Bombshell: Fiorina 47, Boxer 42

posted at 4:12 pm on August 12, 2010 by Allahpundit

Probably the single most exciting poll of the season thus far. Not only does it suggest that one of the most loathsome Democrats in Congress is really, truly vulnerable, but if even California’s in play then retaking the Senate might be doable after all.

Midterm fee-vah — catch it!

California Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina has increased her lead over Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer to five percentage points according to a new CBS 5 KPIX-TV poll released Thursday, which also shows gubernatorial candidates Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman in a dead heat…

The poll results indicated Fiorina’s support was essentially unchanged among men and women, young and old, white and Hispanic while Boxer had lost small ground among men, younger voters, and independents.

The poll also showed Fiorina tripling her lead in the Central Valley, from seven points one month ago to 21 points in this latest poll.

According to the crosstabs, Fiorina wins 27 percent of the black vote, trails among Hispanics by just six points, and crushes Boxer among indies by 17. There’s no GOP slant in the sample either; it splits 44D, 34R, and 23I. Now here’s where I give you the obligatory eeyore caution: Survey USA’s a respected pollster but they’re the only ones to show Fiorina with a lead this year. Their last poll had her up two points and a Pajamas Media poll taken in June had the race even, but literally everyone else — including Rasmussen — has Boxer ahead by anywhere from five to nine points. So consider these new numbers not so much an answer as a question: Just an outlier, or a leading indicator of a trend in the race? Rasmussen’s last poll did show Fiorina closing in, but only ever so slightly (a two-point gain). Keep this on your radar screen, then, with an eye to confirmation via the next round of polls. Just a little tremor happening in California, or is this the Big One?

Meanwhile, WaPo just moved two more Senate races from “lean Democratic” into the “toss-up” column. Hmmmmm. Exit question: Could the bump for Carly be part of a backlash to the Proposition 8 ruling? She denounced it after it was handed down, but per Survey USA’s analysis, it looks like she hasn’t gained any support so much as Boxer has bled some. And given that part of the bleeding is coming from gay-friendly young voters, I’m thinking … no, probably not the Prop 8 decision. But stay tuned.

Pffft. This is all Rasmussen lies. No Hispanic will ever vote GOP. Harry told me so. And Time magazine had a cover story about how Republicans have scared off blacks and independents for generations to come.

Therefore this poll is s sham.

That would be great to see Fiorina defeat Tootsie(sorry, but Boxer looks like Dustin Hoffman in drag). Although I’m still debating who I want to see as Governor of that state. California is about to implode from all their debt and I’d rather they not have 2 consecutive GOP governors when that happens.

Allah,

Please don’t fall into the MSM world of absolutes. One can be for gay marriage AND against this. I can see more than a few young “gay friendly” voters being OK with gay marriage but opposed to the ruling itself because the judge used a bogus set of criteria for it. Some people have this amazing ability to think about two issues simultaneously.

You know, if the situation with the CA debt improves (more likely to happen than a CA default, BTW), a Gov. Whitman can take all credit thrown her way for that improving situation.

Quit looking at politics as a way to avoid responsibility. It makes conservatives look bad.

Anyone hear Rush talking about how Rangel and Boxer are identical, other than their hair and clothes? I was figuring the Left would try and call him a racist for that. But he was right. Long-term corrupt member liberal member of Congress.

And the “gay friendly young voters” just got all they wanted out of Judge Walker, thus taking the issue off the ballot for all intents and purposes.

Boxer like Reid and Peloser has to go. Boxer is so intellectually banrupt that a RINO like Fiorina is a step in the right direction. Not much of a step, but at least the liberal insanity that Boxer represents with her every word will become ancient history.

I’m all for the GOP taking responsibility and turning this country around. But California is a mess. And it’s not like Meg Whitman would have dictatorial powers. She’d still likely be dealing with a heavily Democratic legislature. Granted, Chris Christie is in a similar predicament in New Jersey, but he’s also got the kind of stones we rarely see in a conservative politician(especially in a blue state).

