Video: “I’m willing to take a chance on something different”
posted at 10:12 am on August 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
“In 2008,” Michelle Rena Jones says with a laugh, “we cheered, hollered, partied, celebrated.” The party’s over in 2010, though, and she knows it. Jones says promises haven’t been fulfilled, and now she feels as though she made a mistake — and she’s not the only one. The Wall Street Journal tells a story that George Stephanpoulos notes Democrats “don’t want to hear” in this midterm cycle, a story of hype and disillusion that has voters looking for change in 2010 — real change:
Now, the 40-year-old is rethinking her lifelong support for the party. She has been without steady work for two years, lost her home and car and began receiving cash assistance from the state for the first time. This year, she says, “I’m willing to take a chance on something different.” Another possibility, she says, is that she won’t vote at all.
Ms. Jones is part of an unmeasured, agitated mass: unemployed Americans who don’t believe the Obama Administration and Congress have done enough to produce jobs. With elections coming up, their unease is especially troublesome for the Democrats, who control both chambers.
A poor economy never bodes well for incumbents. Cook Report, the nonpartisan political newsletter that tracks congressional races, estimates that 73 House seats are vulnerable—including Mr. Schauer’s. This group has two things in common. Almost all (66 of 73) are held by Democrats, and most include counties that have unemployment rates exceeding the national average, according to data assembled by The Wall Street Journal.
Incumbent House Democrats in dozens of districts face a daunting task: to explain why they wasted almost a year on ObamaCare while unemployment skyrocketed for their constituents, in most cases above the national average. Jones and many others like her who feel betrayed by Barack Obama and Democrats on economic issues may find it difficult to bother voting for a Democrat again, even if they don’t vote for a Republican — at least now. The GOP has a generational opportunity to show its relevance on economics and limited government to a broad, formerly hostile audience that finally discovered that Obamanomics is nothing more than smoke and mirrors … very expensive smoke and mirrors.

Not mentioned is the fact, that unemployment among blacks is much higher than the 9.5% U3 number and the 16.5% number. The numbers for young blacks just entering the job market are truly appalling.
A competent GOP would be using this fact to push a wedge into the cracks of disillusionment, and fracture off democrat party support.
But where to get a competent GOP?

This.
I don’t know Mizz Jones, but unless she is far different than the rest of the Dems, I put no faith in her disenchantment with Osama Obama.
If she’s anything like the rest of the gimme-that-pie-in-the-sky Democrat crowd, the Traitor-in-Chief can win her back with goodies from his stash. Doesn’t matter if it’s cash assistance, a gubmint job or some other piece of unicorn dung.
Those who see some good coming from the lib-left disenchantment with the Chicago Jesus need to stop drinking so early in the day. The moonbats are unhappy because he hasn’t stolen enough from the productive people and passed it along to them.

Honey, the only thing government needs to do to produce jobs is get out of the way. Stop voting for people who want the government to get in the way.

You guys are high. The dems may lose their grip, but only to a more open and radicalized marxist party that will arise. The GOP will never sniff more than 5% of the black vote until the race card is no longer playable.

Which is essentially casting a vote for the Republican candidate. Same as those conservatives who sat out the last election in effect voted for Obama.

I feel bad for the lady who has been looking for a job and who has been doing the daily slog so that she can still support her son. I don’t like the fact that she is “in her heart” a Democrat and would choose not to vote rather than make an analytical change, for even ONE election cycle, even to send a message to her beloved Democrats.
.
She just refuses to face reality, even after decades of welfare state entitlements that are now too expensive to continue. She’s free to make this decision but she’s not free to subject the rest of us to it if we don’t want it.

The problem I see right now is that the GOP better come up with some solid and concrete ideas to put forward in regards to creating jobs and bringing financial stability to our country. And we better have one outstanding candidate to bring forward for 2012, too, because personally, I don’t think we have one ready to take on the task right now, given the enormity of the problems we face. Think how bad things will be messed up by 2012…you think Obama inherited a mess? Pity the poor next president.

