

Update: As several people are pointing out, Obama hit 50% disapproval today, for the first time, I believe.

But don’t forget that approval ratings of a president are not the same as voter party preferences. While the lefties disapprove of Obama, it is not because he is too left wing for them. When it comes time to vote, they will vote democrat anyway. Michael Moore probably gives Obama an F as president, but wouldn’t dream of not voting Democrat in any election, mid-term or otherwise.

Yes and no. Yes, they wouldn’t dream of voting other than D, however the disillusionment among the ranks of 0bama supporters may keep them from even coming out to vote during the midterms.

That’s why the president’s approval ratings within his own party are important. He can depress the vote within his own party and excite the vote from the opposition.

rob verdi on August 16, 2010 at 1:57 PM

While it may seem to suppress democrat voters, I don’t think it will be a significant factor. The country is becoming more politically polarized and that generates more animosity and anger. Anger drives people to the polls. While they may rate Obama poorly, their hatred for anything to the right of obama will motivate them to vote anyway.

The only demographic whose negative opinion of obama’s job performance should be of interest to the right is the moderate/independents. These are the people who vacillate from Democrat to Republican quite easily. But the poll doesn’t indicate how many of those disgruntled are from this critical demographic.

Well, supposedly it was 38% (and that’s according to Gallup, which I don’t trust) at the beginning of August. Considering Mosquegate … so you may be right. Also considering that approximately 21% of Americans consider themselves to be at least somewhat liberal, that makes sense. So the only groups who still approve of Obama are the Blacks and the Libs, and possibly many of the estimated 5 – 10% of Americans with cognitive disabilities …that sounds about right.

Rush wants the KSM trial to be held at the Mosque to facilitate outreach

faraway on August 16, 2010 at 2:07 PM

Clearly King Hussein Louie hates America and most Americans. If he doesn’t, what would he be doing differently?

You’ve Lost America, Mr. President

I was “one incident too early.” On November 5, 2009, I wrote:

“Barack Obama’s presidency is effectively over. Strong words? Ask yourself this: what other president of the United States would have spent almost three minutes speaking at the Dept. of Interior before getting around to mentioning the fact that twelve soldiers had been killed, and thirty one wounded in a massacre at Fort Hood in Texas?”

Alas, most Americans let this travesty slide down the memory hole. Thankfully, like he has with so many other unpopular positions, Barack Hussein Obama has “doubled down:” his support of the Ground Zero mosque is game, set, match.

As I wrote in my previous column, the true intentions of the mosque builders were revealed when they turned down NY Governor David Patterson’s offer of state land in return for re-locating the mosque away from Ground Zero. They refused. That this “factoid” was seemingly irrelevant to the president speaks volumes.

It is worth remembering this is the same president who belittled ordinary Americans for “clinging” to religion. I guess Muslims “clinging” to a location that infuriates the overwhelming majority of Americans is perfectly fine, even after it’s been revealed for the rankly provocative plan it truly is.

Ordinary Americans? They recognize a self-aggrandizing, holier-than-thou phony when they see one. They aren’t fooled by a president who says that, “Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground”–only seconds before he reveals the total hollowness of that statement by saying he’s fine with a mosque on top of it.

Some one must have told Mr. Obama it wasn’t flying. On Saturday, he issued a “clarifying” statement: he wasn’t commenting on the “wisdom” of putting a mosque in a particular location, but on the “right people have that dates back to our founding.”
Baloney.

Nothing dumber than a post grad idiot, with no common sense…and a desire for a utopia that only a 5 year old can relate to.

Only 42% of independents approve of his performance, and among “pure independents,” that drops to 36%.

So that 6% are closet socialists? Or unprincipled, unless it benefits them personally?

There is no economic recovery even thinkable at the moment, what with the lame-duck session of Congress looming, and the uncertainty of what the Repubicans will have the guts to try, and when they’ll try it. I think we’re approach the point where the Zero is going to abruptly see approval in the low 30′s, especially if he keeps campaigning, where he’s almost certain to say something catastrophically (for him) stupid.

Check out the new Gallup Weekly summary. Ed is one week behind the times.

Here are some new all-time lows:

1) FEMALES: 45%
2) 18-29: 46% (WAS 59% LAST WEEK)
3) EAST: 46%
4) 2000-4999 43%
5) 7500+ 41%
6) LIBS 72% (TIED)
7) SELDOM/NEVER CHURCH 48%
8) MARRIED 37% (TIED)

COMMENT:

1) With Obama this past week at 43% among MALES and 45% among FEMALES, he is deep trouble. In 2008 he was at 49% with all males and 56% with all females.

2) For several weeks now Obama has been at or below 55% with MODERATES. I venture it to say it is because of the state of the economy.

3) And when Obama hits all-time low with atheists, secular humanists and backsliders (seldom/never go to church at 48%) you know he has a major problem.

4) Oh by the way the 18-29 group fell 13% in one week. Hmm.

The president’s mosque stance is just disgusting.

Yeah, I’ll still kill a few hours playing Warcraft. Whoaa, there is a big loss of love for Obama there. A good share of Obama bashing goes on and this is one of his key demographics. Good to see.

I got a few laughs offering to sell Netherweave Bags for people to carry the Social Security money they will NEVER see. Or to carry all of their loot from ‘Recovery Summer.’

We don’t need another Mosque in NYC. We have 30 too many. The people need a Walmart. If Walmart planned a store on this Muslim land, Bloomberg would blow a gasket.

Ain’t that the truth. Rush was talking today about a Christian Orthodox church that was destroyed when the towers fell and are trying to rebuild. NYC and the Port Authority has been putting every obstacle possible in their path for eight years.

My Building Permit

Just thought you might like to know. . .

I recently applied for a permit to build a new house. It was going to be 100 ft tall and 400 ft wide with 9 turrets at various heights and windows all over the place and a loud outside entertainment sound system. It would have parking for 200 cars and I was going to paint it snot green with titty pink trim.

The City Council told me to go to hell.

So I sent in the application again, but this time I called it a Mosque.

Work starts on Monday.

Muslim leaders to abandon plans for Ground Zero community center
By Shlomo Shamir – Haaretz | Published: 4:11 PM 08/16/2010 | Updated: 4:29 PM 08/16/2010
After weeks of heated debate over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero – the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York – it seems Muslim leaders will soon back down, agreeing to move to a new site.

The decision follows a high-profile campaign against the project that included advertisements on New York buses showing images of the burning Twin Towers, an iconic landmark razed when al-Qaida terrorists flew packed passenger planes into them in 2001. The New York Republican party is also said to be planning a hostile television campaign.

Sources in New York said on Monday that Muslim religious and business leaders will announce plans to abandon the project in the next few days.

If Obama’s approval rating amongst Black voters was consistent with his approval rating amongst non-Black Democrats, I’d assume that he’d be below 40%. In fact, if Obama was White, there’s a good chance that his approval rating amongst Black voters would be lower than his approval rating amongst non-Black Democrats, considering how much Blacks are suffering from this recession. The Black community is hurting economically very badly. But they’re trying to keep a stiff upper lip because a Black man is president. Something to keep in mind when considering these polls. Bottom line….if his approval rating amongst White voters hits 35% by October, the midterms are gonna be a bloodbath.

Me likey.

For now on when I hear someone mention the Cordoba House I will respond, “What’s that? Ohhhh. You mean the Obama-mosque”.

Here’s hoping the Obama-mosque works it’s way into our vernacular.