So consider these new numbers not so much an answer as a question: Just an outlier, or a leading indicator of a trend in the race? Rasmussen’s last poll did show Fiorina closing in, but only ever so slightly (a two-point gain).

At this point, it is still an outlier, though it does confirm a tightening trend, which is not exactly Boxer’s friend.

Doughboy on August 12, 2010 at 4:27 PM

All Whitman would have to do is one 30 second spot several weeks following her victory that pointed two fingers – one at the unions and one at illegal immigration – then ask for help overcoming oppostion from the left in Sacramento – and I think we might just tip over Guam coming to her aid and defense.

It all depends upon whether she’s already been bought – or if she’s got the stones to be a Christie.

Given the place in history she’d maintain were she to step up, why would any rational person decide to do otherwise I wonder.

I have a male employee who has been in a committed heterosexual relationship for several years – but for various reasons is unable to move forward with marriage. He applied for domestic partnership status to benefit his two children from a previous marriage and was told, by the state, that that option is available only to homosexuals.

Since this caveat is presumably to make up for homosexuals inability to get married, I wonder if it will be repealed for gays – or granted for straights.

I am in the Computer / IT industry and I worked for one of the larger HP disty’s .
Trust me when I tell you Carly is great at pandering , waffling , saying whatever it takes.
Carly was ran out of HP and the stock pride exploded in mere weeks , she was an idiot at HP and burned many bridges by saying and promising one thing in public then doing a 180 when the time came to take action
She is pandering and lying . I hope she gets elected
Do you really thin Carly supports CCW? where are the photos of her at the range ? SUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE she supports the 2nd amendment , but that doesn’t mean she thinks INDIVIDUALS can actually own a gun MUCH LESS have a CCW and carry it in public .
Carly is against illegal immigration , yet she endorses all the ” let em come to work here with a permit , which is code for ” yeah we can’t send them home ”
Carly supports the death penalty !! REALLY no one has been executed in California since before Senator Byrd went to D.C
EASY to say things like this when you know there is no chance of it happening in California .
Then again I live in Alabama where you can buy ammo at the gas station , and guns are sold in the newspaper , and CCW permits take 5 minutes and 20 bucks , no training no classes . Of course no one can remember when a NON MINORITY shot a person here .
Carly is RINO at best .

“Carly has been endorsed by the National Right to Life, the California Pro-Life Council, and the Susan B. Anthony List. She is pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, pro-military, and pro-strict border security and against amnesty. She is against Obamacare and will vote to repeal it and prevent the government takeover of private companies and industries. Carly is also a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Like me, she is a member of the NRA, has a 100% NRA rating, and she and her husband are gun owners. She is pro-energy development and believes as I do in an all-of-the-above approach to energy independence. She is against cap and tax. And most importantly, Carly is the only conservative in the race who can beat Barbara Boxer. That’s no RINO. That’s a winner.”

It won’t matter, the Federal courts have thrown down the gauntlet and will “rule” regardless of who is “elected” (what a quaint word) to Congress or any other position. Afterall, they claim they have the power to make the Constitution say anything they want it to say, and therefore, the power to rule them all.

It may be somewhat close in the polls now but the enthusiasm of repubs and conservatives will drown Boxer and Brown in the general election.

I see schadenfreude in someone’s future. Hopefully it will be mine when Babs bites the big one.

I’ll vote for Carly, but I won’t be delirious with joy in the doing. She’s better than Babs, but I’d rather have had Chuck DeVore.

Yeah, because the GOP doesn’t have nearly enough corrupt career politicians.

DeVore, a corrupt politician came in THIRD out of THREE and wouldn’t have been able to beat Boxer. Carly is going to do it.

The Democrats have been acting like Charlie Manson since Al Gore failed to steal the 2000 election.
NoDonkey on August 12, 2010 at 5:07 PM

I have often thought that the decision by Al Gore, after he had already conceded the race, to demand a recount will end up being regarded as one of the most destructive and corrosive decisions ever made by a politician in this country.

This is probably an outlier, but polls are trending well for Fiorina in general, so… keep up the support.