Of course, even if the GOP takes the House and comes close in the Senate, and actually advances a low-cost, pro-growth agenda (not a certainty), President Present can always just veto it and then claim that the continued malaise is all the fault of obstructionist Republicans who refuse to pass his brilliant Five Year Plan.

I hear people commenting about taking handouts but it says Ms. Jones had to get “assistance from the state for the first time”. The majority of people try everything in their power to avoid having to get help from the government.
scalleywag on August 13, 2010 at 11:28 AM
Based on my Jewish liberal friends, I agree. Republicans are still monsters to them. They see the Democrat governance model as correct, and these Dems are not doing enough of that. The Lightworker couldn’t pull his economic miracle out of his hat, so they are going to sulk. Well, if it makes them stay home in November, fine.

Mitch Daniels. And don’t worry about his lack of charisma. By 2012 people will be so tired of empty charisma, they’ll feel like they ate nothing but cotton candy on an empty stomach for 3 years, and they’ll want some real food. Someone quiet and unassuming and with a real track record will look very good to the electorate. In fact, Daniels could run on “See what charisma got you?”
YehuditTX on August 13, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Republicans will win in November, then it will be up to Republicans to prove themselves. If this happens, the sky is the limit.. We all know what Democrats look like now. The real question will be what do Republicans look like.
Keemo on August 13, 2010 at 11:35 AM
I have many black friends and most went over the top for Obama. I could not get close to making a dent in their enthusiasm and support for him. Almost all are practicing Christians and even pointing out that he was pro abortion, which was originally intended to get rid of “undesirable minorities” they were supportive. Many black peoe chose skin color over Christ. I think they are coming to grips with that wrong decision. The job sector which has been the best in hiring minorities is the hoverment sector. With their tanking of the economy, there is now a huge dislike of government workers and especially of the Unions that represent them… So this middle class group is in re danger of losing jobs and gains they’ve made because the Democrats whom they elected instituted policies that are making it extra
Ely difficult for the private sector to continue to fund the government sector.
CCRWM on August 13, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Mark Schauer needs to be retired, NOW! His claims that the only reason that we’re going through this recession is because of NAFTA and our China policy is a joke. He wants to start a trade war. None of that will help our country. He is bought and paid for by the unions. I live in Jackson, which is the heart of Michigan’s 7th district. I feel bad for people in Albion (only about 25 minutes west of Jackson), but it’s just as bad here. We want real change in November and I think Tim Walberg for provide it for us.

Although I believe Republicans will have a good showing in November, perhaps even take back both houses, a huge problem still exists. The 2012 election is just over the hill and I see just a handful of Republicans who are strong enough to make it over the top.
I hear no soaring messages from “can do” Republicans, I hear no stirring offering from conservatives to blacks or Hispanics to “come on over” to our side, we have a better plan.
I see no great conservative leaders with great conservative ideas to lead us to the promised land. Sure, Republicans will have a good showing in November, but I see and hear no real solutions being offered to help the US out of the morass.
Real solutions to real problems takes real work (not to mention guts, brains and integrity), and I can see few Republicans or anyone else “fit for duty”.

There’s also another element to the higher unemployment numbers for blacks and it’s called ILLEGALS. Here in Georgia, the illegals have taken over jobs that were typically worked by blacks and teens.
Unfortunately, both parties are hush on this one.

Harry Schell on August 13, 2010 at 12:03 PM
It really was sad to watch that. It gives a greater perspective on just how bad things really are. We focus on how it is affecting our lives in our little worlds that we forget that we are not alone. That is why we all have to stand up and make our voices heard. My hope for her is that she does go out and vote. That she listenes to the people who are running in her district and research them to make an educated and informed decision.

It seems that some people are starting to realize what conservatives already know and that is, that one is prosperous when one has a job, not when one is dependent on the government.
This woman had a job and with her income she had purchased a home and a car. Now, she has no job and those things are gone.
Republicans need to pound home the fact that the policies of Obama and the Dems are hindering job growth, not helping it.

I never could figure why so many Blacks were Democrat. Lincoln was a Republican. George Wallace was a Democrat. Must be Public School Education at work. Welfare, inactivity, and boredom all breed resentment. Even a cursory look at the Democratic Party attitude toward minorities shows a paternalism, and patronizing attitude that should infuriate any self respecting man or woman.

Exactly the way you insist – voting for crap GOP candidates just so the other side won’t win -nd now the halls of government are loaded with GOP unprincipled sellout passive bloat. Honestly, if a Republican Congress simply stops growing the debt and growing the tax and regulatory state, the economy WILL start growing again. And we should all be in favor of that, even if it helps Obama politically. I need a job and I have a kid ready to go to college next year. I care more about that than about adding a couple of points to Obama’s crappy approval rating.
rockmom on August 13, 2010 at 1:00 PM
Blacks have had the same complaints for 50 years and the Democrats have done nothing for them but drive them to the polling stations. That’s why Hispanics won’t be jumping on the wagon to end up the same way.

I’m pretty close to it. I reopened my prevous unemployment claim after they passed the extension of benefits, as much as I hate to take it since it isn’t paid for. It’s either that or start cashing in my already meager retirement savings or my kids’ college fund.
rockmom on August 13, 2010 at 1:02 PM

I hate to be pessimistic, but I’m afraid you’re right.
The African American community & all other blacks here in the US, from my personal observations & interactions all over the country with them, have proven to me that they are 90+% in favor of their own skin color above EVERYTHING else & that includes God.
Many I’ve seen do not like the ‘half ‘breed’ mulatto types & won’t even claim them bcs of the ‘white’ in them (evidently these groups of people are more predisposed to some kind of ‘evil’ against the general black person).
The Indians on the reservation south of me all act this way, too.
African & Native Americans are 2 groups of people who wallow in self pity & irresponsibility & overwhelmingly vote Democrat bcs of the promises of free stuff.
It’s a bad character trait they have & only they can stop each other from thinking & acting this way.
As far as I’m concerned, the Democrat party is nothing but a ‘slave’ trader to these people & they can’t see it.
They are slaves to the DNC. And as long as they think the government is there to ‘create’ jobs & wealth, they will always vote Dem.

Cindy Munford on August 13, 2010 at 2:48 PM
You know, the dems have been quarterbacking inner city minority politics and policy for decades, and in my view all they have done is created a culture of dependency. You would think some of the leaders in those communities would recognize this and want to change course in a big way.
Now it is beginning to touch small town America, and small town America seems to be more awake on wanting something different. Empowerment is much more productive than dependency, so lets hope the inner city minority centers will finally wake up and see what has really been accomplished with the current policies.
saiga on August 13, 2010 at 2:57 PM
But the GOP doesn’t care what color you are. They’ll never win votes from minority voters with a message of individual responsibility. They need to make foolish promises that can’t be kept, and lie about their opponents. That’s worked for Democrats for 50 years.
hawksruleva on August 13, 2010 at 2:58 PM
Housing has a pretty powerful downward drag on employment for that very reason. Homeowners are less likely to pull up roots and move to a new region.
hawksruleva on August 13, 2010 at 3:00 PM
I shouldn’t complain. I am so much luckier then the average unemployed person today. We are not in a financial bind.
Cindy Munford on August 13, 2010 at 3:12 PM
Yup.
If minorities took a look back at what their neighborhoods were like when big government was just starting to run amok, they’d see cleaner, safer areas with more families, less interstates carving up their yards, and more opportunities for the people who lived there.
The combination of the nanny state and the lawsuit culture have made very high barriers for people wanting to start new businesses in crime-ridden inner cities. And union rules mean some teachers, firefighters, and cops are less inclined to go the extra mile to help those areas.
hawksruleva on August 13, 2010 at 3:19 PM
I’m not disagreeing with you but ask yourself if we’d be better off now if Obama had lost to McCain. Hypothetical, I know but the answer seems clear to me. Sit out if you want but don’t complain when you reap the benefit.

I went to school early in my PJ’s & ironed my clothes & curled my hair in my room.
It got old. And I sure do appreciate electricity.
But I am prepared to do it again if needs be.
And BTW- visiting here is a good idea. I live in SW ND.
I think it’s nicer in W. ND than the East river country, IMHO.

When I visit my grandma in S. IN (N of Louisville KY a bit), everywhere I have gone through on the way over the years-MN,IA,MO,IL, is like that.
Our local college in ND is getting like this. They’re bringing over all the Asian students & they can’t speak a lick of English many of them.
I would never dream of going somewhere & staying if I could converse with the people there. Not unless I know I’d be in an English-speaking area.

Don’t you hate when you hit the light switch even though you know there is no power? Two weeks is too long for that adventure and it will probably stick with you. We had a really bad drought in 1998 with lots of fires, I love the rain now, no matter how inopportune.

We do get some spiders & box elder bugs. But that’s it. And good for me bcs I HATE bugs.
And I fit right into the Seattle area bcs I’m a real white girl & can’t tan. :)

I wouldn’t sell this so short. Voting for Democrats has — for whatever reason — become a matter of identity for most African Americans. Everything in them really wants to believe that the people who keep promising them the moon are really trying to deliver it. That’s why it’s so hard for African Americans to cast a properly cynical eye on Democrat politicians. It feels like they’re denying a part of what they are.
But here we go with the Democrats in supreme power in the presidency and Congress, and an African American in-a-Kenyan-Indonesian-Muslim-sort-of-way in the White House, and the promises are all coming up very short.
I’m sure a lot of them will buckle down and try harder, but an awful lot of them will get disillusioned with the demagogues and either not vote at all or even maybe consider voting for a Republican.
I’m no fan of identity politics, but it’s entirely possible that conservative African American candidates with real substance, like Col. West, just might be enough to pull votes no one ever expected. And if all it does is help break the hammerlock the Democrat party has had on minority votes for so long, it would be a great thing for this country.
African Americans made real gains in prosperity and success before the Great Depression, and during the Reagan economy. Those policies did more for poor minorities than the Great Society and the War on Poverty ever accomplished.

Michelle, you should move out of Michigan. Your chances at improving your situation will likely improve dramatically.

Good news – Blacks (not AA, blacks) are only 13% of the population.
Even better – Slip over to American Thinker and search back for some Lloyd Marcus. You’ll like him. Or stay here for some Anita Moncrief.
And more – there are more black conservatives out there than ever. And they’re easy to find. They are successful and proud of America.
Yeah there a lot of black failures. There are a lot of white failures, too. Teh Won dumps on everybody but it hits po’ folk first. Somehow, I will have totally dry eyes over Rangel and Waters and some others in BDC or Bcc or whatever.
Just sayn’ but there’s a world beyond TV and other propaganda media.
Shout out to Cindy: you’re showing the way. I know the background but non carborendum illigitmus Remember you’re here cause some other folks preservered (hung in there or kept at the task; sorry spell check failure on both sides of the keyboard.)

Ed, I was in DC today and saw a car with three bumber stickers. One of them was for SEN Jim Webb D-VA, and the other two were spray painted over with black paint. The first one “Barack Obama” and the second…..said “DEMOCRAT” in big red letters. I took a photo of it and I’ll send it to you maybe tomorrow.

You would not like Florida. Honey we have got some bugs. We have another thing in common. I tell people that dark white is the sum total of my ability to tan.

As a son of the South growing up in 50′s, I have long contended that Southern blacks were doing quite well before D’rats started “Freedom” this that and the other.
Jim Crow was dying!!
Because blacks were doing well and spending. And merchants, white and black, wanted their trade.
Just why do you think “protesters” had to go from DC all the way to Alabama, stopping at every bus station restaurant on the way, before they were refused service.
Oh yes, the Idiots in Hoods were dying, too. Vets who had faced actual bullets were no longer afraid of mouthy fools.
And the same HOPEy, Changey was in the air then, too.

I haven’t experience FL, but I have experienced E. TX, LA, & AL. Never again!
I burn in something like 15 minutes.
It’s pathetic.

I think it’s time for Michelle Rena Jones to give the Republican Party a chance to disillusion her.

What 40 or so years of Democrat style giveaways? What do we show for it? Truly saddening.
